This should go hand-in-hand, not one or the other.
It should, but I'd still rather a port of something over nothing. Maybe people fix it to run at 60fps. If not the game is more than playable still. I enjoy 60FPS and would like to see it standard, but if they can't for whatever reason then oh well.

.

Dino Crisis on PC in 2020 at 5 FPS.

I wouldn't go that far, 30fps is the bare minimum.

Meanwhile Endless Legend can rock up with a gorgeous art style and great mechanics and sold maybe a tenth of what Civ 6 will sell. I mean look at this map!

I know the strategy genre would be dead without big tentpole releases like Civ, but it'd be a lot healthier and dynamic if people looked beyond Firaxis' latest.

Also, censoring Liberty Leading the People is fucking embarrassing.

A dumb question: Is EL regular turn-based, or simultaneous-turn based like ES?
I've been hearing good things about EL, but I was also rather hopeful about ES, but ended up bouncing off hard due to constantly getting annoyed with the way turns worked in that game.

Steam's public AppDetails API should work. For example with CS:GO...

http://store.steampowered.com/api/appdetails?appids=730&filters=categories

You can look for ID 29 in the code which corresponds with "Steam Trading Cards" or even do a regex parse on the returned bits. There are a few cases where the API doesn't have accurate information (especially with pre-released stuff) but it should be mostly accurate.

Hey thanks a ton, hadn't checked Steams own API in a long while :)

I was talking with a friend yesterday about how dumb Konami is and how they hate money because actually they are too greed in order to spend money to do money.
They have Silent Hill 2-3-4 on PC already done, while 2 and 3 run without problems on modern OS and they still look awesome, while SH needs a bit of work since the resolution options are ancient, but nothing hard.
They have Metal Gear Solid Integral and Metal Gear Solid 2 (even if it's a kinda crappy version of the game): even in those cases, a PC version already exist so they don't need to do a port, just some fixes. And yet they don't release those games dunno why.

Yeah, there's that Suikoden campaign coming but it's not official, so probably nothing will be done.

Same for Sega and Yakuza games, I don't even talk about Shenmue because the fact a HD version is not out yet is just a big fail. Maybe Bluepoint will reveal a proper HD remaster on E3, to double the success of the Shenmue 3 reveal, dunno.

That didn't really answer my question.

I wish I had more time to get into this, as I generally see this as a short sighted point of view.

Companies have more to think about than what you list here, having some games 'almost working,'/doesn't scratch the surface.
They have to tie into marketing and advertising, likely time up the release to hit concurrently with consoles so as not to waste the marketing/media budget, production/shipping development, and even that doesn't scratch the surface of licencing issues.

I do know how it works around here though. If a studio hasn't released anything in two months they're garbage...or they release something you don't like and the goalposts get moved.

I really liked Abigail's room event. Blew my mind. Don't think I've seen many other of her events, though...

Man, I need to play more Stardew Valley.
blew your mind? whats you mean?

Go with Haley, she has the right priorities when it comes to farming.
i kinda like haley cos she's like tsundere and stuff which is kinda fun but she's also really boring in that all she does is take pictures with you

It is good. Just note that zkylon's screenshots are modded with more anime-like portraits, so if that's what's attracting you, be prepared to mod.
some ppl would argue my screenshots are more canon than the game itself

Definitely, I like how her ultimate serves to more strategic purposes than just trying to kill the entire enemy squad. It can be really useful when you're being wrecked by the enemy team in a escort mission, throw it in the middle of the gunfight and force those damn Bastions to step back, and give your team some space to breath. I haven't played enough with any of the other characters to take any conclusions about their abilities, but I suppose there's something similar in every one of them. Still, I've found that using the boosters in addition to the ultimate helps a lot in catching the enemy unguarded, since you can throw the robot armor from farther, saving yourself from it, and whoever be in the range of its explosion will have less time to react.

And honestly I can't even blame Play of the Match for not being able to track things like these, it must be really to measure how useful a play was, tactically wise.
oh yeah boost into ult is exactly how u want to do it, you're basicaly guaranteed to get your mecha back

I totally disagree, it depends from game to game. As SE showed, you can seel ton of copies without marketing at all, stealth-releasing your game and only offering to the customers a simple trailer (FFIX or FFX/X-2 tomorrow).

Some of those games never had a console version, onlyan iOS one, and others only got a PC version recently after years.

Metal Gear Solid and Silent Hills are strong titles and I'm sure they could sell ton of copies with a small amount of work. No need to do marketing, a console version (at least a PS3 one) is already present, so we are in the same situation of FF games.

I understand the difference that 60fps can make in the responsiveness of an action game like Devil May Cry or Bayonetta. Or in a first/third person shooter like Doom or Max Payne. But why does it matter if a nearly decade old turn-based rpg is locked at 30fps?

The Civ Vi reveal is kind of disappointing. At first blush it looks like Age of Empires Online or Civ Rev rather than a proper sequel to Civ V. Really dislike the new art style.

Because that decade old RPG is on PC now, were it's been proven time and time again that locked 30FPS games can be unlocked rather easily in a lot of cases.

It's a decade old console port of a Playstation 2 game. Simply because they might be able to unlock the framerate doesn't mean it doesn't open up a whole series of problems when they do so. Maybe modders will prove it's simple, trivial to do and causes no problems, maybe there's a host of weirdness tied to the framerate.

But again, this doesn't answer my question, can you articulate why 30fps is a problem in an old turn-based rpg.

FF X/X2 'settings'.
Does that mean no option to toggle between Japanese and English Audio?

It looks nicer and plays smoother, and we have hardware that can easily make it run at 60FPS, I'm sure the turn based stuff is fine at 30FPS but there are real time parts that would play more smoothly with a higher framerate. It's not like SE decided they wanted it to be 30FPS, no one developer in their right mind would, it's a technical limitation, which PC doesn't have.

Even the walking animation feels better at 60 FPS or higher. Final Fantasy VIII is a game that had menus running at 60 FPS in the psx because it also feels better to choose options in a menu that is running at higher framerates.

Just because it doesn't need it in order to be playable doesn't mean it wouldn't be a lot better if it was.

Keep in mind Square's business strategies area disaster. Their policies constantly shift and are no where near maximizing revenue. Square's strategies on PC are inexplicable as they are unjustifiable.

FFX HD already had a PS4 release, the PC version is an afterthought for that company, which aligns with the historical precedent.

Look for MGS Complete or Legacy collection to be released on PC/PS4/XBO simultaneously sometime this year or in 2017.

Something to be aware of during these conversations that involve Capcom, Konami, Sega, etc is the console industry is currently experiencing a huge contraction which is set to continue indefinitely. These companies are justified in looking for alternative revenue sources and not being as fully vested in the success.

So expect a small trickle going forward as these ports are unequivocally profitable, but at the quarterly report they are merely a drop in the bucket.

Rewrote some parts of the Monkeybot script just now because it started to bother me a bit as it did some stuff I would never do these days :p You should see 1.0.0. popping up if you have it installed, no new functionality though.

I won a GMG bundle, but the code's not working. :\ I tried refreshing a bunch of times and spamming apply, no dice. Anyone get it working?

It works randomly now since people are spamming the code (its not unique). Just keep trying every once in a while. Its all bundle games though.

That Homefront trailer is really rough. I have no care about any of the characters or plot. I like the lighting during the gunplay and dropping down on the roof, but everything looks so bland. There's negative hype for this game and no preorder sales.

I need my Overwatch fix someone help. *falls over*
we need to make ae support group or something, i can't believe how little interest i have in booting up dark souls 3 again -__-

saddest thing is one of my best friends that just pirates everything except like diablo 3 and i gave him a closed beta key and he was like idk if i'll buy this... this is pretty cool...

he then tells me he tried to play and the beta was over so he bought it thinking he'd get to play it right away only to find it's still locked

ahhhhhhhhhhhh

I miss my grenade launcher, cobber :(

It's funny because I was in the closed beta and I didn't like the game THAT much then. The open beta, and being able to play with friends changed everything.

I've done my Humble contribution (using it for tax deduction next year:)), but since I have the games already, I'll be sharing them all as a giveaway later this evening when I get home. This'll be my first ModBot attempt...hopefully I won't mess it up :)

Chiming in late but the thread title is perfect!

!

Wait, do you know something? The last mention of MGS ports was that Verendus post like two years ago. He mentioned the HD collection and MGS4. But god only knows what transformation Konami has undergone since then.

Then again...this was the same post which mentioned a new Suikoden (lol) and a Xenosaga HD collection (ayy lmao)

We will be judging you harshly if you mess the giveaway up...but we can be bought off in the form of some new PC releases
