Super Smash Bros. for Wii U |OT2| Only Game Where You Can Beat Up The Duck Hunt Dog

Lol, why is there an age limit? Do they consider the tournament to be gambling or something? 0_o Normally I only see the restriction when tournaments are in a bar or casino or something. Strange.

It sounds like you already have a lot of the right mindset down: don't expect to win (not to say you can't, I don't know how good you are). Go there to learn and to have fun. Ask people for advice, make friends, and play as many matches as you can get a chance to.

I think the age restriction is to avoid any weird scenarios that might occur...like having some 10 year old with his mom in the corner facing off against some 40 year old neckbeard. I believe they had a Smash tournament for U-18 a week or two ago, but I can't remember.

If you can follow the trip you can probably get a free dropkick or a yolo Bowser Bomb if you react fast enough.

Or just another fortress or Jab Trap.
Sometimes I have had this happen (I think - I should have saved the replay):
1) Fortress.
2) Opponent is tripped on the last few hits of fortress, becoming invulnerable.
3) Enemy recovers from trip state before I recover from fortress.
4) I get punished.

It has only happened once in all my matches, but I think it's possible based on that experience (I think it was with Nabster in our ranbat matches).

You shouldn't be able to get a fsmash off of the trip, because your opponent has full recovery options after tripping. Using an oki attack should beat it clean. I usually just go for another Fortress when it happens, since it will beat all wakeup options.

So am I. Turning old sucks.
I am cool with it. I like my job and such.

My grabs always miss, can you guys give me some tips? I just can't seem to pull off grabs consistently...
Why are they missing?

Well, it works both ways my friend: you saying you're 15 conversely makes me (currently 25) feel super-old, lol. Get some sleep! ;P

The tweet responses to the Smash 4 EVO announcement are just terrible, Melee fans are so sad.

Only 15? =O You're just a babi
Eh, sorry guys but I meant "15 years playing Smash." I'm actually 18, and I really think my sleep issues are throwing off my game as of late. '~'

Maybe someday I'll be able to drink with you guys, but for now I'm content smashing with you all. :)

I have never been able to grab anyone reliablely, but with attacks I'm fine

Right, but I think what he's asking is what specifically is going wrong? Is your opponent reading that you're about to throw and evading? Are you grabbing too early on a dash grab? Too late? Are you trying to shield grab but overestimating the range and whiffing?

On the discussion of age, I'm not that old, but I've found that boxing and MMA has really kept my reflexes sharp, and my general day to day work in the labs keeps my mind sharp. Now while not everyone has a lab in their backyard, I always recommend picking up a combat sport to really keep your body young for longer. We've got men in their 60s with us at the club who have more endurance, strength, and dexterity than usual 20 year olds at the prime of their youth.

I see Japanese players just don't count any more huh

Where's that? =P

More seriously, I don't follow the Japanese scene so I don't know of its good or bad players. I was addressing the list of names.

My problem is I don't know what's happening, I guess I'll try to figure out what's wrong with my grabs but for now I just can't time it right.

It's hard to tell you what you're doing wrong without a visual, but I'll guess you're doing it too early, thus being too far away to grab your opponent. Just grind it out in training, and see what your range is.

Are you using the shoulder buttons to grab exclusively or mixing it with shield grabs? "Shield + A" is a great way to land a counter grab (block their attack, then grab them out of shield before they can react).

Works better with some characters than others. Pac-Man's grab game is going to be weaker just because of how slow it is.

Well, I'll throw some stuff out. Let us know what sounds like it might be relevant, if anything. Someone else can probably be more thorough.

Two ways to grab: the grab button (z) and shield + attack (R + A)

Running grabs have some properties different than standing grabs, and usually feel like they have shorter range. On the flip side, you're moving while you do them, so you have more effective range covered. If that makes sense. If you do running grabs, try to do them a little early. I have trouble personally landing running grabs as Falcon, since the timing is earlier than I expect. Watch videos of your character to see the timing. Who do you play? Are you doing grabs from run or walk or shield?

One of the basic systems of the game is that shields beat attacks, grabbing beats shielding, and attacks beat grabs. You have to be in very close for a grab, so be careful if you expect them to put out a hitbox. Shield grabbing helps here. If you hold up your shield, when they get close and hit it with a move that has lag, press A to grab them. When you're wanting a grab from your own offense, try to condition them into expecting an attack, then throw out a grab instead. A common example of this (that doesn't always work because people) is to try coming down from above with an aerial. They'll shield and punish. If you then fall without doing the move, some people will still be waiting to get hit, and you have a shot at a grab.

But grab > shield is of course, not as simple and happy as that. Grabs can also be dodged from shield. While in shield, opposing players can dodge in place or roll to either side. In both cases, the solution is basically to change your timing. If they keep spot dodging, you can run past them and pivot grab, or run in from of them, shield briefly, then grab if they dodge. Overshoot/undershoot if you expect the roll.

Also be on the look out for slow attacks in neutral. If you opponent is fishing for Fsmash or something and you're close at all, a lot of the time you can run in and get a grab.

Thanks you guys so much.
My grab button is mapped on Y. And I play Shulk and Rosaline. Running grab with Shulk is the hardest for me. And while I can grab CPU opponents just fine, I find it very hard to land a grab in one on one. I would try to grab them, fail, try again and get punished. I'm checking out one on one vids on YouTube, and it seems that they can just walk right into a player and grab them, which I have a hard time figuring out how to do myself. The only times I can grab people is when they make a mistake and I'm close enough to go in for a punish, or somehow they magically land within my grab range. So I'm really not using grab enough. I've been practicing boost grabs and it seems to be a lot better than dash grab but whenever I'm on wifi, grabbing is just so hard to land.

Speaking of grab buttons; of course this is 100% personal preference but imo there's no point in having both facial buttons jump, so I've mapped one of them to grab, and recommend others to try that out too :)

Also when I was watching a little bit of a tournament some time ago I noticed a lot of players mapping the jump to one of the shoulder buttons as well. I didn't get why one would do that at first, but then I realized it's so that you can attack instantly after you leave the ground. Makes Jigglypuff way easier to play, for instance, as you can pull the c-stick immediately after pressing the shoulder button; making it not necessary to move the thumb.

Man, I'm seriously considering going to EVO this year with two Smash games there (along with a couple of others). I just need to figure out when to book my flight because it seems a bit expensive at the moment from where I am. `-`

I'll definitely be practicing Smash U/Melee a lot if I do end up going.

Already planning to go. Definitely going to be entering in Smash Wii U (along with Marvel, Persona, MAAAAYBBEEE Melee and Xrd). Always wanted to go to Evo; having all these main event games is certainly giving me the motivation to go this year lol.

Haven't played Melee in years though; hope my P:M knowledge helps >_<.

Sure. Add me. NNID = Shamrock7r]

Will be on in a sec. Gunna take the dog out to use the restroom

We've played before, so I've got you :) I'll host?

Hey Twilt, you're in Toronto right? Do you happen to go to any of the Smash tournies?

Unfortunately no. I'm always busy with work, and I don't have a vehicle available to me all the time, so finding the time to go out to tournies is really tough for me. I'm lucky enough to be able to go to Evo at all.

The Come Up was apparently near York University (which is like a 20 minute bus drive away lol) though, so maybe I should have went there lol.

Ahh, I see. That's too bad. I know there's a tournament at A&C coming up this weekend and I'm debating about going. Would be pretty cool to meet up at one of them though.

Good games, Shamrock! I'm still in awe at how well you control your characters and your reflexes. You really know what to do with everything I throw at you. I'm pretty stumped.

I really envy you guys who can afford to go to EVO! I wish I could, but the trip there and back, plus having a place to stay and transportation would cost a ton, let alone feeding myself and actually getting to play. Bring back stories if you go!!

So, um, does anyone here know how to Peach? She seems pretty fun imo.

GGs man. Sorry I left without saying GGs but I had to immediately run an errand. Even though your TLink gave me more trouble, I feel like your Lucina is overall better and you should really work on developing her, because you were doing some good stuff.

How many online matches have you played overall now?

No idea. I probably average about 1 a day. Some days I don't play at all. The days I do play I try and get around 2 or 3 sets in.

Finally finished up all my ranbats match-ups. Somehow managed to go 5-0, so now I am going to be in the bracket with players like Shamrock and Anonymous Tipster and go 0-X... xD

Just starting really making use of Yoshi's neutral-B today. It is pretty good, if I can actually get my opponent with it. I mess up a lot when trying to do the direction reversal, and I either do get it, or I accidentally do an egg roll. Anyone have any tips to prevent this?

All I can tell you is to keep practicing. I have no problems doing b-reverse chomps with Wario now and it didn't take long.

Try doing it like you would a reverse Falcon Punch if you keep getting side b instead

Thanks for the compliment Magius. I feel like right now I am really only decent with about 4 or 5 characters. I definitely want to have a better range than I did in Brawl.

I can play some. Can you host?

Yea but I need about 10 more minutes. I will host when I am ready. Just join when you are
