wow Valve.

Just awesome. Enough can't be said about their post release support. This game is 6 years old, correct? It released in 2004 with HL2?

Yeah, the game's got this amazing, breathing, real-feeling game world that sucks you in with everything from characters on the street suffering because of the power struggles of faceless organizations to newspaper summaries that tangentially bring up the conspiracies you're unraveling.

But the story itself is a badly paced run through a web of alliances that ruins who the mysterious conspirators are before the player even gets control of JC Denton. The game's honestly also too long to juggle as many characters as it tries to AND have dramatic tension of any kind. Tracer Tong? Maggie Chow? Paul Denton? Bob Page? Nicolette DuClare? Morgan Everett? Helios? Jaques? Jaime? Agent Simmons? Anna Nevarre? Gunther Herman? These are just the characters I can name off of the top of my head, and all have an interest in what you do at different points in the plot. If it were more episodic in nature it wouldn't be that bad, but most of these characters are recurringly referenced and brought back. The story is a sprawling mess - but it's a mess that informs how the world you're enjoying came to be, and *that* is why people appreciate it.
While I agree with your post, the simple fact that you still remember all those names is a testament to the game being so memorable. Game stories are mostly crap, this one shines in a cesspool in comparison.

Yeah it came out in 2004.The updates sound better then they really are. The motion blur and lighting is barely noticeable. Same with all of the other graphical improvements. The flashlight will be somewhat noticeably improved as well as shadows. The biggest improvement graphically that I noticed is that with all of the improvements together the crosshair is easier to see. I used to have to change the brightness depending on which map I was on, and while I do still have to turn the brightness down for the dust maps, I don't have to adjust the brightness as much. If I wanted I could easily find a happy medium that worked for all maps really.

Multi-core support and I guess other improvements to the engine really stand out. The beta ran very crisply no matter how much I turned up the AA. I used to keep AA at 4x since together with vsync I would see an occasional dip here and there into 40fps. With the beta my fps never dipped even at 8xAA. I never set it to 16xAA but I bet it would have been the same result.

As far as achievements go I could care less about them so someone else will have to comment on those.

I don't think people really care or expect much out of the graphical enhancements compared to the stats, achievements, and so forth. And judging by the CSS page on the front of the Steam store, they aren't really pushing them, either.

I'm just playing on easy for the story, which is supposedly amazing. It doesn't look that bad
Visually it's fine, it's more the controls and gameplay that I wrestled with. It is classic PC stick with it or die trying game.

Anyway I played the first world of Puzzle Dimension (there's 10), firstly it's very reminiscent of Kula World, though it seems to have a more flat design in these early stages. The trailer suggests it goes more crazy later on. The controls are good, the 8 bit soundtrack so far is nothing to rave about, it's just synthy bleeps and bloop kind of soundscapes. If there's 100 levels then I expect it to get significantly more difficcult as was mentioned on the Steam forums.

I'd say if you're into ball rolling puzzlers take the plunge. It's a nice little distraction that you can jump into whenever. Any questions about the game then I'll try my best to answer them. I'm kind of enjoying it a lot. Visually it's pleasing but nothing mind blowing, the talk of music driven visuals aren't apparent yet- maybe they're saving it for later worlds. I'd hope there will be some DLC, if you're hesitant still maybe wait for a demo or sale. I read that they've implemented physics using some advanced engines used on film visual effects but it doesn't really show because the jumps and animations feel very canned. I wonder why they bothered at all really.

Any word on Puzzle Quest 2 on Steam? It's not listed yet.

I'd also like to know. Would prefer it on PC, but if it isn't around by the time I finish Picross 3D, I might need a new DS game and be unable to resist...

Yes, it is coming to Steam and it is a Steamworks title. Namco is publishing it on Steam and I do not believe there is currently a release date for it.

Also, Monkey Island 2 Special Edition: LeChuck’s Revenge is currently being offered for pre-purchase along with the following bonus:

Pre-Purchase Offer

Pre-Purchase Monkey Island™ 2 Special Edition: LeChuck’s Revenge™ now and receive The Secret of Monkey Island™: Special Edition for free!

As others have said...don't do that. Deus Ex is a masterpiece because of its gameplay. The Setting and World are fantastic, but the actual PLOT is pretty thin and jumps around a lot.

Not sure why a pc user would buy Counter Strike Source now.
I wouldn't stand a chance online as a noob against people that live and breathe Counter Strike.

Any idea if you can gift The Secret of Monkey Island™: Special Edition if you already own it (Special Edition 2 bonus)?

I'm sure this joke has been made, but its gonna be surreal to kill someone in CSS and hear "Bun dah na na!". The arrows that show your body parts will be pretty lackluster with just a ragdoll state. <------ Here's...your entire body.

I used to think that too... Then I started playing high and fuck and just rushing with a shotgun... Most of the time they don't anticipate that because everyone have the same tactic. :D Hours of immature fun :lol

Monkey Island 2 Special Edition pre-order is up:

http://store.steampowered.com/app/32469/

Too bad the "bonus" for preordering is the previous game, which I already have.. :(

Pre-Purchase Monkey Island™ 2 Special Edition: LeChuck’s Revenge™ now and receive The Secret of Monkey Island™: Special Edition for free!

I rather have a 10 percent discount, but I believe publishers will do this trend of giving me some other virtual game for free because, that way, they don't lose money on the sale. Oh well.

Edit: Beaten. Oh well, I still have the same complaint. :D

No one really lives and breathes the game anymore. My Pug team that used to live and breathe 1.6 all day everyday don't even play anymore since cal, and CPL died. Even the Source scene is down the toilet for the most part when CGS died.

Anyway, enough about high level play. Source public play is easy man. Just learn the recoil, the maps, and don't spray. Once you learn the fundamentals of this game, it will transfer into any FPS you every play. While source is easier than 1.6, I think it's harder than any game that's out today simply because there's more teamwork involved than lolcod, and a lot more recoil is present. There's other things that create the skill gap, but I won't talk about that.

I think you are really overestimating the level that most of the people who play source now are at.

Perfect time is now. The sale will bring in a wave of new players not making it so bad.

Once I finally got CSS (when it went on sale for like $10 haha) I played a little bit, but the main thing that I had fun doing was just immediately buying the most expensive machine gun (M249? http://www.sfg-clan.net/COD4/weapons/m249saw.jpg), hiding around corners, and then charging in or spraying point blank at people. I wasn't GOOD at it, but when it worked (especially on the unsuspecting better players) it was occasionally hilarious. :lol

I tried playing Mirror's Edge today and was experiencing some massive slowdowns with any scenes involving glass breaking. The game defaulted my settings to High on everything, 4x AA, No V-Sync, 1680x1050, and PhysX on.

I have an ATI 5700 and AMD X4 630. My system should be able to run this. Has anyone else experienced problems with Mirror's Edge on their ATI? Should I try turning PhysX off?

You should never use PhysX unless you have an nVidia card, or it will slow to a crawl doing it in software.

Yup, that's the dumb PhysX crap. Always turn that shit off. It's laughable when you get frame drops when a piece of paper flies around on an ATI card :lol

Phsyx off for sure. It's nvidia tech.
I remember when someone modded an ini file for a PhysX demo to make it look like they had a PhysX card and the framerate went from like 15 to 60. What a shady company.

Thanks for the replies everyone. Looks like I can finally go back and enjoy some Mirror's Edge. Silly that Steam required me to install the PhysX software to install Mirror's Edge =(

Is there some glitch on the steam servers for mac that they're always busy? I've tried over 10 locations right now and it still says it's too busy to download. It can't be this busy.

Edit: Nvm, now it says no content servers have been updated to distribute this game for counterstrike source on mac. Steam on mac still seems like a clusterfuck.

Don't worry, Steam on PC is like that too, except instead of a coherent reason we just get random failures when stuff like TF2 or L4D2 updates. :lol

It's worth it just for the server side mods IMO, stuff like Jail Break, Surf, Death Run, Slide, GG, Zombie Horde, MG, and all the crazy maps people have made. Easily worth the money, even if you never touch the base game.

Oops, I missed Deus Ex. I thought that was on until tomorrow, darn. Well, I still have a PC copy somewhere, and getting an updated CSS on sale is a nice trade-off.

I feel the same way, GTA IV they gave me Vice City which I didn't really want to play. It was just before UK pricing was introduced too so I got screwed on the exchange rate and paid $10 more than I should have. Gonna stop falling for this hook line and sinker from now on.

As everyone is mentioning the mods, I'd like to put it out there that GunGame is probably the easiest way to learn the game, as it focuses for a short time you and your opponents, your opponents to a single weapon.

Got it free with my ATI video card long ago, but it's worth putting into the collection of any PC gamer. Supporting Valve is supporting good!

It's not so bad . . . it is a team game, so you can rely on teammates for help & guidance. Following them helps at times.

I imagine there are a lot of Mac players getting head-shotted today though. :lol
