Stray has smashed Annapurna’s record for concurrent Steam players

I watched a few hours on a stream, and it feels like the game starts as The Cat of Us with all the nice 'destroyed beauty' visual design, then jumps into a completely different game at the start of the sewer section.

Mechanically speaking you spend a lot of time doing things that a human protagonist would do, with the cat movement and meow button acting as a layer on top for flavour. I get the impression that it was designed cat-last rather than cat-first in that sense.

It's not always guaranteed. There is another high-profile indie launching on Steam today called As Dusk Falls and it's not looking good. Both are free on a sub (PS+ and GP) and they had about the same amount of promo (2 showcase trailers).

The peak is 152 for As Dusk Falls.

Stray is 62 963 😲
In fairness, Stray has a gigantic banner all over the front page, while As Dusk Falls is nowhere in sight.

I'm not saying Steam is a goldmine, but rather that it's easy for Annapurna to break records given that they've been too busy competing elsewhere to set any. That part is non-news anyway, the success story is the actual point of interest.

Making your money off paying customers is worth far more then collecting a check from a corporation, while nobody buys your game.

Thosevwho really wanted to play the hame brought it, while those stubborn Steam fanatics aren't hurting anyone except themselves.

Maybe that one isn't bad either, the reviews are rather positive, but it just looked terrible, the jarring art style, pushing way too hard at being this big drama in the trailers. Since I like all sorts of interactive drama (Erica and Virginia was okay, really liked Last Stop, especially that Annapurna game should get more buzz imho) I might get to it, but realistically this won't make it on my list anytime soon, if ever.
And then you have a game with a cat which is the most important ingredient of their daily internet for some people. So is a much easier sell.
Spirit of the North looks kind of similar, okay just another cute animal in a totally different setting, but wonder if that also does well with the PS+ exposition. I will try that too if I ever get a hand on a PS5, since they had to include only its version.

By “Steam fanatics” you mean PC gamers that don’t support a big multibillion dollar corporation rolling in and doing the paid exclusivity horseshit.

Personally I’d never even heard of As Dusk Falls until a few posters mentioned it. I had to look it up, while Stray has been in the spotlight a bit.

Game Pass also had a recent $1 promo deal so, no point in buying it.

This is an awkward comparison though right?. Doesn't As Dusk Falls have very limited actual gameplay. It strikes me as very niche (and not really anything I'm interested in) so who is surprised that it's far behind? Honestly not sure who the As Dusk Falls market is but I guess they really wanted to make that game

Yes, exactly those. While other normal, mentally sane people will get the game regardless where it's gonna download from.
Some people also have a spine and stick to their principles even if it comes at a cost for themselves. Not cool nowaydays, limiting your own freedom for anything, but they still exist and probably notice those "sane people" as opportunists who ruin everything.

I bought the game yesterday on steam and I'm enjoying it quite a lot, I paid the equivalent of 12 dollars in my local currency. The game is gorgeous at 4k.

Played with my daughter for a couple of hours and we love it. Doesn't feel or look like an indie game at all.

well, i beat it, and it's a good game....no amount of time in the future will make me think otherwise.

Instead of the shitty attitude, give it a shot if you have PS Plus Extra
How long did it take and is there any more you can do once you 'beat' it?

Nice. I only played its first half an hour or so and looks cool. Love the idea of playing as a cat in a sci-fi setting and the visuals are great.

? One game features an adorable cat with gameplay. The other is motion comic. It's easy to see why one is more successful. Surely you jest.
Yeah a little but no denying people only know about Stray because of the sony ps5 showcase. If it was nestle in something like Future Game Show it wont even make a dent.

It's more open a bit further.

I watched multiple minute long clips from multiple points in the game... and all I see is pseudo puzzles driven by avoiding enemies with context sensitive platforming...

seems extremely simple and dull
