Alot of ninbots are gonna get their feathers ruffled up because of this thread..but its true, the game just dont feel nearly as good as it did when it came out on N64 and to me..looks worse and plays worse.

Ninbots...?
Looks worse...?

I present to you Exhibit A

OH SHIT!

i don't understand how the people who "get" mario 64 DS' controls continue to stomp all over the ones who don't. stop trying to justify your purchase to everyone; no one cares. controls are a highly subjective area of gameplay, and with a control scheme as different as mario 64 DS', of course there are going to be people who have trouble adapting.

personally, i think the controls suck, d-pad, stylus, thumb adaptor thingamabob or not. i might be used to them by now and fully competent at playing just as well as an analog stick, but i fail to see how my lessened enjoyment of one of the greatest platforming games ever is somehow a terrible, terrible statement just because some snobby posters had the controls click for them instantaneously.

It's no big deal to me if others suck at this game, but they should stop acting like that makes the game bad somehow. :D

Yes, the lack of filtering gives it a more ragged, raw look that reflects the "hip, new" Nintendo style.

Who are you?

On the small screen you don't notice that. All you notice are the better textures, better models, better color scheme, and sharper look.

Olimario isn't really good at this, is he? :lol

And not liking a control scheme doesn't make you weak-sauce. You can finish a game while still hating the controls (because you like pretty much everything else), and you can stop playing a game without it having to be hard.

They look similar to me, and I couldn't give two shakes over the tradeoff between filtering/perspective correction versus redrawn textures. BOTH look like an N64 game.

But that doesn't matter. What makes me pop a boner for Mario 64 is the awesome gameplay and controls that are as smooth as a baby goat's rear end. Whether or not that can be done with a DS will be seen as soon as I can touch a DS on Thursday.

One looks like a first gen N64 game and the other the a top of the crop N64 game.
That's like saying there's no difference between BMX XXX and Halo 2 because they're both XBOX games.

This is retarded. Bye. (Leaves thread)

This picture shows a better improvement over the N64 version,

I've been playing with the thumbstrap with no problems at all, it takes a litle time to get used to it, but after that, everything plays well.

NINTENDO DS IS GOOD! YOU PEOPLE JUST CAN'T APPRECIATE THE GENIUS OF USING INADEQUATE CONTROLS WHERE AN ANALOG STICK SHOULD BE USED!

WEAK SAUCE! WEAK SAUCE! WEAK SAAAAAAAAAAAAAAUUUUUUUUUUUUUCE!!!!!!!

The models are definately better and more smoothly animated IMHO, but I liked the older color scheme better as it looked more cartoony.

I don't think it's fair to just assume that. Since control setups are (as you said) subjective, it's expected that we'll sometimes have conflicting views. That said, most of the posts are simply personal accounts of their experience with the game - nothing wrong with that.

That said, I couldn't beat the penguin race with the d-pad. This is when I started using the stylus and have been using it ever since.

But again, that's just me. :)

I don't know about about a HUGE graphical difference, but it definitely looks better on the DS. One thing you have to consider about the above posted screenshots, is that the game looks a lot better on the actual DS screen than any screenshot would lead you to believe. In addition to that, the N64 version actually looks WORSE on a tv than the screenshot would lead you to believe. When I played Mario64 on my 32" tv at the time, it looked like a low-res blurry mess, and if I try to hook my N64 up to my current 51" hdtv, it looks absolutely terrible. The DS version looks a lot sharper, I don't miss the filtered textures at all.

I had an idea about a DS accessory that was basically an analog stick that attaches to the bottom screen somehow, it's hard to describe but underneath the analog stick there is a stylus thingy touching the screen that moves with the stick, and it would be spring loaded so as to provide some tension. I can see it working in my head, dunno if it would work in practice though.

Color banding is a bit more pronounced in the DS version (filtering would have helped as I see Mario's cap and shirt are textured now... I think), I have noticed that, but I welcome the newer models and the frame-rate.

OH SHIT!

Wait, what exactly are you trying to prove? That M64DS looks better or worse than the N64 version? Honestly, both of them have certain aspects that I prefer, but I'd give the edge to the N64 version.

In motion, the DS version has a strange feeling that makes it feel as if distant objects aren't nearly as solid as they should be. Also, the blurry texture filtering was part of what made Mario 64 look very good.

The DS version is more detailed, from a geometry standpoint, but it just isn't as smooth looking. Plus, in that shot you posted, I dislike the change made to the color scheme (which I noticed while playing as well, though it is more obvious here).

I like this pic, the DS version has a nice curved bridge and the doorway is more rounded.

Once again, though, the DS version just doesn't look as vibrant and has a distinct lack of solidity (which really becomes noticible in motion). You are focusing solely on ONE aspect of the picture...

You're impossible.
You know as well as I do that the DS version looks far superior. I can't even understand why there would be a debate. It's too far out of the realm of what might possibly be considered subjective.

I don't care if it looks more awesomer than Halo 4. Mario 64 DS looks fine; I don't think anyone can rightly complain about that. Its problem is still the dang touchscreen analog. They shoulda made this for GC.

Erm, you don't have to keep your thumb in a miniscule part of the screen when using the thumbstrap. When you slide outside the circle it just moves the circle and keeps you running.

The only time you need to keep within the circle is if you're walking, which isn't a problem. I was worried I' have to do the aforementioned, but the fact it follows your thumb makes running around a hell of a lot easier.

John, I know I bitched to you about Mario 64 DS controls a few days ago but I think I've finally come around to realizing how good of a game this is. I've gotten 21 stars now using the stylus "dual mode" and I find it to be very intuitive. The only thing I'm still wrestling with is the repositioning of the stylus every minute or so. :) Oh, that and also flying with Mario seems to be harder than it should be with the stylus... for that, I have to switch to standard mode.

But the DS represents something else to me too... last night, I made Masako first try the doodle mode in Mario, and she drew a picture of my face and had fun fucking with it. Then she played the mini-games and got immediately hooked on a couple of them. I've never seen her play ANY game, much less get hooked like that. The controls of the mini-games using the stylus was immediately accessible to her -- and I imagine probably to the millions of unwashed ungamer masses out there.

Very pleased with my DS now.

"That being said, I've only tried Metroid Hunters at Best Buy and I gave up after about a minute. "

Heh. I had the same problem too. I tried out the DS at EBX and after playing Hunters, using the stylus to look around while using the buttons to move, I said forget it.

Surely there are others out there besides me who are finding none of the available control schemes in Super Mario 64 DS to be any good?

I tried playing with the d-pad, but movement is so limited, and it's a pain in the ass to hold down the dash button all the time to run...

I tried playing with the stylus, but... I mean, no. Games like this were not meant to be controlled with a pointing device. It's just not fun.

And finally, I tried using the little thumbstrap thingy, but it's too much work to keep it steady on the bottom screen. I find myself repositioning the strap every two minutes, which is a huge distraction and also a pain in the ass.

I admit I'm still early on but I'm having trouble finding the urge to dig deeper because the controls are so poor. Is anyone else out there feeling like this?

Yeah, I feel the same way. I wouldve much rather Nintendo included anolog controll rather than wasting their time wtih GBA backwards compatability.

Ah another one! Sell your PSPs... ItSah ovah! :lol :D

I haven't played SM64DS but I love the new texture sets. Filtering aside the game looks much, much better on the DS.

Yeah, lots of people have been posting in various threads about their girlfriends or female non-gamer friends playing their DSes and loving it. Same thing happened here, bigtime.

My girlfriend played mini-games like crazy in St. Louis over Thanksgiving.

YES, where have you been Olimario?

I even posted "Olimario invented the Girlfriend" after seeing many people posting about the Mario Mini-Games being played by GFs and Wives

I'd rather they stop putting games on the system that try to emulate an analog joystick and do some orignal stuff that takes advantage of the system myself....

CVG will make a story about "people getting divorced because of the DS" in a few days :)

Weak Sauce.
WEAK. SAUCE.

The D-Pad controls work wonderfully. If you cant play it just fine with the D-Pad you are WEAK SAUCE. It's simple and intuitive and if you cant get over it to play an awesome update of an amazing game you are weak sauce.

In fact, I've found some Stars are easier to get with this control setup. Some things just weren't easy with the oddly placed N64 analog.

Hehaha good one Olimario! Ha ha ha!
