Steam Summer Sales Thread: remember: you can actually play after buying

I bought it when it was the daily and played it for a few hours. I wrote a long-winded impression of it but if you aren't looking for it to be compared to Simcity, it's a good place to start. Performance sucks out the ass though regardless of your PC.

(also the post says it uses Starforce, I fail at typing, I meant SecuROM)

Nice write up, I think I may actually pick this up. The price is great, so even if it doesn't live up to my Sim City 4 expectations it's not a big deal. Shame about the lack of multicore usage. It seems bizarre that a company could release a game, especially one that is presumably CPU intensive, and omit such an essential and commonplace feature of modern cpus.

I've never played Quake before. Sell me on it, but first let me tell you of my phobia:

It might finally be time to go back and investigate DOOM, Quake, Unreal, Hexen, Painkiller, etc.

The thing is , I think I still have a weird phobia of those kinds of shooters left over from when I was little.

Back in the day when those games first came out I was honestly afraid to play them for several reasons:
1) I wasn't used to the idea of a game where you couldn't see behind or around your character, so I was always afraid of something getting the drop on me. Obviously I can get over that now, if not for the other two issues.
2) Most of the enemies in these games were things like monsters and demons which looked genuinely scary to me as a kid.
3) There's something about your health being displayed by an exact number that I found very fatalistic. Having your health display "02" somehow always seemed scarier than just a sliver of a lifebar to me. Your character's face deteriorating in DOOM didn't help.

I wasn't ever able to progress through games like DOOM, Turok, and Duke 3D without cheats. I was never able to actually finish an FPS unassisted until GoldenEye came out. That game did two very helpful things for me: the enemies were all human, and it used a traditional health bar. From that point forward most FPSs on consoles used traditional health bars and had you shoot either humans or aliens - which I can deal with (it's just demons that's the problem).

Recently I was finally able to conquer Duke 3D, but again that was aliens, and I still hate the things that hatch out of the eggs. I still don't know about the other games. A little while ago I tried to play Turok 2 without cheats, and made it through the first level, but had to stop at the graveyards in the second level. Also couldn't do the third level with the big gorilla dudes. I think my problem more than anything is just shooters with mythical or supernatural enemies. I can play Left 4 Dead, even singleplayer, because I know that the zombies are scientific in origin in this game's universe.

Should I really go back and investigate the aforementioned classics if I want more shooters without being stuck with grey war shooters? Has anyone else had this problem? If so, how did you get over it?

I feel you bro. I hate that type of stuff in games too

They're very different games. Company of Heroes is like Dawn of War 1. It's real-time strategy (bases and such), not real-time tactics like Men of War or Dawn of War II.

Okay thanks! I think I'll pass on CoH for now then.

A couple questions:

Is the Rift: CE worth it?

How good is Risen? What kind of RPG is it like?

How can I not suck at Sanctum?

Risen is good, it reminded me alot of the Gothic series. If you haven't played that, the next closest thing would be the Elder Scrolls I guess.

Rift is freakin awesome, but the only reason to get the CE is for the mount you can get at the start of the game and more bag space. It doesn't seem like much for +50% cost.

Fuck yeah!
Whispered World - finally on sale.
Picked up Counter Strike Source also - it's time I got back into that game.
Whispered world is for sale! Think I will wait for a daily before chipping in, but the 6,80€ pricetag looks nice.

The CoH patching problem has only to do with Relic, not Valve.
Nope. The Witcher 2 suffers from the same fate.

So, here's why it's that way:

Company of Heroes keeps ALL sound files inside one big giant compressed file.

So, for instalce, all Speech data is compressed into one single file called WW2AxisSpeechEnglish.sga, which is 500mb. If Relic adds/subtracts any speech from the game, that file will be changed.

A regular patch would just open up that library and then add or remove the changed file, which woudl be just a couple megabytes at best. Steam doesn't patch anything, it just matches files from your installation to the server. Since that library file will now be different (because it has an extra speech file inside it), Steam will just re-download it.

Now, to put that into perspective, OFFullSpeechEnglish.sga (which is another Speech library. Literally a compressed file filled with .wav files) is 1.7 gigabytes. If ANYTHING changes inside that file, Steam will re-download it entirely.

It's not really Relic's Fault. It's not really Steam's fault either. Steam is incompatible with the library aggregation routine used by Relic. Unless Steam supports EVERY SINGLE compression/package engine out there, there's nothing that can be done.

I don't think Steam even has anything remotely similar to that to Steamworks games, so it's not like you can blame relic for not using Steams technology.

I don't see an easy solution for this.

Can you complete Lara Croft and the Guardian of Light by yourself or do you have to co-op it?
You can solo it. You get some of Totec's abilities and they change the puzzles a little. It's more fun in co-op of course, if you can find a partner through friends or GAF or whatever.

CNC3 + KW are great Command and Conquer games. If you like Command and Conquer and haven't played those you should get them.
I love CnC series and I say, that things written above are blasphemy.

Audiosurf and Lara Croft for me today, I hadn't bought anything since Magicka :lol

Is any of the DLC for Lara Croft and the Guardian of the Light worth it? Does the Raziel and Kain character pack have its own story? Reading the description I'm not totally sure...

Also, how long is The Wonderful End of the World? I was going to buy the AaaaaAAaaa+TWEOTW pack during the last day of the sales, but I would like to get the two tickets and it doesn't look like they'll be a daily deal (The same can be said about Poker Night At the Inventory).

I'm kind of overwhelmed by fantasy RPGs now. Would Risen be a waste of money and time if I already have these?

Dragon Age I: Ultimate Edition
Gothic II & III + Forsaken Gods
Neverwinter Nights 2
The Elder Scrolls III & IV
The Witcher 1

Quoting because I'm pretty much in the same boat.

The non-Steam version of Company of Heroes has the same gigantic patches.

Several people have asked in the last 30 minutes and I don't think anyone has answered (maybe no one has played it?): What's the scoop on Cities XL 2011? It's the only daily deal I have my eye on since I recently 100%'d Tropico 3 and need a city sim fix...

The metacritic reviews aren't helping:

http://www.metacritic.com/game/pc/cities-xl-2011/critic-reviews

Decent average, but some reviews complain it is too complicated, while others say it is too streamlined. Several of the reviews or contradictory in other ways too.

EDIT: It is clear that the MC average should be higher than 70, because lots of people whacked the game for being VERY similar to the last Cities XL, which wouldn't be a problem for all of us that didn't play the others...

Didn't know I owned Lara Croft DLC 1 and 2. must have bought it during a sale. oh well. just going to pick up Sanctum since the people i pm'ed don't check PMs o_O

Half-life 1 was $.99 for a day. Does that mean anyone buying it now is getting completely ripped off at $6.60?
I'd say so. They're certainly being silly.

Ultimately, it depends on how much they think HL1 is worth. I certainly don't think it's worth $6.60 anymore, much like Dead Rising 2 isn't worth £15 anymore. At launch, maybe, but retailers sold it for even less so no worry. SF4 is worth even less than £5 now that the revised edition is out, rendering vanilla absolutely near useless unless you just want it for some local play.

If people genuinely think that the games are worth that much money, all power to them and I hope they enjoy their purchases. For myself, I don't think any game that isn't a simulation game or called 'The Sims' is worth more than £20, so that's definitely going to bias some of my views on pricing.

Risen is a better Gothic 3. It's made by the same people. It's a great rpg.

It looks like its CoH, Lara Croft, and Sanctum for me today.

I basically have been gifting my buddy all the games i've been getting that have co-op since he is super new to PC gaming and am trying to build him a nice steam library of fun multiplayer games we can try out. Oh yea I've spent ~30 bucks on him and $20 of it is a gift anything past that, that mofo is paying me back for lol.

Disclaimer: I never played any of the Gothic games.

Risen is a challenging and demanding role playing game that will have you swearing about as much as you'll be using and abusing the quicksave feature. The game doesn't hold your hand, painfully spell out the play mechanics, tell you what to do or where to go. However, once you come to grips with how everything works, you'll find a deeply rewarding role playing game with a harsh and methodical action based combat system and one of the most lush, dense, gorgeous and rewarding worlds to explore.

Risen is a brillaint game, it's one of the better rpgs I've played this generation, up there with the first Witcher and it is also easily the best open world rpg I've played.

Risen is easily worth the price they're asking. Easily.

Edit:
Here are some screenshots I took while playing...

Well, I can always install my retail copy, patch it and use an OF key from Steam then. Then again, patching CoH is a chore regardless of what you do it seems.

How can you say everything after Generals sucked when the existence of Generals was blasphemous and that Tiberian Sun, when it came out, was pretty much one of the worst C&C RTS games (I'm intentionally excluding Renegade in the discussion) ever created?

Nothing for me today, which has been the case the last couple of days.

I just finished CS: Source ticket achievement in less time than I expected it to take (thanks de_dust tunnel). The no movement aspect of it is annoying, as I'm used to moving behind cover between AWP shots and I subconsciously did it a few times, ruining the two kills I had gotten. I was also reminded why I hate Source and 1.6 is superior, the entire match models were just ice skating and stuttering all over the screen.

What time is it?
I'm glad to see Whispered World made it's way to the summer sale. I think I'll wait and see if it becomes a daily deal.

YES!! Finally something i want from this sale!!

Tomb Rider Anniversary! And just for $2.49! sweet!

My sis was nagging me about getting it, now it has finally happened! :D

I would be all over this if I hadn't picked up Dragon Age earlier on. It looks neat. Maybe Christmas.

Yeah, what were they thinking? Maybe that's why Steam added a couple extra. A few of them today seem tough.

If you're lucky can get The Woneful End of the World Acheivement just by finishing the last level, I just replayed the last level and got it and some other people on Steam Forum managed to get it like that as well.
