Well, now I own three copies of San Andreas. PS2 original, PS2 three-pack version, and Steam. :lol

I actually own the GTA trilogy pack for PS2 before getting the GTA pack on Steam, unfortunately i don't own a PS2 so i guess that was dumb of me.

I guess it might be one of the drawbacks to Steam's streamlined install process. Or do some games get around it? I can't remember it doing that for Valve games. But yeah, one of the more irritating things about Steam.

Clearly, you have only ever installed games through steam.

But people are seriously complaining about a 5-10 second interval of time when playing a game for the first time? Ehhhh...

It bugs the hell out of me. Not only because I have to sit through useless runtime installation every time, but also because I have over a GB of DirectX/VC++ installations on my Steam hard drive. :lol

It is much longer than 5 to 10 seconds.

But yeah, I guess disc games do the same? . . . but can't someone fix this? Is this some Microsoft protocol? Is anything actually getting loaded or is it just doing the same thing over and over again?

Could some kind soul please gift me GTA:San Andreas. Unfortunately I get the dreaded "This item is currently unavailable in your region" when I try and buy it.

I'll paypal whoever gifts it to me plus some extra $$ for the hassle.

Steam ID is goonbridge

That's probably just the easiest way for developers to ensure that your DirectX is fully installed and up to date. It's not a Steam-specific thing.

So I was really excited to finally get to play Dirt since I never got it on consoles and I loved the demo back in the day.

I download the 6gig game over a few hours and try it out.
Game doesn't work :(

The menus work fine but when I try to start a race, once the race is loaded and it's about to show the actual race graphics I get a black screen with a windows bubble that says it's crashed. I looked around and apparently this is happening to about half the people on Win7. I'm on Win7 64bit Ultimate.

From the steam forum:
DiRT 1 works perfectly fine on Windows 7 with the latest retail patch applied (it removed part of the SecuROM protection that made it incompatible in the first place).
For some idiotic reason this patch was never applied to the Steam version and the retail patch is incompatible as far as I know.

Remember the old saying:
Never buy a Codemasters game on Steam ... unless you want to be screwed over.

Between Fuel not working because of no-keys, and me spending 2 hours downloading Dirt and 30 mins fooling around with it trying to get it running to no avail...honestly not that happy with Steam despite the good price on the deal. While the interface is soooo much better than GOG, more and more I'm getting all kinds of compatibility errors with anything I buy off steam that isn't very recent. Whereas everything off GOG always works great. Plus I can use official and unofficial patches/mods on GOG games, but most don't work on steam games (like in the case here with dirt) :|

Is there any way to use a 360 controller in Vice City? I don't see any options for gamepads and the KB/M controls look weird.
The game came out before the 360 existed (obviously) but the manual does indicate that there is support for a 'joypad'. So I would think you should be able to get something to work.

GTA: SA manual on steam:
http://cdn.steampowered.com/Manuals/12120/manual.pdf?t=1270602383

I haven't tried it though, so I don't know.

Stupid Dirt 2 won't recognize my controller.

I guess it's time I bought a wired 360 pad since the receivers for the wireless controllers are pretty much impossible to find now.

Dirt 2, and many other modern games, will recognize any controller just fine, as long as you use some kind of 360 pad emulation software.

You buy it in a pack with a wireless controller these days. You could always just use the 360 controller emulator for now though.

Edit: VIce City works with controllers, yes, but the m&kb controls are much better in the old GTA games. The shooting is terrible on a controller.

The second one is even better in my opinion. You get to play as Mona Sax! Also, I love setpieces in 2. There is some seriously awesome shit in there. But yeah, if you are two cheap to buy this series, one of the greatest action series of our time, than something is wrong with you. Like you can't like 3rd person shooters or shooting things or awesome writing and not love these games.
it is true

max payne 2 is even better

i would kill for a max payne 3 holy god

Well if Bully comes back on sale I definitely recommend everyone picks it up. Of all the old Rockstar titles its the one with the best PC port. The rendering engine is fully updated to modern standards (global dynamic soft shadows, self shadowing, depth of field, normal maps, msaa support, per-pixel lighting, lots of nice additions) and it has 100% plug and play support for the 360 controller with icons and everything. Looks really good at 1080p. 100x better than the terrible Manhunt 2 port.

The framerate is locked at 30fps but its no biggie for this sort of game really, means you'll get literally zero drops on even very modest hardware, so yeah this is definitely the definitive version of the game by some distance.

The character models are still low poly of course, but the new shaders and lighting engine really give scenes an awful lot more depth and the excellent image quality doesn't hurt either.

Bah, bought San Andreas without realize you apparently can't use mods with the Steam version without using a no-cd crack. Oh well, I'll keep looking for a way around it, but at least I can play SA again, since my PS2 is dead and I have a slim PS3 now.

haha, I turned Debug mode on in FUEL, hit Unlock All and got 19 achievements :lol
Oh no! The sanctity of achievements has been breached! Just wait for the mobs to come calling for your ban from Steam.

You sure about that? Think that only applies to specific mods. By far and away the best mod for the game (ENB series) works just fine with my Steam copy.

I was just about to buy it, then I decided to look around to see if I could mod the steam version. Does anyone know if it's possible to mod it without using a crack?

Anyone see the content pack trailer for Shattered Horizon?

Bought this game when there was a steam deal a while back and was a bit disappointed at the lack of weaponry. After watching this trailer, though, I can't wait to hop back on! Looks like there's a shotgun, pick axe, sniper cannon of some sort, sub machine gun and a pistol now!

May 5th. Free to download. Can't. Fucking. Wait!!!!!!!!!! :D

Hmm, will check up on that then. I read it on the Steam forums for the GTA series. A couple people said mods don't work with the Steam version, but they may have just been talking about SA-MP, which if that's the case, I don't really care. Thanks for the heads up though. Also, which version of the ENB series mod are you using? The latest one seems to be v0075c2.

I'm thinking about picking up the codemaster's racing pack. How do driving games handle with a mouse and keyboard? I know in RF:G I hated driving using WSAD.

They don't. Buy a wheel or plug in one of your console controllers.

FUEL might be one of my favorite games. I could spend hours just finding cool spots on the map. I just raced down a snowy mountain in a lightning storm. It was awesome.

Everyone should get this. It's less than 4 fucking dollars!

Eh? Admittedly it's been a while since I've done a disc install, but I'm pretty sure I've had a few games do a check on my current DX version and let me skip the install. And like spec said, it's usually longer than 10 seconds. Yeah, it's not the end of the world, but it's still an annoyance, and in 2010 games should be able to do better.

I second the Bully recommendation -- it's a really solid port, and from what I've played so far it's probably one of my favorite Rockstar games. Apart from some inexplicable slowdown at a few points, it runs really nicely.

That looks pretty awesome. I hope it coincides with a sale or free weekend since the community seems dead as all hell.

Shattered Horizon is really fun in theory but in practice I just sucked too much I guess.

But maybe having more weapons would make it more enjoyable for me! I did see that the content pack was coming a few days ago, and I'm at least mildly interested. If nothing else I might jsut jump back in a few times for some more space porn. :3

EDIT: Random PC Fraps question.

I'm playing Indiana Jones and the Fate of Atlantis, the Steam version. In fullscreen, Fraps doesn't work! Is there... anything I can do about that. Works fine windowed. It's not a huge deal, but I do like to take random screenshots of games I'm playing. ):

EDIT EDIT: Actually it's kind of buggy in windowed mode, too. Sometimes it takes forever to register key presses, so I don't get the screenshot I even want. Also Fraps might say the game's running at 1fps when it's clearly not. O:

I assume it's just Old Game Syndrome and there's nothing I can do. ):

EDIT EDIT EDIT: It also doesn't capture the dialogue choices in the screenshots! Ohhh well.

People mentioned not using mods the steam version. If we can use mods for the steam version, then I guess I'll buy it.

I think you can mod it. You just have to replace the Steam supplied exe with a cracked one, and then re add the game as a non-Steam game.

I'm finally switching over to Windows 7, and I have a quick question for you guys. Can I just copy/paste my steamapps folder from my XP install over to my new Windows 7 install? I can't think of any problems that should arise from this, but I wanted to see if anyone here had successfully done so.

Thanks!

I've never had issues with a kb driving setup. I've been using it for years :lol

But i'm sure for those who want it, controller or steering wheel is probably better.

If GTA 3 or VC come back up again would a gaffer be so kind as to gift me it ?

I have no access to CC or Paypal so i have no way of paying you back.....All I have to give is my gratitude or my firstborn, whichever you prefer :)
