I'm really interested in the almost-ultrabook gaming laptops. The Razer one piqued my curiosity, but it's way too expensive, has limited options and the review I read said its screen was pretty mediocre. The poor screen turned me off instantly.

The Gigabyte Ultrablades have got me salivating. A 765m in a 21mm high ~5 lbs (2.2 kilograms?) machine with an IPS display, yes please. It also has a lot more room for storage and you can still have a disc drive. I'd grab one with a Blu Ray drive so I can have everything I want in one, super portable beauty :). Gaming, light-weight time wasting house companion, portable Blu Ray player (with F.lux :D) and easy to take to LAN parties--also work... I guess. I'm excited for more details.

Here's hoping it's not wallet rending...

What's the difference between the 765 and the 770/780? I've seen a few laptops now with the 765 in, just wondering if it would be worth the performance hit to get a nicer looking machine.

From the benchmarks I've seen, the 765m is about on par with a 670MX. So, it's pretty solid.

Here's some benches: http://www.notebookcheck.net/In-Review-Nvidia-GeForce-GTX-780M-GTX-770M-GTX-765M.93277.0.html

Looks like there's a significant drop from a 780m to a 770m, and another from 770m to a 765m.

(Who runs games at Ultra on a laptop?) <- Rhetorical. Wish they had benched the cards at reasonable settings too.

Tbh I never even had an issue running games on my 660m at 1080p. Couldn't max at some games but they all at least ran fine so 675m is probably fine for me. Probably going to go with the Asus g750

So now that Haswell is out, what's the deal? Lenovo Y500 still a sufficient idea to play current gen games, and maybe 2014 releases at medium settings?

Is Y510 the way to go instead?

I'd like to stay at around $1k, but I'm getting antsy to upgrade.

In terms of what I'm interested in, I want to get a laptop that will last me at least as long as my current one, so basically mine would need to run games at 1080p on High settings for 2013, 2014, 2015 and the first half of 2016. I'm thinking I probably need a 780M for that.

Kinda on the subject, how does the 700m series compare to what's inside the new consoles? Anyone know?

Based on the banter on page 342 of the "I need a new PC!" thread, the PS4's GPU is a tiny bit better than a reference-clocked 7850. A 7850 is roughly equivalent to a 7970m, according to Tom's Hardware's GPU hierarchy chart. And according to that notebook check benchmark page I linked a few posts up, a 7970m is a little better than a 770m, but about 23-30% worse than a 780m.

I'd guess that PS4 GPU is, very roughly, moderately better than a 770m, but about 10-20% slower than a 780m.

Enjoy my highly scientific analysis ;)

Ah cool info. Didn't people say the CPU was not so good in both the consoles though too?

Those Gigabyte ultrathins looks interesting.

Oh wow, that is exciting. I hope they do a GT70 with an ultra-HD screen as well. I need 17" minimum.

Which other laptop was it that had the "can't use track pad and keyboard simultaneously" problem? Looking at a hands on, seems the new Toshiba Qosmio X70 might have this problem too.

Qosmio X70 press release

That would be the MSI GT70 Dragon Edition. I am about to find out whether the standard GT70 has that issue as well. It's a total deal breaker, for me.

Looks like there will be two options around ~$1k: the Y510 with 750M SLI, and the Sager NP8230 with a single GTX 770M.

As far as absolute power, the 770M should beat out the SLI cards, and you wouldn't have to deal with the occasional quirks of a dual card setup.

But the real decision is down to which laptop you like the most. In my opinion the Lenovo wins the beauty contest, and the Sager lacks a backlit keyboard.

Any Haswell lappys out now still don't have Windows 8.1, right? Anyone know when that's supposed to come out? If it's soon, I'd rather wait to have that instead of vanilla 8.

I don't think 8.1 even has a release date yet. Plus, it's going to be a free update for current 8 users anyway. I wouldn't postpone a needed purchase for the new version.

Oh shit. Just noticed the Y410P on Lenovo's website is in the 800 range. I wouldn't mind paying for that. The screen is still a let down, but again not necessarily a deal breaker for me. K.Jack, you think anything else is going to match it in terms of power/price anytime soon?

Also, does this new Haswell & 750m combo come with that power saving mode where the gpu goes to the HD series when not in heavy use? And lastly, what's the battery life looking like on these? Better than the previous Y400/500 models, I'm guessing, or around the same?

Don't know about 8.1's official release date but Microsoft will be releasing a public preview near the end of this month (24th or 26th I believe).

I'm looking at the y410p as well but can't get an answer in regards to anything I ask about it. Might grab the $899 model.

thinking of going for the Lenovo Y410p. However, I don't see the updated cards in these yet. Have they been released yet? It is still coming with the GT750M. Is it worth waiting? I primarily play DOTA and CS:GO but would like to be able to play some BF4 if possible. Any thoughts?

Also, question about the resolution. Native on this is 1366x768. Is that just due to the laptop display? This has nothing to do with the card, correct? I have a very nice monitor that I will probably hook up to this laptop if I do decide to go for it. Thanks!

Amazing specs but I don't really like the red color

I ain't exactly a fan of the colors but what I'm looking its performance over aesthetics so it seems to be alright. I might wait a bit more to see what guys say here and if something better shows up.

Normally that's the case, that the card can support higher resolutions but the screen can't.

I just got my Lenovo IdeaPad Y500 today and it has been a treat so far. A great bang/buck laptop and it runs Skyrim like a dream. The worst thing about it so far is just using Windows 8.

Win8 isn't so bad apart from no start menu but that is addressed in 8.1 supposedly

I can tell you right now that the first one isn't really that good of a deal. For that price you could have an MSI GE60 with a 765m or a Sager NP8230 with a 770m.

Speaking of which, anything know how the 760m/765m will last compared to the 770m? Will the gap really not make a difference in a few years will we start getting real next-gen games? How long with any of those cards last? Will the 2GB VRAM be a bottleneck?

Are those 1TB + 24GB SSD worth the price or would I still be better off with a 7200rpm drive for gaming/general performance on the laptops? In this case, the Y410p specifically.

The Y410p btw is showing a 900p display. Not 1080p, but better than that 768p.
