It's a rival fight. Is using guns against Vergil the best way to fight him? No, you get rebellion and have a sick sword fight.
The arkham influences in combat don't really play well with the Demon's Souls inspired stuff, but it's not half bad.

When magic is properly balanced, it's fun. It's OP in Demons/Dark Souls, so it takes the challenge out of the game, and is no longer tense.
In Dark Souls II, my magic build is actually my favorite build, and right behind it is my Hex Dexer.
