State of Decay Year One Survival Edition |OT| More P's, Less D's

Only played the 360 version for a few hours. I knew I was getting this version so I didn't want to dump too much time into the 360. Do I get anything special for importing my 360 save? Or should I just start from scratch?

I like the sound of that. My best friend that's linked to my xbox is getting the discount from having it on 360. I may have to see what it's about.

I powered through the jankyness of the 360, like a lot of dudes here (god bless them) and found a genuinely Awesome game.

You just have to go into accepting that's a shoe string budget indie game. but a damn good one.

I have the original on PC, only put a few hours into it. I may have even bought some DLC on sale, so double dipping isn't something I intend to do. Although, if I did, it seems kind of lame to have a limited window on the discount for people who already own the game.

20% installed on the XB1. Looking at the video from AngryCentaur does this suffer from black crush? Some clips at night looked terrible plus some in the day with shadows.

I've noticed that too, some night scenes are horrendously dark.

It looks great though, and runs better than the 360 version from memory, still janky as hell, and has some horrible frame dips, but that's state of decay haha.

Its had two patches, one last Tuesday and one on Friday that were the same size as the game. Not sure what they did though

Isn`t the game around 5 GB? Someone on Twitter told me that the game had a almost 4 GB patch. That`s just crazy? Next gen patches replaces the entire game.

But it's not, though, especially not anymore.

They've signed a multi-year contract with Microsoft. There's no reason for this port to be this bad, and it's a bummer that this is not the definitive version it should be.

Edit: I regret this post, since I don't quite think the OT is the place to have this discussion. Nevertheless, I took issue with just brushing away that we should accept that this has a shoestring budget. I'll leave the original post in for clarity :)

Thinking about picking this up, but is it just one big sandbox or is there mission structure and an ending? I guess is there a story mode?

Naw, you likely just got a random moment that caused their death. Friendly AI can be terribad at times.
No no, it was me playing lol. I got ripped in half (literally...) by one of the steroid zombies. I don't remember the combat being as hard in the 360 version, but I haven't played it in a long time so it could be that.

It's a big sandbox with story missions you can do whenever. Think Skyrim but with base building/community managing.

Ah I see.

I remember some of the zeds being tougher than others, of the same type. I wouldn't know for certain but those elements could be random as well?

100% worth it for the experience. Fantastic game. It's janky and you'll experience some weird and inexplicable (and sometimes frustrating) shiz, but it's very much worth the price of admission to me.

Just wanted to say great job with the review. Was perfect and thanks for keeping it spoiler free!

Subbed :)

Do you stream on Twitch?

Very rarely. I usually stick to reviews and community discussions, podcasts, so forth.
And thank you very much for the kind words.

did they fix the hilariously anti-climatic ending

And the wooden charisma of at least the main characters (becuase the majority will be randoms)?

Or the game forcing your characters deaths instead of fredoom of saving them or not depending of how you do things?

It was fun, but not that good as the hype said IMO, and its a pitty becuase being a single player game is a little bit shitty on that aspect. And dont get me wrong, I wanted a single player zombie survival game that played like the typical mutiplayer survival games, and thats why I bought it, but being a single player game means creating some better characters and story so I can care and try and save them or not and leave them to die and make the experience that much better.

...what are you even talking about?

...what are you even talking about?

That for me is not that good because the main characters are walking wooden planks with no charisma and I thought I was going to find better portrayals in a sinlgeplayer game?

None of the playable characters in the story mode have a forced death?

The priest and the sherif (although I think the sherif could be safe in some shitty stupid way IIRC, but the priest definetly).

The sheriff is a complete and utter tool anyway. I was looking to kill him well before it happened.

Every two seconds you just get "Allan is angry." "Allan is scared." "Allan is cold." "Allan had painful flatulence."

Seriously, I had one morale mission where he was scared which I completed, switched characters, walked out of the door, and instantly had another morale mission pop up where he was angry.

Piss off, Allan.

Those two always die, but they're treated like normal characters in the extra Breakdown mode as heroes.

You're not wrong about the characters being flat though. I'm a big fan of the game (probably plugged 60-70 hours into the original), but none of the starting trio really shine. I really can't blame Undead Labs for that between the limited scope of the game and the fact that any one of them can die.

Damn it, I love this game. I put some time into the 360 version and one of the first things I realized was how it captured the sense of danger I was looking for--but never found--in a console zombie apocalypse game. I remember being in a shop on a scavenging run, out of ammo, with nothing but a worn out board that was about to break as a zombie horde wandered down the street in front the window I was crouching behind. First time I was actually scared in a game in a long time. Great stuff. I can't wait to play the updated version.

Bought. Discount didn't show up at first, almost accidentally bought at full price - wonder if that's caught anyone out? Quit and reloaded the store and it worked.

Looking forward to getting stuck in!

This will be the third time I've bought the game. Pre-loaded it a while back too.

I've yet to see a single game breaking bug across two other platforms. I'm knocking on wood, and crossing my fingers here, but I hope my apparent "luck" continues.

I'd say it's a bigger mistake not buying it than skipping it due to this game's known jankiness. It's the best zombie/survival game there is, despite any bugs.

I don't think so, I vote with my wallet and will never support games ridden with game-breaking bugs (which is more than a couple of steps further from acceptable "jankiness" for my standards) but to each his own I guess. Halo MCC is a great deal too and full of great games if you look at it that way, yet I'm glad I stayed strong and didn't reward 343i with my money for that unfortunate release.
I'll come around to it later when/if they fix it, it's not like I'm skipping it because I'm not interested in the game/s, quite the opposite!

My understanding from those reviewing the game on Steam is that it's still a mess. Technical issues with janky animations and pop in are still horrible. I'll pass on this for now.

They brought him in after SoD for future projects. It's very promising though!
Very interesting...

In that write up where he mentions having time to kill after coming back from deployment my reaction was: "No you don't. You have another book to write!"

But I'd take a videogame with his hands in it too. :)

Want to buy SoD on principle almost. Sounds like he digs it.

Are these missions REALLY time sensitive? Or is it just the game trying to artificially put me on edge...

The constant "I know you're busy, but we don't have much time." is getting annoying, when I'm trying to do something else.

Beyond that, and the framerate drops, I'm enjoying this quite a bit!

got home and played about an hour of the Lifeline DLC, which i had skipped on the 360. feels good to have so much ammunition for your guns.

anyway, my early impressions are quite positive. visuals are MUCH improved from the 360 and the framerate is also better. slow down is still present, though. nothing glitchy so far but i need to spend more time with it.

solid purchase for $20, i think.

Yep. If you wait to long people die and so forth.

I just purchased this using a birthday voucher from Mighty Ape here in NZ :D
I am going in blind, literally have no idea what type of game this is apart from everyone on my XBL friends list having played it at some stage.

Is there much of a story? Does it feel kind of like a zombie TPS RTS? (if that makes sense with the base building etc)

Combat from YT footage looks kind of like a slower From game, am I way off base?

BTW: The first review I just watched on it was yours Karak, great watch mate!

The steam reviews are pretty wretched. Is the PC version buggier than the xbox one, or is it due to the higher standards expected of a pc game versus xbone

Been playing all day. Noticing more and more flaws but game is still great. Had one person die when I was escorting them back due to a horde :(

Downloading now. Wanted it for PS3/PS4 when it came out for 360, now that I have an Xbox One, I'm happy to take a chance on it. Seems like the gamers/community like it a lot more than reviewers did.
