She plays quite a lot of games, and loves complex strategy like Anno 1404. She doesn't play action games though and hates being challenged, or dying. Fable is the only game which lets her explore environments, solve quests and find items without the usual risk of death, while incorporating social aspects from other games she likes (eg harvest moon). I'm sure there are a lot of people like her on gaf, or there would be without the elitist "gamer culture" scaring them away and dogpiling on a unique franchise like Fable, that caters to a sorely overlooked demographic. (sorry for the rant, and I'm obviously not talking about you, but I feel pretty strongly about this).
She sounds a lot like me when it comes to gaming tastes to be honest :D. I don't even mind the lack of difficulty in Fable III (or Fable II), but I think like what Snuggler noted, that the developers have made some very lazy choices. I was actually really looking forward to the moral choices you make
when you're king
, but when you have to choose between an orphanage and a brothel, that isn't really compelling to me. The mechanic of being put in that role and making choices each day is a very good one, but you have to make proper use of it, and they didn't. The rest of the game I felt similarly about, I wanted far more to explore and I wanted to see more enemy types. It's not about not being challenged, it's about not being surprised. The same reason I don't watch '2 Broke Girls' is the reason I didn't like Fable III, I don't want to see everything coming a mile away, because then it's just not interesting any more.

Edit: One example of a game that does what Fable III should do for me is Assassin's Creed II (and Brotherhood). There's no real challenge there, you are basically an immortal, on the replay of Brotherhood I finished today I never even used my sword, just everything with the hidden blade. What the franchise does offer though is a large and interesting world to explore and many quests with some pretty good variety there.

The reason us KM+M guys rave about it is because of the mouse part. 1:1 smooth, direct input. Makes aiming a joy. It's very hard to get that on a console pad.
I have been using a Logitech trackball mouse for as long as I have had my new computer. Do I remember those standard mouse precision days? Yes. Is it that important to me now? No.

On the other hand, controllers are nice because everything you need is right there, in your hands, with no extra buttons or keys.
Exactly. Feels so good. So relaxing.

Really, this argument is boring, and this is the Steam thread, not the whine thread. So I recommend going to google.com and searching for a joypad configuration for the Max Payne games. :)
I didn't come in whining, I came in asking a simple question about support. Some old shooters have zero capacity for controllers and you have to rely on some janky ass outside program that attempts translating gamepad into KB/M inputs only to fail as miserably as emulating Mario 64 on KB/M.

Anyway, OT3 is starting soon. Let's try to NEVER JUDGE ANYONE FOR THEIR INPUT PREFERENCE in the new thread. Some people like gamepads. It's old news. It is understood. Everyone get over it.

I thought you started it by saying all games that use more buttons than a 360 controller has suck.

Then I guess you should have paid closer attention.

When's the L4D and L4D2 bundle going to be discounted on Steam? It's $30 now but I'm hoping there will be a sale soon so I can pick it up. Any possibility of a Halloween sale this year? If the price were right, the L4D bundle and the Penumbra bundle would seem like good food for my horror gamer's soul.

Hey, while I'm at it, someone list all the quality horror games available on Steam. And before you say it, I have Amnesia (just beat it last night, in fact)!

Clive Barker's Jericho is $4.99.

not a spectacular game, but i thought it was decent enough for $5.

Obviously mentioning some you already have, this is a more general list for anyone who likes the horror:

Horror Games on Steam you should buy:
Amnesia
Penumbra
Dead Island
Dead Rising 2
Alice (shutup it's horror)
Resident Evil 5
Call of Cthulu
Cryostasis
Aliens Versus Predator Classic (marine campaign)
Dead Space 1/2
Doom3 and RoE expansion
FEAR 1/2
Killing Floor
Left4Dead 1/2

Horror Games on Steam you should force your worst enemy to play:
Silent Hill: Homecoming

Does anyone else have an issue with categories simply disappearing when you log into another computer? i thought they were supposed to be saved on the Steam Cloud?

We really need a more efficient way to sort our games/friends without having to go through each one individually.

Isn't Dead Rising 2 more like zombie comedy? I'm curious about Cryostasis, but right now it's so hot where I am so it would feel off. Metro 2033 seems like a horror game from what I've played.

To me Dead Rising 2 still counts because it has a horror "theme", although from a gameplay perspective it's a lot more like a sandbox action game. Cryostasis is an exceptional game which is ruined by a fixation on guns in the second-half, like a lot of horror games.

I did think about adding STALKER and Metro 2033 because both feature some of the scariest sequences I've played in games. I decided against it in the end for some reason but in retrospect they should probably be there.

I've been out of the Fable market since the original. It was interesting enough, but overall I found the whole hero thing with little story to be a bit underwhelming. Kill this evil bastard, but I am an evil bastard, okay he's dead....that changed nothing :[

So what's the big beef with Fable 3 other than it looks like they are using the original animations... I'm bored and games on sale are hard to turn down.

The design is obtuse and tedious, the game is piss easy, and the game is short for an rpg are the main complaints

You make a compelling argument to buy something else. Though, I really shouldn't, I have a ton of half played games in my library and I just bought Portal 2 and the Crysis bundle. I think I have a problem.

Already answered, but the big beef is that it's shit.

The biggest problem for me would be the side quests. I could get by with a mediocre story, graphics, audio reuse, etc... but I don't know if I want to deal with a side quest structure like that. Or the blocking sections off. Which sucks because I want to play a Fable after watching my friend play Fable 2 for a few hours on the 360 but I don't want to play there but Steam only has 3!

And I think I'd rather play Rage. Stupid disposable income making me want games I don't need right now.

Here I am again to defend Fable III.

As a fan of the series, Fable III is pretty much par for the course. The humor is all still there and the Action RPG elements are still just as enjoyable as they were in Fable II. The big beef most people have with the game are the new menu systems and the end... it's not Shit, as much as Fable II wasn't shit.

There is a sequence around the mid-point where you play in a Dungeons and Dragons like adventure... I won't spoil it be damn if it isn't funny and very well executed. There are many examples of this kind of thing throughout the game and it's very much worth the 17 bucks.

I dreamt my HP Touchpad was running W8 last night. I was running Revenge of the Titans and my LucasArts games through Steam. It was glorious.

And any possibility of it is at least a year in the future. Weep with me.

Fable: TLC was released on the PC, so you should be able to find it somewhere (GfWL Marketplace? Ebay?). Fable 2 is exclusive to the X360, however.

The notion that Fable III is somehow a natural progression of the Fable II formula is laughable. Many fundamental game design foundations are starkly different between the two games. Fable III continues the work of Fable II only insofar that it's a sequel worse than its predecessor.

Fable 3 was only $12 last month from "GFWL Marketplace". I didn't jump then and I won't jump in at $5 more (since I already own it on the 360). It had promise, but the end game is just so frustratingly bad that it left a terrible aftertaste. Fassbender is awesome though.

You make a convincing argument to buy the game :[

If I said I did not enjoy the original I would be lying. Well I might as well live it up while I have disposable income. I'm pretty weak willed for any game <20 dollars. If its <10 the credit card comes out immediately. So when can I sue DD for game buying addiction?

It's only convincing if you wish it to be.

Edit: Seeing as you didn't particularly care for Fable, there's a chance you'll get a kick out of Fable III. As someone who loved the original and enjoyed the sequel, it's a huge disappointment in every respect, however.

Haha, I currently have no will of my own due to hunger -- why isn't it lunch time yet! Also good thing I can't actually buy it until I get home from work.

It doesn't need to be that convincing, it's not like I gave a glowing review of the game. I enjoyed the new direction of the menus and level progression system.

And no, it's not a natural progression from Fable II, but it's still clearly and lovingly a Fable game everywhere it matters.

You're ignoring a literal deluge of negative impressions to latch on to the sole nutball who enjoyed the game?

And therein lies the crux of my issue. While the creative underpinnings of the series are still very much intact in Fable III, there's very little game. Fable III is akin to an interactive pop-up book rather than the streamlined Action-RPGs of its past.

Edit: Clarity.

I can't really argue with that I suppose, but the part of Fable I love the most are the things that surround the sub-par RPG elements, and Fable III is just as crude and darkly humorous as I want it to be.
