I have no problem admitting I was wrong but posting numbers before it went F2P would help me understand the amount of increase. Also did they put out an update with more weapons and a new map this weekend as well? It will be interesting to see if TF2 can sustain the increase as well.

I don't have proof, but TF2 was always below 20,000. It usually hovered between 11,000-13,000 peak users.

RE: ISPs in the steam servers

I'm a comcast subscriber in DC and switched to that server when i read the posts in this thread. I'm downloading Beat Hazard at ~290 kb/s on the DC (Comcast) server. I just switched back to the DC regular server and am getting ~280 kb/s.

I got the speeds I mentioned last night. I just opened Steam and it was downloading the new Back to the Future episode at 1.5 MB. I switched to the regular D.C. server and it rose to 1.8. Now on the Miami 1.6. Steam is just getting hammered today it looks like.



Edit: It looks like the Store and the news feeds are down. Hammered indeed. I dread the chaos the actual sale will inevitably bring.

Yep store is not opening for me, neither are the servers working in TF2 which makes no difference to me since every time I try to play by the "Play now" button I get into a game and then get the "Connection Problem" error and disconnects me.

Bummer, after the update I felt like playing.

The only thing I really want from this sale is Assassin's Creed Brotherhood. Even if it's just $10 off I'll nab it. I hope the multiplayer is still active on PC. I'm also looking for Mirror's Edge for cheap and some indie games. I might pick up Brink if it's on sale at a bomba price.

You can always fill up your Steam Wallet if you have a set amount you want to spend and then use that when the sale begins.

Dunno I'm going to put some faith in the COD community, I don't see them as mindless bots. I don't think the community is trained to spend money but that the amount of changes is worth the price of entry once a year considering the amount of time a normal COP player spends online. Who knows though but until Valve actually release some sales data on hats, I don't see anyone following a F2P model in a FPS.

It's around 12k-17k everyday. Generally, after every update, the numbers swell, but it has a pretty stable userbase. I think TF2 is the only FPS that can sustain a FT2 status because of how the item system works.

I don't really remember them adding a ton of updates. I think the holiday sale only added a few of the indie packs and some of them never even went on sale. Most of the stuff that will go on sale is probably already in there.

Played TF2 with a bunch of people who were new and tried it only because of the F2P. I had a lot of fun playing with them because it was fun hearing them discover new things and see new hats/weapons/accessories. Valve has a really good thing going in TF2. I knew this before it was F2P but this helped reiterate that.

Yup. Any game marked as "Steam Play" includes both a PC and Mac version for your account.

Some games got achievements added with a summer 2011 theme and one of the devs slipped it was for the summer sale. It's just a matter of when. I really hope I don't have to wait till Thursday.

Pretty much because there was one last year. They have been fairly regular with their sales.

Hm. My MBP only has an Intel HD 3000 gpu so I wanted to demo it. When I go to the steam store, it says Download PC demo even though the game is available on Mac. Wtf is this BS

You could be right but personally I don't think "the Steam summer sale" leaves a lot of room for interpretation. If all he meant was the daily sale then that's an incredibly poor choice of words.

I bought Civ IV during the sale a couple weeks, but after reading up more on Civ V and playing it at a friends house, I really think it would be more up my alley, at least as a new player. Not having to deal with Gamespy is a plus as well.

So, that's another game on my summer list. Right now i'm looking at:

Bad Company 2
Sims 3
Civ V
Random cheap indie games.


So, it's not looking at all like i'll be able to keep myself under $40 like I wanted to.

It's downloading at 1MB/sec but gah, it's such a tease waiting for an hour or something I remember back in the days in school where we were blown away by having a 256k connection. Going back to PC gaming feels like going back to using the PC!
