Steam Summer Sales Thread: remember: you can actually play after buying

Bought Red Faction: Armageddon.

Why? Because quality 3rd person shooters are way too sparse on the PC. FPS titles applenty, but 3rd person not so much. I figure supporting Volition means another 3rd person shooter from them in the future.

Plus, $34 ain't bad for a good game.

Guys, I just played Red Nation for over an hour and feel no remorse. Great game; it's highly underrated. Seemed rough at first, but I really like it.

It's also the most fun I've had getting a ticket so far.

Is there any reason the Total War games bundle (Napoleon and Empire) for $10 isn't a good deal? I enjoy strategy games and used to love Age of Empires to death. Would this be a good enough reason to bail in?
Here was one recommendation from earlier in this thread.

Drek said:
The Empire/Napoleon pair is ok, but nothing to write home about compared to the previous and newest entry in the series in my opinion. Gun based combat makes it a bit more dull in battle, and moving away from the lineage system to a personnel promotion system is unique but doesn't give you quite the same connection as seeing the grandson of your first ruler step in when his father is assassinated/dies in battle before his time and at the tender age of 20 leads your people to a golden age. They added naval battles which are really cool though.

My personal recommendation if you're looking to get into a new Total War game would be either Medieval II or Shogun II. The later of which is a strong candidate for the end of sale recap day (if they do one). It was $30 earlier in the week. The former's Gold edition is on sale all week at $6.69. Both would be a better picking up point than the Empire/Napoleon set.

Unless you really like the time period though. That is the ultimate caveat with all Total War games. If you like a time period especially well you'll likely find yourself preferring that game.

really wondering if i'll like Fallout.
the setting reminds me alot of a Borderlands (but I prefer Borderlands' art style)
Two completely different games though, keep that in mind. Fallout is way more RPG like than Borderlands.

Yeah if you don't like rpg elements but like shooting go for Borderlands, you wont like the others.
Ok, looks like I made the right decision.

Yeah, RF:A makes the wait for Serious Sam: BFE a little less painful. I love the recent arcade shooter revival. Now if only we could get a Vanquish PC port.

Finished The Maw up tonight. That games pretty okay if you play it in chunks.

2.99 for that is a great price.

I would purchase that so hard.

DLing Last Remnant for like 6 hours now...jesus.

I dont know why I keep on tempting to buy Splinter Cell games and Fallout 3. I got Fallout 3 on ps3 and hated it, I have Fallout 3 New Vegas already on steam. I have Splinter Cell Conviction from that 1 dollar ubisoft mixup but should I get a different one?

Why do you do this to me Steam? :\

I'd kill for those speeds. My internet caps out at 300kb/s max.

I got Beat Hazard, and it's awesome, but how do I set it to only play my songs? I selected my playlist folder but the stupid default songs are still mixed in. I only want to play my own music.

There should be an option to browse your music folders.

Edit: The Show Folders option after selecting a mode lets you navigate to your music folders. I also recommend indexing the folders so you can load faster, and if you play with randoms, might be able to play something other than the "on disc" songs.

For as much as I pay for Comcast, and for as shitty as their service is, I better be the fucking Queen of England.

Sadly, it isn't, and it frequently goes slow or drops entirely. I consider it generous that I was getting that high at the time. Even more unfortunately, there's no other ISP I can pick being out in the countryside.

Yes, mine got resolved. I emailed support and went to bed. Next morning I had an email back from them telling me to delete everything in the Steam folder except for the Steam.exe and steamapps (where the games are stored.)

I did follow their directions, and after starting Steam (you have to do email verification again) I was able to buy things.

However, I don't think that was what fixed my account because I was also unable to buy anything on the Steam website and I can't see how a messed up client would have any effect on the website. I imagine my account was flagged for something and they unflagged it, or whatever the issue was just went away by itself with some time.
Yeah, that's what I don't get. You can buy stuff without Steam open, just by doing it on the website. I made all my purchases on the website, so why would an outdated .dll suddenly block me? I absolutely believe they either flag/unflag accounts or there's something wrong on their end.

My friend and I have been doing all the tickets, and his Galcon achievement glitched and won't unlock. He has won over 30 games with no luck, but has unlocked all the progression achievements for Billiards multiplayer. Has anyone else had trouble with that one? I would be pissed to be stuck on 66 right now like him. I can't even imagine the rage after the effort involved. On another note, I'm secretly hoping ticket earners get access to the DOTA 2 beta. Farfetched perhaps, but my secret hope.

Just beat the main campaign of Recettear... and I can't wait to keep playing. Awesome game, thanks for the recommendations, I would have never picked it up without them.

If this game shows up again on the final day, BUY IT.

Fuck that last payoff. Had me sweating up til the last 2 hour changes... and then my treasures started to sell and it all came together. :)

I'd probably go with Borderlands too. Larger focus on guns probably puts it ahead of the others. So many toys to play with...

No way, you guys are crazy. I like Borderlands a lot in Co-Op, but that is really what makes the entire experience. And it can't be played like a normal shooter because you will go crazy at how much damage the enemies take to kill (at least at first until you adjust).

Mass Effect 2 plays a like a cover shooter. it's a cover shooter with an amazing story. He should definitely play it before Borderlands.

I'm stuck with AT&T and can't even get their uVerse service.

holy screen tearing Last Remnant....any way to force v-sync? I didn't see it in the options. Pretty unbearable for me.

D3Doverrider fixed it for me (ATI owner), if you have an Nvidia card you might be able to force it on the driver or there is an ini fix.

So I started playing Splinter Cell: Conviction after seeing my Total War package download speed slow to a crawl.

Holy shit! It is a very well polished game. It's like playing Ass Creed with guns? Ok not really, but the takedowns are amazing and make me feel like a badass. At least, that is until the enemies I'm hunting start taunting me because I killed a couple of guys and then went back into hiding. I wish Alpha Brotocol had the gunplay system that Conviction had actually. I would have enjoyed it a whole lot more and actually played it through. Doesn't hurt that the graphics are pretty good too.

I guess the one thing I would change is the whole "black and white is stealth, color is bad" mode. It's getting kind of lame to play 90% of the game in black and white. I like the "melee takedown == free marked time warp" kills mechanic though, gives a nice little minigame/strategy aspect for the kill order that you apply on a map/level.

PS: Now my downloads have completely stopped. 0kb/s. Time to go hunting for a new server location I guess.

Anyone tried The Last Remnant? I'm highly interested, I played the Xbox360 version back then and its load of glitches and pop-ups were a total turn-off, not that I'm a graphic whore, but this was so intense and so obviously unfinished, it didn't took long after I got bored watching these and leaved the game be, forever after.

I knew, after that, that a PC version was released but I never saw it on shelves and the original price on STEAM is quite high imo.

Are most of these fixed for the pc version? 10$ is a steal, I know. Still, I want to put my money in the right place.

Thanks a lot! I'll buy it right now, the game was good overall but all those glitches were ruining the experience. It's a great thing they fixed all of these.

Thanks again! :D

Because you seem to know a lot about this game and playing you own songs, do you know why some of my songs are completely mistitled ingame? It will literally title one of my songs as one of my other songs, even though a quick look in windows explorer shows that the file is correctly named.

Just bought both Mafias as well. A good friend swears by the original, figured I'd just grab the sequel while I was at it.

I'm really regretting not getting Frozen Synapse and Wings of Prey now though. :( Oh well, next sale.

So I just loaded up King's Bounty: Armored Princess (and I think Crosswinds because I bought that as well) and I am having a major problem.

When the introduction video plays I have audio but no video. Once I get past that either by letting it play or by clicking I can see the main menu screen with the choice of what campaign to play and what not. Once I start the campaign though again no dice. The introductory cut scene is black and once the game loads I can see all of the UI (minimap, bottom bar) except the main screen is black.

But if I select a building or whatever and a different screen is brought up I can see that. This is really frustrating as I was looking forward to trying this game out some tonight. Any body have any idea what I can do to fix it?
