I got a chance to take a quick look at the current Nintendo Revolution controller prototype today--but unfortunately, no chance to take pictures. At first, I thought it was a Wavebird.

That's because it looks just like a Wavebird, except that the GameCube face button scheme with the big A, small B, and X & Y kidney shaped buttons has been switched out for four small round buttons in a cross configuration, i.e. the traditional SNES/Playstation/Xbox setup. I believe the button color scheme used on the Revolution prototype is as follows: X (top) button = indigo, Y button = yellow, A button = green, B button = red.

Instead of the "Nintendo GameCube" logo in the across the center of the controller, it said "Nintendo Revolution," using the same GameCube font. The analog sticks were placed in the same locations as on a GameCube pad, as were the shoulder triggers. Keep in mind I only got a brief look at an image of the controller (5-10 seconds) and it was a top-down view so I couldn't see what was going on on the bottom side of the pad.

I was told that it'll evidently be wireless by default and no highly rumored special functions like gyroscopic technology or touchscreen pads were currently implemented or had even been hinted at by Nintendo. Also, "this is just a prototype, sometimes they change a lot before system launch, or sometimes, like in the case of the N64, the prototype was nearly the same as the final controller."

I realize this is pretty anticlimactic since the Revolution controller is being hyped as the super-secret linchpin of Nintendo's radically different next console, and here is it looking like a Wavebird with a different button configuration. Just remember, it's possible that Nintendo could still be holding back a lot of functions from the developers until later in order to preserve the shock & awe...

At least this should at least put to rest all those bogus rumors about prototypes people have seen at developers' offices with touchscreens, gyroscopes, hologram interaction, etc. As it stands, this is all developers have access to.

I should caution, this is only the PROTOTYPE that's currently out there. But:

o_O

So I guess the "Controller isn't the only way to improve interface" thing is true? o_O

It wouldn't be hilarious if true, it would be a relief. Whoever thought that the controller was going to have gyroscopic technology, a touch screen, or rub sensors is a fucking complete and utter moron.

Anti-climactic? Yes. But its still a (small) step in the right direction. Nintendo should have never dropped the SNES layout in the first place.

Nighttrain?

This would make a lot of people happy, as we KNOW it's the controller, seeing as they've told us it is. It being the revolution. So it would indeed have to be something Nintendo aren't revealing yet, but obviously it has normal button configurations too (which is why people will be happy).

If true.

Well, it would be par for the course for Nintendo's hype smoke and mirrors they like to play. I would be very satisfied if it did end up just this though, I really don't want a gimmicky controller and a touch screen controller or gyroscopes would have just turned me off from the Revolution.

What the FUCK, dude. Gyro is a logical next step in game control and has already been implemented very basically into GBA titles.

I hope this is true

It should provide much entertainment watching people backtrack on their claims that the controller will change everything.

i expect the rev won't be too different from PS3 Xbox 360, and what we have seen so far is just a smoke screen.

Nintendo always pack a lot of power in a small packet (Yes Drinky, please don't) in the home console.

Anyway Teddman, whats inside the controller?

How is gryo gimmicky on a normal controller? It's just added, intuitive control without having to use a finger for another analog stick. It's a logical next step.

well all things considered, if what teddman saw was close to what the final rev controller will be, its funny but confusing at the same time. Cause it still leaves the "what the fuck is the revolution" question unanswered.

Next logical step my ass. My friend spent $100 on a gyro mouse 2 years ago. The worst. mouse. EVAR.

Downloadable roms, that we all enjoyed at one point in time on PC, Xbox, or PSP.

Somebody needs to push our gaming journalists into toxic waste in hopes that they'll develop super-sensative hearing or possibly xray vision.

revolution: the ability to download nintendo's entire catalogue of past games. also known as, backward compatability.

No it's not. It would be a pain in the ass and stupidly integrated into games it shouldn't be. I have a test for you, go pick up a gyration mouse and pick up some games for your PC. Now try to play those games and come back and talk to me then. It's not fun.

damn, I must leave my job now, and the PSU of my home PC died >:(.

I think that homebrew xbox browser will be very helpful now :D

Like anything, poorly implemented it's going to suck. It's proven very successful with Wario and Yoshi, however and it would be done very well under Nintendo's watchful eye.

Tedmann, just out of curiosity, did anyone else see it with you? I assume it was an event for journalists? If so, will we see other people commenting on it?

Of course, there's the possibility that you're having a bit of fun with everyone, in which case, bravo :p

Maybe there was a little holographic pad thing on the controller that you couldn't see from a top down view? :D

I guess Teddman missed the hose at the back of the controler that attaches to your private parts. Revolution indeed. :lol :lol

Unless whichever one of Miyamoto or Iwata who said that the Revolution is the controller have outright lied to us, which I highly doubt, stop worrying anyone feeling let down.

How can you even tell if it has gyroscopic controls or not from an image anyway?

The fact that your friend would spend $100 on a mouse already speaks volumes about him. Implemented properly, gryo sensors could be a great addition to the normal controller layout.

anyway could they have a few different prototypes out there to keep people off the scent??

damage control has arrived :D

(if they wanted to keep it secret it would be easier to not show anyone than to show them a fake)

Well, that settles it.

The Revolution is gonna be Hologramal.
