Super Smash Bros. for Wii U Miiverse Update Thread XVI

Guys. Stop for a minute.

And think.

This roster is incredible. We have a boxer, a dog, Bowser Jr, a fitness trainer you never knew you wanted, a dick shulker, legendary cheese, the blue bomber himself and more.

This roster is definitive, so far as the best roster in a fighter.

Thank god Toon Link, Little Mac and Metaknight are part of the starter roster!

It is not definitive without Ice Climbers

It is literally perfection with them.

Bonus points for other cut vets but with Ice Climbers I would be so happy

Now that all the characters have been unveiled, (barring Spainkiller's source, I want to believe) I have to say how very satisfied I am with the roster. Between out of nowhere surprises like Duck Hunt Dog and Wii Fit Trainer, characters that I expected and look like a ton of fun to play like Shulk and Little Mac, and ones that I'm not familiar with but am anxious to try out like Robin and Greninja, this is bar none the best roster for a Smash Bros. game.

1. Shulk
2. Mega Man
3. Duck Hunt Dog
4. Little Mac
5. Rosalina
6. Greninja
7. Pac Man
8. Robin
9. Palutena
10. Bowser Jr. (really, only for the Koopa Kids)
11. Wii Fit Trainer
12. Villager
13. Mii Fighters
14. Lucina
15. Dark Pit

(But I'll still miss our lost veterans.)

Roster is really good imo. So many fun newcomers. The hype got the best of me and I had to change my avatar's beanie to captain's helmet.

You're docking a point from the roster because it has too many characters? The effort to keep these characters as alts compared to roster slots was so minuscule I'd rather people dock points because Alph isn't a roster slot, not that three characters (one of which is a beloved vet) should have been cut and added as costumes.

I welcome their inclusion into the game, the problem is their placement on the character select screen. They should be alts, not made to look like three more unique characters when they really aren't.

Fuck it, I'm just gonna put it out there:

(And I'm not saying this to troll fans or keep the hype up or whatever.)

I have a source who has been right about previous leaks and has worked on the European localization of the game. He says he has definitely seen moving models of Dixie, Ridley, Chorus Men and Mewtwo in the game and he's still confident that these four characters can be unlocked by linking the 3DS version to the Wii U version.

Now, I know how outlandish this sounds, and being a game journalist myself I'm taking this with a grain of salt myself, but we're talking about the guy who told me about the Bowser Jr. alts immediately after the ESRB leaks and has never been wrong about other stuff as well. Plus, the whole connectivity thing makes far too much sense, if only to get fans to buy both versions. *insert itprintsmoney.gif here*

Again, I swear on my soul that I'm not trolling. Time will tell. I thought Ridley was never gonna be in, but hey.

Okay, how well do you know him? Because I'm not entirely sure about that since people found out about Bowser JR rumors way before ESRB leak.

So the custom moves are mostly unlockable? (As per a recent pic of the day?)

I hope they're not totally random like trophies or stickers were. Would be annoying to unlock.

They're all unlockable except for Palutena and Miis, you don't even start with one per character or something.

After I've unlocked all characters tomorrow it's what I'm going to be spending all my time on doing so I can write a short guide about them all, not even going to bother with online yet, give people a chance to brush up on their skills know what I'm saying?

I don't know about you guys but I greatly appreciate the return of Dr. Mario if only because I knew that was the only way we were getting the old drill spin Dair and Tornado down B on Mario. Given the way they were handling custom moves that was my expectation when the roster leaked and I couldn't be any happier about Doc's inclusion -- it is a good solution for people who still (somehow) may be fond of FLUDD (even if it is, objectively, a terrible move) and those who preferred the tornado being on Down B.

Dr. Mario > Dark Pit > Lucina for me in terms of how the clone additions rank. Doc has the most visual differences and that's damn good for a clone in the time they probably had to make him happen.

I really like the roster. Most of the newcomers have some unique "gimmick" or style that set them apart from how conventional smash characters are played, I am very excited to try out all of them
but only main Shulk

All customs are unlockable. They are rewards for SP stages and are dropped by enemies in Smash Run.

So.. Yes, if they are completely random, and you can get ones you already have, it will be as annoying to get all of them as stickers were in Brawl :p

Good thing I don't care about customizable moves

Too bad the stage roster sucks.

Didn't Jose tease there'd be a character reveal on the IGN stream?

Regardless, between Treehouse & Niconico streams, I can imagine a CGI trailer announcing one of the newcommers being revealed.

Doc isn't too far from Ganondorf and Falco, as far as uniqueness is concerned. He got the treatment he would have gotten had he been in Brawl and was mildly "de-cloned"

Why do you want less characters for no gain what so ever?

Despite my own personal dislike of Dr. Mario
due to being defeated by Doc players too many times in PM and Melee
, I agree. Dr. coming back is easily the most justifiable of the three superclones, if just for the Mario Tornado.

Dr. > Lucina > Dark Pit, because at least Lucina having a copied Marth moveset makes sense for her as a character, and at least she still has her own model. Dark Pit is so... tremendously lazy, and I can't help but feel that the time put into giving him his own Final Smash could have been spent on, say, Toon Link or Falco's.

Question! Now we've seen the whole roster, which three are main material for you?

1) Little Mac
2) Toon Link
3) Robin

Robin is just damn cool, Mac is a ground demon, and Toon Link is my buffed little guy from Brawl. <3

Personally, my guess is that Sakurai and the team originally wanted to include Ice Climbers and Chorus Men, but had trouble with their inclusion thanks to the AI. (Although I don't know what makes them so different than Rosalina/Luma). They didn't want the roster to be two characters short, so they brought in Dr. Mario and Dark Pit towards the end of development to add in and pad the roster.
