Steam Summer Sales Thread: remember: you can actually play after buying

Christ. Another dud day for sales. Just give me Alpha Protocol, Roller Coaster Tycoon 3 Platinum, and Prototype.

This sale is making me realize that I own way too many games on Steam.

So Civilization III is super cheap ($3.34US), but is it a good starter for someone who has never played the series before? Should I just wait to see if Civilization IV goes on sale in the next few days?

Two questions, how do I get to the levels for todays Defense Grid achievement? The, does anyone have an extra copy of Hoard I could buy, I played the demo but did not not complete it fast enough to get in on the daily deal price.

It's still pretty good, but it's definitely dated. I would wait and see if Civ 4 goes on sale, though you really should have hopped on the $11 Civ 5 deal the other day.

Is the war for cybertron more based on the movies or the cartoons? I can't really tell from the screens.
How is the gameplay, though? Gamespot review was pretty harsh. Don't want to waste time trying it if it sucks.

Same doubt here. I'm more interested in the sequel, might as well wait ... no?

Exactly my point, I'm not sure if, amongst all other games, I will be able (and willing) to make time for Torchlight.

Damn it guys, you're selling me on the Transformers game. And I'm not even that big of a fan of transformers.

Someone tell me it's horrible.

It isn't that good. It isn't bad either, but there are far better games to spend your time with if you aren't:

1) A big Transformers cartoon fan

or

2) Have friends to play it co-op

Don't even consider it otherwise. Save your money. Me and two friends played through about 2/3rds of it last summer and we just never got around to finishing it.

Here is what the entire game boils down to:

1) Strafe back and forth and shoot guys while Star Scream and Megatron argue.

2) Flip to car mode and drive to new area where you strafe back and forth to shoot things.

There is almost no variety in the enemies or level design. It is all about hearing the cartoon like voices and playing co-op. As an action game it is fairly mediocre. Competent, but mediocre. There is nothing at all surprising or original in it. It is a standard 3rd person shooter with Transformers laid over the top of it.

People just like it because it is a Transformers game that isn't totally shitty and you can play it co-op. Those are its only real virtues.

The game has a bunch of mods. Anyone know if they drastically improve the game (particularly the difficulty)?

Civ 4 Complete for its $29.99 MSRP is a better value than $11 Civ 5.

And Civ 4 Complete is $20.09 right now. I'd suggest holding off until the last day of the sale to see if it winds up on a daily deal. If not then on that last day spring the $20 for Civ 4 Complete.

Well I pulled the trigger on the assassin's creed pack and dragon age: origins ultimate.

For around ~$30, I'd say that's a great steam sale day for me.

Don't know enough about two worlds 2 or transformers to pull the trigger on those just yet.

Overlord is good for 3 hours but after that the game becomes boring and lame. I don't recommend it to anyone

I totally disagree. I thought it was a ton of fun throughout. And it is almost exactly Pikmin but you have a sword and can fight along side your evil Pikmin. How many Pikmin games are there? It's not exactly an over run genre. This game is highly unique and has a great sense of humor.

Even if you only played it for 3 hours, I guarantee it would be 3 hours worthy of a $1 an hour, which is what that price boils down to.

My only problem with the game is that later in the game it does kind of a crappy job directing you at where to go next. But as long as you are willing to look at an FAQ that isn't that big of a problem.

Speaking of which, Overlord 2 is only $6 and I never played it... Definitely keep an eye on it if it doesn't become a daily sale.

Darksiders won't actually run at all on my Windows 7 64 bit PC, so that's fucking bad. I've tried every single solution listed online, including hex editing the options file to force the game to launch in my screen's resolution the first time it launches, but it just goes to a black screen and doesn't continue.

@EternalGamer You're an angel sent from Based Gabe heaven. Thanks.

I'm skipping Transformers.

Like I said, it isn't a terrible game. But there is far better stuff to spend your time and money on if you aren't a big fan or don't have friends that want to play it co-op.

There are 8 more days of sales, though and I can almost guarantee there will be something in there that will be more worth your cash than Transformers.

Play -> The Awakening -> select level and scroll game type (Story, Practice, etc.) to Out of Bullets. Missions that have OoB: Ancient Research, Out of Fuel, Barrier to Entry, Veil of Ice, Guardian's Fall.

I don't remember if you actually have to unlock missions by playing story mode.

Assassin's Creed 2 for me today, and then all I'm waiting for is Amnesia: The Dark Descent to go on Daily Deals (hopefully) and that's all I plan on buying. I'm on Mac, so there's not a ton of options, which is possibly a good thing, since I'll no doubt save a bunch of money, haha.

You do, which probably makes this a bad game to buy for the point of getting the ticket. Definitely a great game to buy period though :)

Those Out of Bullet levels are really tough.

3 of the 4 days I haven't bought any daily deals so I'm starting to get a little itchy so to speak...I'm actually considering MW2 at $20. I want the game but asking for 1/5 of my remaining budget for it feels too much, at $10 I would have likely bought it without hesitation.

Someone talk me out of a decision I'll likely regret.

I'm a fan of the movies if that counts for anything. But after reading your impressions I'm not gonna go for it.

I already have Majesty 2 and Kingmaker, but none of the other expansions, nor Elven Legacy or Majesty 1.

My brother wants to gift me the Paradox Fantasy Pack - will this still work okay with me already owning parts of it, and Steam will just give me the parts I don't own?

That's odd, works great for me. GPU and drivers?

Just got Torchlight and Kane & Lynch (1+2). Also got SMB earlier even though I have it on XBLA.

Can I get DA to play like the console version?

Actually I found them to be quite easy. Just used Teslas with Temporals and a few Lasers, on some maps I added one Meteor (plus Missiles on maps with aircrafts).

Bought AC2 (just passing on AC1) and DA:Ult. Most damage done to me thus far in the sale.

Also finally got Medium Rare in Super Meat Boy. ... My hand... It hurts ;_;

I'm interested in DA:O and Transformers, but I think I'm gonna pass (For now). If there's anything these Steam sales have taught me, it's that I tend to lose out buying games I don't intend to play right away. They're either usually on sale for cheaper down the road (Oblivion, I'm looking at you) or a better GOTY pack comes out which includes all the DLC (Borderlands, I'm looking at you). I'll wait for now.

Roll on tomorrow.

I assume you've tried this already, but what I had to do a while back to get it to run is to rename one of the video files in the Darksiders folder (I think it was the AMD Logo video) so that the game couldn't find it, and then it started up fine.

Oh shit. I just realized I haven't bought anything yet (mostly due to already owning everything on the daily sales that I'd be interested in).

I think I'll try out this Men of War Assault Squad business. Maybe get Dragon Age Ultimate Edition since I never played any of the DLC, too... I played ACII on the Xbox, but I wouldn't mind owning on the PC for $7...

Decisions!

Men of War: Assault Squad for 9 bucks is a steal. Awesome awesome game. Highly recommended for RTS fans. Has an awesome 8p co-op mode which is a bloody blast to play.
