Ten Minutes of Umbrella Chronicles Footage (Zapper Demonstrated + OMG AWESOME)

The game is meaty. It has about 4 missions with lots of checkpoints, lots of weapons, some of the best wii graphics.

Are you serious? I can probably imagine a max of 6-8 hours to finish this game at best. Charging about US$69.00 (Japan version), to me, is close to being committing a crime.

The "four missions" thing is misleading. Each of the "four missions" encompasses the areas and plot from an entire game. I'd agree with the eight hours estimate, but that's respectable for a light gun game.

Though $69 is too much, I'll give you that. Sucks to be you, I guess. :/

Well, I just realized a problem I'm going to have with the Wii Zapper.

I'm right handed, when I play gun games I use my right hand for trigger and left hand for support with the butt at my right shoulder, like a normal rifle. The Wii Zapper trigger is in the front, so that means I won't be able to hold it across my body like a rifle or even hold it like a normal gun. I'm going to have to keep it in front of my body at the center because I have to control with the analog stick with my left hand. I think I'd rather just do without it now, maybe I'll change my mind if I try it. Just seems awkward. :/

Biggest design flaw of the zapper, IMO. The non-trigger hand always feels like its in the way and has no place to go.

This game was uninteresting from the start. The gameplay is so uninspired. Point at screen and shoot whilst on rails.

I'm done with Capcom milking Resident Evil. I've already been the victim of purchasing Resident Evil 4, 3 times.

Personally, I like my gun games where I hold the gun with one hand. I am never a fan of holding my gun both hands. Even if I have to hold the gun with both hands, I use my left hand to just basically support by right.

This game needs to hit it in the next gear. Usually light-gun games at the arcades are always the most interesting to sit behind and watch for a few seconds when somebody else is playing. The fact that I was bored out of my mind when watching this should be a tell-tale sign.

The aiming seems to be a headache as well. The guy playing for the life-of him couldn't lay off a head shot. He was trying to do such at several occasions.

Furthermore, the game needs more blood, needs rock music, go for broke goddamn, playing rail-shooters should get your heart pumping not put you into a coma.

As for the positives, the graphics are slick, and playing through mansion of the classic Resident Evil but this time with the ability to bitch-slap zombies instead of being passively scared shitless should put a smile on anyones face.

I feel like this thread is Zeed and I VS everyone else.

The game ISN'T House of the Dead. It isn't an arcade quick-play lightgun shooter. I actually appreciate how the slower pace of RE games is carrying over, I thought the video made the game look like a lot of fun. It also looks graphically impressive, it would have been considered top-tier looking last gen.

I'm on this game on day one. This is the aim/point wii shooter to get this year.

Some ppl just dislike laggy zombie shooters played on a hovercraft.
Sucks to be them.
Ima shootin' zombies on my hovercraft. Yaaay!
Lighten the fuck up.

It's an on-rails shooter ffs. It ain't meant to be RE5.
Shooting. Zombies. Resident Evil legacy flavored.

Personally, I'm choosing to embrace this for the mindless fun it offers, rather than bemoan it's lack of meatiness or canonical status.

Looks quite RE4ish with heavy aliasing and sometimes muddy textures. Like the lightning though. It's coming together, whcih is great. Zombies show some effect to getting shot and show some aggressive behaviour.

Ugh, I've never been into resident evil games, and looks like this won't be changing anything
You never played RE4? You poor soul.

Yeah but that's because you're importing. it's 50 € or $. It's not a great price but it's OK, you should get it for a bit cheaper in online stores. 6-8 hours is awesome for a lightgun-game (if it's indeed true).

Okay, after watching the game, I can only draw one of three conclusions:

a) The guy controlling the zapper is a terrible player.

b) The zapper is a complete PoS that somehow restricts your movement

c) RE:UC has extremely wonky aiming.

Maybe all three, and I hope for the game's sake it's not (c).

Also, having a lag time on your reload is just dumb.

I have a feeling the reticle will move slowly ala Red Steel and not quite quickly ala RE4?

Plus, I also think this french guy sucks, no effort to headshot anyone.

He gets a headshot on a zombie in the first few seconds of the vid.

It does look a little slow (both pacing and pointer). Maybe they can tighten up the game a little in the last two months. The graphics are great through.

There was some effort near the end - particularly when it was a couple of zombies, not a whole bunch gang rushing him.

But regardless, you can tell he's not the greatest player. A few gaffes give him away - like using a shotgun on zombies halfway across the room.

EDIT: RE:UC seems to have a humongous amount of optimism riding on it by the community.

i think it looks ok...can't tell about aiming..it's something i should try myself...but the reloading...ouch...annoying.

i'm going to play this WITHOUT the zapper.

EDIT: this guy really sucks at playing

For those of you who have played the game or read more impressions than me, please explain how they messed up the aiming. Games like Trauma Center, Metroid Prime 3, and RE4 seem to have excellent pointer controls, so I'm confused as to how they could actually fudge up such a basic Wii feature. Bad default sensitivity set by the programmers?

How come whenever I see videos of this game, I never see anyone play it looking down at the "iron sights" ? Do people really play light gun games like this or is it because Wii doesn't do 1:1 so people don't even bother?

It just something that bothers me whenever I see people playing light gun games with the gun at the "hip"

i treat the wiimote as more of a "mouse type movement" control rather than a 1:1 laser pointer.

Sorry thats the best way I can describe it.

I love the reloading aspect of the game, sometimes you have to motion more than once away from the screen to reload. Sometimes it's only once, somtimes it's twice, they must've added that to give a sense of realism.

And don't you love the 3-4 second lag? More lightgun game should implement that to add to the tension!

Wow. That video makes me want to cancel my preorder. I have no idea why the pointer looks so problematic. There better be a sensitivity adjuster.

Looks pretty awesome to me. I don't think the guy was doing a very good job of playing though. Hopefully it's just him and not the control sucking.

The only thing I don't like the look of is the rapid shake you have to do to reload. I hope there's a button combo like RE4 too.

Do you want me to start listing games that were $49 (ooooooh, ten dollars difference) and could be finished in 6-8 hours, yet were utterly awesome?

Ghost Squad looks more intense, more responsive and simply more fun. And I'm a Resident Evil fan.

So yeah, dissapointing for me.

I agree, and I might as well throw Medal of Honor: Heroes 2 in. I dunno, the game has great graphics but it's very slow and looks kinda boring.

I came to post about reloading too. I rarely scream obscenities aloud when I play video games, but by the looks of it reloading in The Umbrella Chronicles might just be one of those occasions.

It seems that all the people shitting on this game can only imagine themselves playing like the douche in the video and everyone else gunning for it automatically knows that they will be bringing 100x the sass

also... do headshots require that the reticule is placed on the head for an extended period of time before they can occur? I seem to recall way back reading about this but have no idea if it is still being implimented?

Who hyped MySims? That was a goddamn EA game for Christ's sake.

Why take the E3 impressions? Why ignore the most recent ones? Because they uniformly state that you're wrong?

Finally got to try it out for myself...I'm loving the overall presentation of the game. It's fairly slick. The gameplay is also coming together in a solid fashion. One of the cooler aspects is knocking out lights to darken the game. Aiming with the Wii Remote is pretty easy, and it's also useful to have the knife around. The game also seems fairly forgiving as checkpoints appear somewhat frequently. Graphically, it's one of the Wii's best, and while quite a bit of the detail from the GC games has been lost in the transition from 3D to pre-rendered, the game looks quite good in motion. Also, the game confirms my suspicions that it doesn't really feel like any of the Gun Survivor games before it. It's a bit slower than House of the Dead, but the on-rails aspect totally changes everything.

First off, Umbrella Chronicles' visuals definitely impress -- by Wii standards, at least. While the game doesn't quite match Resident Evil 4's evocative atmosphere, the smoldering buildings and shambling corpses in the level we played looked pretty damn good. We're also digging the new Zapper setup for gameplay: Using the analog stick at the rear of the gun feels quite intuitive, and the free-look it offers lends the proceedings a cool first-person-shooter vibe. Reloading by shaking the gun works nicely, and the positioning of the C button makes switching weapons and tossing grenades a cinch.

Like the best Wii games, Umbrella Chronicles' controls are simple, intuitive and easily mastered...Combat itself is pretty relentless. Expect to build up some calluses on your trigger finger by the time you're done...RE:UC is set to deliver an exciting, authentic Resident Evil experience in time for the holiday season. We just impatiently wish that that holiday was Halloween and not Christmas.
IGN said:
While the game concept or its controls really hasn't changed, it's clear that it's definitely improved over the course of a couple of months. Better feedback from enemies as they now jolt when shot to give players an idea of the damage they're causing...Resident Evil: Umbrella Chronicles looks pretty great on the Wii with tons of destructible items and cool, detailed models of zombies and other critters.

We're a lot more content with this product than we have been in the past - clearly the game's coming together in its final hours of development.
Gamespot said:
The Wii Remote's control system is easy to use, and relies mostly on the trigger to get the job done. You'll still need the Nunchuk buttons to switch weapons and pick things up as you go, but the analog stick served only to lean as we moved, not to change the direction of the camera.

Shooter fans and Resident Evil buffs have plenty to anticipate, with the title already showing healthy signs that it will remain true to the Resident Evil storyline while adding a new type of gameplay dynamic.

If there's a Wii Zapper mode without the upscaled pointer movements, then it should be fun to play with the Wii Zapper.

If not, it will just feel weird and gimmicky.

There's a great indepth preview here (in french, sorry) from the micromania gameshow build.

The game can't come soon enough :)

any chance to see the vid on youtube? ^^
I've only my Wii here and I can't see it from that french site because of Wii Opera browser not having the proper flash player, as usual. :(
