Would the performance of the MSI 1762 (i7 3630 and GTX 680M) exceed the the SLI 750M Lenovo Y500?

I know they are not in the same price range or the same screen size, but I am looking for the best gaming laptop I could get for a reasonable price.

Based solely off of notebookcheck , it looks like yes - the GTX 680M out performs the 750M SLI. By how much is still to be seen though. I should have my machine tomorrow and will be posting my impressions (on the Y500).

The GTX 680M is 3x faster than the single GT 750M. There's no close comparison to be made, even if the latter is in SLI.

OK does the Y500 SLI 750 not have an optical drive? I am really tempted, and I want to make sure i get the most bang for my buck on this Laptop purchase.

I know right now the only surefire way to get a 750 Y500 is through Lenovo, but does anyone have an idea as to when they will roll out to other vendors?

No, the SLI model does not ship with an optical drive, but you can order one along with the laptop, through Lenovo. The 2nd 750M and the ODD are designed to be hot swappable, meaning they slide in and out as you see fit.

I returned my Y500. 15.6" laptop is simply too big and I have it hooked up to a 24" monitor anyway.

I exchanged it for the Y400 same specs and I'm pretty happy with that. Windows 8 is pretty nice too.

For an even smaller option, in June, Clevo is putting out a 13" with a GTX 765M.

I'm in love with my Y500.

Mine is pretty sweet too, but I'm having a weird issue with the battery. I only ever use it plugged in, so it's always at 100%. After I shut it down for a few hours (or the night), upon turning it on later, the battery is at 88-94%. I thought it might be the "always on" USB, but I checked in the BIOS and it's disabled, so I'm stumped.

As for performance, I'm running the single GT750M. Tomb Raider runs smoothly (40FPS or so) on high at 1080p, or smoothly on ultra at 720p.

I'm getting the flickering issue with TR, though. Apparently it's bad with nvidia cards. Wish I knew that before I bought it :lol. There aren't any drivers for the 750M yet, so hopefully they release some soon.

I love my Y500 as well with 750 SLI. I've only been using Unity and playing PSO2, but it's been running like butter.

My only complaint is Windows 8. I really don't like it. At all. I'm sticking with it because I have heard of some troubles getting 7 running on it, but if I can get confirmation and/or ease of installation tips, I may transition.

Also, I don't know if this is USB slot specific or if its related to my portable, but sometimes, the machine won't pick up my portable when I plug it in.

E: Oh, and one other thing...I have kept mine on AC power since I've had it. The battery sits on the table. I found that running games on battery throttled the machine. Maybe there's a setting I can change for it?

All this Y500 750m talk is making me jelly. Does anyone know when Lenovo plan to release the 750m models in Europe? At the moment I'm holding off on my purchase until they show up.

Nope. CPU + GPU draw too much load power for the battery to handle, thus the throttling. This is the case for every gaming laptop out there. You'd damage the battery if you force them to run at full speed.

Ok, that's reassuring. I'll save the battery for travel and keep gaming to plugged in.

I really want to get as powerful as possible with this budget. I'm thinking about starting with the XoticPC Force 1762 and upgrading the CPU and the Hard drive on the site. Unless there is a better deal out there what are your thoughts on this?

Also, I've been around enough to know about the haswell and nvidia refresh in june but is waiting for it truly worth it? I've heard that the refresh isn't that big of a jump from the current mobile GPUs.

GTX 780M benchmarks leaks are trickling from China, and it's looking an easy 30% faster than the GTX 680M. I'm waiting for that.

Guys, I need some help.
I'm Mexican (living in Mexico, obviously) and I'd like to get a new laptop for school since mine heathens too much by just watching simple youtube videos and using cd's and dvd's on it is a pain. I need it mainly for school porpuses but now that I seem to get some decent budget this summer (like 10,000 pesos = 800 dollars approximately) I really would like to get into pc gaming (multiplatform titles, indie stuff, eclusives, lots of emulation, maybe a MMO, so basically everything :p). I haven't had a gaming pc before and I don't understand much about the technical things, so please understand my situation. I'd like you to suggest me some decent gaming laptops that would run the multiplatform stuff at 30 fps or something that is decent enough to make them playable (games like crysis 3 and battlefield 3? and the next generation stuff which I hope is like those games). I don't care much about resolution but if 720p is possible then is perfect. About the money, recommend me laptops above what I said because I want to know how much more I'd have to save or borrow for the laptop and maybe my father could give me some extra so don't limit yourselves with the budget I'll have, I may buy this laptop until december to have a lot. I don't want it to be very heathen while doing school stuff because I hate those slowdowns mine has. About battery, 2 or 3 hours is good but I want to have this laptop for at least 5 years, since that is my planed time to finish my career. So could you also provide me some online or physical stores to know where can I get some decent prices here (everything here is way more expensive than in the US, unfortunately).
That's all guys, I hope this is not a pain to read, I fear my english is confusing at times lol

This really made me laugh.

I'm going to say that, just like 90% of the other recommendations, a Lenovo Y500 is probably what you will want.

Why?

Well, seems like a good option, is it good for my standards? The price seems affordable to me, which is perfect. Now let's save some more.

Thanks for that.

Also, if anyone has another recomendation, it will be most welcomed.

And before I regret it, do some PC games (even indies) have local multiplayer mode? Can I use xbox controllers or multiple keyboards for that? I'm asking so I will know how much I'd have to spend.

I'm looking into getting a laptop good/great for gaming and HD video editing. I have a steam account with games like Bioshock and Darksiders waiting to be played.

I'm also a student so will be using it for schoolwork and will be multi-tasking, etc.

Budget is $1000 or below.

I was looking into lenovo ideapad y500 but the plastic finish dissuaded me from getting it.

Lenovo Y500 seems like a perfect option for me, though I'm still unsure about overheating problems. Does it have it or does it remain cool?

Also, is there any webpage that has it at a good price with international shipping? Because that laptop is not avaliable here in Mexico and the only place that can get it does it for a lot more cash than what you can find in the US.

Edit: Does it run Super smash bros brawl at a decent framerate? I'd love to do some multiplayer at my friend's house someday

Well I realised that I can't get away with using my work laptop forever, so it's time to bite the bullet I feel.

Country: UK
Budget: £600-700
Max size: Somewhere around 15 inches, would like a decent resolution though, 1080p if possible.
Planned usage: Gaming, but not hardcore. Basically I'm interested in playing games that are out now or coming soon well, and anything after that can take a hit. Ideally this would be light so I can carry it around with me, but that's not a dealbreaker. Basically I'm looking for something close to £600 that I can quite happily game on for as long as is reasonable at that price. I don't play a lot of performance heavy games, but as my last laptop chugged playing TF2 I'd like to try out some stuff I've missed. Obviously I've seen the Lenovo Y500 recommended here a lot, but is there anything closer to £650 or so that won't be terrible?

I am fairly new to laptops (Never bought one) as I have been mainly avoiding them because desktops have done everything for me much better than laptops would do. Especially for the same price. But now I will need something portable, for school use and light gaming.

Needs:
-Battery Life needs to be good. I have been on 4.5hr long laptops and would definitely need longer batter life than that.

-The touchpad must have buttons for the left click and right click. I cannot stand the ones that are touch.

-I would like to be able to play DOTA 2 on high, 60fps, with a resolution of at least 720p.

-I want something portable and slim. 13"-15" screens would be preferred.

-Screen Resolution does not need to be 1080p but that would be nice

I can upgrade the laptop to SDD so it does not need to come with one.

Budget: Under $650

I live in the USA.

My laptop finally up and died on me for good, so it looks like it's time for an upgrade. Unfortunately, I still know next to nothing about buying laptops.

Country where it will be purchased: United States
Maximum budget: Let's say $1200, although the $700 to $900 range would be far more palatable.
Max size: 9 pounds. My now dead laptop was 9 pounds and I don't think I could handle carrying anything heavier than that around on a frequent basis.
Planned usage: I want to be able to play games coming out for the next 3 to 4 years at medium settings, if possible.
Ideal resolution: If it displays in 1080p I'll be happy.
Misc: Quieter fan noise and longer (non-gaming use) battery life is obviously ideal, but neither of those are deal breakers either.

Vazra

irresponsible vagina leak
Country where it will be purchased: Puerto Rico (America)
Budget Range: $2000-$2500
Weight: 8-15 pounds
Planned Usage: 3D Modeling, 3D Animation, Rigging, Programming, PC Gaming, Dolphin Emulation and PCSX Emulation. Definitely want something to last.
Resolution: 1920x1080 would be nice.

Some I'm checking on:

Asus 1 (No Warranty)
Asus2 (Warranty Included)
MSI (No Warranty)

What will happen on June? Conference?

June 4-8 = Computex = Intel Haswell launches in an abundance of new laptops. New AMD and Nvidia mobile GPUs come along for the ride.

With a budget as high as yours, waiting is recommended. The GTX 780M and 8970M are going to wreck shop.
Read it?

Edit: Have been recommended the Enigma IV, thinking of getting this with the full HD screen and the quad core CPU (2.40 GHz), 4GB of RAM and the 500GB HDD, possibly to upgrade RAM and add a SSD at a later date. Seem reasonable?

It's a solid buy, imo.

Are there going to be new laptop models with that? What will be their price range? When are they approximately going to be released?

1. Yes, all new models from with new features. 2. similar prices as now, I guess, give or take some hundreds. 3. I can't give approximations. Too many manufacturers to account for at once. I can say with 100% certainty that Clevo resellers will be putting up preorders before the conference is over. Alienware and MSI should be in similar positions.

In other news, the GTX 760M just leaked:

Double the number of shaders as the GTX 660M. Should be a nice boost for the mid-range laptops.

Christ, why can't Clevo, or hell, anyone make a high-end gaming laptop that looks like this? I know the big cards need space and all that, I'm not even talking about slimness, but using a nice aluminum finish, chiclet keyboard, just not having it look like a dull brick from 1999 or a nerdy gamer trophy with cheesy neon lights, you know? I wish Razer released a Blade that's bulkier but could house a top-of-the-line card (or two).

So Gaming Laptop GAF, I'm in the United States, I'm going to be going into college in the fall and I'm purchasing a new laptop for the occasion. My budget is in the range of $1,000 - $1,200 and I'll be using the laptop for both school and some hardcore gaming. Everyone seems really jazzed about the Lenovo Y500 and I can spend the money to afford the top of the line model with the added graphics card. Is that reccomended? Is there a better, more powerful laptop for the same price point? Should I wait until closer to the fall with my budget to see if anything better pops up or is the Y500 looking fairly future proof (i.e. it will be able to play all the new games at medium or decent settings for the next 3-4 years)? I need answers Gaf! Edit: The screen can really be any size, I totally forgot to mention that. I'm not going to be carrying it around much because I find it more helpful to hand-write my notes, but it will be carried around to classes on occassion.

It would be nice if they would release some 17" models that weren't ugly as sin, too. Vortex III looks like a Vogon spacecraft. And not in a good way.

By the sounds of it people should really wait until intel drops haswell next month. I can live without a laptop for the next 1-2 months if it means getting a better specced machine on a newer chipset with better graphics card. Hoping lenovo takes the finger out and updates their Y500 range soon after intel releases the goodness in June.

Anyone else holding off for haswell with it being so close to mainstream release?

I'm pretty sure that Enigma is a rebranded Compal laptop, just fyi. And Clevo needs a reshuffling at the top exec level, if not entirely. The company is just too old, insular and staunch in its ways, when the majority of the boutique market would be theirs if they just put something beyond their minimum effort into coming up with elegant designs. So they decided to release two versions of each chassis this time. One, the "Clevo look", and the other a "flashier" design. I've seen them and UGGHH at the latter; they should fire the entire design staff, and hire fresh un-entrenched talent.

Finally, I honestly believe Razer would clean up, if they came out with a Blade that didn't have that stupid and ugly gamer's touchpad thing, and priced it lower. I hear grumblings the next one will house a GTX 765M, whatever that card is.

Should I wait until closer to the fall with my budget to see if anything better pops up.....?

Sound thinking.

All of these laptop requests.

Just ignore them. Thread is now on cruise control.

Unless someone's work/school laptop just fell apart and they need one for X reason ASAP, we should all be waiting for Intel to loose the chains at Computex.

Redoing the entire OP in a month or so is going to be so fun.

Now we're getting into difficult questions, which will be answered that week. Some manufacturers might already have machines ready to go, and are just waiting for the Intel/AMD/Nvidia NDAs to drop so they can announce and take orders. Those you'd expect to be shipping withing weeks. Others will have low allotments, and will be shipping laptops as they gets chips to fill them. Those you have to expect to stretch well into July.

I'm definitely not trying to sell anyone on ideas which won't come to fruition, leading to long waits and disappointment. There's the laptop announcements, then the new graphics cards have their own reveals and delivery issues. Shit could turn out that it's July at the earliest for almost everything, due to AMD and Nvidia. This is as tentative of a "wait and see" as once can draw up. All I can do is delivery all of the news I come across. Personally, I've made peace with not having a laptop until August, just in case. All you can do is form your budget and a performance target, and say you'll leave with no less, wait be damned. I want a GTX 780M, period.

Realistically, if your budget currently has you in the range of the GT 750M, what should you hold out for, exactly? The 750M is going to be right there in a month. So do you specifically want Haswell, with its better IGP performance and battery life extension? Or is it to see if Lenovo ships the CPU and 750M in a shiny new case? Maybe a mix both? Fine, that's a personal decision. But you might have two months to think about it. And Lenovo might not even refresh.

Just my perspective. You either buy right now, or strap in for the ride with the rest of us.

The pics floating around the net of the new clevo look pretty ugly. Seriously, why can't someone just make a laptop with the configuration and power of alienware, the customization of sager, all wrapped up in a samsung-like chasis. That's my dream laptop right there.

Man do I know this feel. Even moreso since in recent times, this Samsung Gamer series laptop has inspired all kinds of tech lust in me, but the Radeon HD 8870 versus a theoretical 8970 and some comments from others just made me go back to that "don't know if want" area again.

Real talk, Samsung's Gamers are beautiful to me. In my wildest dreams, they announce a new flagship with the GTX 780M, and I never look back at Clevo, AW, or MSI again.

The 8870M isnn't going to get it done though. My 6970M is still faster than that.

Preach.

The first laptop that gets a form factor like those with a 1000 shader core (going from AMD reference) and 4GB GDDR5 is the first priority for me. Especially if it has MXM 3.0 going on inside.
