I'm a completionist as well. The only games that I think really did secondary quests well are Defender's Quest (sidequests are only in new game+) and Dragon's Quest (VIII and IX at least had whole lines of quests you couldn't even see until you beat the game). Everywhere else, you're showing up to an end boss that was balanced for casual play but you're equipped with the ultimate arsenal of the heavens or you 100%'d your Compendium and have some crazy god-tier demons/personas so powerful that "faceroll" is a perfectly viable tactic for every situation.

If memory serves, I didn't die once during KoA's final boss fight and it was over almost as quickly as it had begun. I considered pursuing the DLC missions after the curtain had closed on the main campaign, but at this point I'd spent ~130 hours with the game over the course of about two months, so "more of the same" wasn't something I was particularly interested in so soon.

How varied is the content, secondary and otherwise? Like, on a scale of 1 to New Vegas.

Just tried to play Crusader Kings II, wtf am I doing.

Not going through the tutorial it seems :p

Crusader Kings II is probably the most approachable game of its type.. If you can't get into it make sure to avoid EU4, although they are quite different games but Crusader Kings II has more directly "fun" elements (primarily due to the personable elements and related backstabbing) than prior Europa Universalis have had. Although they're adding the random events to EU and ones based on actual historical events.

Oh rock of ages, do not crumble, love is breathing still. Oh lady moon shine down, a little people magic if you will.

Dead Kell looks pretty cool, but then again, that's manily due to my pirate sense tingling.

My mom played the heck out of Kingdom Of Amalur, like 220 hours. And she still found on or two new side-quests. So much stuff. I find the idea that games like that get expansionpacks a little bit crazy.

Got really easy though. Hammer+Faeblades after completing all the sidequests in the first town = pwnage.

Are we serious about that comparison?
Yes.
We've speculated that it would start on the 11th for a couple weeks now, kept the title the way it is to tone down on the spam.

An analog signal is preferable to digital. That is why we have things like sound cards, DACS, Receivers, etc.

What do you think happens when you pump your audio, through your HDMI, into your expensive receiver? The reason we like HDMI over component is because it has significantly higher bandwidth than component and can carry a larger audio file....to then be converted to analog.

This makes absolutely no sense.
Sending a signal that is already digital through a digital cable is preferable, because it will not degrade.the signal. If you understand what a digital signal is, it's easy to understand this. An analog cable will always have signal degradation to some level due to noise.

Now, if the signal has an analog source, it's probably best to use analog cables unless you the cable is very long and unbalanced, in which case it might actually be better to have a mindblowing (and mindblowingly expensive) digital to analog converter. A near-theoretically perfect DAC can add so little distortion as to be imperceptible to the human ear,

The blurb you posted fails to mention that in the DAC component the digital signal is converted back into analog, and contains none of the steps or "shorter sounds" as they put it. It is converted back into a perfectly continuous, perfectly analog sound. A speaker actually can't play back a digital sound, it would have to break the laws of physics in order to do so.

Here is a white paper on converters, which explains (with some math) how it is theoretically possible to take an analog sound, convert it into digital "shorter sounds" or "steps" and then convert it back to analog with 100% accuracy:

http://lavryengineering.com/pdfs/lavry-sampling-theory.pdf

Note that the sound information coming from a game inside of a computer is already digital. If we were talking about a analog source, and wanting to keep a fully analog signal path, I would agree with you in 99% of cases that we should use analog cabling (with a big preference towards balanced cables).

Unless there is some sort of extra processing going on with the data being sent, or the equipment is malfunctioning, just something being bluetooth is not going to "degrade" the signal.

(also, you're exactly right about component bandwidth, from a quick google search I did. However, There is no reason why an analog cable could not send 1080p signals, it's the agreed upon standard called "component" and it's bandwidth limitations)

Apparentely the summer sales is starting tomorrow, according to a post on reddit.

And reddit link for said post
This was posted three pages ago ^^

But it was pretty much confirmed this morning anyway. There was no weekly deal update yesterday (hint 1), and the midweek madness sales end at 10am on Thursday instead of 4pm (hint 2).

I certainly missed the tutorial. I looked for it too...

Not sure what advice to offer, what country is your copy from although it shouldn't matter? It's right in the main menu next to multiplayer.

Speaking off Crusader Kings II, does anyone have it installed on an SSD and if so how does it affect the opening load times?

Advent Rising hasn't seen a single discount over the past three years. That's why I don't own it.

How varied is the content, secondary and otherwise? Like, on a scale of 1 to New Vegas.

They're largely your standard hunting quests or fetch quests, and while a few of them span the entire game (e.g. collecting some bloke's erotic fiction), their design decidedly uninspired.

Edit: Some of the more important missions are more varied, though. For example, there's one mission towards the end of the game where you have to rush about to defend a castle that's under attack, and it culminates in a boss fight.

I've not played New Vegas so I'm not sure where KoA would fall on your scale. ;)

I've beaten both DLC expansions, and the main story in both of them (didn't try the sidequests) is comparable (if not better than) to the factions questlines in the main game.

Highly recommended if you liked the game, both of them.

Maybe I thought the tutorial was fine given I had played prior EU titles which share some base similarities. Watching 40 minute long tutorial videos isn't going to convince many people to play :D

That written LP is probably better.

I'd recommend doing the factions questlines, DLC expansions if you have them, and maybe the erotic fiction just for laughs.

Do the rest only if the game's getting too tough for you.

The Warsworn faction questline has amazing Chaotic Evil ending, just FYI

Good to hear! I remember another GAFer saying that the DLC is well worth playing through.

With summer sale coming, what's the game with the best (in interesting, original and surprising way) story on steam, in your opinion?

I just wonder who the people are that are going to buy a game before it goes on a daily deal.

Salsa needs to make a wall of shame for those people.

On the bright side, being burned so will ensure they won't make the same mistake again. ;)

The Void, the way the game builds its world and atmosphere is unlike any other game out there. More people really need to experience the Void and how much unique it does, Ice-Pick Lodge are brilliant.

The Walking Dead

I'd like to add Alan Wake - I constantly searched for every single piece of info/lore I could within the game, even stopping to listen to all of the conversations on the radio.. (rare for me) and the ending stuck with me for a couple of weeks. combat does get a little tiresome, though - maybe play it on easy if it bugs you.

So, it's a single-player MMO?

My first playthrough of New Vegas was ~170 hours, including all DLC, and I don't recall a single quest to kill 10 bears or collect 10 bear asses. You should play it sometime, it's probably Saoirse's favorite game.

*reminisces about Shadow Hearts Covenant*

New Vegas and KOTOR 2.

Don't like tWD, sorry folks. And I wouldn't call anything zombie related original, but that just me.
Also thanks for reminding me that I have yet to play Void!
What else?

edited: wait, so Void is no good?

*pft* Shadow Hearts 1 & 2 are infinitely better in story.
Don't you know that "Covenant" is how you say "2" in English? But anyway, collecting gay pornography to inspire tailors to make dresses that give your puppet new attacks is something more RPGs need to have.

Nice try Mr. The Void official PR manager.

:p

Not much people enjoyed Anna, so it'll be hard to recommend The Void, except for the NUDITY!

The Void is a considerably more interesting game mechanically, I think the complaints with Anna often come from the point and click puzzle/item hunting which can get overly frustrating. The Void's frustrations come from the incredibly alien world it creates and the fact that many of the mechanics aren't in any other games, not to mention the people who are giving you advice often lie :D I think one could dislike how Anna plays and still get into, or at least appreciate what the Void does.

Everyone buy the Void

Bear in mind that it's just an assumption at this stage. The most telling sign is that Bio2's MP build has seen quite a bit of tinkering, but this could simply be due to the MP achievements that are being integrated into the game (they show up within the client but they're not live just yet).

I hope that BioShock 2 and the Arkham games are only the beginning of games having GFWL removed. I want these to be free of that atrocity as well:

Bulletstorm
Dark Souls: Prepare To Die Edition
DiRT 3
Dead Rising 2
Dead Rising 2: Off the Record
Insanely Twisted Shadow Planet
Iron Brigade
Lost Planet 2
Resident Evil 5
Super Street Fighter IV: Arcade Edition
Virtua Tennis 4
Warhammer 40k: Dawn of War II + Chaos Rising

I doubt it will happen for most though :/

No matter, even the hope that this blight upon gaming might be erased from existence makes me feel happy.
