Super Nintendo Consoles Seem to Be Getting Faster

  • Recent data shows that the Super Nintendo's Audio Processing Unit speeds up over time and runs even faster as the console warms up.
  • Findings confirm that SNES consoles in 2025 run faster than their original specifications.
  • The increase in APU speed may slightly affect the pitch of notes, but it's unlikely to impact gameplay.
Nintendo just keeps winning

I remember some speed running group figured out that a glitch was more likely to happen when the SNES was warm/hot. I think it was in Dragon Quest 3. I remember some speedrunners using hotplates to warm up their console to make the glitch more likely to happen.

EDIT: oh, that was NES, not SNES

The obvious implication of this is that modern emulators and FPGA devices may now be more accurate than original hardware. Weird!

it seems to be barely noticeable? it's not like I play my SNES a lot, but would hate for the amazing music to be ruined by this over time.
