I just tried to play the demo for Medieval II Total War to see if I should get it on the Steam deal, and I have no clue what's going on in this game. They teach you the controls but little else for how you actually win a battle.

I haven't played an RTS since Command & Conquer Tiberian Sun. The Cortez battle I lost with no clue as to why, the second demo battle was a draw and I had no idea why, and the last demo battle I won with no clue as to why!

How exactly do you route an enemy? Which troops are best for which tasks?

It's been a long time, but there's still a limited amount of rock paper scissors in the battles. But flanking and terrain is extremely important as well, so you have to pay attention to your formations and how and where you set up your troops.

The enemy will retreat if they are overwhelmed and losing, so you want to pick at their forces if you can.

Just heard that Counterstrike: Source is only $5.00 this weekend. Hopefully this will lead to an influx of other n00bs so I can actually join a game and not get crushed in two seconds every time. :D

Picked up the game up 2 years ago or so on clearance at Circuit City but the game was practically impenetrable. Should have known the couple of years between playing regular CS and playing Source was enough for me to fall completely behind.

Apparently that patch they released for Borderlands today added SecureROM to the game.
I posted my screenshots and what I found in the Borderlands thread, but just to reiterate, we only KNOW that the DLC has SecuROM. The patched Borderlands.exe executable now has the string "SecuROM" mentioned a few times, but I don't know if it's actually using it, or if it's just the hooks to work with the DLC...

*edit*

CS:S is up now for $4.99.
FINALLY. I've been waiting for years, basically, for that thing to go below $20. :lol Will buy.

Please tell me that that isn't the weekend deal.

I really hope they didn't add Securom to the original game. If they did, they should update the Steam Store page. It's messed up to sell a game with no kind of DRM (with the exception of the Steam DRM) and then suddenly tack it on without warning in a patch.

I want to buy CS:S but I'm afraid for my manhood.

Honestly, CSS helped to make me an internet man. The sheer amount of awful shit you can run into in that game was unbelievable. It made me jaded to shock pictures, playing music through mics, hackers, being hated on. I miss those days and wish we could get a decent Gaf group together for some 5 on 5s or 8 on 8s.

This is making me go away from the CSS deal. I can live with that shit ON THE INTERNET, but i'd prefer them to stay off my games.

Never works. We had TF2 servers going for a while but it eventually disintegrates.

Yeah, that's why I would love to get a solid group of Gaffers who played once a week or so. Mics would be used for legitimate reasons, sprays wouldn't be used at all, and ridiculous insults would be every other thing said.

The best bet would probably be to just jack an empty server that has the majority of the settings you want for the group you are playing with. Empty servers aren't too hard to find.

I'd be down for a gaf CS:S group. I'll be picking this up tonight, been meaning to get back into CS for a long time.

Spray hatin' makes me sad. What better way to combine video games and hardcore pornography?

Anyway, we did have a decent-sized group of people playing CS:S a few years back where we would just crash an empty and populate it. Was pretty fun, but I think TF2 coming out put a stop to it.

Yeah, especially if it has some type of voting enabled. Is there any way to search for that?

CSS isn't too bad, I played it a lot on my old computer before the likes of TF2 came out. Try and find a zombie mod server and you will have hours of stupid fun :lol

I saw some dark dark shit because of sprays.... *shudders*

Java, I don't think there is anyway to search for servers with voting, but any servers with normal map rotations should have it anyways. RTV baby.

I wonder how much money those fuckers are making.

It seems like there's new DLC at least twice a week.

goddamn

EDIT: I'd also actually probably play CS:S if we got a big enough group going. The only reason I always avoid is because the community is balls for people who suck.

And I

suck.

I bought Counter Strike Source. It gave me a free guest pass. I asked a lot of my Steam friends that don't already have the game. None of them wanted it. If anyone wants it just post your steam ID in this thread and it's yours.

I own my copy from a pre order on HL2, which also came with the entire old HL collection at the time. Scary how I had more fun with CSS then HL2...

Downloaded CS Source to see if anything had changed, after spending awhile combing through the servers i found a populated that wasnt modded, running a custom map or de_dust2. Great lets do this :D 5 minutes later a vote popped up for a map change, every single person picked dust2.......

Uninstalled.

Just in case anyone wants to know/hasn't found out yet, in order to get the cheaper price on HoI3 you need to get all 4 of the new dlc packs

I find that the CS:S community is actually pretty decent. Not too much whining or cheating or whatever (compared to, say, the L4D2 community). Either the immature players have moved on long ago, or most players have spent so many hours playing that they're bored with raging or whining.

But, yeah, dust2 is a problem. So many servers have just that map on rotation (plus a bit of office now and then).

Which has a bigger player-base, CS 1.6 or CS Source?

For high level play. 1.6
For Pub play, probably Source. The competitive Source community died down a lot.
Both games have over 50k people playing so ya. I wouldn't worry about a drying up community in either game. Original CS has been going strong for almost 10 years. That game will never die, and I still scrim daily.

Well, if you have 1.6, and actually like 1.6, there's no reason to get source.

We had a GAF server and some nightly GAF games about two years ago or less. I don't think it lasted for very long though and they ended up getting rid of the server.

It's hard to believe that CS is now over 10 years old and is still one of the most played FPS games out there. I don't think any other game will ever get more hours out of me than CS did. I had an amazing time with it even during the early versions (started playing during beta 2). Actually, I kinda miss some of the mechanics of the beta versions. They were a lot faster paced.

Anyone that hasn't bought CS yet is missing out on one of the greatest multiplayer games of all time. Buy it.

The other maps take too long because no ones knows them. So you're sitting around waiting on it to end, eventually settling on a d2 server. And server admins don't have the sense to limit round time to 1:30 or less.

Best to actually participate in scrims if you want to play other maps.

That would be a rage uninstall? Even worse than ragequitting.

Yeah i'm pretty sick of office and de_dust2. That' my biggest problem with CSS. Most of the servers seem to only play those maps these days. Haven't managed to find a well-populated server, with a full rotation.
CSS for $5 is a sweet deal, considering buying a another copy for my brother to play together. <3 steam.

Neither of those hold a candle to the rage reboot. You know, repeatedly hitting the reset button on the tower?

Ooh, or how about the rage reformat. Where only an OS install will cleanse the ashes left in the wake of your fury.

Not that I've ever done anything of the sort.

Works for me, I love dust2! I always head for the catwalk no matter which team I'm on. It's the same as the CS1.6 dust2 right? I haven't played source before.

Yep, get into scrimmages if you want to really play CS. It's a totally different game. I only have cash or I would buy this (even though I'll still just play 1.6).

mIRC + CS is really the only way to play.
