Taraintino not happy with Disney "'It's vindictive, it's mean and it's extortion'"

This doesn't exactly make Disney look much better. It just makes them look like they have made their bullying and strong arm tactics a company wide policy instead of unique to just Tarantino's situation.

Uhhh...what?

So everyone goes from "BUT TARANTINO HAD A CONTRACT :(:(:(", to finding out Disney technically had a legal contract in place that the Arclight may have signed first...so now you're saying "BUT THEY'RE BULLYS FOR BUYING THE SCREENS UP SINCE THEY CAN AFFORD IT FOR THE BIGGEST MOVIE OF THE YEAR :(:(:("

Come on.

Maybe have some sympathy for the cinema then?

Lol the Arclight is doing just fine.

The Hateful 8 is getting an extremely limited release in 70mm in select theatres - it's an old and very rarely used format (I think this is the first 70mm release since the 60s and there's only been 10-12 films ever made using the format).

This particular theatre was one of those set to play the 70mm version, so it is actually a pretty big deal for H8 to lose that screen(especially considering Star Wars will be playing on multiple screens in every cinema across the fucking planet).

This is in Los Angles, I've been to the Arclight a ton...if theres ONE city where this doesn't really matter, its LA. Theres EASILY another venue with a 70mm print. Yeah it sucks it won't be there for a few weeks, but its not like they won't show it. You'll just have to wait a few weeks to see it in 70mm at that particular theater. Might actually allow some more people to see it in the proper format.

Go see it in another theatre. I'm sorry, but it's a non-issue.

That article states that Disney had an internal policy of only agreeing to show the film in multiplexes that agree to their demands.

Nowhere does it state that Disney had a contract that preceded the one in place with Tarantino. That is purely assumption that you and others are using to try and hand wave away criticism of the company that is releasing your precious movie.

That hyperbole though, unnecessary and completely immature.

Nah I'm just playing around because Tarantino sucks as a person, great director though! I totally get why he's upset if they are literally breaking his contract. I just don't really care.

Thats fine, but the article I commented on shows this is not just something that is affecting Tarantino. Clearly Disney is mandating all theaters meet their demands or else. Hard to imagine other films won't be seeing a similar situation or that films in the future, say, during subsequent years, won't be negatively affected.

He talks about L.A. but the real shame is going to be in places that may only have one theater offering 70mm in the area and because of Disney's policy they are forced to show Star Wars on that screen for 4 weeks even if they had desired to show Hateful 8 for a week.

This year it is Hateful 8, maybe next year it is the next Scorcesse, Paul Thomas Anderson or Nolan film.

Yeah I get that if there was once place where this wouldn't have as big an impact it'd be LA, I just wanted to point out that the situation's unique for this film. Plus I really like the idea of reviving/celebrating an old format like that, so it sucks to see it getting steamrolled.

70mm (or more accurately, 65mm) has always been around, though still super rare, as this is only the fourth film in the past 25 years that has been photographed mainly on this format (the others being Ron Howard's Far and Away, Kenneth Branagh's Hamlet, and Paul Thomas Anderson's The Master, with rumour looming over that Anderson is planning on shooting his next movie again in 65mm). It's just the way the movie's shot and presented (Ultra Panavision, which implements a 1.25x anamorphic squeeze of the image) that hasn't been done since the '60's.

And yeah, I side with Tarrantino in this case. Disney has one of the biggest movies set to release, and yet they're spatting over just a single large format theatre? The folks basically defending this for the sake of Star Wars (and not because of whatever contractually related goings on, just Star Wars) are pathetic as well.

Why would you choose to release your film at the same time as Star Wars? He's only got himself to blame. Ep VII is the biggest film release in years, with plenty of heads up on its release date.

This close to release, both the cinema and the cinema going public will want Star Wars screens ahead of any other film.

The fact that there are people defending Disney only because they own Star Wars says a lot about them. I mean yes, it isn't very smart to release your movie next to Star Wars but, Tarantino isn't wrong on his part. A contract agreement is an agreement. Star Wars is going to make a Billion anyway so this was really a bullying tactic by them because all they care about is money.

I am constantly amazed at how people will trip over themselves to defend a company that makes something they like no matter how shitty the company is otherwise

Nice to see someone stand up for multi billion dollar corporation. In no way is this because of your preferences towards a specific IP.

This fanbase is trash.

Lol should've look back far enough to my posts in the various hateful 8 threads, but good on you for the Star Wars fan base rimshot?

Tarantino is a guy whose career is based on embracing his own puerility, to the detriment of what I think is an inner artist that could have been more, but at least he adds something distinctive to culture and makes entertaining movies. Star Wars is a soulless cancer of a franchise that is partially responsible for the death of the auteur movement in America and largely responsible for the descent of the American film industry into the lowest common denominator doldrums of the last thirty years.

Not surprised in the slightest... I'm sure Disney is seeing so much green, they don't even care.

Who cares about that? Are you a stockholder or something?

Also, not that it matters, but this isn't about releasig a movie a week after Star Wars. I'm not sure why people keep mwntioning that.
This is about a special limited screening.

It's weird people assume that there is more money in selling out a showing of Star Wars than selling out a limited screening your theater is built to do.

I own the Total Stock Market Index so yes I own Disney stock.

This thread just became really entertaining.

"Going out of their way to fuck me"

Yeah, maybe they had second thoughts when they saw your trailer and the movie looked like 2 night Lonesome Dove mini series. No one wants to sit through that shit.

Quentin the martyr. Everyones out to get him and his characters.
Hey, Lonesome Dove was a fucking amazing book. If you haven't read that shit, you owe it to yourself to do so.

And hell, the first miniseries was excellent too.

To those defending Disney, what do you think this theatre actually means for Disney? I mean, this isn't Arclight saying "sorry Quentin, we're going with Star Wars because we need to do more business at this theatre", it's Disney saying "play Star Wars or else".

Nobody at Disney actually gives a shit about this one theatre. The Force Awakens box-office won't be budged one iota for not being in that theatre. What does Disney lose by letting Quentin have it?

Disney has always been litigious, petty and hypocritical at the executive level.

The only issue I have is Tarantino's seeming idea that this is personal or about him at all, really. I'm not defending Disney, Star Wars, or the breaking of contracts, and I don't know the details of what other movies Disney has effectively sidelined, but the idea that Disney is out to burn Tarantino and only Tarantino, just because he's Tarantino, seems laughable. I get the feeling they'd have done it anyone who "got in their way" not just him.

But maybe I'm wrong and someone at Disney or the theatre really is out to fuck him over personally, but I do kind of doubt it.

I'm pretty pissed Seattle's own Cinerama won't be getting Hateful Eight till some indefinite time in the future after Star Wars. Seriously, I can see Star Wars anywhere- including dine in theaters with super nice seats and legit IMAX screens. I'm going to pick another theater over you for it.

But a unique, designed for 70mm only experience? I'm in. I'm not going to wait two months for you to finish your Star Wars run; I'm going to drive 3 hours to Portland instead so I can actually see a 70mm taking advantage of one of the only unique experiences for them.

I realize the money trade off still doesn't favor Hateful Eight, but they couldn't at least spare a day or two for it?

I mean, its pretty clear why. Does Tarantino think Hateful Eight was going to make the theater more money in the near term than Star Wars and that the Weinstein company will bring them more money in the long term?

A Tarantino film at one of LA's most famous theaters. I think the theater probably would be packed either way for two weeks.

In this thread I learned manny gaffers hate Disney. I mean it sucks the theatre went back on their deal, but I can't blame them for wanting to make more guaranteed money.

I agree 100% with Taraintino but let's be realistic.

The Force Awakens might become the highest grossing film of all time and any theater would be crazy to not run it for 2 weeks during schools X-Mas break.

That's what you glean from this situation?

I'll allow that the Sony hacks proved that corporations do vindictive things regularly. But I think that Disney loves money and prestige far more than it hates Tarantino.

You must go out there and defend some really shitty companies if that's the logic you're using.

I am in no way defending Disney because I own their stock. Disney can do what they want as a business and face the consequences (a handful of people won't see Star Wars because of this) The theater can do what they want and face the consequences (make more money but possibly lose a few customers wanting to see Hateful 8). Quentin can do what he wants and face the consequences (release a movie a week after possibly the known biggest movie of all time).

I will be seeing both movies in theaters.
