I'm really hankering for another all stars. Bring back Amanda, Parvarti, Rob, Coach, Russel, Little Russel, Yauman, Sabrina, Colton, Troyzan, etc.

No thanks.

I agree.
this has been the worst season and had the worst players of all 24 seasons.

Do All Stars 2 or Redemption Island style with someone like Colby, James, Amanda, or Yauman returning.
Though a Colby vs Jerri would be interesting.

ps. please god a different distinct location.

I agree.

Absolutely not. Redemption Island was just two seasons ago! You could have fairly easily predicted the winner from the very first episode (and many playing in Survivor pools did). With the "returning players" gimmick, it was very obvious that producers cast a disproportionate number of sheep who would do little but fawn over the returning players. I suggest going over the list of contestants from the last few seasons. This one has some great, interesting players by comparison. As many as I would like? No. But it's no RI or Thailand.

And let's not forget that the game isn't over yet. We're still not totally sure how the thing will play out.

I think one of the things that is souring so many about this season is that the editing was iffy. They focused a massive amount of attention in the early game on Colton - understandably, given his outspokenness and ability to control the game - but when he left, the game felt empty because we didn't have a good grasp on most of the remaining players. Then, in the last two episodes, the focus was on turning Troy into a hero, lionizing his seemingly sudden strategic brilliance and getting the audience to root for an immunity run (I sure did!). So he gets voted out, and another story line is broken.

But I totally agree with this:
ps. please god a different distinct location.
Burnett is in good with the Samoans after he helped out with tsunami relief efforts in 2009, which is why we've seen so many seasons there. But I prefer the non-island locales, like Amazon, Australian Outback, Tocantins, China, and Gabon.

Also, out of curiosity, has anyone ever submitted an application to be on the show? I have been thinking about it, and while I am sure I don't stand much of a chance, I figured I would still try, for fun. Plus it would be awesome to be on the show and (attempt) make some big moves.

I've been thinking about it. I'm trying to get into some kind of physical shape. I'm almost 38 and spent the last 15 years at a desk job being a couch potato. I'm 6'1 and last summer I got up to 275 lbs. I started slowly working out on September 1st last year. I'm now down to 225 lbs with my goal of getting to 200. When I first started I couldn't run and could barely walk a half mile. Now I regularly do 6-8 mile walks with no problem and can run a mile in 14 minutes. If I can lose another 25 pounds and get to the point where I can run a mile in 8 or 9 minutes then I'm going to apply.

I'll be going against studs half my age and would get destroyed in the challenges to the point where I would be an early target. My only goal is to be in good enough shape to hang with them. I don't want to dominate and make myself a target, but not so out of shape that I'm a liability. Plus, I want to look good for the cameras so I don't embarass myself or my family.

If I had to compare myself to any player from this season it would be Jonas. I'm likeable, have some outdoor survival skills, things I can bring to the group, but not much of a physical threat yet.

One of the sad truths about casting for the big three CBS reality shows (Survivor, TAR, and BB) is that as they decline in popularity, there is now a huge portion of the cast who aren't applicants; they're simply scouted at bars and clubs in the big cities. It's something that's frequently brought up by previous contestants, who would love to see more fans cast on the show, but it's a reality at this point and it's likely not going to change.

But good luck! And anyone considering it might want to check out Big Brother winner Dan Gheesling's book How to Get on Reality TV, which gives tips about going through the casting process.

Yeah that's a big obstacle to overcome for someone like me. I'm a middle aged Midwestern dad with no connections. The majority of the survivor cast each year is nothing but models, wannabe actors, and people trying to break into reality TV. That's definitely not me. But maybe I could get lucky after applying over several years. They do seem to take a small handful of just regular people every season, but I'm sure you've got to apply over several years to go that route.

Do you really want to subject yourself to that though?
Before you answer... think again then answer.

I always thought I wanted to be on one of these shows, but I'd flip out on BB if production meddled during my HoH run or something. I decided that watching and commentating is probably infinetly more fun than actually being on any reality show.

You're probably right.

The chance to play the game to see how well I would do is the appeal for me.

The reality is, the casting agents aren't looking for people who just want to play the game. They aren't looking for simply contestants for a game show. They're looking for people who they think will make for compelling TV.

Well, I guess the casting agents are all getting fired this year.

They should have been fired years ago.

Most of the drama has been fake and manufactured for years since they went to their current method of casting.

I've believed for a long time that any animosity you see between some of the contestants is played up for the cameras, and probably encouraged by the producers on location. You may occasionally get 2 people who have a real genuine hatred for each other, but I think for the most part, its all scripted in the way that reality TV scripts things.

Now they scout and find about 80-85% of the contestants from talent agencies or are found by one of the producers on the street. Only like 3 of the players tops per season now actually are fans that submit tapes.

I agree with this. The season has been all over the place. What else were they really going to do though? I'm not sure all of the editing in the world could make Kim, Chelsea, Tarzan, or Christina interesting.

All-Stars always turns out terrible. The original AS was the Boston Rob show, with all the interesting people being voted out early. The second AS was edited terribly into the Russell Show Part Deux which was also terrible. I'm honestly tired of seeing old Survivors. In the last 5 seasons, 3 have had former Survivors on them and those Survivors basically dominated the editing. I'd rather see a season of completely new players that are terrible at the game but still entertaining than a returning group of people who I've already seen three times.

There was an open casting call for Survivor in Atlantic City yesterday and I was there. I'd say there were close to a thousand people in line total to do the open audition. It's not that there aren't fans of the show willing to try out, it's that the casting department is lazy and would rather scout out beautiful, photogenic people for TV than actual fans.

On the other hand, I was in line with some people my age and we were talking, the girls had only seen like two episodes of the show, and one of the guys was only auditioning because it would be "good life experience" and he wanted to travel...at least he'd watched some actual seasons, though.

I'm not about to defend Survivor casting, but I do give casting setups a little slack. There are plenty of good posts out there about applying for a more generic show (ie: Jeopardy) and you learn pretty early on that "fan of the show" isn't enough to go on.

a. Looks: The show needs ratings and it's basically #1 in terms of reality shows relying on the least amount of clothing.
b. Medical: Gotta pass. Jeff has definitely mentioned various cases in the past of people ready to go but flunking medical for some reason.
c. Personality: Need anti-leif's. Willing to talk, persuasive, not a total wreck on camera.
d. Psych: Not likely to break down or flip out in an extreme situation.
e. Variety: Looks, personality, background...

I agree that they need fewer wannabe models, but I think if they casted just from fan pools the show might not still be on the air, either...

I usually like All Star seasons but Survivor has ruined that with the returning players gimmick now. They aren't going to get a new pool to choose from if they keep bringing back returning players. There is a reason why this season is better than the last two. All the big characters who are fun to watch have been in way too much now.

And really, if Survivor would just get back into mixing the tribes up quicker and longer we wouldn't have these dominant alliances take it to the end. Had the beginning of this season not been a men vs women I really think it would be completely different. And then if the two genders did align together post merge, at least it would be different.

Not a surprising episode in the least. Troy's only hope was winning the Immunity Idol. The girls, minus Christina now it seems, are locked in their alliance, with Kim being the proverbial head of the serpent(s). It's truly a shame because I feel like some awesome moves could have been made this game. Moves that would have put players like Troy, Christina and and Kat into a more secure final. Unfortunately though, Kim has pulled a sort of Rob and has her tribe all but worshiping her; its more apparent during the reward challenge where the group decision was to trust her with their life I believe, or something similar to that. It seems like we've known who is going to win this game for awhile now, but I think the women turning on each other as they figure out who the bottom is will help re-interest me, and others as well.

And I really feel with a better, more interesting, intelligent and competent group of players, Troy would do much better. Troy has had some great ideas for overthrowing Kim, but the others just seem to dismiss his concerns. Now, I am aware that we are given information from the editors, but even so, I still would think its fairly obvious that Kim is "cash money"; basically she cant lose if she hits the final three. Hell, even Troy brought up the fact that she is smart, and even scarier, likeable. And as we have seen on previous episodes, being likeable will send you home (ie: see Jonas). All the other players must realize Kim is outplaying and outwitting them; well Kat seemed to think she was doing that, but minus her, the others MUST realize how strong she is. Or are they really that foolish to think they are in control? I just cant see how any of the other players would realistically want to take Kim to the final three.

I did like Troy's goodbye to Kat though. If anything, hopefully it causes some drama with other girls wondering why he chose to say that to her. Time will tell I guess.

I just watched the last episode and this is basically how I feel. So much potential for great moves being made and no one does anything. I don't know how these people can't realize that the end is coming and there can't be 6 winners. They're all basically giving Kim the money.

I really don't think I've ever seen such a dumb cast before. None of them make any good decisions, and when they finally do, it's just a little too late or they are hampered by the decisions of others. I wanted to like Tarzan when the game started, but I wish he had never been cast. He's a giant waste of space who constantly gives Kim a vote. It's like giving anyone who tries to win a handicap against her. They probably could have made a move if they had someone other than Tarzan around who actually wanted to play the game. They all seem to think that they are the third person and none of them will even entertain the thought that it *might* not be them.

So frustrating. I hate seasons like this where the entire tribe essentially hands one person the check for a million dollars.

It's not so different from when Boston Rob won a few seasons back. Nobody ever made a move to stop him, because everyone believed that they were in the finals with him.

The main difference this season is that Chelsea may be well-liked enough to poach some votes from Kim. (Though how the remaining players feel about each of those two could change between now and the finale.)

I guess maybe it's also like China, in how Todd and Amanda ran the show without much opposition, and we finally found out in the finale which of the two had the best relationship with the jury. (And of that season's final three, Courtney actually beat out Amanda for second.)

If Kim makes it to final tribal counsol, she will win hands down. There are no threats. Take her out now, or lose.

I'm wondering if Kim will lose votes based on how she has been playing. She has blatantly lied to several people who have been voted out. It seems that people tend to vote in favor of people who have played honorably. I could see Chelsea getting jury votes based on that. I'm not a fan of Kim. She seems to have this ego since she is running the game, but in all honesty, I think anyone who isn't borderline braindead could run it just as well. Unfortunately, it seems most of the remaining survivors aren't too far from that.

Yeah, that's why the next few episodes will be interesting. I'm guessing that Sabrina and Alicia both think they're in the final three with Kim and Chelsea. Tarzan may have made some secret deal with them to go to the finals (or, as a one of the extra scenes at cbs.com suggested, he is Alicia's puppet). And I think Kat probably blindly figures she won't be voted off at any point, either.

Assuming Chelsea and Kim are two of the final three -- and it's hard to imagine otherwise -- at least three of those other four are going to be sent to the jury, and they'll be pissed. How they're sent there could well determine how they vote for the winner.

(Christina has no plan and no allies, so she doesn't count. We've been given little clue as to which way she'd vote for any of the remaining people. Maybe for Alicia, who's been both the meanest and nicest to her, as far as we've seen.)

I've always found it odd how the contestants freak out after not seeing their friends and families for a whopping 30 days.

Definitely she's having sex with her cousin. Here comes the challenge where the person always gives up seeing a family member so the rest can see theirs. I'm sure it will happen again.

Wow guess they didn't do the trade for everyone else deal this time. Kim has this game won. It's not even a contest at this point.

Was anyone expecting Kat to do something smart? Especially given that she's got her snuggle buddy and this was her first challenge win?

It's foolishness to expect Kat to do something smart under normal circumstances.

UGH! Stupid KAT.
Probably her last day there.
I doubt it. Kim wants Kat around as final jury fodder. Hence her emphasis on "damage control".
Sabrina is in her crosshairs.

I hate these family visit episodes. Contestants cry as if they just got released from the Iran hostage crisis. It's been three weeks, give me a break.

It's been a little longer than that. 4+ weeks on the island and they spend a fair amount of time (a week or two) in sequester prior to that.

Hey, I'm a huge fan of Survivor and haven't missed an episode's original airing in two seasons. However, I'm currently out of town and staying at a friend's house with no TV. Do I have to wait until after the episode airs to watch on CBS.com, or is there somewhere online I can legally watch this episode as it airs?

I know that sounds far-fetched, but I'm desperate to stay on track, and this episode is going to be (in my opinion) great.

Thanks.

Still not a big deal.

Kim's got a nice stache going on.

Kim's definitely winning. She's strong at the challenges, the other players are idiots, and she still has an immunity idol noone knows about. She's got this in the bag.
