Stuck in the Past - a 33 RPM thread for vinyl listeners and collectors

RSD pickups:

Sufjan Stevens - Carrie & Lowell: Limited clear vinyl edition. Check this out if you haven't, it's my AOTY so far...

Polaris - Music from the Adventures of Pete and Pete: Main reason I went to Record Store Day. Wanted this album on vinyl since I started collecting.

Foo Fighters - Songs from the Laundry Room: These are Dave Grohl's early demos for the first album. I like his take on Kids In America.

Grizzly Bear - Horn of Plenty: Clear black splatter vinyl. It's probably my least favorite Grizzly Bear album since Daniel Rossen didn't join the band yet, but it's pretty good nonetheless.

Brian Eno - My Squelchy Life: An overlooked RSD release. Didn't see anyone else pick this up. It's an unreleased album that was pulled and replaced with Nerve Net.

Also got this in from Bull Moose today:

It's the Red House Painters box set. These were limited to 1500, and they were only available for a very short time on the 4AD and Bull Moose websites. Most went to indie shops, though most only got one or two. This set includes the first four Red House Painters albums and the Shock Me EP, which is added on side D of Ocean Beach. All of the records are on bronze-colored vinyl (as pictured). If you missed out, you can preorder the individual releases that are coming out in August at 4AD's website.

Those bronze LPs look great.

Not sure if this is the right place (or even if this is kosher) but just wanted to point this out to some of y'all:

https://www.massdrop.com/buy/pro-ject-debut-carbon?mode=guest_open

It's a group buy for the Debut Carbon, which after shipping will be about $330 shipped. If anyone's looking to upgrade a lower-end table or (like me) trying to find a budget entry to get back into the game (sold my TT when money was tight a couple years ago) this looks like a pretty awesome get.

Hey guys, there's an album I'm looking for that's kind of rare (Babyshambles - Down In Albion) that came out in 2005. It's like one of my favourite albums but the cheapest price on Discogs is £85 and there's no listings on regular market places since it's out of print. What would be the best way to try and get it? My friends and I have emailed the label but just got the generic "Thanks for your support, we'll update you if anything changes" answer. Is there any other way to try get it reissued?

Managed to find RSD Coachwhips for 22 after shipping. Yes. Couldn't find it when I searched on Castle Face, but google lead me to the right place.

Have now visited Amoeba in both San Fran and LA, and honestly, I've rarely been as disappointed in what's supposed to be a really great store. Three-quarters of their stock is CDs and movies, and the vinyl selection is pretty mediocre; used stuff is way overpriced too. The place is the size of a small Wal-Mart but I didn't find a damn thing I wanted.

i can think of about 8 other shops I'd rather hit in San Francisco than the Amoeba up here. It is garbage and a lot of the workers there are generally fucking rude as hell.

Aquarius Records
Rooky Ricardo’s Records
Green Apple Books
Vinyl Dreams
Groove Merchant Records
Thrillhouse Records
Streetlight Records
The Explorist International Records

then you got

Recycled Records
Jack’s Record Cellar
RS94109
Grooves
101 Music
The Music Store

Amoeba kind of sucks. I feel you.

I had two pickups today - the Ghost in the Shell soundtrack and the Far Cry 3 Blood Dragon soundtrack. The Blood Dragon soundtrack arrived with a damaged sleeve, although I blame Ubisoft/the label more than the shipper because the damn thing is in a thin glossy paper sleeve like a single from the 80s. The records themselves are in ugly clear plastic sleeves instead of paper ones, and all in all it's a pretty tacky release. I'm not sure if they were trying to be cute and make it look like a piece of shit single release from the 80s - if so, mission accomplished I guess. Awesome album to have on LP though.

The GITS soundtrack... well, turns out it's a boot. My fault, really, I jumped at the chance to buy it when I saw it was available online without doing any research. It's actually very nicely put together (and it's not like a vinyl version exists otherwise) and sounds fine, but I've been hoodwinked by K.O Records for the last time.

Less successful pickups today, haha. Gonna hit up some stores on the weekend and see if I can't do better.

This wasn't always the case. Before the big vinyl boom it was really great. Now the two shops are so picked over there's almost nothing good in the bins. That's not to mention that there's a new, little record shop on ever corner in LA now.

Also: at least as far as metal goes I know LA's metal buyer quit and started his own shop, Vacation. I noticed a precipitous drop in quality after that.

People looking for metal records should make a trip to Portland. Music Millennium and Mississippi Records have some of the best stocked metal sections I've seen for non-specialist stores.

That's encouraging. I've only ever been to Everyday. Will have to make a trip.

Sigh.

I bought two copies of the same 7" about four weeks ago. Two weeks later, they haven't been delivered so I e-mail them asking them if they sent them yet. They don't respond to my message but they send me my order confirmation, so I assume they forgot to send my shit. Whatever, it's on it's way now.

Two weeks later, AKA two days ago, I get a message saying the order was sent March 30th and delivered the 4th of April. I never received my 7"s and they're telling me they were delivered almost a month ago.

I messaged them asking them for the tracking number and I guess it's time to call the post office on Monday. My regular postman never leaves anything on my doorstep but I think there's a second postman because on some days I come home during lunch and there's been packages resting against my door out in the open because I don't have anything even close to a porch or anywhere someone can stash something in plain view.

If my shit did get stolen and not lost in their warehouse or something, I'm going to be fucking pissed. I think that 7" went out of stock since I ordered them and because they were such a small bandsI doubt the split would get repressed ever again.

that's rough, buddy.

and that's exactly why I've been getting my shit delivered to my work's reception for about six years now. I live like 70 miles away from work so I would absolutely never take that chance. Even when I was local to work at a place where there was usually people home at the time of mail delivery I never felt comfortable having packages go there since it was on the corner of a busy street.

that's good to know. My family wants to drive up there, hitting NorCal breweries on the way.

All this metal talk has made me go out and buy more metal.

Well, it's the ten year anniversary of Demon Days next month and they haven't announced a repress :(

I was a little shocked when I found out how much they were going for. I think I just need The Fall LP to complete my vinyl collection of their studio albums.

Nice, I should really look for Nightfall someday.

Yeah, I did a double take when I was setting up my Discogs account and realized the copy of Demon Days I picked up before I was even heavily into collecting records was worth so much. I've been tempted to sell it, but also... I have a huge nostalgic soft spot for that album.

The album is a top 3 album of all time for me so I will never sell it.

The album came out when vinyl hadn't blown up yet so there was the initial pressing and that was it.

Just got back from a Clutch/Mastodon show with an autographed Mastodon record, will post pics tomorrow when I'm not so dead tired.

What's crazy is that I picked it up in like 2012. It was just sitting there in a record store in the 'G' section. Lucky find.

I wish I could still do that. I can't at this new job. My 7"s can be confirmed stolen at this point. The tracking says they were left at the front door.

I just need to call and yell enough about that stupid bitch that just leaves my shit on my fucking door. She did it again while I was even home. She left a big ass box sitting in front of my door for a couple hours the other day.

I've been talking to the record label I bought them from and he sympathized with me and said he'd ask around if anyone is willing to part ways with their copies.

20 Buck Spin is really great, period. Certainly one of the cleanest and best-presented distros out there. Great stock and their own roster is pretty solid.
