Stuck in the Past - a 33 RPM thread for vinyl listeners and collectors

Just superb! I haven't heard one myself, but that clearaudio table is extremely well regarded, must sound great.

Have you thought about seperate stands for the speakers? Placing them farther apart ought to yield a much wider and more enveloping soundstage.

Also, please, where did you get that lovely piece of furniture your turntable & amp are sitting on?
Thanks! The clearaudio is a lovely piece of eqiupment. I intend to upgrade the cartridge soon. And I do not intend to buy speaker stands anytime as i prefer the simple and minimal look and will sacrifice slight performance. I actually moved both the speakers to the bottom shelve now.

There is a local carpenter that builds custom reclaimed wood furniture. I gave him a concept and he made modifications, and we came up with this table.

What cartridge are you using now? I'm using a denon 110, which I'm very pleased with, but I have only compared it to two other cartridges.

I do not much like the look of speaker stands myself. I use floorstanders since they take up the same amount of space as monitors + stands, not exactly a minimalist choice, tho.

A sensible choice. I might have to look into doing the same once I have a better room for my hi fi. Was the cost reasonable?

I am uncertain as to what cartridge i will be using; I am sure, i will shoot you a message for some suggestions. i am currently using the clearaudio mm cartridge that came with the TT.

I found my carpenter through yelp. i searched reclaimed wood furniture and found one with great reviews. The table cost approximately $900.

I HAVE NO IDEA HOW TO SET THIS THING UP!

I'm trying to figure out how to balance the arm and I'm thinking I'm missing parts. Agh! The instructions are talking about parts that I don't have!

Phono stage pre-amp. Or if your turntable is hooked up to a receiver and has a Phono line, then you can connect it there too. I'd recommend a separate phono stage pre-amp though.
Well I am connecting it to a receiver with photo lines. It's terrible quiet though, even when the volume is at max. Looks like I need a pre-amp.

hey i have that same table. it's pretty awesome.

the clearaudio mm that comes with it is really good, especially for a bundle and it's substantial improvement over the denon mentioned.

i eventually upgraded to Audio-Technica AT150MLX, because my system is kinda dark sounding at times, but i'm looking forward to moving back to the clearaudio mm line in the future.

Thought I would post this here: I decided to treat myself to a couple of box sets.

333.jpg

"William Basinski's Disintegration Loops is being released in its entirety by Temporary Residence as an enormous box set that weighs 12lb. The set contains nine LPs, plus five CDs, a DVD and a 144 page book. It includes all four volumes of The Disintegration Loops, remastered and pressed to both CD and vinyl, plus two orchestral performances pressed to vinyl, the 63 minute film on DVD and a book featuring photos and liner notes by Basinski, Antony, David Tibet and others."

This is like porn to me

Having a bit of a DJ Shadow vinyl week!

Preemptive Strike is missing - not sure where it's gone, but have all of it on other records.

All the main albums are UK releases - the US reissue of Endtroducing looks tame in comparison.

What do you guys think of this record player on kickstarter?
http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/uturnaudio/the-orbit-turntable-0

I think it should be great for the money - there's quite a bit of chatter with the people at u-audio on audiokarma. Should be much better than anything else under $200.

If you can get past the lack of any automation. I have shaky hands, so prefer to have a lift/cue arm so I don't skip the stylus all over the record. Makes it easier to lift at the end too.

As someone who listens to music constantly, but has limited money and no knowledge of what makes a record player good, what do you guys suggest? I was hoping the OP would have a guide or something, but it is actually the worst OP I have ever seen. I am completely new to records but I've inherited a good collection and want to add to it.

How limited are you?

If you have lots of patience (e.g. six month) and keep check Craiglist or yard sales/ car boot sales, you can probably find a good older TT for very little money (under $100). The downside is that they may not be in perfect condition and you may have to wait a long time. Budget for a new cartridge and stylus (e.g. Red Ed) and be prepared to have to do some work/service. A lot of the grease in TT's hardens over time and may need to be cleared and replaced. It's a lot of fun to work on old TT's though. Most TT service manuals are available at vinyl engine.

To give two examples of TT's bought in the last year. Thorens TD-165 with good stylus and cartridge for $20. Techics SL-1650 for $10 with good stylus and cart.

Both are amazing TT's for that kind of money.

New TT's, look at Pro-ject, Rega, Music Hall for good budget players. You may need a phono amplifier if you amp doesn't have phono input (something like ART DJ II is a good starter). you won't have to worry about stylus condition and the shop may help set it up.

Do you know if the Grimes album always comes on coloured vinly, or is that a special edition? I really want to pick up Grimes, but knowing that there it comes on hot coloured vinyl makes me want to pick it up all the more.

It's a limited edition to Urban Outfitters. They had it on their website for a while but recently took it down. I just got lucky and grabbed a copy instore for $20. They go for $75+ on Discogs and eBay now.

You have to be quick with the Urban Outfitters colored vinyl. I missed out on the M83 blue/pink vinyl and trying to get a copy at a reasonable price has been tricky. :(

Ahh thanks for the clarification. I ordered some vinyl from UO once (Bon Iver on red vinyl and M83 on blue and pink clear vinyl), but the shipping costs to mainland Europe are simply insane and I also got screwed over by customs, so I had to pay an additional fee. Not worth the hassle.

GAF I need your input. I went out today to get a pre-amp so I could use my new record player. It came with standard RCA ports (redwhite) and I asked if I could get an adapter to plug my headphones in. He said no, this only works with speakers that already have their own power source... He's saying headphones wouldn't work with the pre-amp. I mentioned that I have an MBox 3, wondering if that could work as a pre-amp despite not having RCA ports. He said to get the pre-amp at their store, then run an RCA to line in into my MBox 3 and the plug my headphones into there!

I thought this guy didn't know what he was talking about. Why would I not just be able to plug my headphones into a pre-amp?

A phono pre-amp outputs a line-level signal. Headphones would not normally be driven directly from a line level signal as it would be too loud and you wouldn't be able to adjust the volume.

So you would want to go from your phono pre-amp to the line inputs on your mbox 3 - that should work perfectly. You will need cables to convert RCA to 6.5mm mono jacks for your mbox, but that shouldn't be too hard to do.

Is that Boys for Pele a single LP or double? The album is pretty long for a single record. Looks very cool though.

Yes, it's a double LP. I just only took photo of the one. I splurged a bit on it. I wish there was reissues of the older albums. They're so expensive to get a hold of.

Thanks for the help. Yes that would work, but my MBox and my Record player on on opposite sides of my room, it would be awkward to have a cable lined across my room.

Are there pre-amps that are designed to work with headphones as well?

Edit: Ooh, you got a Pro-ject Debut Carbon! Nice. Which phono preamp did you get?

For your existing setup (already having a phono preamp) something like a Fiio headphone amplifier may be the right way to go - you can use your existing phono stage and still drive headphones correctly and have adjustable volume.

Most hifi preamps (used with a separate power amplifier) have a headphone output and a phono stage, but that may be bulkier than you want, and they are usually expensive new, and may need some work if they are old/vintage.

I have a Luxman TP-117 hifi preamp and a Harman Kardon HK 825 hifi preamp which may give you an idea of what you are looking for. Both have excellent phono stages and good headphone stages.

The other option would be to get a DJ mixer. They have phono level inputs and headphone output with adjustable gain. Can be found cheap on Craigslist, but may be a little bit battle worn.

Looks like the Mbox 2 had phono input but the mbox 3 does not.

I've never needed to use that technique, but I hear mixed things about the steps and the end product.

Does anyone in the UK have a recommendation for the best place to sell a turntable, and to sell vinyl? I bought myself an RP1 a few months back, but the sad thing is I barely use it.

I've made the tough decision to sell the TT and pare down my vinyl collection a bit, just wondering where the best place to do this is.

Ugh, trying to find a decently priced copy of Nine Inch Nails' The Fragile. Came across someone selling one on Audiogon for $75 but missed it by a few hours. :(
