It's not clever. It's not funny. It's a stupid trend that's been getting worse and worse on this board.

Shit like this:
That was really
not
good!
Isn't clever. Isn't funny. It is a '90s "NOT!" joke in internet form. It just makes you look like a jackass.

Spoiler tagging an entire sentence that contains important information to the context of your post and possibly changes the entire meaning is just plain stupid. Like this:
That was really good!

Just kidding, it actually really sucked.
If you do this shit? Fuck you.

Beyond the inconvenience of slowing down my thread reading by forcing me to highlight your stupid inane remark, there's the fact that there is absolutely no way to know if what's in that black box is a shitty joke or a spoiler. I have been spoiled by highlighting a spoiler tag expecting a shitty joke, and I know I'm not the only one.

Spoiler tags are for spoilers. It's in the fucking name.

If you want to make a side remark, we have punctuation for that. (They're called parentheses.)

If you absolutely have to use some sort of editing on your text for this shit, try using [ strike ]. See? Look at how you can still read this text, but it's clearly more of an aside than part of the main content of the post.

Oh, and using excessive spoiler tags in this thread? Also not clever.

But spoiler tags are integral to regulating the comedic timing of one's posts.

It only really gets bad if it is in a thread that lots of actual spoilers in it that could get confused for snarky non-spoilers.

It isn't something that happens only here, it's the internet.
wherever there's a spoiler tag then there are people who uses it not in the proper way.

Didn't a mod have something to say about this previously? That said, I like using them to often juxtapose what the non-spoiled text says. Also makes my quips look more witty.

Kevin, I like you and I acknowledge some merit to your position, but i disagree and will continue to use the spoiler system in the methods described.

okay fine

If you can't be funny without using spoiler tags to hide certain parts of your post, then you're not funny and shouldn't be trying to make jokes anyway.

I sometimes use spoiler tags to differentiate two levels of interpretation. E.g., a phrase that's optimistic unspoilered, somewhat more cynical when the spoilers are highlighted. It's a method of encoding information, not a mechanism for "not" jokes. Sorry we aren't using the tag as you, KevinCow, think we should be using it.

I use strike for "I'm editing a post to update my thoughts, but I'm not going to pretend I didn't say this before, just that I have a different perspective now, or don't wish to continue receiving replies on the matter." Or to mark a time-limited event is over.

I've seen it used for joke half-finished comments, but as a full aside, it looks wrong to me.

You have to know that making a thread about this is only going to have the opposite effect right?

Is that your plan? You secretly love spoiler tags?

There are certain forms of jokes that spoiler tags are suited to.

You don't think it's funny, okay. Some people do.

It's only slightly annoying if you're on an iPad or something where you have to copy the spoiler and paste it into the notepad to see what it says. Is there an easier way to see spoilers on an iPad? I still don't mind...if you can't click and move your mouse over a spoiler without it agitating you then you need to chill.

By the way, KevinCow, if you hate spoiler tags so much, you can always use Opera, where they don't work properly by default.
