Stuck in the Past - a 33 RPM thread for vinyl listeners and collectors

Hello, GAF.

Well, I have close to 200 vinyl records, but most of those were from my dad. The records are mostly classic rock, from Deep Purple, Black Sabbath to the The Beatles.

Anyway, I want to start buying discs again and the cheapest option would be to go to flea markets.

But... is there an online store I could order older records? Amazon is very expensive.

I can get tons of records at flea markets for less than $5 bucks.

discogs.com as recommended before.

as a word of advice, do research on records before you shell out money for reissues/reprints of certain classics. a lot of these companies that do these "remastered" vinyl releases release very poor versions of classic albums (especially avoid companies like Plain records who, apparently, just source from MP3 files). most of the time the original pressed records are going to sound better.

I'm going to try at least once. If if doesn't work as expected, I'm going to return to flea markets.

They shut down my favorite record store, it was a Specs Records that looked like a big chain store, but had pretty much the biggest new selection in the city and a lot of great albums. Now my only option is a really small store that tends to only stock hipster essentials, ha. The act of browsing through records at a store feels like it's becoming extinct :(

Nearest record shop for me in London (45miles away). It sucks as digging is half the fun!

Graders are usually pretty accurate (they are rated so make sure you're buying from someone reputable) and prices tend to be cheaper than record stores that price above market value and eBay both. sometimes you'll find great things at flea markets or antique shops, but, in my experience, the quality of the vinyl itself is usually pretty dreadful unlike going to a dedicated record shop.

the closest GOOD record shop to me is about an hour and a half away. for the US midwest, it's an unprecedented treasure trove on occasion. i scored a VG+ original pressing of Eno's Another Green World there this weekend for a measly $10.

So, The Weeknd have a limited edition vinyl of the Trilogy album that came out last fall. Fucking thing is $200 DOLLARS.... and you still have to pay $25 for SHIPPING. UGH, I really wanted this set but that's rather steep.

yeah fuck that, sheesh. Hopefully he puts them out individually.

Anyways, came in here to ask you guys something. I got a turntable from a friend's parent and that's what I've been using for the last few years. This thing is OLD but it has an upgraded cartridge so that's kinda sweet. The table doesn't even have a proper counterweight. Anyways, some of the records I've bought have skips in them and I always thought they were just bad presses... But I put a penny on my cartridge and they all play fine now. The question is: is putting the penny there bad for all of my records? I've read that it can be, but I don't really see why, as I'm only putting enough weight on the arm to actually stay in the grooves. Someone elaborate, thanks!

i guess if the tone arm is too heavy the needle would scratch deeper/puncture the vinyl?

Could you guys explain Record Store Day to me? What time should I show up if there's stuff that seems like it'll fly off the shelf? Do people actually line up before they open?

RSD is a scam, just wait for a couple of months and scourge them from eBay later for cheaper. Unless you really really really want something that is really really really elusive then you better get friendly with the store owners.

for some things it is, sure, usually it's some tacky variant color vinyl or a lame reissue, but it's also a way to celebrate the independently owned record store. they get more traffic of sales on that day than any other.

Well yeah, but I really really wonder what's the return rate of the customers that come back to the shop after RSD (and before RSD winter, RSD halloween, RSD sunday, RSD groundhog day).

i don't know, but i was talking with a dude that owns a pretty reputable shop while waiting at a show the other night and he told me he turns around a $8000 - $10000 dollar profit on RSD (for a single day!) since this vinyl resurgence. that's a pretty huge amount for a locally owned shop manned by two people.

People definitely line up; my local record store had probably 50-60 people in line last year when I got there (about 45 minutes before open). Depending on your local store it could be better or worse. Also depends what's on the release list. For many items, RSD is just a glorified street date, as those items aren't limited and will be around for a while. There are some items that are truly limited, but again, get there real early if you're interested in that stuff. All that said, often there's plenty of stuff leftover for days afterward, so if you want something that doesn't have a heavy/cult following, odds are you'll be able to get it without lining up beforehand. My local store still has stuff from last year.

Don't do this. Support your local record store if you have one.

I used to feel this way. Unfortunately, the two major record stores in town are both so inept I've given up. I've tried to order albums from each multiple times - no transaction has ever ended successfully. Makes it nigh impossible to do any kind of supporting. I'll pay less on Amazon or some other online retailer and I'll get the record in two days instead of... never. ¯\(°_o)/¯

Hmm, there's actually a few releases I didn't know about that I want to pick up now.

● Cut Copy - Bright Like Neon Love LP
● Dan Deacon - Konono Ripoff No. 1 7-inch (500 copies)
● The Flaming Lips - Zaireeka quadruple-LP (random coloured vinyl, 7,500 copies)
● The Notorious B.I.G. - Ready to Die LP (white vinyl)
● Sigur Ros - Agaetis Byrjun LP

figure I would ask here...

I've never catalogued any of my vinyl/cd library. Is there a program thats easy to use and as detailed with Discog.com's label/pressing information? A mobile app would be a plus as well for when I'm at the record store so I don't run into the mistake of buying duplicates haha.

Discogs.com. Their mobile site is pretty decent too.

.

My local shop has live bands playing from the time they open until they close. Lots of deals, free food and raffles throughout the day.

My picks:
The Cure - Kiss Me, Kiss Me, Kiss me
The Joy Formidable - A Minute's Silence
At the Drive-In - Relationship of Command
Drive OST Picture Disc

are these cure remasters even worth it though? i know the disintegration reissue two years back wasn't as good sounding as the original LP. plus Kiss Me, Kiss Me, Kiss Me can be found for relatively cheap in great shape.

This looks very nice.

That thing looks insane. My brother gave me his old record player so I'm finally going to start buying some records. He gave me this.

I bought a few reissues.

Daft Punk - Discovery
RJD2 - Dead Ringer
DJ Shadow - Entroducing
Ministiry - Psalm 69
Also picked up In Rainbows.

Now that I finally got my cleaning products I'm listening to Discovery right now and it sounds amazing.

Haven't posted much on Neogaf, but I'm trying to get more into vinyl. My uncle gave me his old Technics SL-3200. I know it's not the best one available but will be servicable until I can afford a better one in a few weeks. I have a modest collection so far, the Dark Angel album is signed by the drummer, Gene Hoglan and Pretty Maids - Future World is signed by the two remaining members from that album. The two without covers are Mercyful Fate - Mercyful Fate and the 7" is a split between Nunslaughter and Cianide :

The Rhino remasters of the old albums on CD were really good, I can't speak for the vinyl though. Pornography sounds brilliant compared to the original release, they all did really.

So I have a couple of records and I don't own a turntable. Anyone have any recommendations for a good cheap, starter record player? I just want something good to get me started before I inevitably end up spending like $300 or $400 on a table.

Scourge flea markets, salvation armys and what not for older hi-fi players, if it works, it weights a ton (and has any good impressions online maybe) and is cheap, get that.

I don't know anything about classical music, but I want to get a gift for a musician friend. Any suggestions on Baroque music released on vinyl?

Yeah. If you want to buy new, the most affordable good turntables will start at around 300€ (would be the Rega RP1 in my opinion).

The official Record Store Day list went up.
This will be my first time going to RSD - the numbers on that list seem pretty limited for a worldwide event, i'm guessing I won't see a lot of it in New Zealand D: Hope to come away with Pink Floyd - See Emily Play at the very least.

I might get Pornography if my store has it. It would be my first 7''.

Are 7'' records normally 45's?

Yes. 33 RPM 7" do exist but aren't that common.

UK RSD has some great stuff:
