Subete no aware
The lone survivor of a catastrophe in an isolated research post is discovered. Let's just let him go because he says he wants to work!

Yeah that is some STAR Labs security going on at the DEO.

Is the DEO a public organisation now? They never really talked about if its status as a "super secret government organisation" had actually changed. Now that the President has acknowledged them as citizens has that just forced them to come out as the organisation that does all the alien-related stuff?

- Okay, so this alien bar is the new The Bronze/Jitters/Verdant/Talon/Caritas
- Alex is supposed to be in her 20s? Lol Okay. Not that she doesn't look good, I just wasn't aware they were trying to sell that.
- Feels like someone was inspired by The Thing on this one. Cool
- I'm so glad Alex's storyline got the proper amount of time that it deserved. The scene between her and Kara was really well done for this show. Kara is literally the last being in the universe I would go to for advice on sexuality though lol
- Guardian got a nice intro

So are they basically done with Catco? Sorta feels like it. All the principal characters are at the DEO, you even got James walking in there. Catco seems like it's getting phased out and they're shifting workplace storylines to the DEO.

This was a nice episode.

She's only a few years older than Kara - they were at school together - and Kara is 24 when the show starts.

We've covered this before, basically everyone on the show is playing 5 years younger than their actor. It's really unlikely Jimmy is supposed to be 36.

That was probably Maggie's idea of lightly.

Alex has thirty years of repressed sexuality bottled up, Maggie knew it'd be like dating a hormonal teenager, and Alex's reaction kind of showed that yeah that would've been the case. Like the relationship will almost certainly happen, but this seems like a pretty reasonable way to stall.

Pretty much. Felt like Maggie does have a thing for her, but also doesn't want to be her first gay relationship.

Also Cyborg Superman looks to be
the original Hank Henshaw
.

Some thoughts after tonight:

1) Kara and Alex's conversations felt really odd. Given Kara's personality, that first conversation with Alex about her sexuality felt really out of character. I totally expected Kara to just say, "Oh, okay, cool! You do you and keep me posted. And if anyone gives you trouble, you can call Supergirl." The scenes between the two of them felt like they would have been a better fit for someone else (Alex's mom? Hank?). The storyline felt real, but not a good fit for Kara. It seemed like they wanted there to be tension there that could be drawn out over multiple scenes, but I didn't buy it with Kara.

2) Does anyone get bored with the blunt topical messages of some of the episodes? I don't even disagree with their messages, yet I feel it's a sign of bad writing if at some point I find myself thinking "Welp, looks like this is the ______ episode." It just feels a bit too direct sometimes, and I don't really understand what they're trying to achieve with it. In this episode, I had my "this is tonight's theme!" moment when the researcher guy started monologuing about the environment at the DEO. I will say this wasn't as much of an issue in this episode as in others, though.

3) I liked that they did a "coming out for the wrong reason" story without having someone step in and say that that's exactly what Alex did. I haven't been too invested in Alex's coming out story, but I did feel the pain in those last scenes.

4) I'm starting to imagine a romance between Winn and James? I mean, it's obviously just a friendship, but for whatever reason, my brain went there while I watched. Guardiwinn?

I'm not one for shipping characters but I'll admit that in their last scene, I was feeling the chemistry there.

Winn and James have more chemistry than Kara and James ever did.

Alex's coming out just doesn't feel organic (oh god) they might've recovered it a decent bit near the end there but when you have a show on the same network like Crazy Ex-Girlfriend that handled a character's realization and coming out as bisexual amazingly as it did you have a pretty fucking high bar set to at least meet it and I don't think they did.

Keep in mind that Kara and Alex have known each other for like 15 years. That's long enough to feel like you know a person inside and out, and you don't just shake off revelations like that as if they were telling you the weather forecast. They definitely took it a bit far to manufacture some drama, but I don't think just accepting it immediately would have felt right either.

Poor Alex ;_; Feelsbadwoman

Drunk Kara was fun though. Needs more drunk Kara.

Guardian looks cool and needs the yellow in the future. Also, cannot wait until we get Mon-El's suit. Want to see how they design it.

Serious Sam is a wicked gahbidge series for chowdaheads.
Positives:

Liked "The Thing" inspired premise.
The Parasite CG was good.
Guardian had a strong beginning.

Negatives:

My main complaint is why is the show running through theses stories so quickly? Where do they plan to be in 10 episodes?

Alex's coming out story would have been better served if given some time to slowly build up. Show her relationship to Sawyer growing and do this in the background over the course of a few episodes. I liked what they did with it here in this episode, but it seems like they were rushing to the "payoff."

Similarly, Jimmy becoming Guardian has also just been too rushed. The only reason it really works at all is because Jimmy's actor already looks like a believable superhero. Hell, I can even believe the character's motivation, but it's just so sudden.

Lastly, I like the Guardian outfit, but it could do with some color and I don't like that you can see his eyes. If they hadn't revealed that he was behind the helmet, I would have been able to tell just from the eye shield.

I felt for Alex. One of my best friends is in the same exact situation, and I've had that talk with her before.

The episode itself was kinda blah. I appreciated The Thing vibes, and the parasite CG.

And I know I've missed out on the last few episodes, but it seems like Martian Manhunter is always either getting his ass kicked, or ends up on the ground after each fight.

Not really feeling Guardian though. Maybe it's that the helmet reminds me too much of Diggle's.

Finally caught up. I liked episode 4 more than 5, but 5 was still interesting. I think a while back I heard news that they were planning to make Jimmy a superhero and after watching this episode I hate that idea. Please don't try and make Jimmy important. Eww. Everyone does not need to be a hero.

So wait...

Two CW shows now have a character named Guardian... Arrow and Supergirl. When they have the teamup episode i hope this comes up.

To me, what would have made more sense is Kara being outwardly and quickly accepting but then processing it on her own (talk to digital mom or vaguely talk to Winn or James about it for help), and then maybe having one more conversation with Alex about it later. However, I suppose I see your point.

I do agree they could have lead up to it be better but I think this is part of the retooling of James' character in general. I think you're right though what makes this work and even believable is the actor already looks the part. Jimmy's history with Superman already helps since that's largely built into the character so it's easy to imagine him working with and looking up to Superman for many years already. Even in season 1 he wasn't one to run away from danger so that helps. So I don't think it's that forced to be honest. More sudden then anything (Supergirl is moving at a fast pace this season in general, all the DC shows are I think) but it's not unbelievable or out of character. I think there is a real signifcant difference between something happening suddenly/fast and something being forced.

This storyline is also significantly better then him just being the love interest as well. So I'm fully wiling to buy into it with all of those things being factored in. Not to mention it helps push Jimmy and Winn's friendship forward and I like them interacting more in general. Especially when there is a real back and forth between them as equals.

I do hope the Guardian outfit gets the blue and yellow color scheme to some degree. I imagine it will as this was just first test run of the suit.

As for Alex. :( The feels.

Guardian's suit looks really good. Why can't Diggle get an upgrade like this? smh

Kara Job-El. There's not an episode where she isn't getting trashed.

This was a really good episode, they're doing a really nice job with Alex. You really feel for what she's going through, and they're doing it in a way that doesn't feel pandering or like a very special episode of Supergirl.

What effect will white martian blood have on J'Onn? Is there a comics precedent for this?

I actually thought the Guardian stuff was smarter than I'd expected. Parasite can't siphon juice out of the metal exterior and shield I guess. I always disliked Parasite stories though - but this one was frankly interesting. Parasite shows us his Thing origins; the multiple mouths were surprising.

And a few LOL's at drunk Kara; Mon-El's choice of "employment"; and Mon-El's continued effect on ladies of all species.

I honestly might have preferred Wynn to become Guardian. It at least makes sense for his character more than Jimmy who has literally nothing in the show to do

Jimmy is ripped, I remember him from True Blood back in the day. I don't mind the transition to hero, personally. I think that it screams of the writers not knowing what to do with his character. So he's running Catco AND decides to become a hero? Why not just one or the other?

It's all just very abrupt. Loses love interest status, becomes CEO of a media empire, and is now a masked vigilante. It's like they're throwing ideas at the wall in the hopes something sticks. I'd rather they just go in one direction and really try to sell that as best they can

Oh God I forgot he was even in True Blood. I just wiped all of those Tara storylines out of my mind.

I've purged everything after Season 1 except the full and partial nude scenes.

It is the advantage of actually having an 'experienced' person in place with Berlanti. On the other hand, they did copy the coming out episode of Grey's Anatomy partially.

And his power isn't really related to his body strength, it is the suit. But they didn't really use it that well. They only had him fight for a second or so.

the coming out scenes were so genuinely well-done and acted. Probably the very best stuff to come out of the CW super shows coupled with all of Cat's best moments.

Wouldn't surprise me if the ending with Alex came straight from Berlanti's personal life. Got too real all of a sudden.

This episode was way too overstuffed. Between Mon El, Martians, Alex, Guardian and Parasite they really could've dropped a plot or two.

Definitely.

Though I can only assume Ali Adler influenced it the most being a gay woman (unless she's not on the show anymore)

I just took the plunge and basically binged the show.

I don't mind it, but Kara is a huge dork. Almost cringe worthy but jeez she's so adorable...it makes me sick.

If all DLC came tied to $13 figurines, I'd consider all DLC to be free

lol...there is no way Kara would have allowed that. Also he works for DEO - they need him.
