so i was watching this guy play the beta and when he was adjusting his shaders it said:

"your shader values are not all the same..." (or something like that) "...extra configuration is needed so your next few games may run slower".

so after couple games will the performance get significantly better?
I just got the same notification like a few seconds ago haha.

shaders really make the graphics though eh?

might as well tough it out and see how much better it gets.

i wonder if one can just leave starcraft running if the framerate is unplayable and hope it corrects itself into a playable state.

How does the ladder/leagues work? I finished my 10 games and it put me in plat div 21 or some shit, what does this mean? ;/

You play 10 placement matches. That determines your league (Copper, Bronze, Silver, Gold, Platinum). Once you are in a league, you are put into a division within that league (ie. Silver 31, Silver 34, etc.). A division is just up to 100 people in the same league as you for you to compare your leaderboard ranking. The idea is that if you're in a 100 person division, you'll feel more motivated to try to get to the top than if you're in a 1,000,000 person league leaderboard and won't care about moving up.

Once you're in a League, you can move up/down by winning/losing too much against people in the same League as yourself. For example, you goofed off in Placement and lose every single game, ending up in Copper, but you're way too good and bash all the noobs there, so the system will notice that and bump you up to Bronze. The question is how long it takes for the system to realize you're not in the correct League and move you.

So I played some 2v2 with Haz/Panda/forgot other guy (sorry) and it was pretty cool. Since those were not ladder games, they didn't affect any of our stats.

It seems like GAF has mostly pretty good players, Silver and above. I haven't seen any Bronze/Copper yet.

Add me on to the list of people who hate playing Starcraft multiplayer.

I haven't won a single match out of 8 so far. I am so fucking mad/disappointed. I should've sold my key like everyone else. :(

Starcraft is too much for me, at least in the FPS world I will kill everyone, but it's just too much.

And I think I'll be in the low copper, that is if I even open the game again... otherwise I'm strictly playing with the CPU.

This is plain horrible.

Why not just lose 10 placement matches and get put in the Copper league where only bad players hang out? The point of the placement leagues is to determine your skill.

Because losing constantly sucks no matter the context for me?

You don't get better by giving up. I'm sure the first time you played an FPS you weren't top of the leaderboard. Want to get some coaching help? We can play a 1v1, I'll watch the replay and we can talk about areas you can improve the quickest and easiest. I can't do it right now, but in about 3 hours I can (midnight EST) or maybe tomorrow betwen 11am-6pm EST.

We all used to be awful at Starcraft, and it always took a bit of coaching from someone better to start improving.

Actually when I started playing FPS' I actually picked it up quite quickly and started to top very fast. Except Quake...

I guess the reason I'm upset is because I'm used to getting good at a game relatively quickly and Starcraft and RTS' in general are the bane of my existence.

Let me help you. I used to feel the same way you do about Starcraft with Counterstrike. It took a lot of playing with friends giving me tips and mimicking their play before I could get off the bottom of the scoreboard.

MrMister, those of us without codes would appreciate if you kept such statements as "I will waste my beta key that so many people wanted because I lose all the time" to yourself! I would have been happy to take it off your hands :(

I suggest you keep at it and improve so that you can one day pwn n00bs in a new environment.

FPS's are by nature relatively simple to learn but difficult to master (unless your talking about games like Natural Selection or something).

In order to succeed at Starcraft, you really have to learn how the units work so you can use them effectively and learn how to defend against them. That's the primary reason why every self-respected Starcraft player starts off with the campaign, which introduces one new unit each mission during each race's campaign so you slowly learn how to use each unit effectively in various situations. That's why new players really shouldn't play the SC2 beta, as they'll spend more time trying to even GET to the higher team than they will actually getting the chance to get to know them.

thx, few questions:

-what does the division number mean? completely random?
-Why is the top 8 split from the rest
-There is 23 people in my division, and I am ranked 20. If I fall to the bottom do I get demoted?
-Gold > Plat ?

Plat is highest.

Division number is arbitrary, just there for the sake of separating people into more manageable groupings.

Top 8 in each division get to have their own tournament or something at the end of the season.

Not sure what the exact promotion/demotion criteria are.

Does it not tell you your ladder losses? JUst wins and winning streaks? Lol..
Click your ladder button and it'll show you total wins / losses for everyone in your division.

ggs to all. Seems like the only thing I can do is timing attack MM+M right now. At least it wins :lol

nilbog grats on plat. Come launch the 'Pro' league will be 1 above that.

So for all 10 of my placement matches, I intentionally lost by sending my command center right next to the enemy base and then sending my SCV's on a suicide mission. I lost within 7 minutes a match.

Pretty hilarious too, considering everyone I did that too went "WTF are you doing?" and I just laughed!

Strangely some people ragequit and I got the win. I'm actually enjoying this more just trolling people. :lol
(Although I did learn a cool Terran tactic with it.)

You seem better than bronze.

In the 2v2 vs Exodus your opening was better than his by a good 30 seconds early game.
I was actually in copper until recently. :lol its alot harder to gain rank then it is to just do well in placement.

I am down to 2v2 but don't expect much :(. In fact, i'd love to learn the ropes with a fellow toss player because I seem to be lagging behind mostly.

:lol That's hilarious. They might of thought you were PF rushing them or something and wanted to be spared the embarrassment.

Don't be discouraged. I've always sucked at starcraft until I started watching progamers.

Even then after 2 years I had never played a game on BGH, or zero clutter or anything. Or any other RTS.

Just by watching I understood most of the mechanics, watched some SC 2 stuff, understood counters, apply knowledge.

Went 7-0 then 0-3 in my placement to get silver.
Just spend money, hotkey your stuff, expand.

Really what is hard it remembering to do things, not actually doing them.

Sup.

I actually almost made it out of copper, I think I am placed 8th in there right now, was 1st. I lost 9/10 of my placement matches because I jumped right in and the change in hotkeys really messed me up.

GG's tonight btw.

I almost feel bad because I know I'll either be BEYOND horrible at the beta, not have time to play it, or get bored/depressed at being bad and quit.

But...some random guy who normally snipes me in TF2 on Java's server randomly gave me a spare SC2 beta key right as I was quitting playing for the night. Downloading. :)

Don't worry, the true glory of SC2 will shine through once they release the editor and you start getting to play custom maps, make some friends, etc. Either don't play to win, get better, or just wait for the best part of the game to be released. :)

Yeah I think FPS games are the easiest games out there. I very rarely play them, but every time I do (last time was Bad Company 2), I really felt that I was the first in most servers all the time.

But Starcraft... that's a man's sport ;_;

abak.pachinko here

I just started an hour or so ago, messed around with the AI a bit, jumped into a match and was promptly stomp fucked .

Yeah, I was terrible at the first starcraft as well but I want to learn to get better here, might have some good matches with a friend.

Should probably get the hang of hotkeying buildings and learning to always be doing something
, I mean shit, the enemy protoss I played against was attacking me with a mothership and my entire army consisted of 10 marines, 2 valkyries , a ghost and about 20 scvs.

Seems expanding your base is something that should be done asap.

Me and DeltronZero are on a tear :)

We went like 5-0 or 6-0 tonight.

We won half our games in 7 mins haha

We would easily be 10-0 in placement if we didn't fuck around the first time. :(

So are you in Copper League yet? Are you able to win there?
Stopped playing after I was placed, I'm like 53rd in Division 83 in the Copper League with 1-9.

Apparently I won one match from a guy ragequitting, like I said earlier, from my shenanigans. :lol

Uhhh, isn't it illegal to sell the beta keys? I dunno if you want to post about that in here. The email I got specifically said you are not allowed to sell that shit haha.

GGs all for the game's tonight. Especially that epic 3-person FFA with Panda and Terp.

Lesson learned! BE ABSOLUTELY SURE YOU KILL YOUR OPPONENT.

Went 2-1 in my placement matches afterwards, but one of the guys who I won against seriously needed more time in the practice league. Seriously, he built only one refinery the entire game and had several thousand minerals. Vespene blocked the whole time. I actually felt kinda bad for him when I warped in like 10 DTs lol.

And thanks again for the key aznpxdd!

So I played 10 games today and lost about every one of them. Each game involved a rush of some kind. In my first two games, my terran ally SCV rushed. First time I was like "wtf retard" and didn't help him, and we lost. Second time I got stuck with the same dude and decided to help him and we wound up winning. Next games involved getting photon cannon rushed and constantly ling rushed; I ran into only a handful of terran players, and multiple zerg/zerg teams.

Finally I asked what was up and heard Blizz got rid of turtling? I've been so focused on march madness/school I haven't payed much attention to things. This was the first time in ages that I've had absolutely no fun while playing the beta. It won't be hard to just go 6pool or whatever, but I'm not happy about it.

LTTP; Just got into the beta and I'm focused on Terran atm.

Only thing I don't like right now is how defense is almost useless. A lot of games for me come down to eye for an eye (thank god for lift-off) but maybe that's because I've been trying out mech-air over bio-med.
