Stronghold is a TD game in only the loosest sense of the word, but it is a very good game. Just don't expect DG-style gameplay, at all.

The only way you could slip Stronghold into that genre is by saying that your objective is to defend a castle, and castles happen to have towers.

Yeah I've played quite a bit of Stronghold: Crusaders and I never considered it a TD game at all.
