teaser of next-gen Madden and Need for Speed

These screenshots are bullshit. There aren't even PS3/XB2 GPU silicon die being produced yet. Projected screenshots = prerender = pure bullshit.

Wow. If they can pull it off, props to EA. Should be interesting to see what others can do with it. Should make games like Ace Combat 8 and Metal Gear Solid 4: Koala Tamer look even more impressive.

But I bet somehow the graphics for the GTA series will still look like they did in GTA 3. Rockstar: "We're going to pass on graphics for more gameplay... while the game itself doesn't look better, we have a 40 hour long mission where you work a full week at White Castle!"

1. I believe we'll see diminishing returns on performance to visual impact. I mean, does "The Increibles" impress people like "Toy Story" did? I suspect Half Life 2 is the apex of the performance to visual-quality ratio. Going forward you may need something like a 100x the performance increase to get a 10x increase in visual quality.

2. Revolution won't look like that... for obvious, top-secret, reasons.

He makes some very good points there.

"Imagine that the characters in a football will be capable of showing real emotion," he said, among other possibilities.

Characters inside the football? OMG!

Yup, the dead pigs squealing!

The worst part about that Madden screen is that those two models look nothing like McNabb and Strahan.

Teaser, not screenshots dude.

These are guesstimates based off the best case that the hardware is supposed to do. Any one of those features in that Madden teaser is doable with shaders as is the grass (easily actually) and the motion blur and the depth of field. I don't believe that they will be able to get them ALL into a 30Hz engine looking like that because when the reality of the architecture comes in and you take into account the physics, AI, sound, marketing BS, etc. you don't achieve the max theoretical numbers.

There is a difference in saying "create a scene that has 10 million polygons in it and render it out in Maya" and what we'll be able to get in games in the next generation. The generation after that however - all bets are off.
