HOLY MOTHER OF PENIS IT'S VIRTUALLY NIGHT AND DAY

Sho Nuff said:Yes, the lack of filtering gives it a more ragged, raw look that reflects the "hip, new" Nintendo style.
Who are you?

belgurdo said:The game now looks like a first gen DC title instead of a first gen N64 title, correct?
olimario said:On the small screen you don't notice that. All you notice are the better textures, better models, better color scheme, and sharper look.
Sho Nuff said:They look similar to me, and I couldn't give two shakes over the tradeoff between filtering/perspective correction versus redrawn textures. BOTH look like an N64 game.
But that doesn't matter. What makes me pop a boner for Mario 64 is the awesome gameplay and controls that are as smooth as a baby goat's rear end. Whether or not that can be done with a DS will be seen as soon as I can touch a DS on Thursday.

That's like saying there's no difference between BMX XXX and Halo 2 because they're both XBOX games.

"The difference is night and day"
olimario said:But it's the truth. I'm having an easier time with this title than I was with Mario on the 64.

NINTENDO DS IS GOOD! YOU PEOPLE JUST CAN'T APPRECIATE THE GENIUS OF USING INADEQUATE CONTROLS WHERE AN ANALOG STICK SHOULD BE USED!
WEAK SAUCE! WEAK SAUCE! WEAK SAAAAAAAAAAAAAAUUUUUUUUUUUUUCE!!!!!!!

stop trying to justify your purchase to everyone; no one cares.

I've been playing with the thumbstrap with no problems at all, it takes a litle time to get used to it, but after that, everything plays well.

Looks worse...?

I like this pic, the DS version has a nice curved bridge and the doorway is more rounded.
dark10x said:Wait, what exactly are you trying to prove? That M64DS looks better or worse than the N64 version? Honestly, both of them have certain aspects that I prefer, but I'd give the edge to the N64 version.
In motion, the DS version has a strange feeling that makes it feel as if distant objects aren't nearly as solid as they should be. Also, the blurry texture filtering was part of what made Mario 64 look very good.
The DS version is more detailed, from a geometry standpoint, but it just isn't as smooth looking. Plus, in that shot you posted, I dislike the change made to the color scheme (which I noticed while playing as well, though it is more obvious here).
john tv said:Surely there are others out there besides me who are finding none of the available control schemes in Super Mario 64 DS to be any good?
I tried playing with the d-pad, but movement is so limited, and it's a pain in the ass to hold down the dash button all the time to run...
I tried playing with the stylus, but... I mean, no. Games like this were not meant to be controlled with a pointing device. It's just not fun.
And finally, I tried using the little thumbstrap thingy, but it's too much work to keep it steady on the bottom screen. I find myself repositioning the strap every two minutes, which is a huge distraction and also a pain in the ass.
I admit I'm still early on but I'm having trouble finding the urge to dig deeper because the controls are so poor. Is anyone else out there feeling like this?
chespace said:John, I know I bitched to you about Mario 64 DS controls a few days ago but I think I've finally come around to realizing how good of a game this is. I've gotten 21 stars now using the stylus "dual mode" and I find it to be very intuitive. The only thing I'm still wrestling with is the repositioning of the stylus every minute or so.Oh, that and also flying with Mario seems to be harder than it should be with the stylus... for that, I have to switch to standard mode.
But the DS represents something else to me too... last night, I made Masako first try the doodle mode in Mario, and she drew a picture of my face and had fun fucking with it. Then she played the mini-games and got immediately hooked on a couple of them. I've never seen her play ANY game, much less get hooked like that. The controls of the mini-games using the stylus was immediately accessible to her -- and I imagine probably to the millions of unwashed ungamer masses out there.
Very pleased with my DS now.

My girlfriend played mini-games like crazy in St. Louis over Thanksgiving.
MAZYORA said:Yeah, I feel the same way. I wouldve much rather Nintendo included anolog controll rather than wasting their time wtih GBA backwards compatability.
bobbyconover said:Yeah, lots of people have been posting in various threads about their girlfriends or female non-gamer friends playing their DSes and loving it. Same thing happened here, bigtime.
olimario said:Weak Sauce.
WEAK. SAUCE.
The D-Pad controls work wonderfully. If you cant play it just fine with the D-Pad you are WEAK SAUCE. It's simple and intuitive and if you cant get over it to play an awesome update of an amazing game you are weak sauce.
In fact, I've found some Stars are easier to get with this control setup. Some things just weren't easy with the oddly placed N64 analog.
