Since 1.1 will cause drastic changes to the game, it will require a new World be generated to take advantage of all the new features.

This means that you have approximately 2 weeks to log onto the GAF Server and claim any items you may have deposited there.
If you don't export them, they will likely be gone forever.

As before, Harlan will make the world file available if you wish to download it. If there's any cool buildings you built (or want to import into your world), you can use TEdit to do so; http://www.terrariaonline.com/threads/tedit-2-terraria-map-editor.35394/ (Remember, TEdit can bork your world and especially your chests, so play it safe and back it up)

This new World will likely go live immediately after 1.1 launches (or thereabouts), whether the server modifications are working or not. It may take a few days for features like build- protection to kick in.

We probably won't import much from the previous world, which is good because the tools to do so may not be supported quickly. Harlan can tell you more about his plans for the new GAF-HUB, which will replace the apartment tower we've been using.

Thanks for the heads up. What is the save file by the way? I will change computer soon, and I don't want to lose my stuff.

The "GAFHUB" that Retro is talking about is pretty much the replacement for the GAF Tower we have on the current server. Instead of just one giant tower, we have a floating ball mass of rooms that connect to each other, hovering menancingly, growing with no rhyme and reason.

Basically, we'll start off w/ a main "hub room". It'll be huge, it'll have lots of doors and hallways and shafts that extend out from it. If players wish to use the hub, just pick an available door that's not connected to anything, and just attach a room to it. Any shape, any size. Just attach a room. The only other restrictions are that you must have another door (or several more) in your room that doesn't connect to anything, and you cannot build next to a room you've built before. You also cannot modify any rooms that have been built, or are the process of being built (example: you cant add new doors to an existing room). The purpose of the room you create is entirely up to you. You can make it your apartment, you can make it a deathtrap, you can make a room that acts like a farm, a forest, etc. Keep in mind, you dont HAVE to live in the hub, but you're more that welcome to add to the chaos.

Again, more updates to plans the closer we get to an actual update.

Check your My Documents folder, there should be a Game folder in there. That's where Terraria locally stores your info. Just back up the Terraria folder that's in there.

I would play this if it wasn't 10 bucks

it has been $5-7 multiple times, maybe even as low as $3.50.. still, even at $10 the gameplay-to-dollar ratio is nuts - I've spent ~70 hours playing. looking forward to joining you guys again as soon as the new patch hits.

This x1000. On the current GAF Server there are only 4 or 5 structures on the surface that I personally didn't build. I'd love it if people would pick a chunk of land and built a house, tower, fort, whatever there.

It seems like I was the only one out there just building shit, and if you log on now, you can pretty much regularly find stuff every couple of screens that I just slapped together to develop the world. Seriously, log on and head left from spawn... I've built little towers and structures and shit *everywhere*.

Your loss, this game is a *steal* at $10, especially with the upcoming free Expansion. It's a fantastic single player game and Harlan maintains a server for GAF to use at no expense for all of your multiplayer needs. People in this thread are routinely saying how great this game is and how many hours they've sunk into it.

I mean, unless you literally have to pick between $10 worth of food or $10 on a game, there's no reason not to give this a try. Your only other option is to watch this thread, it might go on sale around Thanksgiving or Christmas.

2.49 actually during the steam blunder. I would have paid the full 10 dollars if i had known any better... it was one of those "on the fence" titles though and that deal was way to good to pass up.

291 hours, buddy. 291 hours. This does not include the hours used of just having the server running, that is actual gameplay time. :p

Retro more than likely has logged in more time than me.

731 Hours, but in my defense there are a lot of times I just left the game open at the main menu instead of quitting and went to bed. I would guess it's probably 500-600 though.

Tidbits from the Terraria IRC chat;
(cleaned up from fucking terrible forum-speak)

"I asked Tiy there would be more mini-bosses, and he responded, "Just wait till you see 1.1."

-

There will be no gender-specific armor; armors will have two sprites which changed based on the gender. The female armor sprite will have normal pants so there most likely won't be 'chainmail bikini'-type situations.

-

No word on whether armor mannequins will come in gender-specific forms or not.

-

A Random Character option is in now, apparently.

13 Days, not gonna make it. At least Zelda is out Sunday to distract me, but it's still gonna be a rough week.

I'll have to find a way to study for finals AND give the update a whirl. If I cut out sleep, I think it's possible!

Underlining emphasis added by yours truly. Sorry for the lack of images, I guess tinypic is banned now?

Ah well, click the images to see them full size.

The Wall of Fle....Text

We are right on schedule for the 1.1 release on December 1st. The new content is just about finished, and there isn't much left to do now but final bug testing and balancing. We've started our first testing playthrough to make sure everything is fitting together, and it's going great!

So what's new?
The teasers we've posted so far are just the tip of the iceberg. There is a lot more coming your way. There are 39 new monsters, including 4 brand new bosses. We've got three new NPCs, all waiting to be rescued. And for the loot obsessed, there are 222 new items, including 4 sets of armor, and 21 accessories.

Hardmode.
Starting hard mode is pretty straight forward. Go to hell, take revenge on the guide for all the times he let the slimes in your house, and destroy a giant creature made out of left over body parts that pukes up worms and shoot lasers out of it's eyes.

When that simple task is completed, your world will change. There will be new challenges and tougher enemies to face. You will probably die. A lot. And you will have a blast doing it.

Start a new world, or use my old one?
You will be fine either way. Obviously, if you want to get the full experience, you'll want to play a new world from scratch. We made a lot of improvements to world gen, and there are quite a few new surprised waiting to be found. Just make sure to watch your step when you go underground, as there is no telling what all those random pressure plates are connected to. ;)

Random thoughts.

It took a bit longer than I had hoped, but this update will completely change the game. The new lighting system is a lot easier on the eyes, and it adds a lot of atmosphere to the various biomes in the world. Being able to place items straight out of your inventory makes building so much easier. The new mechanic system allows you to create some interesting devices and traps. We are all very exicted about 1.1, there is something for everyone!

Teasers.

This will probably be it for teasers until we release the 1.1 trailer, and I think we've saved the best for last.

house-int-png.23517

There is now a NPC housing interface. It's pretty simple, but allows full control over where your NPCs live, and it will even tell you if their living area is missing some of the requirements.

pumps-archers-png.23518

One of the most requested features has found it's way into the game: Pumps!
After we put this in, the first thing we did on the beta server was pump lava from hell into the overworld. Good times! (Those archers in the screenshot are jerks..)

good-pre-png.23519

Weapons and accessories now have random conditions that improve their attributes.

bad-pre-png.23520

This can work both ways, however. Don't worry too much, as one of the new NPCs will allow you to reforge an item to change it's condition. (for a price)

mega-pre-png.23521

Unreal Megashark. 'Nuff said.

So what's in store AFTER 1.1?

Expect to see some a Christmas update around the 15th. We've got some festive content coming your way that will definite put you in the spirit.

We are also very excited to announce that we have partnered with Head Up Games to release a boxed collectors edition copy of Terraria. There will be some fun goodies found inside, and even a special in-game item! We'll have more details on this later. (Source)

Alright, so we've got 39 new monsters, 4 brand new bosses, 222 new items. NPC housing is finally under our control (looks like we'll use little banners, though I hope they are only visible when the Housing Interface is open). The blue NPC appears to be wearing a lab coat, so maybe an alien engineer or something. Pumps for moving liquids, finally. Not sold on the "Random Conditions" of weapons, that seems sort of... MMORPG-y to me, but at least there's an NPC who can fix that shit.

All this, plus a Christmas-themed update in the middle of December? Hell yeah.

DROOOOOOOOOOOOOOOL at 1.1, that is EASILY 200+ hours of content. Random stats omgggggggggggg. :D SO MUCH CONTENT, practically doubles the size of the game.

... are images showing up for other people? I keep getting the IMG tag with the address and a bunch of fuckin' asterisks. Something up with GAF now?

Retro

Whatever site you are using is banned. Host them somewhere else.

Bleh, dunno what they have against tinypic, but oh well....

I hate imgur since they went to their "We're only going to show 200 images unless you pay us" bullshit, guess I'll have to fuckin' deal with min.us's shitty interface or look for something else.

Unrelated: We've got a long-time player on our Terraria server who applied for a GAF membership a few months ago ago. Any friendly Terraria-loving mods want to use their GAF-Jesus Powers and check on the approval status of "RobotHaus"?

Hmm, missed this part the first time since I kind of glossed over the details and leapt straight at the big features, but...

So between now and the end of the month we'll be getting be a video for 1.1 too. Wonder what's in the Christmas patch... maybe some snow?

Tinypic was banned b/c urls were being replaced with porn and other unrelated content. So some transexual porn pic showed up in the Forza 4 thread.

The character in the 2nd pic looks like Tingle. Can't wait for the update.

My first thought is that it was another player with some new type of armor on. But on second glance it appears to have a Skeleton face, so... perhaps "Undead Archer" or something?

I'm a little disappointed we won't have pipes or anything and the pumps are just sort of automatic "liquid teleporters", but I get why they wouldn't want that functionality... and there's so much else to be happy with, it's only a very very tiny thing missing... though one they may actually have and just haven't shown yet.

Gotcha. I hadn't seen anything about it being banned, but that sounds like a pretty good reason.

Yeah, it's kind of disappointing that there won't have to be a pipeline built to actually pump stuff, but it would get kind of annoying with intersecting pipes in 2d.

Maybe they are like the wires and only show up when you hold the wrench?

Possibly. There's also a little box with a 1 in it at the top of that screenshot... some kind of pump control, maybe?

I'm also thinking (hoping) that the little NPC banners are only visible when the Housing Menu is open. I;m not crazy about the way they look but if that's the price for being able to pick and choose where NPCs live, I'll deal with it.

I had my Demolitionist get killed by a random slime and he spawned in a little decorative structure out in bumfuck, and every time I tried to get him back to his house, he'd pick a bathroom or decorative area in another tower... was very frustrating and eventually I just ignored him. Not like I need bombs anyways, right?

Sounds like I'm going to have to start playing again soon...

Yeah, I have a feeling that everyone who kind of drifted away from Terraria after 1.0.6 turned out to be kind of a let down are going to be back in full force. It'll be nice to log in and see lots of people hanging out.

I think the plan Harland and I have developed will work out well, with large chunks of the world being open for development and no apartment tower to dominate the landscape. I'd love to see people pick plots of land to develop, to the point where our surface looks sort of like a large village with buildings from one end to the other.

Woohoo.

The random attributes for weapons has got a sort of Borderlands slant to it, doesn't it?
(please remember, mods will NOT be giving away free crap anymore, so don't even bother to ask)

I would hope it would take a bit for Hard Mode to be enabled (like, more than a week). Every time we start a new world for the server, we tend to get through everything in the first three days.

No more freebies, plus most people starting fresh characters, it should slow things down significantly.... so maybe 6 days.

Not giving away freebies is gonna be hard, actually... I was so used to tossing people free bricks and building supplies in the interest of having building projects going on, I kind of made it so people didn't *want* to build without freebie supplies.

So, from here on out, that means no more "I need 5000 bricks!", and that goes double for me (most of my sky palace was mod-generated).

Just another reminder, you have 10 days to clear out anything you have stored on the GAF Server or it will be lost when the new server goes up!

Got damn that looks like a good update. I may have to get back into this game and play with you guys.

At the very least you can hop on now and see what we've built. There's some especially cool stuff on the left side courtesy of Mwah. I'll be hanging around all night if you want a guide who can teleport and knows where everything awesome is.

I didn't notice this before.

Yeah, they have hotkeys for torches and glowsticks now too, so it sounds like everything is going to be much easier to get at.

I still wish we could set the mouse buttons, I wanted Grapple on mine but I guess it's not gonna happen.

I think of all the new additions, I'm most looking forward to whatever contraptions can be built with the pressure plates and other wiring stuff. The redstone stuff in Minecraft is by far my favorite part of the game (just wish there was more to do with it in vanilla MC), and having something similar to play around with has me quite excited.

Fantastic, i'm going to create a new character on a new world for some coop fun with friends. I may have missed it, but are they going to make it easier to join friends games using steam (right click, join game)?

I only just started playing Terraria (w/ friends) and I managed to get one of the best swords, beat all the bosses, etc in a few days.

Admittedly part of that was when my friend told me how to trigger bosses and progress where I would have otherwise not thought of, but still, now that I've done most everything I'm at a loss of what to do esp. since everyone else stopped playing too.

But this update will spark some much needed life into the game. I eagerly await Hard Mode and being able to continue my character and making good use of the sword I got.

If you're a completeist, there are lots of things to hunt for and some weapon/armor pieces that won't be upgrades but are still things to get. You have the 'best sword' (I assume the Night's Edge), but do you have the best lance? All the accessories? All the magic weapons, ranged weapons, guns and ammo? Do you have all the vanity items? These are all things that, if you particularly enjoy collecting, can extend the longevity of the game.

If you're a builder, build stuff. Start a new world and build houses for each NPC, places to store all the stuff you've collected, and themed houses and towers. Crawl around your world looking for interesting spots to build stuff.

If you're into combat, you can start a new Mediumcore or Hardcore character and intentionally gimp yourself on Life/Mana and equipment. Purposely making a game harder for yourself isn't something that will appeal to anyone. Try a theme character that uses only specific equipment; I made a Samus Aran alt and forced myself to use only the space-themed arms, armor and accessories.

Alternatively, you might try looking for a PVP server to have deathmatches on. People have even built maps for "Capture the Gem", a variant on CTF matches. The devs have stated before that they want integrated PVP options with dedicated maps, but until that's in, you can cruise the forums for PVP servers.

If you're into challenges, the Terraria site also has a whole section devoted to "Challenge Maps" where people have built elaborate story or obstacle-based maps where the objective is to reach the end without digging or building outside the rules each map comes with.

Finally, you can log onto the GAF server (gafterraria.dyndns.org, port: 7777) and see what everyone has built, say hello, or have one of the mods (like me) spawn a shitload of enemies on you at once for a real challenge. 50 Demons butchered just about everyone, that was the hardest we've ever done, I think... but summoning 500 bunnies and then shifting to a blood moon is always fun too... heh.

Edit:

As expected, because of the annual Steam Thanksgiving Sale, Terraria now going for $4.99, a 50% discount.

If you're the type of person who feels like giving, the 4-pack has a 50% discount also, going for $14.99.

Will Terraria get even cheaper during this sale? I have no idea. We've never seen it officially under $4.99 anyway (the $2.99 sale was a mistake on Steam's part, so don't go expecting it), so I really doubt it will get cheaper.

ALSO: If you just bought the game, and popped by the server- YES ITS DEAD IN THERE RIGHT NOW. We are all waiting for the update. When update comes, it will live again.
