Sword Art Online: Hollow Realization |OT| - Just living in the Database Wow Wow

FYI: the game has unadvertised PS4 Pro support. I just went into town and it's 60FPS, it was 30FPS on PS4.
So I wasn't just seeing things? When turned it on yesterday to take that Super Armor video it seemed to run surprisingly better in the town.

Thanks for the tips Parakeetman! The fact that you can't dodge cancel is good to know. That got me in trouble last night against those dumb crabs you fight when you leave the city for the fist time.

Do I have any control over who I Switch with? It seems to be random, but I may just not understand it. Does switching allow me to get special bonuses or extra damage in? It sounded like you could do that to get extra stun or multipliers, but the tutorial didn't really explain it too well.

Regarding Skill Chains and OSS, how do I actually chain things together? I had it happen a few times yesterday and it definitely did a bunch more damage. It was awesome. Buuut I was not sure how I got it to work. I am using Axe right now, so I would combo and use my Sword Skill (Bash or whatever you start with), and sometimes it would go all SKILL CHAIN and the enemy would basically drop from full to nothing.

Speaking of Skills, the L1+△ default control is something about skill chains or whatever. Does that just entice my party to start using skills like mad to try and trigger chains? I noticed things like Chain 2 appearing over my head at some points. :|

Regarding weapons, I took the advice of Hasemo and took the SP Regen and HP Regen skills right away. Are certain skills locked to certain weapons? I suspect yes - I shouldn't be able to use some sort of Rapier multi-poke skill with my huge axe, but it's worth asking. I assume you can learn all the skills eventually, too?

Sorry for the newbie questions - the mechanics and systems in place are cool but confusing!

Sword Skills are set to that specific weapon. Other skills that can be activated can be used with any weapon type unless it specifies otherwise. Though there are some skills that for example you learn on the 1HS tree that requires a shield. So not having one equipped will not allow you to perform those skills.

Switch the only real control that you have is if you bring just 1 other member with you. Outside of that at times the AI will call to you to switch with them so you will know exactly who you will be switching with if you perform the switch action. Besides that with a full party do not think there is any way of determining who you switch with.

Sorry, but it is correct, at least for the 2HS and the last attack in the skill tree. You're denying it, but that's how I destroyed most of HNMs/NMs I fought in the second half of the game. Attacking through their AoEs, the orange shield effect flashing when they hit me and they get stunned, because the ultimate 2HS sword skill is really long with multiple hits. Maybe it's just that special attack? Who knows, its description just states Super Armor, as you can see in that video. I don't think I've tried it with shorter sword skills.

I even recorded a short video where you can see Agil getting hit and me just powering through.

Hyper armor is just temporary invincibility, a completely different thing.

You can take all the videos you want but even JP players state that Super Armor you will take damage and I have already confirmed it before replying to your post. Didnt bother going past 2 weapon types but already the Axe and Scimitar types you will take damage during Super Armor. Those were skills that do multiple hits and you can take damage in the middle of the combo. I set myself up on purpose so that an enemy attack would hit while the combo was going through and took damage during the test sessions. Super Armor apparently is supposed to also negate the effect of potentially getting stunned by the enemy. Didnt bother with the short Super Armor sword skills as its not those which you have to really worry about getting interrupted with vs the longer multiple hit ones.

It was similar in Hollow Fragment with how Super Armor worked. And figured the devs were not going to change it up for this game also, which they didnt.

Hasemo

(;・∀・)ハッ?
Well, it's a fact that you don't take damage during that skill, as you can see on the video. Maybe it's an additional effect, who knows. It just says "super armor".

Edit:
Okay, mystery solved. Looking at the details on the skill list, Calamity Disaster (the 2H Sword skill in question) gives you a 100% physical damage barrier for 15 seconds. That explains why it didn't work on the beam from the monster in question - I thought my timing was off.

so, how's the game son far?
i watched the anime but never played any game

If you enjoy Action RPGs you might have a good time with it. Also are a fan of the series as the story bits are a bit long.

Though there is a lot to learn with the game and the game itself does not exactly teach you a lot of the finer details with the various game mechanics.

If you are curious what the game looks watch the videos in the OP.

I played a lot last night...Like 4 hours worth. The game is just so much fun to wander and kill shit. I am starting to learn a little bit about how to take advantage of combat switching and skill chains, but it's still a bit of a crap shoot. I took a few new skills and have been enjoying them. I'm trying to understand how EX skills work (I took Healer because HP management is apparently crazy important since AI isn't that smart).

Regarding the whole relationship stuff, how necessary is it to engage in? And do I have to do it with EVERYONE, or just my main party? It seems like it takes a while. Also, I've just been talking to random player characters around town but don't know why. I thought I read you could invite people to your party, but I'm not sure how to make that happen.

Oh and is there a good list anywhere of where I can find drops? My axe is fine and all, but I'd love to get a new weapon. And I'd love to upgrade my current, but I have no Iron Ore. Also the translation in this game makes me laugh - lots of glorious typos!

quoting myself feels weird but anyway, here's what I posted yesterday about switch, guess you missed it.

About the switch option, select the one you want to switch with, with dpad up/down, there's an arrow showing who's selected on the left of the party list.

I think selecting an AI friend that way also works with the R2 feature

It definitely works for the R2 praise, and the whole time I was playing I was under the impression that the selected partner will be the one who will Switch with you. I'm too lazy to check now and various Japanese site don't describe that part of the feature.

Update on the DLC issue:

Apparently if you got the Vita bundle that gave you the PS4 version, it seems you can no longer download it from the store. I now get a "Add to Cart" when I look at the bundle page. Download list seems to work atm.

I was asked about that and if I got the PS4 version from the Vita bundle. Replied yes ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Wait yeah totally stupid of me to not think of the obvious with whoever is selected is who you will perform the switch with.

In this game I rarely use switch anyways. As most of the standard enemies can be totally destroyed before even having to bother. Outside of when the AI does a callout I dont use it. On the harder NMs the AI partners are usually dead so thats the other reason why I dont bother with it as much as how it was a main feature in Hollow Fragment lol

Indeed. But I'm not the only one that has written to support about it. I still have the games on my account, just that I can't download them from the store page.

So I haven't played any of the Sword Art games or watched the anime. Would I be totally lost, or would I be able to get the basic gist of things?

Also, I've read that the game assumes you're Kirito, even if you customise your character. If I make a lady, would she be referred to by her proper gender, or will everyone be referring to her in the masculine?

In terms of who the characters are and their relationships, yes.

You can watch up to episode 14 of the first season of the anime if you want. You would definitely enjoy more their interactions.

I was in the same boat. But I did a free month of Crunchyroll and am hooked on the anime now, ha. Definitely worth your time to check out the show and see the backstory on these characters simply because it gives some weight to all the dialogue surround "surviving SAO".

Is the season pass worth it?

No idea. Since the content has not been created yet so we are not sure whats going to be exactly in it.

Honestly Id say you could skip it and wait to see after it comes out.

Since you never know if you will get bored of the game by the time it does. In the mean time at least there will be the free content update eventually and the main game has more than enough content as is.

How do I get upgrades to my weapons? I found good sword after killing that big boat in the first area, but I want an axe, ha.

just one thing , how long the conversations in this game ?
dont get me wrong, i'm an JRPG gamer since long time, and i'm used to this kind of

conversations, but after playing ar nosurge lately, i was fed up with how much they talk, it was boring in a strange way, i couldn't give any damn bout the plot

here we've dating? so i should expect something long, but would it be as bad as ar nosurge ? that what i'd like to know

The dating stuff is optional, and the conversations aren't nearly as long as Ar nosurge, at least from what I've played of this so far.

So the crab NM in one of the first few areas is just tearing me up. I'm level 11. Am I just terrible or is he supposed to be that hard? He takes out like half of my HP or more from one swipe.

Also, how do I go about upgrading my gear? Are drops the best way or should I focus on the smith?

And is there a good description of what each stat is for any why you'd want to focus on it? Like AGI, DEX, etc.

NM are supposed to be tough, they're named monsters, elites.
If it's a level 15, then you'll need a group at least level 15. It's possible with less, but it'll take more time. But sometime it's worth it, if you want the weapon in the red chest. I think the crab reward is a dagger. And don't worry, you can come back later, they respawn anyway.

Ok - I'll revisit later. I've taken out a few other NM, but the crab me skeleton I found were doing mad work on me haha. It was just a shit show.

Dying has no negative impact, right? Just have to run back to where you were?

I found that crab to be harder than even the next few NMs, because of his weird attack pattern. The reward from his chest wasn't even that great, ha ha.

I can't figure out when to parry or dodge. Once I can take more hits I'll try again.

But I just killed some NM Lizard Dragon King or whatever and then a NM Bug of some sort. They were higher level and not as hard, ha.

I'm finding that I get ADD on weapons. I got a sweet 5* Katana from a chest from that Bug and I want to use it now, despite having invested a bunch of SP in 1H Sword and Axe skills. I suspect you can eventually max everything, so at fine to jump around. Right?

E: I am seeing what people complain about with the AI. I have seen them literally stand and do nothing for an extended period of time. Just blank stares. Maybe they're better once you train them...?

Against the first boss, it's even worse, the other AI groups start walking away from the boss sometimes, just like when they fight against NM and aren't strong enough, they just leave.
Fought the boss last night, even got last attack bonus, but that AI haha

Got the collector's edition but seems Amazon.ca doesn't have pre-order codes for this :(

Is the DLC cross-buy? So if I buy the digital Vita launch bundle, do I also get the PS4 versions of the pre-order costumes?

Also is the difference with Launch bundle and Deluxe Launch bundle is that the Deluxe just comes with the Season Pass?

The Preorder DLC and Season Pass seem to be Cross buy.

And yes, the season pass is the only difference.

It just occurred to me that I haven't even looked at the item shop yet, but are there Teleport Stones in this game? It's kind of a pain in the ass to have to run all the way back sometimes...

The previous game had them, though if I remember correctly they were quite rare. Thought this game at least gives you those checkpoint stones which allows for teleporting back to town. Though depending on your location some can be slightly far from each other.

Its why the JP players are constantly using the dash button while popping TP regen potions / skills to move around quickly.

Due to work and other whatnots have not progressed far enough to see if they appeared in the game yet or not. Bunch of other potions have though, which ups stats among other things such as instant recovery of HP / TP.

Long time PSO player here including PSO2

In the sense of being an action RPG with a good amount of skills to use then you should get the "PSO" type of fix. Although as a loot game, this is not the same in the sense of random loot drops from enemies defeated. As pretty much all the useful items come from defeating NM (Named Monsters) basically stronger enemy types who guard a treasure chest. After defeating said NM you can loot the chest which would hold a weapon or equipment. The stats on the equipment differs by quality level represented by stars. Higher the stars the better the quality. The same NM / Chest will contain the same item as before, so fighting again is basically to attempt to get a better quality level of the item.

There are also no classes in the same sense as the PSO series. This game you switch your weapon which changes what attack skills you have available. Leveling up weapons rewards you with skill points which you spend in the various skill trees for the weapons that contain active skills which do various effects such as buffs, healing etc. Though the weapon skills unlocked are only available for that particular weapon. Active skills you can use at any time as long as there is no equipment requirement such as some skills which require a shield to be equipped. A bit of reading and looking ahead in the skill trees is highly recommended so you can plan what skills you want to go after. Am not sure yet if maxing out all of the weapons will allow for you to unlock everything on the skill trees in this game.

This game there are also no ranged classes or magic users. So everything is pretty much melee based.

Watch the videos posted in the media section of this OT as it should give you a fair idea of how the game looks in action. Esp the MP related footage.

Teleport stones? I just open the map and warp between the stones or the main town with no items.

Also dash button? What? I need to get on that.

E: Didn't realize R1 was "dash". Nice.

Oh! Can you craft potions? And what are all these drops that I'm getting for? And should I could multiple copies of the same weapon or just trash lower star variants?

Is this game Pro enhanced in any way?

If you look in the thread, folks have said that they noticed performance increase. Didnt see anything officially announced on the JP HP patch section either.

You cant craft stuff in this game. Potions are bought in the store. All that junk you are picking up is either for quests or to upgrade your Weapons / Equipment. Be careful not to turn in literally everything you get to repeating quests, as mentioned some of that stuff is items required for upgrading your equipment. Though there is no way to tell what is needed for what ahead of time unless you go to the blacksmith and look at the equipment upgrades. Higher the rank you go with the item the more rare resources will be required.

Yeah the dodge button basically is dash outside of combat, though you will use up a good amount of TP constantly using it. Which is why its useful to go after TP regen type of skills or blow a bunch of those low lv TP items if you have extra cash to spare.

It is nice that they allowed for instant travel by the map also. Since yeah in Hollow Fragment it was always a bit of an effort to make it around the world since the world map was fairly useless till the large content update and checkpoint teleport stones were far and few in between.

Seems this JP user has recorded a bunch of PS4 Pro footage, though not sure if people will really be able to notice a real difference or not as we all know YT messes with quality a bit. Hasemo

(;・∀・)ハッ?
About that PSO2 itch, from someone who has over a 1000 hour in that game (I barely played any PSO1 though).

I'd say it depends on what you liked about the PSO2 experience.

What itches SAO scratches:
- Instant gratification for completing quests/killing monsters/numbers going up present in MMOs.
- Running around and mindlessly killing mobs - story aside, leveling/looking for equipment makes it a good podcast game.
- Playing an mmo with a party of NPCs.
- Active combat, as in your attack button presses, the timing etc. actually matter, you have to dodge, block based on enemy movement.
- Getting strong weapons.
- Difficult enemies, which require a lot of dodging and managing your SP.
- Anime story which to be honest isn't that great, but it's a matter of personal taste.

Itches it doesn't scratch:
- The combat is much slower than in PSO2.
- It's fantasy setting vs. a sci fi setting, but this one is a no brainer.
- Only stats on drops are randoms, but you get most of equipment drops from the same places every time. So don't expect that killing an NM boar will give you something different than a sword which is ~about this strong (I haven't seen huge variations on stats for the same item iirc). Don't expect some random enemy to drop a great piece of gear.
- Much less customization, both in regards to the character's looks and equipment models.

All in all, if you want some of more offline action-like MMO experience, SAO:HR is definitely the game to play.
...the FUCK? I had no idea you do it like that, I must have missed something in the tutorial because I just assumed it was like Hollow Fragment and that I had to use the Teleport Gate and Crystals to get back ._.
One thing to remember is that sometimes when you try to warp back to town from the map, the game will tell you you can't do that. For whatever reason, in some instances, warping through the gate still works. It's like they block map warping around areas because of story reasons, but sometimes the town warp also gets hit by the limitation.

Anyone know anything about what is going on with the game crashing and only being able to run if I hold up and move only the camera, not the left stick?
I've gotten about 8-9 crashes during my gameplay so far and my character slows and walks whenever I use the left joystick to turn him, but if I hold up on the left joystick and use the camera(right stick) to turn, they all continue to run.

I'm not sure if the PS4 Pro makes a difference with this or if it's just something that will need to(and hopefully) be patched?
