On one hand, I can understand some of the complaints, especially about lighting.
The Orb of Light and Molten armor basically made torches pointless. Once I had mine, I didn't bother leaving torches along my dig routes to find my way around anymore. It was annoying to see how dim/slow it was when I first started today, but you know what? I actually kind of missed the survival aspect of carrying torches (and Glow sticks)
In the hour or so I've been able to play since the patch, I've used more torches than I have in the last month. With the changes, the Orb of Light feels like an upgraded Miner's Helm so you can use a proper Helm. That's it. Having it on at all times completely negated the need to worry about light.
I haven't noticed any significant increase in mobs; maybe you just don't have enough NPCs in your town yet? The number goes down as your town grows.
And having both Cthulu and a Goblin invasion show up while you're 'just trying to put up a roof' seems like over exaggeration. I was building some stuff in a new character today and it didn't seem to be a problem in the slightest.
And I actually liked the potion and herb component, it was something new to seek out and utilize. And the new furniture seems perfectly suited to the game world AND is something I've been really eager for.
Bottom line: This was an overhaul patch they managed to sneak some content into. We all knew what it was going to be before the patch launched; that doesn't make it bad, but did anyone expect them to add new bosses or biomes?
They just rendered the other ligthsources useless, they should have made torches better or something.
I'd still plant plenty of torches to scout out walls for ores, and to light up bigger rooms before this patch, granted I did not have full molten armor set yet. (2 pieces).
Thing is now I basically can't see shit most of the time, and I'm having to use my miner's helm again, wooptie doo.
Survival =/= chore to play.
It does seem like spawn rate is increased, once you stop you get swarmed, especially at night.
I stopped to kill 2 little eyes that followed me , for their lenses, and before I knew it I permanently had 3 eyes and a few zombies onscreen.
Sure made farming lenses easy, but it's an unwanted chore to kill off the constant stream of enemies most of the time.
Wait for dawn I hear you say: NO, that is another stupid chore.
I get night being scary in areas above your gear level and at the start of the game, but it shouldn't be a permanent inconvenience.
It's not difficult the way it is now, it's just annoying because I constantly have to switch weapons to whack down the next few mobs before I move on digging/gathering.
The fluff items are an issue because of inventory space, on a jungle trip if I also do some mining I have to go barebones inventory - I'll have all these fun weapons and ranged weapons and accessories, but I only bother to take what I can equip + 2-3 situational things or I get to spend half my time on an exploring trip dropping stuff ).
Let alone if I go with a friend on hardcore and he dies n drops his shit, then I just get to drop EVERYTHING I gathered so I can get his armor.
Ignore the picking up armor bit if you want to argue about it, it's plenty inconvenient alone.
The very things this game was recommended to me for, and that I recommended it to others for (none of the usual inconveniences like too little inventory space, annoying grind or chore mechanics) have vanished with the last 2 patches.
Wether you think that is a good thing or not is a matter of opinion, we are only arguing that they have changed.
I hate it.
It felt super polished, well thought out, relaxing and fun.
Now it's becoming a chore.
I'm pretty sure that the conveniences and relaxing atmosphere and sandbox gameplay are what makes it so popular, not many people care for frustrating roguelikes.
