Tales of Arise |OT| Back in Our Good Graces

Well, the canon reason is that Shionne believe she must die to safe the world this she doesn;t want to forge meaningful relationship. Keep in mind she through she would die after the fifth lord. At point Shionne want to say it but can't. Noticed how it never happen again after the spaceship?
It’s just how repetitive it gets, it just doesn’t drive the plot anywhere when it’s done practically back to back and especially since it uses canned animations (of course Alphen has to hold his right wrist through half of them) it doesn’t get much across animation-wise that the last one’s did either.

But besides that; it just seems like there’s a bit of a disconnect between the skits and the main game, like it was done by a whole different development team, then quickly dropped into the game randomly by another person who just skimmed the script. Having the scenes and the forced skit after the first lord going (roughly to avoid spoilers): ‘I know you’ve always got my back so I’m not terrified’ to: ‘we’ve never trusted each other anyways’ within the span of a minute of gameplay can be a bit jarring.

As well as just plain reiterating what the characters just said…for the third time. Hearing characters point something out in a main cutscene, point it out again while you’re going to the next point, then getting the next skit with all the exposition saying the same damn thing they already just explained twice.

Edit: Just to make clear, just because I’m kinda roasting some of the skits it doesn’t mean I hate them all together. I like the majority of them TBH.

The combat is excellent all the way through. I wasn't completely sold on the demo yet, thought it was a button masher. But you can do some sick combos with the right setups and lay waste on enemies. Building up correctly towards a boost strike never gets old. Glad I bought it, and collected the platinum after 70 hours and still battling.

I would like to see some improvements to the franchise as well, though. Skits could be more dynamic, loading screens need to go (its clearly a remnant from the old HDD consoles). The pop-in is jarring, because I think the game is beautiful otherwise. I really liked the overall look of the different realms. AI settings could be better, I think they used to have more options for this in the past. Its also a bit of a pain to play a healer.

I've played quite a bit of these games and Arise is probably my number one. Its certainly the one I played the most and beat the quickest as I couldn't stop.

Still very much enjoying the game, but came across something egregious and inexcusable.

Beat the boss at The Wedge and the fact that it makes you trek all the way back down again and disable two fast travel points within this long ass dungeon is absolutely absurd. I just ran from every battle. Wtf were they thinking when they did that? And when you get to the bottom turns out there was no forced cutscene or story part they didn't want you to skip. Literally no point to doing that whatsoever. Stuff like this pisses me off. It was just a total waste of time. And I love to game at night before bed, so when I'm yawning and ready to call it a night, annoying shit like this drives me up a wall.

And Shionne is getting incredibly annoying. Tales does this in every game. There's a character that hides something from the party and the party sees them concerned and all game it's

"What's wrong?"

"Oh, it's nothing.."

Yeah its bullshit but you can use the teleporter on the 3rd floor, still need to backtrack half of the place. Its weird though that there isn't another one at the top. I mostly fell down and ran past everything I could. Took perhaps 5 minutes tops but its kind of baffling still. I believe they do this once or twice.

But theres fast travel points within the tower that wouldn't interfere with the cutscene you get outside the tower.
That i agree... it is a faulty system. They probably made the system where if there is cs at exit, no teleport. Remember after the 1st main boss there is no teleport too until you got to gate of fire?Also the Shionne
annoying thing will end soon

I guess I should write my final thoughts on the game before I forget about it next week with the release of Kuro no Kiseki.

Story was pretty basic not bad not good, it gets the job done, it has many reused topics from previous Tales games like racism which was done better in Symphonia and Rebirth IMO or the whole two worlds thing that we've seen like 4 or 5 times, so as usual nothing new here there is only one Tales game with a good story (Tales of the Abyss) so I expected meh and I got meh, I should point out the second part though, it really surprised me, I know that others are saying that it felt rushed and disconnected to the first part but I don't know I kinda liked it, the plot twist thrown reminded me so much of Xenogears part 2 maybe that's why I liked it actually, I like my mind blowing plot twists even if told rushed, then again a lot of people don't like Xenogears part 2 while I like it :unsure: I also liked the main villain, a lot of players are saying that he feels underdeveloped but to me it felt like a proper counterpart to Alphen and the whole being a slave vs being free theme.

Gameplay is good but it felt oversimplified for me compared to Zestiria or Berseria, I guess it was for the better though I remember people not being able to get into those 2 games because they felt very complex, one thing I do appreciate is that thank god they got rid of the dogshit equipment systems on those 2 games, going back to the much more simple crafting system in Vesperia was the right choice.

My only other complaint like I said before is that I didn't like boss mechanics, they felt too much like I was playing Monster Hunter, It was ok in the first few bosses but they got boring pretty quickly to the point were I was just spamming Regning Slash with Alphen to end bosses as fast as possible, not being able to stagger bosses really made me realize how much of the fun during boss battles came from comboing on previous Tales games, but overall still pretty good, it didn't bore me to death like some other battle systems do so I guess it was fine in the end.

I do appreciate all the QOL the game does, fast traveling from the start, save anywhere, being able to run lol yeah that wasn't a thing previously (and the Geoboard in Berseria sucked ass), it definitely felt like a JRPG that respects the player's time while still having a lot of content.

Music slaps, best soundtrack by Motoi Sakuraba since like Valkyrie Profile and I need the MP3s ASAP, the man outdid himself, the final boss theme is epic AF.

I guess the best thing about Arise is that it brings a semi-new formula to Tales that I think really works, in fact a lot of times Arise felt like a soft reboot of the frachise to me, so future games with more polished systems like combat should be even better, still I think Arise overall is really good and definitely one of the best games I've played this year if not the best (I can't quite decide between this and Ratchet and Clank)

I kind of agree with what you say. I almost flet that Neo: TWEWY is a overall better game than arise. I know i will get a lot of fl;ame for it but i have to say it.

Actually I finished that game a few days before Arise, the story was pretty good especially the second half but my problem was the combat, it was so meh and repetitive, I never thought I would miss the touch controls of OG TWEWY but I did.

I would personally say Arise is better overall, the story is better on NEO though.

Fair enough, the combat get old at the end but the battle is pretty damn smooth. The story in neo on week 3 is so good.
 
I just finished it this morning and had some time to think about it, and I loved the game overall but god damn does it has one of the worst endings I’ve ever seen: (avoiding spoilers other than the pacing):

Literally it’s: 3 hour exposition/lore dump with no gameplay, the longest dungeon in the game with the big bad, then cue the story climax and roll credits with one small mid credit scene with nothing really said….after 70 fucking hours of character building.

It’s almost like taking the last Lord of the Rings movie and rolling credits 20 seconds after the ring gets destroyed. Just…..ughhh.

The second half of the game has so much talking that it gets annoying. I mean you get a bunch of cutscenes, then you take one step and get another bunch of cutscenes, and then when you gain control you have to talk to each party member about what they thought about the previous cutscenes, which themselves are long skit like scenes.

I wouldn't mind so much but they're not saying much in these scenes either.

I just started this yesterday and have a few things to say:

I'm right now on the part after you beat the first lord and get your third party member, the story so far is pretty basic, nothing too much in that front. I usually try and not to overlevel and avoid mobs as much as possible, I just hate pointless random encounters in my JRPGs and have always tried to avoid them. When I got to the first boss I was lvl 7 and while he wasn't that hard, he felt very spongy, I died a few times to his BS last attack when he's on like 0 hp, I said fuck it and leveled up a bunch to lvl 12 and he was stupid easy so I don't know yet how balanced the combat really is. I'm really not looking forward to grinding levels for bosses but we will see what happens.


I'm playing on PC 1440p and whats basically 120fps locked during combat with some drops to 100ish in the overworld, everything maxed out on a 2080S, I've also applied a pop in fix for NPCs and environments which helps the game a TON. No issues there, I think it looks good graphically altho the watercolor style might get old the more I play it.


I have a big big problem with game design and pacing though, my PC has a SSD comparable to a PS5, loading is pretty quick but the amount of LOADING SCREENS is legitimately INSANE and it drives me nuts, it's world design straight off the PS2 days, let me give an example:

I'm in a town, the overworld is loaded, go into the INN, loading screen, Rest, loading screen, get out of the inn, Loading screen, there's no reason the interior of the houses/establishments shouldn't already be loaded into the game, it's not like these are big ass areas and a ton of assets need to be loaded, it's literally a couple structures and 3 npcs at most.

Dungeons are the same putrid stuff, get into the castle, loading screen, fair enough. get into the elevator, loading screen, again fair enough, go up some stairs, loading screens, open door, loading screen, enter another door, loading screen, go through another door, loading screen, cutscene, loading screen, enter encounter, loading screen, cutscene, loading screen.

loading screen loading screen loading screen it feels like I've teleported back in time to a place I never knew I wanted to never go back to :messenger_tears_of_joy: :messenger_tears_of_joy:



The load times are literally 2-3 seconds at most, but I wouldn't mind double or triple the time just to have a BIG area loaded up at once instead of interrupting gameplay so much, I hate that sometimes they will have you just go through so many loading screens for nothing in the end, it's also pretty stupid how they lock fast travel at some points. I know it's for story reasons but just let me fast travel close to where your stupid cutscene is gonna play at least.

You really don’t need to grind much in this. Generally with Tales games if you kill everything on the way to your objectives you’ll be in or around the level you need to be. Also by the time you get to the higher levels the level differences don’t matter as much, for instance I defeated a level 66 boss at level 50 without much difficulty (granted it took a while).

Not only that, but NPCs 1 meter away would pop up. The developers failed to even load the NPCs in small map that is not graphically demanding.
I know they are using UE4 which is used by many other developers. They have no excuses. They just are not technically competent.
Other than that, excellent game. I loved it

A great entry and for the franchise and a great return to form, i enjoyed every minute of it and I'm hoping the next game won't take as long.

Just started this today. The beginning was a little bland, but it picks up quick and has been great ever since. Combat feels good. Best looking Tales game by far. Runs smooth on my PC. A pretty bleak setting, but I am looking forward to meeting new characters and exploring the world.

Finished it. Really enjoyed it except for the typical Tales too much dialogue. Once I beat the game. I just started skipping all the sidequest dialogue and skits. They’re pointless and add nothing but cheesy 12 year old humor.

Always love getting the devils arms in Tales games. Alphen shot up significantly from his best weapon since I did a fair amount of grinding. Did everything in the game except all the trophies. Did all side quests, recipes, skills, owls, etc. the optional bosses in this seemed more difficult than recent Tales games, but maybe that’s just recency bias.

Overall good step in right direction for Tales.

Finished the game. I liked the story and the art, but wasn't that pleased with the combat. It's too mashy for my taste and the constant effects makes it hard to understand what's going on. They also need to reduce the amount of talking and keep the cutscenes succinct. I enjoyed the effort put into action scenes.

Overall, it was decent game.

Took longer then I wanted but I finally finished the game. I feel this game won't be as fondly remembered in a year or two once the honeymoon period ends. The story and especially writing is not very good. The second half of the game's pacing is way off and based off everything hyped up in game where you go and what you see doesn't match it. The characters are decent but I don't care for Law/Rinwell. The combat is fundamentally flawed and the boss fights are in the wrong game. The villain is a joke and the ending.... lol. The DLC is atrocious and all the costumes/customization were cut in exchange. Thank god for mods. The series still has the very linear dungeons, small semi open transition areas, and tiny one or two screen unexplorable towns. 3/5.

I'm glad the game sold great. Use some of that money to port more games in the series to modern consoles/pc.

I honestly just ignored the DLC entirely, with what they normally sell it was all likely stupid anyways.

But yeah…that ending still bugs the shit out of me. It’s like they lost all the basics of storytelling, and it’s especially hard when all of the first half of the game was nailing it. The two basics being: don’t hit the climax of the story and roll credits, and don’t try to tell more than half of your plot at once with a single elongated exposition dump.

I’d personally give it an solid, 8/10 the journey was fun enough, despite the rough landing on the ending.

This mainly only applies to higher difficulties since you can just face tank lower ones. The Tales of series has always been an action paced style but they wanted the action and slower weighted souls combat. Dodging and blocking are huge if you want to succeed here. But you can't animation cancel and you are locked into your next one if you press to many buttons. This leads to spamming the fast animation artes instead of using the full tree. There are also so many effects going on you can't even see half the time so you either say screw it and go all out or take a step back to see what's happening. The AI is extremely good at dealing damage but is terrible at avoiding it even with strategies. Speaking of strategies they ruined them by not letting you assign individual ones.

Most of this could be avoided by lowering the dodge window and needing ag to animation cancel. Boom. Skill based combat.

The final dungeon I just put it on story mode to get it over with. I will say they made almost every character fun to play and useful if you took the time to try them.

I was pretty pumped for this based on some trailers, but having never played a Tales game before I tried the demo and the combat just didn't jive with me.

I thought it was going to be more of a free ranging action RPG combat wise. The forced lock on felt super weird and clunky. Sometimes i just want to hit the guy next to me without having to toggle over a lock on selector.

Anyone else feel this way but get used to it? I still really want to play it I just dont want to regret the purchase if I cant adjust.
You can freely attack if you set controls to manual. You will still have a target locked-on, but you can control your character freely and attack in any direction. This is the main reason to use manual attack. Even the in-game help suggests this setting.

Has anyone found a way to make AI Shionne use her Aerial Artes? I would really like to make her use the arte that poisons enemies.
There is no way. Shionne does not have any artes to make her airborne and the AI never jumps. This is a huge oversight. I hope it is addressed someday.
So FF7 remake was complete garbage. Anyone else hate the remake but like this?
I’m with you. The FF7R demo sold me on the game. Little did I know, that was the best part. The combat is not enjoyable at all. I gave up shortly after the weird part on the motorcycles.

you can beat a lot of enemies under leveled. just have to prepare extra and extend the combos. time boosts to down and stop attacks. when you directly control you dodge almost anything. decrease aggro is very important for the spell casters.

If you are using more than a few potions, you should reconsider your gear. The game makes it fairly obvious what sort of enemy you will be facing in the area. Equip a few of your characters with defense against that sort of enemy, and you will find it much easier.

only ever platinumed a handful of games. and this is the 1st time doing it with a JRPG. found myself just a few requirement's away. organized information, fast travel with very short loading helped a lot.

better to set up the AI to use only healing arts and apply potions manually.

I am really enjoying this game. I love how every region is truly unique and you have no idea what will be going on between the Dahnans and the Renans. I enjoy the interactions between characters. It was funny watching Kisara scold everyone because they did not keep their appearances up. I like that the outfits you have are in all cutscenes. I hate it when games let you change outfits, but the cutscenes use the default outfits. I haven't enjoyed a Tales game this much since Xilia and I think the combat is the best that I can remember for the series.

I was impressed by the cel shaded graphics, but super disappointed by how last gen everything is animated. Reviewers said this Tales game has better combat than previous entries, but 6 hours in it feels basically the same as Vesperia. Maybe I shouldn't be playing it on the hardest setting. The battles aren't hard, but enemies take too long to kill and their move patterns are super simple.

The battles seem about right on normal difficulty. The initial yard trash is challenging when entering a new area, quickly becomes trivial, and the bosses are still tough.

The game continues the tradition of clearly being a last-gen game up-res’d. Zesteria and Berseria were PS3 games at PS4 resolution, and Arise is a PS4 game at PS5 framerate.

Not quite a fair comparison, Zestiria and Berseria we're two and four years into the generation respectively, way past the cross gen grace period, and looked way behind their contemporaries.

Tales of Arise is obviously a cross gen game, but during a time when 99% of games on the market are also cross gen, it doesn't come across as dated in the same way.

56 hours in and still haven't beaten the final boss, I do have the warp unlocked right before his room though. Just doing side quests and trying to get fishing up. I'm at 9/10 fish required for the 2nd rod from the guy but everywhere I go the fish I haven't caught destroy the og rod too fast to catch them, wtf.. Loved the game and don't want it to end. Easily destroys all the Tales games that came out after Vesperia. At first I didn't really like the CP system but once you get all the characters which is pretty early on you have enough that it doesn't really matter if you're playing the combat right. My characters were only 45 when we entered the final dungeon and I managed to get to the final way point only using 2 orange bottles. Not bad at all.

Down to just the two level 99 quests/arena fights. I was doing the quest one when the I got blasted for 9k ish by Indignation and wiped out... Considering that I was on Boss number 7 and 8 with no breaks between, I just set the game aside for now. Astria Ascending and Far Cry 6 it is, I will go back to ToA when I am less annoyed. Still a totally middle of the pack Tales game, definitely overrated to me.

get the rod from the training ground reward for Kisara's solo. and it's best not to press X when side pulling, and just use that time to recover.

don't target him at all and save him for last. develop a couple of fast spellcasting +40% accessories so the healers can help fast. and BG + 32% on Alphen and he will stagger the bosses often. an agro+defense+resistance for Kisara, control her and just block, let the others do the damage and sneak in a few recovery zone hits.

Yes, I don't get how they ink $16 for a boss battle is ok. Sure it has new gear but at that point the only use for the gear will be against future dlc.... SAO fans aren't very smart though so I'm sure it'll sell a ton.

I personally not really fan of SAO, if was against Haseo and Atoli from .hack//G.U. or Kite and BlackRose from original .hack series then I’m willing to pay.
