magicka (base game) for $2.49 or /w a bunch of DLC for $6, which is all mainly robes and i think one of em actually has a few missions.

magicka for $2.49 is a great value though. i only played like 2 hrs when i got it back for like $3 and it was pretty great. in the backlog ldo.

New robes for Magicka turn you into a headcrab zombie, a WoW character, and the Tentacle from Day of the Tentacle.

Bought Magicka but no DLC. Since this game came out I've been trying to decide if I wanted it or not, it seems like it's meant for co-op which is a no no for me but for $2.50 it's worth the risk.

Yes, you can play from the beginning in co-op.

Magicka is a lot of fun and is worth playing.

BUT:
A) It's pretty damn hard in single player
B) It's not your traditional multiplayer game where you just join a server, you pretty much have to plan ahead with your friends

Let me show you through these halls, my friend, where treasures of indie gaming await...
EVERYONE remotely interested in the old Sierra Point and Click Adventures (and who can forgive the 4:3 resolution due to the gorgeous art), get The Whispered World. One of my favourite Adventures ever with quite a few interesting and later even hard puzzles.

Obligatory beautyshot:

Me, my sister and my girlfriend all played through this gem in no time, and both of those rarely actually play games. It is charming to no end and I cant recommend it enough for the world and the old Sierra feeling. Definitely one of the more underrated Adventures out there.

And yeah, voice acting is annoying, in every language.

Just trying to be honest. Locked to 4:3 because of the pixel art, which is really beautiful.
I dont want anyone to feel bad about buying it because they didnt knew that after I "advertised" it, since there are quite a few who think this might deter from their enjoyment.

Really, it is a rather special game and totally a throwback to these old Sierra games (think Kings Quest 7) which gave me many, many nostalgic feelings.

How long is it ? How crazy are the puzzles ?

My opinion on Magicka: it's a fun little game. It is primarily made for co-op: in coop dying isn't that big of a deal, as you can revive each other. In sp, you can't and that coupled with the checkpoint system can make things frustrating. And when you are playing with others, there are you so much spells flying around, things have to go hilariously wrong sometime ;)
As for the DLC, I'm not impressed by it. DLC is either new costumes, new maps or the Vietnam mission. The Vietnam mission has a fun premise: Magicka in Vietnam, but the introduction of guns for all enemies makes it frustrating (off screen instakills are rampant), especially since the mission doesn't have a checkpoint at all.
Maps are for survival mode or PVP. Not really something I can recommend to everyone.
Costumes are primarily cosmetic, but they give you some buffs (and new weapons) but nothing substantial. Plus there are now 5 free robes.
I recommend the base game, but not the DLC, at least not right away.

The puzzles are very diverse, ranging from "find this" to more obscure real puzzles where you need to adjust several objects in the environment to unlock the next part. I just loved how even the "find this"-puzzles were integrated in the story and always were good for a surprise. One example would be finding an item in the first scene where the location was so clever that I will never forget where it was hidden. Stupid me just never looked there, it wasnt totally out of the blue. It was just cleverly hidden instead of needing to search for it Pixel by Pixel. It gets gradually harder and the first few levels are a breeze to play through while the latter levels will test your Puzzle skills quite a lot. It should take you about 20 hours if you rarely play Adventures and maybe 13-16 if you are apt at them.

Also, the imaginative world is soooo worth a play through. And everyone who started but didnt finish -> Finish that game, if needed with a walkthrough.

Besides the obnoxious voice acting, I thought it had really funny moments and was also very good at emotional story telling.

Yeah, bought on aesthetic. It looks like a beautiful world full of character. Watched a few YT vids and it definitely looks like something I want to experience.

Thanks for the info.

I know that too well and I also need to be in the right mood to play adventures anyway. No chance I'll finish even a 4th of the games I already have until the winter sale... with more games to buy... and advertise for the ones listening to me! :p

God I wish I had my uni loan so I could buy Whispered World :( I have £1.75 in my account though ffs! Haha.

It better be repeated on Christmas sale, yo.

You are a nice guy. Steam ID? Have I already added you perhaps?

Damn, I'd buy it for you, but I realized just now that a german version wouldnt make too much sense for you I suppose.

:( :( :(

magicka 4pack is $1.87 per copy for just the base game. don't think you can buy the collection 4pack. sick price.
Ah yeah sorry, I meant the complete package is not available as 4-pack. It is a pretty sweet deal.

Haha, no not really. There's too many games to play to accept them from other people anyway :p Thanks for the offer, though! I assume you're the guy who just added me on Steam?

It really does look cool. I need to get it when it's next on sale and also Lost Horizon. I love me some good adventure games :)

25 of my friends own Darksiders. At this point, you might just wanna give it to someone for free.

I don't run a charity, I'd rather have it rot. It's a $20 game, someone is bound to want it for the $7.99 that is Astro Tripper.

darksiders has been $5 twice and that's just the last month. good luck selling it, will be tough, as most forum goers are very price savvy.

Just got home to see The Whispered World on sale, and I knew Toma would be on here selling it. Been hoping for a sale on this since I skipped out on it during the Summer sale.

Bought!!

I was a little torn about getting Whispered World, I read some reviews and they were pretty mixed, while user reviews were actually good. Then I read Toma's opinions and decided to get it, I think it will jump ahead of my backlog, since I was just deciding what to play these days on the PC.

That said, why do "professional" critics never feel these alternative, inspiring, heartfelt and beautiful even if flawed games? Not talking strictly about Whispered here since I still have to play it, but I have a lot of other examples of this.
It's the old same story, they only give 9s and 8s (7s even) to AAA titles, it's really a shame and a bad thing for the industry actually, imvho.

I'm assuming it's something you probably got for free, as THQ is always tossing it in with other games. I can understand wanting something in return, but as others have said it's on sale for 5 dollars every third Wednesday, and the attitude you seem to be exhibiting here probably won't have many people wanting to help you out by paying more for the game so that you'll get something you want.

To find good adventure games these days I have to go to adventure game specific websites... or look at a random game when it's on sale on Steam.

I do believe I heard about Whispered World for the first time in a "PC Exclusives to watch" thread here on GAF a while ago.

It sucks, but hey, at least new adventure games are being made :)
