It started on a Thursday last year. Then again, it also ended on July 4th last year, which is why I assumed it would be today.

Is there any way to globally stop automatic updating?

Getting so sick of being in an online game (non steam) that starts lagging like hell because Steam decides to update something because I didn't right click > disable updates for 100+ games.

The easiest way is to either shut down Steam or launch your game through Steam (click "+ add game" in bottom left corner). That should prevent Steam for updating files while in game.
