Super Metroid |OT| Prequel to Other M

Ban OP for thread title.

Aside from the insult of linking to Other M, a prequel comes out after the game its plot is chronologically before. It's not a prequel of any kind.

There are kids that grew up with the Wii that are now in their teens about to buy this off the Wii U store without knowing exactly what it is. It'll be like discovering porn.

Ofcourse not, and that was not my point. The score of Super Metoid is just criminal, as I wrote earlier, that game breaks every conceivable scoring method there is.
As I pointed out there seemed to be something of a problem with how to properly evaluate VC games, it's interesting to note that it seems some of their reviews since became "features" instead, F-Zero X got a 6.5 when re-reviewed for Wii VC, but that score's vanished entirely, and I assume the same happened with Ocarina of Time.

Part of me thinks Super Metroid is the most overrated game of all time even though I love it. It's the one game in best-games-discussions that I have trouble justifying its presence, especially when Zero Mission and Metroid Prime perfected its unique qualities.

I could never get behind all the hyperbole. Even when EGM back in the day deemed it the best game of all time, I was genuinely surprised; all I could think was "Really?"

Yeah I dont know. I just think the games should be judged based on how they are to play today, and not based on how long it took to come out or some bullshit like that. That means both Ocarina and Super Metroid deserves top scores (or extremely close to it) imo, and a game like F-Zero X probably deserves a bit lower since GX is mostly superior in every way - also imo. In other words, judge them solely on the quality of the game just like any other game. Is that so hard?

It's got a little bit of everything in it, so people almost always find reasons to like it (same goes for OoT). For that reason alone, it ends up on best-of lists for the virtue of always being worth someone's time.

people often debate whether this or Prime is the best ever metroid game

Which is unnecessary because Super is clearly superior!

Seriously, Super holds up incredibly well, and not solely because it's wonderful sprite work, moody visuals, and timeless score remain impeccable. Rather, it's the fact that this game manages to be moving, memorable, and even cinematic without abandoning the fact that, yes, it's a game! Not only do you become Samus thanks to nearly impeccable controls, once you hit Zebes that control is never wrested from you, regardless of what's happening. Despite this, the game manages to convey a truly unforgettable series of events. It's a gaming masterpiece.

Oh my! Is that Super Power or whatever the name was? As a norwegian, Super Metoid never got reviewed since we lost an issue when Nintendo-Magasinet changed into Super Power here (we lost Secret of Mana too), but OH BOY does that bring up memories. Always loved the rpg-special they had as number 3 95 with reviews of Final Fantasy 3, Breath of Fire, Illusion of Gaia and Brain Lord. That was awesome!

Super Metroid will be on a 24-megabit cartridge, the largest ever. It's going to be the biggest game ever, but will it be the best game ever?

Really? The first point is just your opinion (and not mine), the second is missing the tongue-in-cheek nature of it.

I really didn't like Metroid II one bit and the first Metroid wasn't that great either. I only picked up Super Metroid because a) it was half the price of other games in the shop I went to and b) it was in a huge box! Ended up becoming one of my top five games of all time. Thanks, big box.

Well, it is why I think a quick write-up and a thumbs up/thumbs down works best. If you want an indepth review, well, there's going to be features where people look back on the game seriously or just old reviews to dig up, trying to evaluate it as if it were a new release today can be tricky, but it's not so tricky to simply say whether the game's still worth checking out, at least for a straight re-release like this.

Though some of those older reviews strangely enough have criticisms more in line with what'd make sense on a modern game. Game gets called on being too short in the edge review, but how long WERE many games then anyway that weren't RPGs? I wager most action titles were the same length, maybe shorter.

I feel the same way about Best Game Ever lists, only with me, I shake my head in disgust every time I see Tetris take the top spot. Super Metroid deserves it :3

They'll probably think it's lame and boring actually. Stupid kids.
I wonder. Maybe if it spontaneously showed up on 360, but if you're a kid seriously playing Wii and Wii U I bet your interests would be more in line with Mario and Zelda unless all you want is CoD and your parents only get you Nintendo consoles.

Then there's Angry Birds kids, who the fuck knows how it'd go down with them.

That system works as well, but in my honest opinion, most of these games stand well beyond what comes out today, even with the technological advancements and the fact that they were short, difficult etc. So I think they could easily be reviewed the same was as modern games, but I guess most modern journos wouldnt view it that way, and score them lower than what they deserve. My point being: These games aren't great considering when they came out. They are simply great.

What's amazing is we live in a world where Angry Birds is more than 3 times the cost of Super Metroid.

lol why are people mad at the title? It's just a joke.

I'm surprised at the amount of people who haven't played this game yet. You're all in for a treat.

Man it's been a long, long time since I last played this. And I pretty much just breezed through it as fast as possible since that was the summer vacation I basically just spent playing SNES. And I had a lot of other games I wanted to get through before school started.

Really looking forward to the Wii U version since I remember very little outside of a couple boss fights, the ending, and
that fucking pipe
. I'll 100% it properly this time.
