State of Decay Year One Survival Edition |OT| More P's, Less D's

The steam reviews are pretty wretched. Is the PC version buggier than the xbox one, or is it due to the higher standards expected of a pc game versus xbone

Honestly, I feel like the people who knew what to expect are thoroughly enjoying the updates (for both). People who heralds "1080p" seemed to assume this was triple a to being with or something; all I've been reading are complaints about the graphics and glitches.

But, there's probably some truth to pc players having higher standards for it too. It's far from ideal, but it's still definitely playable and enjoyable.

Yeah. I finally found it by pressing down on the d-pad. I was trying to get to it through the menu accessed by pressing up on the d-pad.

Fore warning, you only get the pack once per save. I got it as soon as i got to the church but the axe broke and i lost the gun and now i can't replace them.

Are these missions REALLY time sensitive? Or is it just the game trying to artificially put me on edge...

The constant "I know you're busy, but we don't have much time." is getting annoying, when I'm trying to do something else.

Beyond that, and the framerate drops, I'm enjoying this quite a bit!

Some are, some aren't. The ones where you need to help your friends, such as hunting for certain zombies and rescuing them are time sensitive, but the rest tend to come back around depending on the time of day.

I just purchased this using a birthday voucher from Mighty Ape here in NZ :D
I am going in blind, literally have no idea what type of game this is apart from everyone on my XBL friends list having played it at some stage.

Is there much of a story? Does it feel kind of like a zombie TPS RTS? (if that makes sense with the base building etc)

Combat from YT footage looks kind of like a slower From game, am I way off base?

BTW: The first review I just watched on it was yours Karak, great watch mate!

theres a fairly standard story that surrounds the base game. revolves around a group of survivors trying to escape a secluded valley town after the zompocalype hits. lifeline takes place from the military perspective, showing their response to the outbreak. this one takes place in the city alluded to in the main story.

combat is rather simplistic, actually. i wouldnt even call it very good. mash on the swing button until the zombie dies. that said, combat isnt something you necessarily want to be doing, especially at lower levels and against zombie hordes. theres a light progression system that lets you specialize in different types of melee and ranged weapons, and it does add some extra depth, however little. a fully leveled up character is fun to play as, though.

and youre not exactly building bases, youre building "towers" within your base that give it special perks. so for instance, say youve got three open tower spaces in your base. you can choose to build a garden to supply food, a workshop to make molotovs, and a warehouse to store your stuff. or you can build a dojo to provide everyone with a boost to their stamina, a sniper platform to keep zombies further away from the base, and dining area to reduce the likelihood of community in-fighting (pro-tip, dont ever build this, its garbage). stuff like that.

You are right in the fact that is feels more like a TPS RTS and that's even how the devs have spoke about it. There are a number of locations that can be moved into and from that point you upgrade them as you see fit using the resources within the game. Additionally you have outposts you can put in many buildings which are basically smaller bases that allow for some actions to be taken far away from home which is nice in the endgame.

The story isn't about the characters at all, its as minimal as the devs could get into the game and still keep the characters moving forward. Its about you. IN fact the devs made it clear that since all the characters can be killed and most can be played its more of a resource management game when it comes to the actual people themselves. In fact the story ends up revolving many times around deaths. Like remembering where a favorite character you played died, or remembering where you escaped almost certain death.
For example there is one house, right near the diner where one of my characters died after an entire night of escaping hordes and slipping through bushes. Every time I drive by it I actually remember that death. Its funny the characterization is within the remembrance. Its odd that way.

As for combat, there are a boatload of special skills and traits and trees as you play, unlocking them as you move forward. It starts with nothing but a swing then moves to special moves, bonuses, and other traits as you excel and decide what to upgrade.

As for speed its right in the middle ground until you get the advanced skills.

And thanks for the kind words.

Oh and Deadly is right. Feral Zombies can be a bitch.

I am only now becoming acquainted with Steam Reviews but as I was warned lately. Steam Reviews usually sit somewhere around the same scum and shit as youtube comments. I have to admit even on games with overly positive scores that seems to be baring out.

Fine, I'll still play. I did love the game on 360 but damn shame it's not at least locked at 30. I mean the game is not exactly a looker.

Xbox One captures from their upload program. Not the best quality though sadly unless I'm doing it wrong.

Thanks for the feedback I'll keep that site in mind. I just recently started creating content again so yeah, getting back into the groove.

Why are some safe areas not saving after a reboot? Is it a glitch or am I forgetting to do something on those ones? I cleared out a few infestations earlier, but after reloading the game, the infestation is gone, but they aren't safe areas anymore either.

Also, it's starting to feel like GTA4, with all the "I'm pouting! Take me for a drive and a chat!" stuff.

Thanks for the info mate - looking forward to putting my teeth into this once I've finished Bloodborne (which should be this week, praise the moon).

So many great games out to play at the moment.. so hard to keep up!

Half the time I have no idea if I am doing things right :p

Should I focus on more survivors? Only have 12.

how many beds do you have? more survivors deplete resources faster. they also fight more amongst themselves, lowering morale and forcing you to engage in missions to "cheer them up"

Did anyone else enjoy Lifeline a lot more than the other modes? I just felt that
saving people, and taking them to your base, so they could be evacuated by helicopters
was a lot more interesting then just trying to survive, like in the other modes.

Does this one still have the real-time clock that carries on when you aren't playing?

That made me stop playing the original despite loving the base-building and supply-hunting.

It has the clock, but it was nerfed so that really bad stuff can't happen to your base or characters.

I play for the graphics.

Honestly if the systems and the gameplay clicks, you kinda look past the jankyness and graphical shortcomings. It's such a great game to be dismissed because of it.

is DLC integrated in the game?
Should i finish main story first or switch to dlc to earn weapons or stats if they transfer..?

On x360 there was a "trick" to make a copy of save file to cloud (or usb?), so it could be restored if needed (feral zombies :( )
Is such thing possible on XB1?

So what does importing your save do? You start with the stats from your 360 game or do you start from where you left in that version?
I imported my save and I had my unlocked Breakdown characters available, but if you're talking about leaderboard stats like zombie kills that seems to have been reset.

So you're just importing basic game progress? Unlocked characters, in game stats (level of characters, etc?)

The transfer stuff seems sort of buggy. A friend of mine had 4240 total zombie kills on 360, and after transferring and then playing for 4 hours, the XB1 leaderboard says he has 93163 total zombie kills. He also told me that importing his save unlocked 7 achievements. My zombie kills seem accurate, they've gone up by about 800 in a few hours of playing. None of my achievements unlocked from the import though.

Not sure if this makes a difference, but I exported from the 360 version and then imported to the XB1 version. He had cloud saves turned on for 360 and used the import feature on the XB1 version. He never used the export option, and it was able to import from his existing cloud save from the old version.

I didn't transfer from 360, but the leaderboards say I've killed over 8m zombies, hahaha

Breakdown is basically freemode right? i was playing that got a bunch of sweet stuff screen went black then it went to desktop i guess all that progress is lost

Glad to hear they nerfed it, was a nightmare before.

They actually nerfed the real-time clock effects pretty soon after the game's original X360 release.

A lot of people were having tons of trouble with it. It was pretty stupid - but I would have liked an option to turn on 'hardcore clock' again :P

Easily my favorite part of the game actually. I adored that mode.

Kinda disappointed it isn't more polished and better-performing than it is right now, but it is considerably better than it was on first X360 and Steam releases. Maybe this time, they'll actually address the glitches with constant fixes...already had one crash out of nowhere on X1 and the game still exhibits that same weird hitching and syncing issues when crossing/streaming into other parts of the map, especially at high speeds in a faster vehicle. Guess they'll start the sequel or MMO followup in better shape as this one feels a bit more of a mostly cosmetic upgrade to an all-in-one edition of the base game with all expansion DLC integrated with some retroactively inserted features and content. Love the new Indian female survivor and the new knife play. All around, seems to be the definitive version of a classic fucking zombie apocalypse action-simulation.

For those interested in all things State of Decay, I and possibly Cadiz(my partner on the channel), will be doing a blowout on all things State of Decay in the next day or so. Everything from the tactics already discussed in my tactics videos, to the new tactics I have discovered recently, to general stories and tales about characters, as well as the future of the franchise(mostly rumours). If you have questions feel free to get in touch with me on my channel or Twitter and I will do my best to add them.

Does anyone know if I pause the game and use Instant-On mode, will that stop the world from changing while I'm not playing?

Bought and download last night, started this morning before work. Chose the main campaign, figured that was a good place to start since this is my first time playing.

Still very early on, haven't even made it out of the campgrounds yet, but it's pretty good. I did drive the truck off the bridge, though XD Had to reload, surrounded by zombies and my hatchet broke.

It's a shame about the performance/glitch issues. I was really hoping for a stable release. I'll probably pick this up when the price drops a bit.

Got to the Church last night, figure I'll start from the beginning again. Love this game. So good.

I love that it can get properly dark at night. Out in the open you can see pretty well, especially if the moon is bright. It's freaky when you get under tree cover or amongst the shadows though. You can still see, but it gets good and dark like it should when there's no power or light source.

On "framerate"....I don't think the framerate is much of a problem really. However, there does seem to be a loading stutter that can show it's head often. Still worth every penny anyway though. It may or may not ever get patched out (if it's an engine/game design problem), so I hope their bigger game that's coming has tons of help from Microsoft.

I didn't hate the real time clock honestly. I like the idea of the world changing and advancing while I'm away. I just wish there was a way to better organize what my survivors did when I'm not controlling them. A fully stocked group of maxed out survivors shouldn't be on there last legs because I haven't played in a week.

And for me never were. It was so odd as they should have been performing the same as if you were there not suddenly worse. I played with that for months and never had anymore than a few die while away. But apparently some people either had everyone die, or felt like that.

Also working on something ultra special for the State of Decay blow out video. Going to be insane.
