Steam "Exploration Sale" -- i.e. Autumn Sale -- now live (November 26 - December 2)

Splinter Cell: Blacklist is badass for anyone into stealth. Surprised the hell out of me last year coming after Conviction.

Thinking of buying Crusader Kings 2 for my gf as she's an history buff. I hear the game is pretty good but I was wondering how good/important the DLC are?

I wish you could "pin" a sale price for a 24-hour period. Sometimes I want to think about a game for a bit, do a little research, before deciding to purchase. I missed out on at least a couple games this sale because of that, and thus the studios lost a couple sales also.

Winter sale is riiiiight around the corner. More than enough time for research and to stock up a wishlist.

Yeah, I know. I just think the short deals encourage impulse buys, which is great for Valve I guess, but not always so good for people buying something they don't know much about. I'd even be willing to throw down a dollar or something to "hold" the price for 24 hours until I figure out if I want it.

Some of the dlc is highly recommended by the community.

You can't play with everyone on the map without it.

I can't remember which exactly but the Rome one is good I think. The Muslim one lets you play a lot of people that are normally locked too.

But to be honest there's probabaly enough content without it.

The game is very confusing but once she gets the hang of it she'll be commiting atrocities before breakfast. Killing family members, cheating on your partner, starting wars, assassinating your enemies, torturing their family, incest. So much evil stuff.

Fantastic deal.

Only thing i am missing is

Max Payne 3 Season Pass
Grand Theft Auto IV
Grand Theft Auto: Episodes from Liberty City
Manhunt
L.A. Noire DLC Bundle

I still refuse to buy GTA4 PC. I have already beat it anyway on console.

What were you looking to grab? Other sites might still have stuff going?

Is it me or has this sale been pretty disappointing? Not only the 'exploratory' steam interface but also the low percentage of sale.

Granted the fact that I already own many of the bigger titles may also have contributed to this disappointment.

Frankly I've seen a lot of games I like and I'd buy in a heartbeat.

But I am broke, unemployed and have a huge backlog, so yeah, I'm thinking they'll be 75% off soon or again in the future.

That is straight up the kind of shit she'd be into in an historical game. Base game bought, if she puts some time into it I'll get her some DLC come the winter sale. Thanks for the input!

Haha no problem. Hope she has fun.

Role playing is the best thing for me. You can play to try and take over the world but Im not interested in wars too much. I enjoy the interactions with the hundreds (thousands?) of characters.

That feel when you play as a cheating asshole, who sleeps with his friends wives but is a good leader. Then he dies and you play as his son, who does good to make up for his fathers actions, but he dies during battle. Then you play as his son, whose sole goal in life was to bring the murderer of his cousin to justice. Sadly his life is unfulfilling as the man behind it dies of old age. After going after his family, he turns cold hearted and starts cheating like his grandfather.

Now I want to play again...

This must be a first for me - I haven't bought a single game during this sale.

I should go home and buy something before it ends.

Bought Anno 1404, Grimrock II and Child of Light. Happy with the sale.

There's really not a lot I'm looking forward to in the WInter Sale, which hasn't happened before. The metagame sounds promising though.

Crusader Kings 2 DLC's
.for DLC's which doesn't extend the starting timeline
..the other DLC content is present in the game, but just inaccessible for player to start the game with

The list of DLC's I consider important
.The Old Gods <- gives access to start the game in an older time period and bunch of older factions such as Norse *Mandatory*
.Rajas of India <- access to start in Indian Subcontinent *Mandatory*
.Sons of Abraham <- more content for the three Euro/Arab religions (especially the Jews)
.Legacy of Rome <- Who doesn't want anything related to Rome?
.Sword of Islam <- gives access to start a game as a Muslim character
.Charlemagne <- Haven't checked yet, I just got this blindly..because it sounded cool

Tempted to pick up Planetary Annihilation, even though I'm not quite sure what it is.
I spent a lot of my youth playing Total Annihilation and this new game does a good enough job simulating that nostalgia.

But I just cannot be arsed to delve into a faceless, mechanistic, z-depth RTS any more. It is a micro-managing nightmare.

I just built my PC and got it running a day before this event. My owned games went from something like 4 to 20 or so. I can see sales like this being a huge problem for me. Lol

When does the Winter sale happen?

When does the Winter sale happen?

It should start somewhere around December 20th and run for two weeks. If this was your first sale you haven't seen anything yet. Winter Sale is usually much, much bigger.

Bought my first games of the sale

One Way Heroics
Child of Light
Marlow Briggs
Waves
Retro/Grade
Deft Gravity (9 cent why not)
Port Royale 2
Vegas: Make It Big

Just got home on the last day of the sale - I bought Mini Ninjas and Swords and Sworcery. Should suffice until the Christmas sale.

That feel when all the deals on the main page have 'already in library' :T

we gonna have a "Don't miss these games" thread as well, or that gonna be this thread?

It's kinda like Minesweeper?
Yes, with some Picross. At first it's just giving you the number of adjacent cells to flag, later you'll have the number for an entire column, "they are all connected", "they are not all connected" etc

Very relaxing stuff, though very short. I've only played the first one so far and I 100% it in a little over 2 hours. Sale price seems about right for it.

I can't believe I didn't buy anything. I'm so confused.

Winter sale should change that though. I'm sorely disappointed that I won't be able to play the market with cards again though :( Thanks to steam idlemaster and CS:GO I'm at 194 listings for the year. Steam wants my social security number to sell any more than 200. No thanks.

Fucking sold. I would kill for some Picross on PC.

anybody have any quick recommendations for some good cheap games before the sale ends?

Probably going to pick up the second Hexcells game for a buck, and maybe this other puzzle game called Lyne that Steam users seem to think is pretty good.

I really miss the "small cheap games" thread, these are just some I found on my wishlist.

First of all, only look at the actual expansion DLC. The vast majority of the DLC is either extra songs, portraits or unit visual packs. I like them, but you only wanted the most important stuff.

In general, the expansions are awesome and add a ton of content. In terms of which are the most important though if you only want a few:

Sword of Islam - Important as it adds the ability to play as Muslim rulers
Legacy of Rome - Adds a special new unit type, the Retinue, which is also fairly important
Sunset Invasion - One of the least important, as it adds a fictional invasion by the Aztecs sailing into Europe. Many players (esp new ones) find it too annoying and end up disabling it in many of their playthroughs
The Republic - Minor. Adds the ability to play as republics
The Old Gods - One of the most important, as it extends the starting date back to 867 as well as other Norse-themed features
Sons of Abraham - Minor. Adds Judaism and some religion features
Rajas of India - Another of the most important, since it adds around 50% more of the map to play on
Charlemagne - Allows even earlier starts of the game, as far back as 769 AD, also quite important.

For GTA3 and VC, install the SilentPatch (for a bunch of fixes) and GInput (for modern controller support).

For San Andreas, it's a little trickier thanks to the latest update to the steam version. They removed some tracks from the radio station streams and track lookup and updated the exe to never play the missing tracks. Most mods require the 1.0 exe, but using a 1.0 exe with the new streams and lookup causes the game to crash if it tries to play one of the missing songs. There may be a downgrader that adds the missing music and reverts the exe back to 1.0, but I'm not sure of the legality of such a thing. I have the "Hot Coffee" disk version and I was able to restore from it. The San Andreas SilentPatch works with most versions of the exe, including the new Steam version. It's still in beta though, so there's no GTAGarage link yet and there may be bugs. These were the last 2 updates: http://gtaforums.com/topic/669045-iiivcsaasi-silentpatch/page-84#entry1066581222

If you're going to use a 1.0 exe and data, you will probably want to use this GInput, by a different author, for modern controller support.

Yay PC gaming!

Just wanted to say, thanks to this post, finally Vice City plays with the controls I always remembered. Thank you based oblivion.

Thank you.

I never really played games on my computer but I traded some things in at ebgames and got a $50 steam code. I just upgraded my computer to a gtx 690 and I can't believe how many games I bought for $50. I will definitely buy another steam card for the next sale.
