Another RSD where nothing is sticking out. At least not enough to get me to get out of bed and in stores on time.

yeah, i love Dilla & Cash but dont know about those releases....might go looking anyway, prolly catch something odd like Matthew Sweet

Vinyl Collective forum said something about Bohren and Der Club of Gore having 2 albums for RSD, but I don't see them listed anywhere.

Have you checked to see if your record is warped? If not then there might just be micro-dust caught in the grooves that's causing a skip, something easily treatable, but barely noticeable until you listen to it.

As for cleaning needles there's a few ways out there, I'll go in order of price:

[URL="http://www.amazon.com/dp/B004D42H5K/?tag=neogaf0e-20"]Mr. Clean Magic Eraser Cleaning Pads[/URL]
Some people rely on these for all sorts of vinyl care (I do not though, but there are quite a few online who believe in these things). Just drop the needle onto a pad and immediately lift it up with the tone arm lever. you don't brush the needle with these things, the pad should pick up whatever gunk or dust is on the needle, if any.

[IMG]http://i.imgur.com/dC17keg.jpg[IMG]

[URL="https://www.gcaudio.com/cgi-bin/store/showProduct.cgi?id=30"]Mobile Fidelity #9 Stylus Cleaning Fluid[/URL]
I've heard good stuff about this one, but haven't tried it myself. Probably gets the job done and if its from a company like MFSL, then you're getting good products because they generally know what they're talking about.

[IMG]http://i.imgur.com/WKJeVXRl.jpg[IMG]

[URL="http://www.amazon.com/dp/B00ERPWAK2/?tag=neogaf0e-20"]ZERODUST ONZOW STYLUS TIP CLEANER[/URL]
Now this is the real deal. I've used it twice now and really like this stuff. It's a proprietary gunk that like the magic pad you drop the needle into and immediately lift up. Then you stir it around the the dust or gunk falls to the bottom. Works great and lasts for YEARS.

As for cleaning records themselves...

[URL="http://www.amazon.com/dp/B004D42H5K/?tag=neogaf0e-20"]Mr. Clean Magic Eraser Cleaning Pads[/URL]
I've actually tried this on a junky record with no attachment to and the results weren't stellar, but it sorta did ok? I dunno, proceed with caution, try it on a dime record and see if you like the results.

[URL="http://www.amazon.com/dp/B000M9H03E/?tag=neogaf0e-20"]Mobile Fidelity: Record Cleaning Brush[/URL]
This is my favorite dry cleaner. Picks up any surface dust, paper or dirt. While it's not a thorough cleaning it gets the job done for newer records or records that have been previously water cleaned.

[IMG]http://i.imgur.com/bISemtA.jpg[IMG]
[URL="http://www.amazon.com/dp/B004MG9YYQ/?tag=neogaf0e-20"]In The Groove Record Cleaner[/URL]
Have never tried them myself, but some people swear by the results. I'm paranoid about any sticky texture being applied to my vinyl though.

[URL="http://www.amazon.com/dp/B001A9ST2G/?tag=neogaf0e-20"]Hunt: EDA Mark 6 Carbon Fiber Record Brush[/URL]
Something else people often swear by is a Carbon Fiber Brush. Not my cup of tea, but I think there's a huge amount of record collectors that love these things.

[IMG]http://i.imgur.com/8cJMRT7.jpg[IMG]
[URL="http://www.amazon.com/dp/B002UKSZUU/?tag=neogaf0e-20"]SPIN-CLEAN[/URL]
This is my favorite deep clean, wet vinyl care system. I've had one for almost a year and have gone through my collection extensively cleaning and replacing the inner sleeves on everything with non-paper sleeves. Easily recommended if you imagine yourself really getting deep. Otherwise it's a big price to chew if you're just starting. The solution included, if used properly will clean 50 records a session, so you'd need some investment before buying into this.

[IMG]http://i.imgur.com/mr8aAdb.jpg[IMG]
[URL="http://www.nittygrittyinc.com/1.0_2.0.htm"]Nitty Gritty 2.0[/URL]
This is my dream. Couple this with the Spin Clean, you'd get the one two combo of a water clean plus a vaccuum to really get those records back to their glory. Nothing will fix scratches or dents, but this is damn well near perfect.[/QUOTE]

Woah! Thanks!

I'll look into that. Meanwhile I think I located my problem - seems like I can't adjust the weight or friction of the needle on my player. With a tiny bit more weight, the record plays just fine. Seems like I'll have to get a new player somewhere down the road.

Put a coin or two on top of the cartridge and adjust accordingly

Yep, did that. It's been a case of finding stuff on the internet ranging from: 'It works just fine' to - 'Are you nuts? You'll destroy your records in no time doing that'... Adding 1 Cent did it though and I don't think that kind of weight is fundamentally different to adjusting the weight of the cartridge...

One other record cleaning method is Titebond II wood glue. Probably best to find a youtube video, but you basically put a thin layer on the record (avoid the label), let it dry and peel. It pulls all the crap out of the grooves and doesn't harm the vinyl. Great for especially mouldy records.

I've done about 600 records with this. You can even take the glue sheet, and play it (backwards)

Highly tempted but shipping rates to UK are :(

Edit: fuck it. Went for it.

Yeah I passed on one of my favorite albums because of exchange and shipping rates once. I think total it would be have been 50 bucks for it. Then they sold out and look for on discogs and it was 150.

Unless I know a distro will have it, I just drop the money for it. Fuck it.

And then the LORD David Bowie saith to his Son, Jonny Depp: 'Go, and spread my image amongst the cosmos. For every living thing is in anguish and only the LIGHT shall give them reprieve.'
Looks like ChangesOneBowie is getting rereleased, with half of the supply randomly being put on clear vinyl. If it's an actual remaster, I might take my chances.

I'm poor, guys.

Yay updates. Some of this is actually old. the VMP stuff but anyway

Morbid Saint - Destruction System.

Since I'm too lame to take my own glow picture, this is what the record and one of the posters would look like while glowing.

Death Grips - The Money Store. Black LP

Nils Frahm - Spaces (Vinyl Me Please)

Nada Surf - High/Low (Vinyl Me Please)

Well, I'm in a spot right now.

I went a little overboard for a long while. I'm a really big sucker for OG pressings of albums I love. I blame it on the rush of finding Big Star's first record, Promo Copy OG pressing, in a thrift store.

So, I splurged on a copy of Loveless by My Bloody Valentine, and said, "That's the last big one for the time being."

And now I see on Facebook that my local record store just got in an OG mono version of Blue Cheer's first album. I'm stuck in a total loop of will I / won't I.

You'd think that listening to any of the hundreds of great records I already have would help but you know it doesn't work like that.

Can anyone recommend some good (cheap) interconnects? The ones that came with my table are really bad

If you have a soldering iron and some time, you can make some custom length interconnects for very cheap. I think I used some Silver Bullet RCA's and some wiring i bought from Parts Express for less than $20. If not, Blue Jeans Cable work well.

What pressing was it? Really want this album, but I've heard awful things about the Plain Records pressing.

It's the Plain Records repress, not the OG.

A large part of why it gets such a negative connotation is that Kevin Shields himself said that it was pressed off of a CD version, not the master recording. But that's been questioned since they were licensed by Warner Bros against his will to do a vinyl repress (the only official repress) that he didn't want them to do.

I've heard it on CD, digitally, and now on vinyl, and I can safely say that this doesn't sound like a pressing based on a CD recording. I've heard a few that were and they clearly sound like it. That said, I don't have the original to compare it to.

The price was fair and wasn't really as much of a splurge as I made it out to be. It was more like the last nail in a series of them.

I do think that Plain Recordings gets more criticized than they should because of those Kevin Shields comments which led a lot to believe that they source all their records from CDs. Their reissue of Julee Cruise's Into the Night sounds phenomenal and I'm pretty happy with the Elliott Smith XO reissue (I've heard the original BongLoad pressing is terrible). That's not to say that they don't have some bad reissues, but I think a lot of the people who don't buy Plain records or criticize them do it because they heard that they source from CDs from Kevin Shields, whose comments seemed bitterly made because he didn't want anyone else to reissue his albums without his consent.

I think Kevin announced a couple years back that he was working on all analog vinyl reissues of the MBV discography, so I'm just waiting for those to happen... however long that may be.

Probably not a big deal for most people, but Sia's Colour the Small One will be released on vinyl for the first time on April 1st. Really a great album.

I have no frame of reference but would this be a good starting point for someone looking to dip their toes into vinyl? Is it a big deal that the auto-return mechanism doesn't work? If so, any good recommendations for a phono preamp to go with it that isn't too expensive and gives a good bang/buck?

I can't quite get myself to jump straight into something like a Pro‑Ject Debut Carbon but it seems like a waste to start with a cheap "brand-new" low end Sony or Audio-Technica that Best Buy or Amazon carry. Thanks!

The cartridge costs more than that new, so yeah, that's a pretty good deal.

Milan and da gawd Nicolas Winding Refn bringing this sweetness back from the grave-

Releases April 8th. Don't care so much for the dye job but I just want those sweet sweet synth tunes in my player, and of course the main theme. The last two NWR releases I bought were Oldboy and Robocop, both were superb so I expect the same.

I'm poor, guys.
Spanning Mingus to Tupelo in a single haul? Fucking worth it.

The Explosions in the Sky - The Wilderness Indie Exclusive Opaque Red & White set is really, really well put together. Feels like you got your $23 worth. No chance to listen yet, but the packaging is just fantastic.

Since I got the Transistor vinyl soundtrack, I've been looking into getting a setup to play it and other albums I'll be getting in the future. I popped into Richer Sounds today to see what sort of setup I could get, and after a pretty good chat with one of the staff there, I got the following recommendation: A Teac TN100 turntable and an Onkyo A-9010 amp. It'd be £350 for the pair at that shop, which is about what I'd like to spend on a set.

Would that be a good setup to get?

I dunno, for £350 I think I'd recommend just going for a slightly higher end direct drive player, as long as you have active speakers.

Why would you want a direct drive though? and how would active speakers relate to the decks?
I run all my stuff through actives/1210s/mixer but thats because I DJ(try)

I dunno, I would just generally suggest a direct drive for a first player since there are fewer things that can go wrong with them right off the bat. I certainly wouldn't get a cheap belt-driven player (although I dunno if the TN100 has a good rep, it might).

Basically I just think that budget would be better spent getting one mid-high range thing than getting two low-end things, if that makes sense.

The next Third Man Record's Vault Package was announced. This concert was live streamed at the time and I can attest, it was great. If you're into White Stripes/Jack White at all, I recommend this one to pick up:

Burial - revised editions of 'Burial' and 'Untrue' (contains tracks which were previously only available on CD editions)

img_27619lpjn.jpg

How is Untrue laid out? The original version is really frustrating as a 2xLP, lots of wasted space.

Same running order as original CD release.

Original pressing:

Code:
A1	Archangel
A2	Near Dark

B1	Homeless
B2	Shell Of Light

C1	Raver
C2	Etched Headplate

D1	Untrue
D2	UK
D3	Endorphin

Revised edition:

Code:
A1	Untitled
A2	Archangel
A3	Near Dark
A4	Ghost Hardware

B1	Endorphin
B2	Etched Headplate
B3	In Mcdonalds

C1	Untrue
C2	Shell Of Light
C3	Dog Shelter

D1	Homeless
D2	UK
D3	Raver

Untrue will be one of those 'pivotal' music moments when I describe the history of my own evolving musical appreciation. It'll probably sit alongside Yankee Hotel Foxtrot and Kid A in my timeline.

That's so much better! The original felt like the most unnecessary 2LP release ever.

Some more Ulver. Got the reissues of Bergtatt, Kveldssanger and Nattens Madrigal. All purple which is why just one picture of the LP. And I think it was Kveldssanger that came with sheet music. The others were lyrics.

was taking room pics for gaming side, thought i'd get my vinyl corner - pretty crazy after a big DJ friend out here went digital a while back & donated the bulk of his collection, haha. much of the bottom 2 rows are my queue i've been sorting through to decide what to keep; mostly hip hop/R&B singles, and a small reggae section there. still, pretty happy!
