Stuck in the Past - a 33 RPM thread for vinyl listeners and collectors

I'm looking to start vinyl collecting, so yeah what's a good non-ridiculously priced player?

second hand technics/marantz/dual or any other vintage hi-fi record player from the flea market. If you it looks old but you don't know if it's any good, lift it up. If it weights a ton it most likely is good.

Are there any features one should look for in a good player? I don't know much about it even though I've kind of casually built up a decent collection. I've just picked up any direct drive cheap player I've come by. I thought I've seen references to different types of needles or something?

You'll have to replace the needle since you can't know what condition it's in. It will likely be worn out and a worn-out needle can damage your records.

I don't know about different types of needles, just make sure it's a new one.

So, I got a new needle for my old old turntable, but when I plug it on my DJ mixtable phono-ready (of course) it makes a loud hum and makes the songs almost unlistenable. Is there some fix for this issue? I'm sure someone can help.

The turntable has been in the attic for years.

Ground the turntable by putting the ground wire to your mixer or just tie it around some metallic stuff.

What wire should I put to the mixer?

There should be a thin cable coming out of the turntable, if not, ground it by yourself by taking some metallic wire and attaching it to the frame of the turntable

The wire could be looking something like this:

what kind of turntable is it?

Recently found this kinda rare boxset in a local store:

hIu5j.jpg

It contains the entire discography of the Spanish singer Enrique Bunbury. Pretty exciting since I'm a fan and more than half of these records will never be released on vinyl separately outside of this boxset.

It's an old Rising, japanese turntable. I noticed that, when I touch the cartridge, it makes an even louder noise.

Tried doing that with a cable I had here, but I couldn't find the energy source through the frame of the turntable. What could I do?

I'm sorry about the extremely shitty picture and instagram filters, but I picked up these two recently:

Hail to the Thief - Radiohead
Valtari - Sigur Ros

Valtari is the first Sigur Ros album I've gotten on vinyl, and it's just absolutely wonderful. I really need to pick up the rest. I also ordered two more records today, so I'll post those when they come in a week!

I also have a new turntable.

Pro-Ject RM 10.1 with a Dynavector 20X2 cart.

Very nice. What made you decide on the Dynavector?

Also, I'm sure you've posted this before, but what speakers do you have? Is it just a 2 channel setup?

I'm wrestling with what to buy for a major home theater/listening room upgrade right now. I really want to do both HT and a 2-channel setup in the same system, probably with a home theater bypass, but can't decide on equipment.

Thanks. No elaborate reason on choosing the Dynavector other than it is a great cart and performs well.

It's a 2 channel setup. Speakers are Sonus Faber Cremona M.

Holy shit this came fast. Ordered it on Monday, shipped yesterday, and got here today. Don't you just love it when you pick the cheapest shipping option available and still get your stuff fast?

Undersea - The Antlers
Wow the color of this vinyl is beautiful. It's a sort of transparent bluish teal, and it looks amazing. The sound and overall package is just great. The Antlers have been one of my favorite bands since Hospice came out, and I adore the direction they've gone with this EP. They nailed the concept down perfectly.

I also have Turn on the Bright Lights by Interpol coming in by the end of this week.

Love that EP, especially the track Crest. The vinyl colour looks amazing. Where did you order it from?

I love the EP as well. Zelda is my personal favorite from it. I think it's one of the best song they've ever made. It really does. Think it's the best "looking" vinyl I own. I ordered it from Anti-records' shop (http://kingsroadmerch.com/anti-records/) but it seems like you can get it from amazon or insound as well. It looks like it's a black vinyl on the shop, but I believe all the copies are colored. Oh, and I forgot to mention, but it's a different color in Europe! Looks pretty bad in comparison, but if possible you can import it.

Here's what the European pressing looks like: http://i.imgur.com/lwFWr.jpg I really dislike it considering how great the other one looks.

Thanks for the quick reply man. Shipping is around $15 on that site, so all things considered not that bad. Too bad that the exchange rate on the Euro is kind of shitty these days. Not sure how I feel about paying €25 for a 4 track EP. Though the colour is definitely amazing.

Just checked out some Dutch online shops and they have it listed as 7" instead of a 12". Weird.

No problem. We should just use pm's instead of taking over the thread sometimes haha. That's high, but I agree it's not too bad since it's international. That's definitely a lot for an EP, but truth be told, I think it might be worth it. It's personally one of my favorite releases this year, and that color is to die for. It comes with a cd too, so I guess that's nice?

That is weird! As far as I know, it's a 12' in Europe as well. It does play at 45 rpm, though! I've been messing around and playing it at 33 and it sounds really awesome too.

So I'm thinking of buying a Pro-Ject Debut III turntable with my next paycheck... That's a good first "expensive" turn table. At least from a hand me down Sony PS-T3?

And then the LORD David Bowie saith to his Son, Jonny Depp: 'Go, and spread my image amongst the cosmos. For every living thing is in anguish and only the LIGHT shall give them reprieve.'
Iggy Pop - The Idiot
John Cale - Paris 1919
Neutral Milk Hotel - In the Aeroplane Over the Sea
Ramones s/t
Is that Paris 1919 a reissue, or the original run?

One album i'd love to have is a reissued vinyl of is his live album, Sabotage. I think the rights to that album are messed up though, you can't even find it on CD in america.

my three pick ups from last night
Wenis, how much did you pay for that Rauchenberg??

Very nice! That James Blake album is quite possibly the best sounding vinyl I have in my possession. Your list makes me realize that I need to buy up all Grizzly Bear vinyls.

sounds incredible. The first time I've heard a dbx encoded record.

The noise floor is crazy low, and the dynamics are insane. There's a warning in the decoder user manual to keep the volume low until the music starts, as you don't get any background rumble/noise that normally indicates the needle is in the groove. The music on the disc isn't really to my taste, but as a demonstration of what it can do it's great.

There's quite a few pop/rock albums that have dbx versions, and I'll have to see if I can hunt them down.

Just bought my first turntable (Pro-ject Debut 3). I've been wanting one for ages.

I'm looking for a good tutorial on how to setup this thing, as i don't expect it to be a plug & play kind of hardware.

Cartridge alignment? Tonearm Calibration?

Finally got the balls to pick up some of my favorite records from the past year(s).

Sharon's record is my fav. 2012 album...she managed to beat Fiona Apple just so you people out there get some perspective on how amazing TRAMP is.

...i'm seeing her live in Boston in November...oh boy.

is the St. Vincent + David Byrne album any good?

How do you guys remove static? Before or after cleaning the record with solution?

I don't use any solutions, just record brush.

I just re-alphabetized my 7"'s after messing them around with DJ-gigs for weeks. Took me like 2 hours. I got too many records. Or need to alphabetize them after every gig. Or just let them be in whatever order.
