Anyone from Japan-GAF seen Summer Wars yet? According to ANN it premiered on August 1st. How was it? I love love looove Hosoda's last film.

I've seen it and its awesome beyond words. Then again, I loved Toki wo Kakeru Shoujo and I'm a sucker for the underlying themes in Summer Wars.

The commercials and pretty much all promo materials do a good swerve as to what it really is though. I had no clue coming in what it was going to be about.

Generally speaking, in both Japan and the US, you don't talk smack about your employers, and that's multiply true when your business is entertainment. When a movie project goes really bad, later on the actors may sheepishly make a few comments, but usually they're few and far between.

But Aya Hirano, the popular seiyuu/would-be singer/would-be model behind the voice of Haruhi in The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya, has few such qualms. Sankaku Complex links to an appearance Hirano made-- though I don't think the quote in the headline is a potentially misleading translatin. What she actually says is "yatteru hou yori miteru hou ga taihen da na to omoinagara..." which is roughly that she thinks that watching it was worse (tougher, harsher, or if you prefer, more awful) than making it.

She goes on to talk about the pressure of having to record the same episode eight times. (Remember, they re-animated each episode, so it would need to be re-recorded every time, not just the few changes.)

Hirano also notes that all of the cast was mystified when they heard they'd be doing the same episode, and that it was especially tough for Tomokazu Sugita, who plays Kyon, because he had some ad-lib moments.

She also thanks fans who stuck with the show past Endless Eight and says that it's nice to have escaped the arc.

Lord, respect to her but damn KyoAni you fallen from Grace and you really cant get up. :lol

Eh. The arc was a bit frustrating but I wasn't as invested in the series as some others were--I gave up after the fourth loop, I think.

Sigh is actually turning out to be not bad. KyoAni gave us K-ON last season so I forgive 'em.

Hopefully there's a season 6 sooner rather than later.

Best part of season 5 was when
Toshi's bat hit Gibson right in the heart
. I almost died laughing. :lol :lol

Here's the first part of the Soul Eater's english voice actors if anyone still cares (
So basically Zoe
):

Liz - Jamie Marchi
Kid - Todd Haberkorn
Patty - Cherami Leigh
Death Scythe - Vic Mignogna

yes mazinger. the only shining light in the past couple anime seasons amid all the loli and fanservice crap. not enough mazinger hype.
I guess these days people just can't appreciate a show about giant robot that transforms into a fist of a Greek god to bring forth untold destruction.

Basquash 20 has been a cool episode, beside the Rouge piece which I hoped wouldn't happen.
Saki 20... I hope there will be a good reason for the sister's fallout, considering Saki's memories that we have been shown sometimes and what her sister said in the episode.

Cross game is the only one I was watching at the moment...(Naruto ongoing)

I tried a few from the summer season but couldn't get into any of them...

I hear the Bakemo-(forget the spelling) is good, but I am looking for something lighter....

Best new anime of the year for me. Better than Cross Game in my opinion and a hell of a lot less pretentious.

Fuck yes it is!

First off, I don't follow baseball here in the States let alone Japan, and as an extension of that I sure as fuck don't follow Japanese High School baseball but the concept of a high school getting a Principle with the sole intention of going to the high school nationals, hiring some super coach to get them there and players from all across the country flocking to that coach for High School baseball was just silly. To add insult to injury the B team was just silly as fuck.

The whole plot of having to train in secret to beat your schools A team because the coach was so blinded by himself to see any of the players on the B team as worthwhile because they aren't ringers who came to the school just for him was just pretentious as fuck.

The seriousness that they wrap the baseball parts in is just fucking hilarious. And Azuma's brother? Why do people know who he is? His injury was in all the papers? Lol. Is High School baseball really THAT big of a deal?

Only a top class athlete could see something in a window from a moving train?

The whole show just wraps itself in this seriousness that just makes it funny. I like some of the characters and think it's a good show, but the importance it places on high school baseball and their individual abilities is just hilarious in my opinion.

rant about Cross Game

Wow, you sure have a lot of complaints for someone who admit to knowing nothing about what baseball means in Japan, especially to the youth there.

Honestly, I think you missed the whole point of the show. It is not actually about baseball, it's more of a relationship/slice of life series with the sport as a backdrop (and I'll gander that it is similar in Taisho as well).

I saw Taisho. While I'll admit it is a better show than what I give it credit for on first impression, its portrayal of baseball is pretty silly (more so than your problems with Cross Game). A bunch of girls in which the majority has never participated in any organized sports or physical activities can miraculously and suddenly become good baseball players through mere hard work? It's true that hard work is important, but there's also this thing called talent. Even so, I can overlook that and enjoy it for what it is because baseball is just a means for the writer to tell his story.

Honestly, both shows could've been about anything, but I do believe that baseball has a special importance to the Japanese culture to be chosen as the setting for these stories. I completely disagree with your complaints, and it kind of shows how ignorant you are especially since you know nothing of the culture the series is intended for.

It's not so much a rant, I like Cross Game, I just think it's pretentious.

Taishou IS sillier than Cross Game, I've never said otherwise and never will unless it ends with them getting utterly annihilated by the men in the end as well, nothing gets resolved, and they all resign themselves to the time and to their sex.

I think one thing people should understand is pretentiousness to me isn't always a negative but I was responding to a post looking for something "light" and I feel that because I do find several of the characters and one of the main themes of Cross Game to be pretentious I do not classify it as "light." That's of course a relatively moving target dependent on an individuals tastes I'll admit, but that's the best I can do as a human.

As for my ignorance on the importance of baseball to the Japanese, especially high school baseball, yep, I admitted it earlier, will admit it again, and will go one further and say that for people not Japanese that are asking for Japanese media to watch that there's concepts that readily translate over and make sense to both groups and some that don't and that neither view is wrong. It's not idiotic to be naive of Japanese baseball and it doesn't make a non Japanese persons take on whether something is silly or not more or less valid because both views exist. Taking your statement to the extreme it's almost as if saying that for Americans to not take High School baseball that seriously(besides parents and coaches getting in fights, fuck yeah) is socially wrong. Both views are correct. But even saying all that, I still question if high school baseball is taken THAT seriously in Japan.

Arguably, it's bigger than professional baseball there, so yes it is taken that seriously.

Haha, if I didn't still know some areas of the country still took professional baseball seriously I'd be confused by this post, where I'm from we take professional baseball about as seriously as we take professional ice skating, which means I guess we take high school baseball more seriously than professional baseball here as well. Haha my town rocks lol.

In all honesty, I've always felt that taking high school sports more seriously than professional sports made more sense since everyone pretty much has a high school they can cheer for. I've always questioned why the fuck I should care how the Houston Astros do when I'll never play for them or know anyone who played for them and live hours and hours away from a place where I could even see them play. At least in high school sports you can see every game, know the family of the players, have a past association with the school, the ties are just deeper.

It's like how high school or college football is bigger than the NFL in some parts of the US. Maybe that's a better comparison.

Hey, how'd I miss that? :lol Thanks, guy.

Can't we like both shows? No need for a knife fight.
Sure. I said I like both shows.

They're fucking animes and mangas, think about it, if those were actual "criticisms" of Cross Game that's not really that bad is it? I have "criticisms" of everything, doesn't mean I think negatively of them. Cross Game has well developed characters and handles interpersonal relationships way better than most shows with good dialog, so if I find the baseball aspects contrived to a degree that doesn't take away from the characters or the rest of the plot, any more than Minmei hurt my impression of Macross.

No one should take what I say that seriously.

Catching up on the episodes I've missed while on holidays.

FMA: Really happy to see
Lust's death
animated, something I've wanted to see for years.
ZSZS: Enjoyable as always, picked up the first volume of the manga as well
Tokyo 8.0: I continue to dig this. Am I in the minority?

Still behind on Bakemonogatari, 3 or so episodes to watch.
Aoi Hana too... :lol

But the arguments you made did absolutely nothing in any way, shape, or form to justify your claim that it's "pretentious." Are you sure you know what the word means?

Simply taking something like high school baseball seriously (and having goofy side plots about high school administration politics that it also plays straight) is hardly "pretentious."

Talking about these things and acting like it's the most profound and intellectual insight into the world of baseball and administrative corruption ever seen in an animated medium WOULD be pretentious.

Somehow, from what I've seen, I really don't think Cross Game is doing that...

* Main Entry: pre·ten·tious
* Pronunciation: \pri-ˈten(t)-shəs\
* Function: adjective
* Etymology: French prétentieux, from prétention pretension, from Medieval Latin pretention-, pretentio, from Latin praetendere
* Date: 1832

1 : characterized by pretension: as a : making usually unjustified or excessive claims (as of value or standing) <the pretentious fraud who assumes a love of culture that is alien to him — Richard Watts> b : expressive of affected, unwarranted, or exaggerated importance, worth, or stature <pretentious language> <pretentious houses>
2 : making demands on one's skill, ability, or means : ambitious <the pretentious daring of the Green Mountain Boys in crossing the lake — American Guide Series: Vermont>

I think it fits, although as it stands I may in fact be wrong and perhaps high school baseball does enjoy such a status in Japan however from my point of view it does indeed have an exaggerated worth in the show.

Calling Cross Game pretentious on the basis that you don't know anything about the importance of high school baseball in Japan is a bit wrong, imho.
While I can understand that thought, just a little bit of research will show you that it just isn't.
It just so happens that japanese people put alot of importance on high school baseball.

Oh my God are we still on this?

It's why in one quote I used "criticism" with the quotes because I'm trying to convey that it's not a true criticism. It will always seem pretentious to me because I'm not fucking Japanese and never will be. You can explain to me all you want, and I can think "wow that's cool" but it will always be pretentious to me. So the fuck what? Even if I fully understand something it doesn't mean I'll necessarily agree or find it normal even if in that culture it is.

And again, I'm discussing this shit in an English speaking forum, I'm not going over to Japan calling them names, I'm discussing what a person in this region of the world may or may not enjoy based on our culture and how I felt about it.

Fucking anime is serious business here.

I hope to see this same sentiment expressed next time some woman sues because of sexual harassment or Japan builds another wacky robot.

Dude, whatever, think whatever you want.
You want to think the show is pretentious because you don't follow baseball in general and japaense high school baseball in particular among other things? Go right ahead. I'm not telling you what you have to think.
I don't understand tho why all the anger for pointing you toward a wiki article that explains that high school baseball is serious business for japanese people, the ones the show is directed at.

Man, this looks like a truly horrid season. Is it just getting worse every season?

Cross Game is awesome and I'm british. Being british means that I have zero interest in the sport, I don't think about, I don't see it played, the only player I know is Turanga Leela (the worst female player in the universe) yet I love Cross Game (and the other Adachi baseball mangas).

And honestly it doesn't surprise me that high school baseball would be taken seriously after living in Japan for a year. They love having any reason to cheer or celebrate something.
