smidget's mix - There is Hope for Us

Requiem for a Dream - Winter Overture – Flows nicely to the next track but I’m not to sure it sets the right mood (slightly menacing string section to mellow guitar song X 3)

Anthony Capp – Always – Something about his voice doesn’t sit well with me. Nothing too special going on with this song. Decent.

Pedro the Lion - Bad Diary Days – Exposes The Stills for the moochers they are. Love the bass line.

Elliott Smith - Waltz #2 – Never really gave Elliott’s music any attention but I see why he gets all the praise thanks to this track. Great lyrics and the piano compliments his voice very well.

The Cure - Pictures of You – Not a big fan of The Cure’s later work but this is one of the better songs.

Third Eye Blind - How's It Gonna Be – The only TEB song I can tolerate…lyrics are blah but the melody gets me everytime.

Death Cab for Cutie – Photobooth – I don’t like Death Cab and this song didn’t help any. Sorry. ;)

Coldplay - The Scientist – One of the only songs I liked from their second album. I like singing along to this song (high notes kill me though :p)

VAST – Flames – He/they(?) had a song on the radio in the mid to late 90’s that I liked…I was expecting something very different. Very soothing.

Shigeru Umehayashi - Yumeji's Theme (from In the Mood for Love) – I’ve had this DVD for a couple of years and still haven’t watched it. I should get around to doing so. Nice way to end side A.

Foo Fighters - Everlong (acoustic) – I wish I were better at playing the acoustic guitar. :( Awesome song…like it much better than the album version.

The Bens - Just Pretend – Get rid of Ben Folds and it’s a good song. Piano sounds out of place.

The Jealous Sound - Hope for Us – What the…..you already put Everlong in your mix. :p Again I don’t like his voice. Guitars sound a tad generic.

The Wrens – Happy – Great song from a great album. Never get tired of it and it’s even better live.

The Zombies - I Want Her She Wants Me – Kinda hard not to notice that this song is from the 60’s :p. Dig the funky bass line.

Ben Gibbard - They Don't Know – See Photobooth.

Iron and Wine - Each Coming Night – What Mr. Gibbard should strive to sound like. :p Folk music done right.

The Beatles - In My Life – Lots of good bass lines in this mix. I think McCartney’s an ass but he sure can play the bass. Good song.

Beach Boys - God Only Knows – Goes well with the previous song… typical Beach Boys sound but has a nice vibe.

Radiohead String Tribute - No Surprises – Much better than Plastic Mutations that’s for sure. Above average rendition of the song…one of the better sounding ones on this particular album.

This mix definitely had a theme running through it (strings, acoustic guitar, mellowness) and you pretty much ran with it. Could have done without a couple of songs but I enjoyed your mix. :)

Plankton's mix.

1. Silverchair - Israel's Son (5:20)

Hmm, I get a Come Together vibe from it. A nice driving feel to it, although not quite my cup of tea.

2. PJ Harvey - Harder (2:04)

Polly I can take or leave. Short, sweet and doesn't overstay it's welcome.

3. American Music Club - Rise (3:12)

Hmm, not really feeling this.

4. The Birthday Party - Big Jesus Trash Can (0:56)

Umm, is this clipped? It's a great song, but I was sure it was a lot longer.

5. the sugarcubes - hetero scum (3:28)

Yay! I miss Einar!

6. Einstürzende Neubauten - Stella maris (5:18)

Yay! Although kind of mellow after the Sugarcubes.

7. Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds - The Carny (8:01)

Pleasantly disturbing. You really can't have enough Nick Cave.

8. Leftfield - Swords (5:06)

One of Leftfield's weaker tracks in my opinion, but it has a great video.

9. The Dust Brothers - Jack's Smirking Revenge (3:58)

Not generally fond of their stuff other than production/remixing, but it's got a nice electronic creepy feel.

10. The KLF - Dream Time in Lake Jackson (2:35)

Chill Out, let me count the ways that I love thee. I've got this on vinyl somewhere.

11. LFO - Psychodelik (5:21)

Yay! I've always had a soft spot for LFO.

12. Air - Kelly Watch The Stars (3:46)

And for Air. I thought Moon Patrol was kind of flawed, but this is one of my favourites from that time.

13. Depeche Mode - Uselink (2:20)

I can't play this for some reason.

14. Paul van Dyk - Living for the night (High-waisted flares) (6:05)

Uh oh, trancey trousers. Admittedly, this isn't as offensive as most of his stuff to me, but umm.

15. Deltron 3030 - 3030 (7:29)

Excellent stuff.

16. Ben Folds - The Luckiest (4:25)

Really not my thing. whiney whitey.

-----

Overall, I like the disturbing/creepy undertone I get from the overall mix, even if you weren't going for that. I like the mix of electronic and traditional artists, even if I don't really enjoy their contributions.

Absolutely worth the listen, maybe a bit over the place with regards to the flow of things. Well implemented towards the end though.

Scorcho's mix.

John Cage - 4:33

Off to a good start.

John Cage - 4:33

Continuing the ambient vibe from before and building well.

John Cage - 4:33

Moving into fairly repetitive sounds, but still enjoyable.

John Cage - 4:33

Are those cats in the background?

John Cage - 4:33

Totally out of place in a mix.

John Cage - 4:33

Brings back the nice safe feeling of before.

John Cage - 4:33

Building on the last track, and nicely moving.

John Cage - 4:33

Those damn cats again.

John Cage - 4:33

Interesting segue from the last track.

John Cage - 4:33

Continuing on a very similar vibe to the last couple of tracks. Not bad, but not great.

John Cage - 4:33

Really beginning to sound samey about this point.

John Cage - 4:33

Oh my. I didn't expect such a radical transformation at this point. Definately getting interesting.

John Cage - 4:33

Running with the hard vibe of the previous track, I'm drawn into it all now.

John Cage - 4:33

Sadly, we seem to be back with the cats at this point, but after the last track, they seem irrelevant background to a grander scale.

John Cage - 4:33

Intense.

John Cage - 4:33

Building to a beautiful crescendo, this brings everything together nicely implementing the driving cat wails that has been a common theme.

That is the best way of saying "Scorcho is a goddamn flake" that I've ever seen.

By the way, the next-to-last track isn't actually being conducted by John Cage. It's a cover version by the Invisible Boys of Alabama.

my review of bune duggy's first disc:

1) oingo boingo - insanity:
this song was a cool start to the mix, brooding and dark, and then it went on for 7 minutes. if it wasn't so long, i'd like this song a whole lot more, but to me, it's appropriateness as a mix-starter wore off at around 4 minutes.

2) apex theory - swing this:
i can't put my finger on who this reminds me of, but it was an pretty cool song. haven't really listened to any apex theory outside of what i've heard people play in cars, maybe i'll check them out a little more. i didn't really like the jazzy bridge into the verses though.

3) blue man group - the current:
when i saw blue man group's show, i was very very impressed by their musical abilities, but they never really had any vocals or anything and i'd rather they kept it that way. they should just stick to awesome drumming.

4) the clash - should i stay or should i go:
ah, a classic. i like this song, mainly because i've heard it so many times.

5) mark lanegan band - methamphetamine blues:
this song was cool, it had sort of a surreal feel to it, except i didn't really care for the distortion over everything. but i liked the backup vocals and distorted guitar.

6) david bowie - we prick you:
can't really go wrong with bowie...awesome bassline. this song is solid.

7) reel big fish - she has a girlfriend now:
other than some song that used to play on the radio a lot i haven't really heard much reel big fish, and i've really never been much of a ska/punk person. well not the ska aspect anyways. i kind of like this song though, especially the female vocals.

8) serart - leave melody counting fear:
didn't like this one. and i didn't really have a problem with system of a down, but i just didn't like this at all.

9) seven mary three - peel:
not a big fan of seven mary three. no sirree.

10) cake - mahna mahna:
now i like cake a lot, but when i was in junior high and high school i used to wake up to mancow every morning and they played this song or at least a version of it. now, i hated mancow and his show with some passion, maybe because i associated it with waking up at 6 in the morning or maybe because he's a moron, but anyways this song reminds me of his show and therefore being up early and therefore i hate it.

11) soul coughing - super bon bon:
soul coughing is sweet, but so is mike doughty's solo stuff, and i can't decide which is better. this song is cool though, i know that much.

12) the toadies - possum kingdom:
i remember really loving this song, and i still really like it's melody but i think it's lyrics are pretty retarded now. but it's still an awesome tune.

13) helmet - army of me:
i definitely like bjork's original of this one better, but even that one i don't like much.

14) talking heads - psycho killer:
this is probably my favorite talking heads song. awesome.

15) they might be giants - why does the son shine?:
i am not in need of a musical astronomy lesson but this song is kind of cute in a retarded way. like you want to punch it in the face but you can't because it's got down's syndrome and that would be horrible.

16) the verve pipe - the freshman:
i really really really really loved this song, and it's still sweet. so melancholy.

17) dave matthews and tim reynolds - stream:
as much as i like to hate on dave matthews, he's really really talented. this song made me take out my guitar and fail miserably at trying to play the beginning of it.

18) the muppets - rainbow connection:
oh man rainbow connection cover. i think i like it just as much if not more than the me first and the gimme gimmes cover. man the muppets are sweeeeeet.

19) tool and rage against the machine - can't kill the revolution:
well i like the rage against the machine aspect of this song, but the tool aspect not so much. kind of undecided on this one, but i think i like it. it's a good end to the mix though.

overall: this mix was a whole bunch of stuff i don't normally listen to, or haven't heard in a long time. a bunch of songs that i really really loved awhile ago, and a bunch of songs that didn't quite gel with me. first half of it didn't go so well with me, but the second half was pretty solid with a bunch of songs i used to know and love.

my review of yoshifumi's mix

1. Beck - He's a Mighty Good Leader.
Its Beck, even though there isn't much to the lyrics, it still kicks ass. And I think it works well as a lead in to the next track.

2. Weezer - Jamie
I have always liked this song, and this live accoustic version is even better than I remember the original song...well, except the microphone clicks. Where is this one from?

3. Sondre Lerche - Two Way Monolouge
Good track, I haven't heard anything from Sondre Lerche before this, but I like this song.

4. Devics - Don't Take it Away
I like the vocals, and the overall laid back feel to the song.

5. Dogs Die in Hot Cars - Paul Newman's Eyes
The first time I listened to this song, I thought it was alright...but on subsequent listens it just annoyed me.

6. Kings of Convenience - I'd Rather Dance with You
Their latest cd has been on my "to check" list for a while now, and i have really enjoyed this song.

7. Pheonix - Too Young
I liked the guys voice, but the song seemed kinda boring to me.

8. John Vanderslice - Me and My 424
Good song, I like the song composition, to the general structure.

9. Rilo Kiley - Portions for Foxes
One of my favorite songs off that album. Not too big on most of her lyrics though

10. Keane - Somewhere only we Know
Its alright, I like the piano and stuff.

11. The Weakerthans - Time's Arrow
I find it hard to believe this guy used to be in Propagandhi. Good song though.

12. Stars - Your Ex-Lover is Dead
Love the strings in the background at the beginning and inbetween verses. The dual vocals were nice too. I'll have to check out thier album sometime.

13. Sufjan Stevens - Size Too Small
I really like Sufjan Stevens, not my favorite track off Seven Swans, but still a good one.

14. Don Caballero - A lot of People Tell Me I Have a Fake British Accent
I still have difficulty understanding what the hell math-rock actually is, but the two bands I have heard which are attached to that genre, Slint and now Don Caballero, I have liked...so that means something.

Overall: I liked this mix, and everything seemed to flow pretty well together. It was a nice, for the most part, laid back mix of songs. Nothing too "rocking", but thats not really a problem in my book.

I need to listen to Hotarubi's mix atleast two more times before I review it, and then bune duggy's mix (once I get it), then I'll get back to your electronica mix. I don't listen to much electronica though, so it should be interesting.

17) dave matthews and tim reynolds - stream:
as much as i like to hate on dave matthews, he's really really talented. this song made me take out my guitar and fail miserably at trying to play the beginning of it.

actually that was Tim Reynolds. Dave's good, but not that good.

Anyway, did you make a different mix for each of us? Interesting idea.

Hey 8bit, I've been listening to your mix the past couple days, and I like it. It's different music than I would usually listen to so it's cool to have some new stuff. I'm not sure what the songs are though as it's one file.

Hey, don't worry about it.
If there's anything in it that you want to know about, tell me what sticks out in particular and I'll point out what it is exactly. Otherwise, I'm just happy if you find it interesting.

Also, I'll get to yours tomorrow, it's sitting on my desktop. I've been building furniture today and should have burned it for listening earlier, but that never occured to me until just now.

8bits Review

First of all I'd like to say it was aweosme the way you mixed it. Flowed together really awesome!

It was hard to know which songs are which sometimes, but I think I have a name to each one now.

I'll just name the standouts of the mix.

Mutabaruka - Dis Poem

I thought this was an awesome intro in to the mix. Sort of sets you up for the next couple of songs.

Grandmaster Flash - Scorpio

This song was aweesome. One of the peaks of the album. (I think this was the song that came in at about 19:00 ?)

The Prodigy - Rat Poison

I love prodigy.

Rachel Stevens - Some Girls

I liked this track. Sounded a little poppy but I didn't really mind that. (Is this the same chickety from S Club 7? )

Nouvelle Vague - Teenage Kicks

I didn't mind this track at all.

Phoenix - Run Run Run

I doo like this one though. i'm sure i've heard it heaps before but this one thing I remembered was that I liked it

Steven Seagal ft. Lady Saw - Strut

Ahaha! Is this really Steven Seagal? As in the fine actor who graces our movie screens?

This song wasn't toooo bad actually. Had a nice beat.

Overall it was a pretty awesome mix. :)

I'll get down to reviewing Scorcho's and Drozmights mix now.

my review of bune duggy's second mix:

1) iommi and dave grohl - goodbye lament:
eh this was ok i guess. i kind of like dave grohl but this song was kind of dumb. plus if they mean "lament" as in "expressing grief," then he was pronouncing it wrong to suit the song. which is stupid.

2) gary jules - mad world:
i like this cover, but i like the alternate version on the donnie darko soundtrack even better. the one with the drums. this one is good, but not as cool as the drum version i think.

3) me first and the gimme gimmes - who put the bomp:
i think i like everything by me first and the gimme gimmes and this song is no exception.

4) wool - coalinga:
this one didn't really do anything for me. just loud and fast with filtered vocals. chorus was ok though.

5) transplants - tall cans in the air:
oh jeez. i really liked this even though it reminds me of a bunch of other failed white rock rappers. which is a really stupid concept but this song is hilarious.

6) eagles of death metal - whorehoppin (shit, goddamn):
i like the beat of this song, but other than that it was ok i guess. singer sort of sounds like the guy from archers of loaf.

7) gorillaz and d12 - 911:
gorillaz stuff isn't good until you throw some rappers in, so this song is pretty cool.

8) the clash - know your rights:
this is a public service announcement...WITH GUITAAAAARRRRSSS. best part of the song.

9) ac/dc - big gun:
man ac/dc is the shit and has taken my top spot for driving music.

10) bad religion - american jesus:
i don't really have any beef with bad religion, but they don't really do too much for me. i'm kind of neutral on this one i guess.

11) anthrax - poison my eyes:
don't really like anthrax. and this song might've been ok if it hadn't been 7 minutes long and mostly the same guitar riffs.

12) aphex twin - ventolin (video version):
i like aphex twin on the one hand, but on the other hand i don't like this song. too much noise. and noise that seems to be just at the correct frequency to really irritate.

13) dennis leary - asshole:
as far as comedy songs go, i usually don't like them, but this song is pretty funny.

14) kenna - man fading:
solid beat, but the vocals were pretty meh. chorus is ok though.

15) fade to bluegrass - unforgiven:
oh man this cover was sweeeet. i'm going have to get that bluegrass tribute to metallica, becuase it's pretty awesome.

16) apocalyptica - from out of nowhere:
man contemporary string stuff these days is pretty awesome. especially when it's covers of metal. i'm going to have to listen to more.

17) led zeppelin - bron-y-aur stomp:
i liked this song. mainly because of the kickass guitar. but i like most zeppelin stuff, so yeah.

18) james - laid:
this song is cool despite the fact that i hear it a lot.

19) dick dale and gary hoey - miserlou '97:
can't go wrong with that guitar riff. solid.

20) the foremen - firing the surgeon general:
a funny song about masturbation. although it would've been better if the mix ended with the song before this, but i guess this ends the mix on a light note.

then there was this final track which was kind of funny.

overall:
i think i liked this mix more than bune duggy's first disc...this one there were maybe a few songs that i really didn't like, but the majority of them i liked. the other (first) mix, i liked maybe half of it. but this one was overall pretty solid. not too much flow, but a bunch of good songs which mostly drowned out the ones i disliked. overall i liked it.

Bad news. My computer broke down a bit, we got a new hard drive, not everything was transferred. I only have Dormer's mix and I think the second part of Bishop's. Maybe a couple others somewhere, but it will be a little before I review them all. I will try to still get them done in a timely fashion though.

Sorry...was just re-reading the thread.

I'm guessing it's a reference to Sugar, right? Now THERE is a band that more people should listen to...

Here's the review for Bishoptl's second mix. I'll get to the first one later, but since I'm not a big hiphop fan I figure I'll get the one I know I'll somewhat like out of the way first.

Lost in the Plot- The Dears: Not a bad song. The voice sounds very familiar. Not sure where from though. The song feels a little generic in parts, but it's catchy for the most part. 5.5/10

All in the Suit that You Wear- Stone Temple Pilots: I haven't listened to STP for a while. I'm slightly seeing why. It just feels predictable and far too reminiscent of other bands. However, they still hold a bit of a place in my heart. 6/10

Come Again- Thornley: What can I say, I'm not a big fan of rock chord driven rock. 2.5/10

Bounce- Danko Jones: Feels very generic, from the lyrics to the voice to the guitar. Again, just not my type of music. 3/10

Barracuda- Heart: Ooh, I haven't heard this song for a long while. Catchy, fun, brings back good, innocent memories of being in the backseat of cars getting introduced to music of days past. Her voice is better than I remember. 6/10

Drive- Incubus: I recently saw Incubus in concert recently. I had seen them a few years before, and they did a great show. I was afraid my tastes had changed since then, considering I didn't like their new album. Unfortunately, it took this concert to make me realize I really don't like Incubus much anymore. They always seem to follow a formula in their music, the lyrics aren't very good, feels too faux emotional. However, I cannot deny the singer has a nice voice, and it's catchy. Again, this brings back good memories. 5/10

The Way I Feel- Robert Plant: I've never really heard any of Plant's solo work. It's not bad. I still love his voice, has such a great quality to it. The sound of the guitar kinda bothers me on this though, not sure why. But it's good to know I can still respect him, even after Led Zeppelin. 6/10

War on War- Wilco: Good song. One of my favorites of Wilco. Maybe my all time favorite. It has such good dynamics to it. A great build up and release of energy. Good good song. 9/10

March of Death- Jack de la Rocha & DJ Shadow: Meh. DJ Shadow is the redeeming
factor in this song, the music he makes has some interesting parts. But I’ve never been a big fan of de la Rocha’s style and voice. 4/10

Blowjob from a Rattlesnake- Nashville Pussy: Just the name of this song almost redeems it. But I’m not at all a fan of this kind of music. I’ve heard far too much exactly like it. 3/10

Fresh Deadly Roses- Soundgarden: I used to be a big fan of Soundgarden, and they’re still pretty good. A little repetitive in parts, not their best song, but listenable. 6.5/10

The Big Money- Rush: I respect Rush, but I’ve never really liked them. This feels cheesy, and I just can’t help but not like it. 5/10

I Can't Get Behind That- William Shatner: An interesting choice to put on a mix. I can’t get behind the main lyric. It’s just a listing of grievances. It’s like bad standup comedy condensed into a 3 minute song. Kinda annoying. It’s a bit funny though in parts. 6/10

Line in the Sand- Motorhead: I remember your thread about this. Again, I give Motorhead some respect for the work they’ve done, but I can’t get into the music. Not at all. 4/10

In total, I did not like this mix too much. The songs didn’t really flow, they felt very random. The only song I really liked was by a band that I already knew, which is no fault of your own, but it wasn’t helpful in my own musical growth. I felt bad reviewing this, which isn’t a very good sign. 3.5/10

Dormer’s review:

Chief Inspector Blancheflower- The Fiery Furnaces: I REALLY liked this song. I love the almost chaotic sound of the synth in the background. It creates these off key melodies that sound so odd, yet this beautiful strumming stringed instrument overpowers it in a moment of harmony and beauty, only to return to the original chaos. I also like the abrupt change mid-song. It’s mostly a different song, but it actually flows. The verse feels very organic and free-flowing, yet this synth part interrupts in an exciting change of sound. I am buying this album. 9.5/10

She’s Electric- Oasis: I haven’t listened to Oasis for a while, and that makes me feel bad upon the listening of this song. It’s just so catchy and energetic. Good stuff. 8/10

Zak and Sara- Ben Folds: I have never actually listened to anything more than 2 Ben Folds’ songs. The harmonies his voice gives such a pleasing sound in association with the piano. In all respects, this song is pretty simple: just voice and piano. Yet it’s incredibly powerful –so much that I would rather have it no other way. He gives great passion in his voice and playing. Please recommend me an album to buy. 9/10

In the Aeroplane Over the Sea- Neutral Milk Hotel: One of the greatest songs from one of the greatest albums by one of the greatest bands. Great. Poetry is the best word to be used in description of the lyrics; they’re simply incredible. Painting such placid, delightful images through sound and word. Great instrumentation on this song as well: the use of the saw especially adds. Dare I do it? Dare I give such a high rating? I think so. 10/10

Fighting in a Sack- The Shins: A very fun, enthused song. Literally toe tapping. I’ve heard much of the Shins, but not too much from this album. I will look into this one more. 8.5/10

What Tom Said About Girls- The Blow: This song is pretty good. The voice isn’t anything really that special, which normally wouldn’t matter too much, but with such a simple song where the voice is especially important it brings the song down a bit. I don’t like the synth part on this too much. It feels a bit repetitive. 6/10

Rare Ould Times- Flogging Molly: I’ve always liked everything I’ve heard of Flogging Molly. One of the few punk bands I can admit to liking. It’s a joy to listen to, it makes one feel like dancing and the shaking of the rumpus and such things affiliated with dancing. Good stuff. 8/10

Don’t Stop Me Now- Queen: At first viewing, this seemed like an odd choice for a mix like this. But it fits. And then again, it is Queen, where doesn’t it belong? I don’t believe I had heard this song before. I regret that. It’s good, catchy, enthused, a prime example of what makes Queen good. 8/10

Neighborhood #2 (Laika)- The Arcade Fire: I’m running out of clever things to say. I like it. Reminds me of some other band. The Cure? Not sure. But it sounds very familiar. It’s still a good good song though. 7.5/10

Knock Yourself Out- Jon Brion: This reminds me a bit of Badly Drawn Boy. But it’s good, very pleasing melodies and harmonies. 7/10

Your Magic Is Working- Of Montreal: Kinda reminiscent of the Shins. Likewise inspired by the 60’s. Nonetheless, it’s good. The chorus really brings it together, and flows exceedingly well with the rest of the song, hardly a transition at all. The piano brings a nice point of focus to it. 8/10

Good Vibrations- Brian Wilson: Good transition from the last song. I’ve always liked the Beach Boys, especially this work of theirs. I will need to pick up this album one day. Catchy song, great chorus, good fun. I still prefer driving around with the windows down blaring “Wouldn’t it be Nice”, but this could be a close second. 8.5/10

Cosmic Kids- Lucky Pierre: BuddyC showed me their latest album, which was good, and I assume this is some of their earlier work. This is a great song, a good choice for the last track. It offers a very calming effect. The lyrics tell a good story, very elegiac, telling of the gradual passage of time, loss, and decay into bitterness. Yet, it’s not depressing. Somehow. No idea how. But it makes me smile instead of doing the ol’ upside down smile. Good stuff. 9/10

In total, I really liked this mix. One of my favorites so far. Not one song I didn’t like, and several which will inspire purchases. It flowed together very well, never getting too slow or too fast, but never monotonous either. Make more mixes like this, and I will be happy. 8.5/10

Quadrophenic's Mix

Big Sky - The Kinks Not bad. Not too familiar with The Kinks so this is pretty good. Sounds vaguely 60-ish, but in a good way.

That's the Punchline - The Walkmen Actually sounds pretty similar to the first track. Are the bands related in any way? Not bad.

Already Dead - Beck Great song by Beck, I really love the guitar in the song.

Los Angeles, I'm Yours - The Decemberists Nice song, def. a Bowie feel in it. Not bad. Is the rest of their stuff similar to this?

Going to Georgia - The Mountain Goats I'm not really that fond of this kind of 'singing' so I'll have to pass. He's not a bad guitarist though.

Smokey Day - The Zombies The keyboard/whatever it is really makes this song. Excellent song.

Holland, 1945 - Neutral Milk Hotel The distortion is used to great effect but maybe the singing is too fast for the song? I dunno, it's a decent song.

10 A.M. Automatic - The Black Keys Sounds like a song from the movie "Iron Eagle," the song that the kid plays that makes him blow up stuff easier. (It's been a while since I've seen the movie)

Do You Like Me - Fugazi Very good song, love the fuzz. Fugazi was such a great band.

Rabbit Eyed - Red Red Meat I swear I've heard of this band but I don't know why; none of the song titles seem familiar. Good song, jangly guitars and all.

Good Morning, Captain - Slint I can see how this band could get interesting but it's a little slow for a 7 minute song.

Rain King - Sonic Youth Yup, that's Sonic Youth. I know they're influential but I've never been able to get into them. Sorry. At least it isn't a cover of that Counting Crows song, that would have been bad.

Matter vs Space - Beulah Nice song, kinda happy sounding. I like it.

How Lester Lost His Wife - Of Montreal Not bad, unusual for sure but not bad.

Kim's Watermelon Gun - The Flaming Lips ah, Clouds Taste Metallic. Great album, great band.

Scared Straight - The Long Winters Not bad, kind of a country-rock feel, but not a bad song. Pretty good actually.

A Shot in the Arm - Wilco Ah, Wilco. not as good as some of their other songs but still pretty good.

Nobody's Perfect - Dios got a Radiohead feel from this track. (Fitting I guess since the next song is Radiohead) will def. have to look more of their stuff up.

Bonus tracks (?) not listed on tracklisting

??? this track is only 23 seconds long and none of my players will play it. Is it silence?

Follow Me Around - Radiohead Knew it was Radiohead, a little google search got me the title of the song. Good song, apparently only on the "Meeting People is Easy" DVD.

Drowned - The Who If that's not Pete Townshend's guitar and Roger Daltrey's voice then I'm Barbera Walters. Google agrees with me, yay. Though the brass section is a little too similar to another Who song, it's still welcome. great song that reminds me I need to listen to Quadrophenia more often.

Final Thoughts
So this was my first mix exchange. All-in-all it was fun hearing the new music. I now know some of the finer points of the way the exchange takes place as well so the next one should be much more interesting. And maybe my next mix won't be so offensive to some.

Also, listening to these mixes and knowing what I put on my own mix I realize that the two are so very different and I wondered if anyone would even like some of the songs. And I really should have limited it to one disc, looking back.

Alas, I am still out of town and away from the mixes. Sorry gang! I'll be putting up reviews early in the new year.

the 23 second song is just a blank song I stole from Summerteeth album, I was originally going to toss in two random bonus tracks, but screwed up. A couple cds did end up with different tracks at the end, but I don't think anyone from Gaming-Age got them.

I need to finish my reviews, it hard to get time to listen to them being around family so much. I hope to have Hotarubi's mix reviewed tonight though.

sp0rsk mix

I get gibberish for most of the track titles, and the m3u was not made correctly. I could not successfuly edit it, either, so I'll just go by whatever order Winamp put them into.

Track 01
Started out somewhat on an interesting note with some old school-ish sci-fi bleepings before going into very straightforward piano plonking and predictable vocalising. A bit more fun once the song picks up pace, but this is typical fare. The kind of stuff you'd hear at the earliest opportunity in many family-oriented Japanese films or a lot of Anime.

Halcali - something I can't read
This is more like it. This one's got a familiar composition, reminding of one of those songs I had to dance to in School when I was in the single digits. The name escapes me... catchy as heck, and actually has a bit of punch to it. I would have liked to hear this with an overdriven beat and some nasty bass. That would have been killer.

Track 03
Retro guitar synth horror, complete with dodgy chimey wind things and 80's vocals. I can't believe they're releasing stuff like this in 2003, if the id3 tag is to be believed. That aside, I love it. It does everything right -- slick production, awful keyboard abuse, bad vocal effects and a diabolical guitar solo that bring up vivid imagery of big hair, padded jackets and tights. Wonderful.

Track 04
More retro fun, but this time with some fonkay bass work and crap background "oooohhh-ing". Awfuly catchy. Can't help but nod along to this and sing along to the occasional English vocal ("lets kiss the sun, lets kiss the suuuuuun!!"). Great stuff.

Flipper's Guitar - Young, Alive, In Love
A Jazzy track. Completely unremarkable. Vocals and composition you can predict minutes beforehand, underwhelming musicianship -- none of the instruments shine and seem packed together into a mush of sound with some occasional xylophone and guitar plucking inexplicably taking most of the sound-stage.

Track 06
Even more retro pop. Much like track 03, but without the extravagance. If this track didn't have a strong chorus it'd have been somewhat irrelevent in the mix, at this point, but it proves catchy and strong enough to hold its own with the other 2 J-Pop abberrations.

Something I can't read - Young oh! oh!
Weeee! Dodgy sugary retro rock. Wicked. Jangly guitar hell, noodly synth horn workouts, and passionate vocalising with plenty of background "oooohhh-ing". Fantastic. Even better thanks to the awesome middle intermission with "do-do-do" vocals attacking your ears from both channels. They get their balls out at the end with the silly guitar solos... I wish this would go on forever.

Fantastic Plastic Machine - Komm Und Spiel Mit Mir / Manfred Krug
Jazzy Trip-Hoppery sung in German. Very tame production which whimpers along with no conviction. Even the horns sound like mosquito farts. Not a whole lot to redeem this track, I'm afraid.

Hall & Oates - Family Man
So bad it's brilliant. Best track on the mix, hands down. Possibly the worst lyrics ever written, but it just adds to the greatness. A true musical paradox. I will have this on repeat for days, no, weeks.

Pizzicato Five - Something I can't read
Hmm... on the one hand I like the electro-ish production with its well placed sounds and alternating "ah's", but the vocals are so predictable and "safe" that it drags the whole thing down and places it firmly in mediocre territory. Disappointing.

Namco feat. Shigeru Matsuzaki - Ai no Katamari [Ending]
Good lord this awful. The opening is enough to have me gritting my teeth. Horrible crooning and overly dramatic orchestration leading into bad synth plinkety-plonking and other unmentionable instrument abuse. Run for your lives before the chorus hits, or even worse, the spoken intermission. Of course, it would never be complete without a shouted "C'MON!!" followed by the worst guitar solo ever. Like Michael Bolton on mushrooms.

Track 12
This is Simply fantastic. It sounds very old... I have no information whatsoever regarding when this track was recorded, by who, how etc. but It's like western style mixed with traditional Japanese. It has a crackle and warmth to it that's just wonderful, as if it was recorded from vinyl or an old worn out, tape. The vocals are just fabulous. It was truly a pleasure to listen to this one. I wish I knew more about it

A Flock of Seaguls - Space Age Love Song
Wicked. Again back with the retro rock, this time on a melodic, epic tip. Killer guitar work... it'll have you foot-tapping, and making crap faces while playing air guitar in seconds. Very straightforward, driving track that doesn't deviate a whole lot from its formula, yet stays short enough to not overstay its welcome. Excellent. I don't know if this was the intended order, but this was the perfect way to end the mix. Love it.

Closing thoughts.
Wow, what fun I had listening to this! Some clangers, but also enough high points that should not be missed by anyone who loves their 80s pop-rock. Taken as a whole, it's hugely enjoyable, and most of the downers don't stand out as much as they do when listened to individualy, making for a truly enjoyable listening session. Big ups, sp0rsk.

Unfortunately, Duke didn't even bother. AstroLad's mix has been reviewed, so I guess that covers all my teams mixes... cheers!

Hotarubi's Mix

1. Futureheads - Hounds of Love: I like the vocals at the beginning (the oh, ohs that continue through most of the song). Its a fun song, I enjoyed it quite a bit.

2. The Go! Team - Power is On: The first time I listened to your mix, this song annoyed the hell out of me, however on subsequent listens it grew on me. I still can't tell if they are saying/singing anything, or if it is just gibberish. The backing music is great though. Are all thier songs have the same kind of vocal styles?

3. Q and Not U - Wonderful People: I remember some band at Coachella telling us to go see these guys, but I didn't listen to him. Its an alright song, I don't really like the bass part, but I do like the chorus part, "People Running, Running.."

4. Hot Snakes - Plenty for All: I really liked this song

5. Say Anything - The Futile: This guys voice sounds familiar, but I can't place it. I didn't really like this song, I don't know why, but unlike the Go! Team, subsequent listens to this song just annoyed me more.

6. Death From Above 1979 - Romantic Rights: Good harder song, I remember seeing them recommended elsewhere on this board, I'll have to check out thier album.

7. Tom Waits - Hoist that Rag: I love the solo part of the song about 2:30 into it. I also dig the raw sound of his voice and guitar. Good stuff

8. Paul Pena - Gonna Move: I like this song, like the bass line in it, and the guys voice. I am trying to get into more of this type of music.

9. Wilco - Hummingbird (Soma Version): The album version of this song was one of my favorites off thier latest record, but I don't like this version as much. Where is it from though?

10. Bright Eyes - Hit THE Switch: Its alright, I like Bright Eyes in small doses.

11. The Comas - Science of Your Mind: Love this song, dig the space-pop-psych vibes from it.

12. Earlimart - First Instance Last Report: This guy's voice reminds me of Elliott Smith. Nice song.

13. Now It's Overheard - Wait in Line: This band sounds like it has potential to be something pretty interesting, but this song doesn't really do anything for me.

14. Blockhead - Insomniac Olympics: I like the trumpet part, great mostly instrumental track. Nice and relaxing, without being boring.

15. Mouse on Mars - Wipe That Sound: Pretty different from the stuff I ussually listen to, but still pretty enjoyable for the most part.

16. Razorlight - Golden Touch: I like the guitar part at the beginning. Its not really complex, but its nice and goes well with the song. I like the vocals in the song too, especially the build up to the end part.

17. Beck - Debra: I find this song pretty funny. I also love how between the four of us, we had three Beck songs, eahc which sound completely different. Yeah for Beck.

18. James Brown - There Was a Time: Great song. But then again, its James Brown, so thats almost a given.

19. LCD Soundsystem - Yeah (Crass Version) vs Beat Connection: I am not familiar with LCD Soundsystem at all, is this some kind of mix up between one of thier songs, and a song by Crass (who I have only heard one song by them, and it sounded nothing like anything in this song)? Of course Crass could just be used here as an adjective, not a noun. Oh well. Its a pretty good song, not the kind of stuff I normall listen to, but alright nonetheless.

Next up one of Bune Duggy's mixes.

Ill, thanks for the reviews (ill get to everyones when i get back to memphis) although it appears the tracks are out of order, oh well.

There is a part 2 mix (indiemix.zip) just in case you didnt get it already

Sorry...was just re-reading the thread.

I'm guessing it's a reference to Sugar, right? Now THERE is a band that more people should listen to...

We have a winner. I prefer Husker Du, but Sugar have some really great tracks, and they're a lot more accessible to those with mainstream sensibilities than Husker Du.

Also, sorry to those in my group for not completing reviews yet, I've been away from my main pc for a week. I'll try to get it done soon.

Hitman

Edmonton's milkshake attracts no boys.
Review of meatpuppet's mix: File Under Easy Listening.

The Cure - A Forest: I've been meaning to get into The Cure's stuff for some time now. I love their sound. This is a good song, i like the originality of the little air synth sound although it can get annoying. 8/10

Queens of the Stone Age - Auto Pilot: I did'nt like this song on first listen, but the catchy chorus grew on me and the guitar work is fun to listen to. 6/10

Kyuss - Size Queen: Did'nt really like this one at all. The vocals I can stand, but the song seems very boring to me throughout and i did'nt really like the parts where it actually did try to get interesting. 3/10

Mark Lanegan - Hit The City: One of the only songs I liked off of Bubblegum. Love the subtle organs throughout. Only knock against the song is that it is pretty static. 7/10

Nirvana - Lithium: My favourite Nirvana song period. 9/10

Husker Du - Don't want to know if you are lonely: Lots of energy to this song, nothign special about it though. Did'nt really like this one. 4/10

Meatpuppets - backwater: Loved the guitar work on this one. I never heard of the Meatpuppets before, but i'll look into them after listneing to this song. 8/10

Frank Black - Oddball: Fun song, I have'nt listened to too many of Frank Black's solo efforts. 7/10

Guided by Voices - Do the Earth: This song really grew on me. I find myself attempting to sing-a-long with it even though I don't know any of the lyrics. The breakdown part I don't like very much tho. 7/10

Drive-By-Truckers - The Day John Henry Died: It sounds so very average to me. Nothing speical about this one but sitll listenable. It sounds like something I might catch on the radio and keep on jus cause the other radio stations are playing the usual crap. 5/10

Rocket From the Crypt - I'm not invisible: Don't like this one at all. Sounds too skaterish for me. 3/10

Pixies - Tame: Almost everything off Doolittle I liked. I beleive it is their best album. Tame is'nt one of my favourite Pixies songs but its still really good. 7/10

Hot Snakes - Hair and DNA: Their elements in this song I liked but nothing really clicked with me. 4/10

Sweaty Kids - Maximum Rock: Not really listenable for me. Although it does sound like something that's my style. 3/10

Overall, I liked this mix alot, mostly for the standout tunes in it. The songs I liked off this mix have been plaiyng on repeat this last week in my car.

And here's my mix exchange reviews. Suerte, I didn't get your mix until today so give me a few days to check it out & get back to ya.

Eminem's mix:

IntenCity - ATB - The only trance I have use for is when I'm playing DDR. Sorry, this isn't my thang.

Killing - The Rapture - Kinda funky at first, but quickly turned boring. Also, I can't stand the guys' voice.

The Canyon Behind Her - Dredg - I appreciate all the genre-hopping going on, but I can't say I really liked this song very much. The acapella at the end is gorgeous, though.

Oblivion - 30 Seconds to Mars - Too much double bass pedal action & angst. I liked this song the best so far, but that's still not saying much.

Amputee - Oceansize - I liked the music in this track, but the dude singing was just too earnest for my tastes.

Sleep Through This - Onesidezero - I'm getting a really uncomfortable Creed-esque vibe from this one.

Carry You - The Fire Theft - It's okay. I see a video with a lot of passionate dudes pleading with their girlfriends.

Accolade II - Symphony X - Oh god, this song is bad. I don't feel as guilty for liking Rush after hearing this.

How Near How Far - ...and you will know us by the trail of dead - Now, THIS I like. A LOT. I didn't know this was aywkubttod until I looked at my iPod; this is probably the shortest, most radio-friendly track i've heard from them. Excellent!

Happiness By the Kilowatt - Alexisonfire - I kinda dug this song. The drum pattern & time signature is very interesting, but I don't think it meshed well into the chorus. I even found the cookiemonsta vocals tolerable!

Ain't Love Grand - Atreyu - I really, really liked this song at first - but when the cookiemonsta vocals kicked in, I couldn't deal with it. When did this kind of vocal styling become popular? It needs to go back to the underground. And then the first verse is repeated - man, this is dope, why does this guy have to sing like he's a Doom III extra?

San Sebastian - Sonata Arctica Oh man, this is bad too. I feel like I'm playing Virtua Tennis. I can't take this.

Falling to Grey - Trivium - this is like the worst parts of all the previous songs mashed into one. I feel like I'm back in my military school days, putting up with my heshen roommate.

The Mountain - Devildriver - you really like this?

On the Bright Side, She Could Choke - Fear Before the March of Flames - ah man, once again, it started out really good by I can't take this shrieking vocal stuff. I'm going to pass this on to my metalhead friend and see what she thinks - I'll get back to you.

Slaughter of the Soul - At the Gates - I can't ever think of a time that this would be something that I would listen to.

When the Sun Sleeps - Underoath - I need some lozenges after all this.

Eminem, you have quite varied tastes, but this isn't something I would keep on the iPod.

Fifty's mix:

Clarity - Jimmy Eat World - This is like the opposite end of the angst spectrum that Eminem's mix was all about. I don't care enough to really pay attention to the words, but they're really earnest about whatever they're singing about.

Away From the Sun - Audioslave - Before I comment on the song, I want to talk about how I don't really understand "Audioslave". The dudes that were so political in RAtM are content enough with their riches to provide the backing band for Chris Cornell? And Chris Cornell was willing to get into a band full of politik-rawkers heretofore, and have the fucking cojones to ask them to, hey, pipe down with the political commentary? Nice integrity on all parts. But the song is alright though. Eh.

Rosies - Amon Tobin - Hey, here's somebody I know! Mr. Tobin is pretty hit-or-miss to me. He's a helluva D&B DJ, and I like some of his solo stuff.... but not of all it. This track is okay. I like the guitar hook, and the mellow orchestration in some parts, but then the thudding beat comes in and it's all too, I dunno... industrial sounding for my tastes. It would probably sound dope in the atmospheric part of a Steven Soderbergh flick.

Sublimor - Rinocerose - Oh, man.... there's some house music that I like, and others that I don't. This falls into the latter category. I do like the jazzy groove, but it's all too samey for me. Boring.

We've Got a Long Way to Go - Andre 3000 & Gwen Stefani - I was definitely prepared to hate on this song, as my ex-girlfriend was a big time No Doubt fan and.... ugh. But then the fast-paced beats come in and, not bad, not bad! I'm definitely feeling the interracial luv message goin' on, even if it's a little heavy handed by the end of the track. I would definitely shake my ass and spill a bit of my drink to this jawn up in the club, yaknowhatimsayin!? *ahem* Lovely horns at the end.

Sleep Tonite - Stars - Hey were these the same cats that did a song called "Write What You Know" - a very Postal Service-esque jam with a liberal usage of a "When the Levee Breaks" sample? I dunno, this doesn't really sound like them. I like the girls' voice, but that off-kilter organ in the backround is really limiting my enjoyment of this song. Man I'm going to barf! That song would've been wonderful without that.

Pounding - Doves - I like the drivin' beat, and Jimi Goodwin has a beautiful voice. Thumbs up!

Crabbuckit - K-Os - Oh shit, what is this?! Wait, is this US3? *checks iPod* I don't like this. It's too alterna-rap for me. Like Me Phi Me. But I'm all for people doing different shit, and I'd much rather hear this 100,000,000 times a day than, say, "Lean Back".

Song of the Hip-Hop Rabbits - The Kleptones - This is dope! The drum programming and chord changes are all over the fucking place, ahhhhh I really dig this.

Your Ex-Lover is Dead - Stars - You like this band, eh Fifty? I like this song a lot more than the other track on here (although I would like the other better if it wasn't for that damn organ). The breakdown is nice, "live through this / and you won't look back". I can dig it! This would go on like, the bitter break-up tape with an ex that you kinda still like but sucks, regardless. Lovely orchestration throughout.

Dead Disco - Metric - It's alright, but homegirls' ironic vocals wore thin by the end. "Tits out, pants down / overnight to London / touchdown, look around / everyone's the same" is a hot line no matter how you slice it. I do like this new disco / new-wave sound that seems to be very popular nowadays. That keyboard at the end ties it all together perfectly!

Flite - Cinematic Orchestra - Cinematic Orchestra - taking up space on my iPod since I got it two years ago. Love this song! "All That You Are" and "Your Ex-Lover is Dead" would sound nice together, while we're at it!

Bug Powder Dust (K&D Session Mix) - Bomb the Bass feat. Justin Warfield - It's okay. While I like the backing arrangement, I think the La Funk Mob remix of this song is the best of the 87 different versions of this song out there. I don't like the way his vocals sound against this beat.

Slowhand Hussein - Dzihan & Kamien - This is crazy boring, to me. Also, they ripped the drums fucking wholesale from another song - it's a Mo' Wax joint, I know it, it's on the tip of my tounge... ah fuck! Can't remember. DJ Krush? Bugger! I mean, I'd put this on for backing music for a romantic interlude in a pinch... but nah, I wouldn't listen to this on the regular.

oh shit i said i'd review quadrophenic's mix like a week ago. so here it is, late, but there:

1. the kinks - big sky
this song was ok. it opens the mix on kind of a slow note, so at this point i kind of figured i'd be in for a lot of slower rock. anyways i thought it was ok.

2. the walkmen - that's the punchline
i don't really like the walkmen too much, well at least not right now. i mean the song is fine, but i'm just not feeling it. kind of long, especially at the pace of the song.

3. beck - already dead
i like pretty much all of sea change, but this is one of my lesser liked songs. although this song reminds me of "no rain" by blind melon in it's lyrical melody, it's still good.

4. the decemberists - los angeles, i'm yours
i really really really love "her majesty, the decemberists." there's seriously not a song on that album that i don't like. excellent song.

5. the mountain goats - going to georgia
a lo-fi love song. although i don't like the sound of some of the vocals, but there's a lot of feeling there and i like the spoken parts a lot. a pretty solid song.

6. the zombies - smokey day
sort of folky and rocky. pretty nice song, albeit a little slow for my tastes; somebody else recommended the zombies to me awhile ago but i never really got around to listening to them much.

7. neutral milk hotel - holland, 1945
probably my favorite neutral milk hotel song on "in the aeroplane over the sea." cool horn parts, distorted guitars, and great vocals. quality.

8. the black keys - 10am automatic
good rockin song. although the guitar solo at about 2:35 or so that came in pretty much entirely out of my left headphone scared the bejeezus out of me.

9. fugazi - do you like me
i liked the noisy, eclectic start to this song, and then when the actual song started i liked it too. which is good considering i don't really like fugazi that much.

10. red red meat - rabbit eyed
back to slower stuff now, and i thought this song was too...um quiet. the volume isn't quite at the same level as the mix, and consequently i didn't like it that much. well i don't thin i liked it that much anyways.

11. slint - good morning, captain
long, repetitive, and droning. excellent. kind of post-rockish, math rockish, and never really going anywhere. and i liked it a lot, despite the fact that the vocals were hard to hear.

12. sonic youth - rain king
whenever i listen to something like sonic youth it just reminds me that grunge has died and that is sad. well i would consider it grunge anyways. good song, and it's disappointing that i don't know of as much stuff like this anymore.

13. beulah - matter vs. space
beulah is pretty sweet i think. nice and sweet, and a good balance of mellowness and rocking. great vocals, backup vocals, and guitar parts. synth parts pretty nice too.

14. of montreal - how lester lost his wife
nice power pop song, i've been meaning to listen to of montreal, and i keep putting it off or forgetting about getting something by them. and now i like this song so i should get on it.

15. the flaming lips - kim's watermelon gun
i like most stuff by the flaming lips, and this song is no exception. i especially like the chorus of this song. and flaming lips' vocals always sound good to me.

16. the long winters - scared straight
i like about half of "when i pretend to fall," i think half the songs have a perfect balance of cheese and quality lyrics, and this one is one of my favorites. good horn part, and i love their vocals.

17. wilco - a shot in the arm
i like this song. i don't really like "summerteeth" all that much, but this is one of the better songs on there as far as i'm concerned. it's a good song with some build ups though.

18. dios - nobody's perfect
i almost put some dios stuff on my mixes, and i probably would've included this song, it's my favorite on their self-titled album.

19. 23 seconds of silence apparently which leads us to...hidden stuff, which isn't really hidden because you can just skip the silence track :p

i might be wrong on these 2 last two:

20. radiohead - follow me around
can't really go wrong with radiohead. i like this style of stuff slightly less than the really melancholy stuff of "ok computer," it's more straightforward rock, but it's still really good. this is a different version of this song than i've heard before though.

21. the who - drowned
nice piano part at the start, good guitars, good song. i think i've only heard another version of this, i haven't really listened to the who for a really long time, so maybe i'm wrong. i just remember it vaguely different.

overall: this mix started off kind of slow (which i guess i shouldn't complain about because my mixes were pretty loaded with slow stuff) and then got quicker and better. it did have a nice flow from the slow to the fast though, it happened pretty gradually i guess. other than the first two tracks, i really liked most of this: a lot of power pop styled rock both old and new. not only that, but it came very very well packaged, it looks like quadrophenic spent some time putting this together, which is always a really nice touch. i need to get a cd labeling kit or something.

Review for JackFrost's mix:

All These Things That I've Done- The Killers: It's good, very upbeat and energetic. It's nothing too original that hasn't been done, but it's still good. I especially like when they begin chanting "I've got soul but I'm not a soldier". The best track that I've heard from them thus far. 7.5/10

Shadow Stabbing- Cake: I've always enjoyed Cake, though never hearing anything other than his singles. This has a bit of a different feel to it than the singles, a bit more laid back, but still fun. Not as crazy as his other work, but enjoyable nonetheless. 7/10

Rebel Rebel- David Bowie: Bowie has always made music that I enjoy. This is no exception. The slow opening makes for a good reaction to the suddenly enthused chorus. One of Bowie's best guitar hooks are used in this song. I like this song quite a bit. 8/10

Sometimes- James: This feels very familiar, though I know I've never heard it before. Sounds like a number of artists, but not one in particular. I'm very unfamiliar with his work. The chorus feels a little sappy, but it's not bad. I'd say this song is average, not great, but I can still listen to it and enjoy. 5/10

Burning Hearts- My Favorite: I like this, very melodic, pretty, nice voice. Wait, the girl is singing "I was an architect, she was an actress", and it sounds almost romantic. OMG! Is she in love with a lady!? Kinky! Cools! Anyway, good song, very catchy. 6.5/10

(a bunch of symbols on itunes that I won't try to copy here)- Cocco: The music is very pretty. The guitar especially is very pretty. I wish I could understand what the girl was singing, I may like the song more. At times it feels almost cheesy from how pretty it is, but it's still enjoyable. Not bad. 5/10

Through the Walls- RJD2: I've been wondering what this group sounds like; I've been hearing positive things. I can sorta see why. It reminds me a lot of the eighties. Ooh, is that piano coming in? Ooh, I like that. Ooh! Now the piano is by itself! With drumming! Synthesizer!? What are you doing hogging in on the piano!? No! You don't fit there! Yay! You're back! Huzzah for musical chorus! Oh guitar, your distortion is kinda cheesy, as is the solo. I want more piano! None!? BALLS TO THAT! 6/10

Maps- Yeah Yeah Yeahs: Ooh, I woke up with this song in my head this morning. It's good. Quite good. I have recently come to like the Triple Yeahs very much. The chorus is definately the high point of the song; I love the sound of the guitar. Very good, and a relaxing turn from their normal, aggressive, yet good repetoire. 8.5/10

New Health Rock- TV on the Radio: Good, another group I've been meaning to listen to. I like the chorus. Good stuff. Me likee. 6.5/10

Sweethearts- Camper Van Beethoven: Yay! More pretty music! I like the guitar in this. I'm getting lazy in my reviews. I may look into this band more. 7/10

Rebellion- The Arcade Fire: Everyone seemed to want some Arcade Fire in their mixes this time around. Understandably so, it's pretty good. What can I say- I like the Arcade Fire. 7.5/10

Frontin Without You- Pharrell feat. Jay Z vs. U2: An interesting choice for your mix, doesn't seem to fit in with everything else from the title. However, it's pretty relaxed and good. Parts remind me a lot of Prince. But Prince is good, so this is acceptable. A surprisingly good song. 7/10

Convertibles and Headbands- The American Song-Poem Anthology: Wow, this sounds old, but I learn that the album was released in 2003. Is it a compilation? Surely it must be. Still, a pretty good song. Another odd choice for the mix. Still, I like it. Though not the best choice to end a mix with in my opinion. 5.5/10

In total, this mix was pretty good. Some things didn't quite seem to flow, but it was still a good collection of songs. I give this mix a: 6.7/10

My review for FnordChan's mix. I can already tell that this will be the strangest mix I am yet to review.

Theme from the 1988 Morris Dancer Massacre- Shitmat: Hehe, this band is called Shitmat. Wow, this is fast and crazy. The part when the voice comes in is pretty cool. Though I must admit I am not a fan of electronic music, this is pretty interesting. 5/10

Jah Vengeance- Vivian Jackson and the Sons of Jah: Hmm, I like the instrumentation on this. The horns and such add a nice feel. More interesting than most reggae I hear. Tis goodly. 6.5/10

Jah Jah Children- Sugar Minott: Another interesting reggae song. Has a different feel than most reggae I hear. Very pretty and relaxing. 6/10

Pick a Sound- Selah Collins: Whoa, that beeping noise kinda scared me when it first came in. It's not bad, not my kind of music though. Kinda boring, very basic sounding. 3/10

Island in Video Cassett- Nakaido Reichi: This is soundtrack music, and I must admit that I would like this more if it were in a movie. However, by itself it feels very lacking and a bit boring. Not something I would listen to often. 3/10

Automatic- Pointer Sisters: It's good from a dance music perspective. But considering I don't dance and don't normally like dance music, I am unsurprised to find out I don't like this one a whole lot. I've heard this song a lot before though. No idea where. It's decent, good for dancing. 4/10

Who is This America Dem Speak of Today- Antibalas: I've been hearing good things about this album, seen it on the boards here and various best of 2004 lists. I really like when the horns come in, it adds a nice funky feel to it. I think I can actually say that I like this song. 6.5/10

Ololufe Mi- Koola Lobitos: Not too bad, has a nice feel to it. I like the voice of the singer here. Very jazzy and danceable. 4/10

Riot- Joe Bataan: This song is pretty good, has a nice old feel to it. Kinda fun. 5/10

Take Five- Tito Puente: Very jazzy, good horns, not bad. Sounds familiar. The piano is pretty interesting. 5/10

Velouria- The Bad Plus: I like the slow rising action in this song. The piano is all pretty-like and enjoyable. I am surprised to like this song. I like how it feels to slowly go into chaos with the slowly increasing drums. The sudden change from chaos to excited harmony is very interesting. Again, I am surprised to like this song. Good bass. And again, exceptional piano. 8/10

Moon River- Vince Guaraldi Trio: A good relaxing jazz song to end the mix. Very pretty. I guess I like jazz. Didn't really know that before. Cool. Cat. Cool. 6.5/10

Upon first view of the tracklist, I was certain I would dislike this mix. Not one rock song! However, I was surprised to find just how much I enjoyed some parts of this mix. I never realized it before, but I guess I do like jazz. Some recommendations on jazz artists and albums to look into would be helpful. Unfortunately, besides the jazz and reggae, I did not get much into the mix. Therefore, I must give this a 5/10.

Okay guys in my group, I did all of my reviews. I can now ask with a clear conscience: Where the hell are my reviews? Not one? Come on! You've had this for weeks! Weeks! I wouldn't mind so much if you were doing each other's reviews and making your way to mine, but that's not even the case! You haven't reviewed anything! Pick up the pace, slackers!

That was slightly tongue in cheek, but still, get to them soon please.

I'm just back from vacation this week; once things calm down at work, I'll be able to crank out reviews. Sorry for the delay, everyone!

Meanwhile, thanks for your review of my own mix, which appeared to be a case of my sending you a bunch of music that just isn't really your thing. Ah well. Still, glad you found some songs on there to dig on. As for jazz recommendations, try the albums the last two songs came from:

B000000YO6.01._SCLZZZZZZZ_.jpg

That's "Give" by The Bad Plus and "Jazz Impressions of Black Orpheus" by the Vince Guaraldi Trio. I'll also throw in recommendations for "The Blues and the Abstract Truth" by Oliver Nelson and "Blue Train" by John Coltrane. Once you've dug around some, start up a seperate jazz thread and folks can throw recommendations at you from there.

Hail to the KING baby
Fuck this really sucks. I was on the last song of my review, and I went to Winamp and my MOTHERFUCKING LAPTOP did its lovely "I'll randomly close a window" thing. FUCKFUCKFUCKFUCKFUCKFUCK. Anyway, I'll do my best to recover. Apologies for the delay, but I have been listening to this for the past three weeks or so, which is nice, and now I finally have a chance to write something (well, again, now).

Illsaint's Mix

1. Newworldaquarium- Trespassers.

This is a very nice track. Most of these are quite long, and at 11 minutes this is the longest, but for me it's actually a perfect song. I mostly listen to music while walking around Manhattan and this is truly perfect "walking music" for that kind of setting. I like the way it closes out, and really I quite enjoy the whole damn thing, especially listening to it while I'm out and about.

2. Shed- Cup of Coffee.

This one is a little slow to start, and while most of these tracks build up to something cool whenever they're slow, this one just has these beeps that I can't get out of my head and that really distract from the rest of the track.

3. Unit Moebius- Biosoft.

For some reason this song really reminds me of playing Rez. The drums are nice, and the whole thing is just pretty cool, perhaps because of the Rez evocativeness, but whatever works I suppose. A relatively short track, but a perfect length for the song.

4. Carl Craig- At Les.

I really like this track. It's got a very nice, almost upbeat kind of quietness to it in parts. The whole thing is really pretty subtle and really just grabs me within the first minute. Once the drums kick in later, it's really got me hooked.

5. Drexciya- Black Sea.

Great companion track in my mind with "At Les." A perfect complement. This song feels very dark and foreboding (though not in a cornball way, in a really nice atmospheric way). I can't really tell how much I would like it on its own, but with the previous tracks it just goes along perfectly. Nice choice.

6. Quadrant- II.

Maybe my least favorite track. I just find it kind of boring, nothing really grabs me like most of the other tracks. I can't really comment other than to say it's competent I suppose, but just doesn't excite me like the other stuff.

7. Underground Resistance- Untitled (A1).

This is a nice pick-up and a good position for this track. It's maybe slightly grating in parts, but does enough interesting things that it doesn't get repetitive or dull. Solid stuff. This is beeps done right! ;)

8. Legowelt- Total Pussy Control.

Ah, the wacky track name. And a fittingly wacky track! This one is really fun. I love all the stuff they do. It starts out with a drum which seems like it will dominate, but then that gets submerged under all of the other stuff. I like the vocals too.

9. Nimoy- 1981.

A bit unexciting. I don't quite understand why it takes 30 seconds to get started, but that kind of get me off to a bad start, especially after the previous track which is just pure goodness throughout. Another competent, if slightly boring, track. Feels a little long at around 7 minutes.

10. Model 500- I Wanna Be There (edit).

Good end-of-mix kind of song. It doesn't have anything particularly memorable about it, but the whole thing together works nicely. My only gripe is with the vocals, which don't seem to add much.

11. Ross 154- Moon FM Desire.

Another longie-but-goodie. Great ambient music. Perfect close-out track. I really like the melody, it almost has a haunting feeling to it.
