Are those 1TB + 24GB SSD worth the price or would I still be better off with a 7200rpm drive for gaming/general performance on the laptops? In this case, the Y410p specifically.

I can't speak for that configuration specifically, but if they have them the Seagate Momentus XT/Laptop SSHD hybrid drives are definitely worth considering if you want better performance but can't afford the SSD+HDD combo. I put one in my current laptop and I definitely notice the performance improvement.

I can tell you right now that the first one isn't really that good of a deal. For that price you could have an MSI GE60 with a 765m or a Sager NP8230 with a 770m.

Speaking of which, anything know how the 760m/765m will last compared to the 770m? Will the gap really not make a difference in a few years will we start getting real next-gen games? How long with any of those cards last? Will the 2GB VRAM be a bottleneck?
I asked a similar question about the 765 and was told it is comparable to the 670mx

Does anyone know if Asus is planning on updating the G46 with Haswell and new GPUs? I love the look and size of this notebook but would like one with this year's internals. A higher res screen wouldn't be so bad either.

Looking for a laptop:

Country where it will be purchased.
usa - colorado or online

Maximum budget.
$550

Max size (can be in screen inches, dimensions, weight).
9in wide when closed - Seems like this fits most 11in or almost some 14in models

Planned usage (what kind of games or specific games it must run, if heavily gaming at all).
Web, programming, Starcraft2, dota2 but not much gaming at all

Whatever else you find relevant, misc. things such as desired battery life, screen resolution,
fan noise, etc.

Touchscreen if possible - was thinking about the vivobook 11in on amazon x202 edition - looks to be decent and priced ok but best buy has the 14in model - I do have bigger hands and im not sure if the smaller computer would be a pain in the ass to use

It's 15.6" but it does fit the price range and should be able to play those games I suspect.

Not bad but it is too wide for my backpack - I have a feeling I am only going to be able to do 14in or smaller without it being impossible to get out of my gearslinger

Maybe K.Jack has better info. I've seen 14" gaming laptops...e.g. the Razer blade, MSI, ASUS G46 but they are all over that price limit.

Are the new GeForce 700 series drivers coming out soon?

I have a single GeForce GT 750M in my laptop, runs everything really well.

Though, when I try to launch The Last Remnant from steam, the .exe hangs and becomes nonresponsive.

Any ideas? Greatly appreciate the help.

They look to be out for the 750m on the nvidia site? But that seems to be the only one. My g750 has the 765 and that is not yet listed.

I found this but I dont know anything about lenovo

Looks perfect from the things I need - not really looking for a gaming laptop just something that is not a total slouch when it comes to simpler games like SC2.

If the numbers on this one look good I might just go for it from the microsoft store

Can you point me to where they are?

Currently my GeForce GT 750M says that it is up to date at 311.27.

SSHD are these worth it or is it just PR talk?

SSHD is just the new category name Seagate created for their Momentus XT hyrid drives. They're certainly faster than regular HDDs. Actual SSDs are in another league though.

Looking at the lenovo ultrabooks for my sister, she's doing her PhD and her laptop died on her, so anything to watch out for? The processors on these are specifically for Ultrabooks?

I have gorilla hands, and 11 inch netbooks annoy me with their small size.

As long as you're sure the HD 4000 can run those games, the Lenovo is a good laptop.

I just saw this on the store page for Last Remnant:

*3 Laptop versions and onboard video are not supported. Video cards that share the same VRAM as the main memory are not supported.

My 750M is integrated I believe...

Sigh. Why is this the only game I've seen do that? Waste of $10.

I don't think there exists an integrated 750M. Your laptop has Optimus? Are you sure TLR is detecting that the 750M is active?

I would think it is. It just boots the splash screen, opens up a windowed box with a white screen then becomes unresponsive every time.

I don't know for sure if the card is integrated in my laptop, but at this point after trying everything it's the only thing I can conclude.

This GS70 looks mighty fine.

MSI also launched a portable gaming notebook called the GS70 Stealth that is a slim 0.85 inches thick and a light 5.73 pounds. To give you a frame of reference, most gaming notebooks are 8.5 to 9 pounds, and usually have a thickness of two inches or more.

When it comes to internals, the GS70 will be offered with an i7 configuration, but there is no word on what particular Haswell CPU it will come with. The laptop is also fitted with Nvidia’s new GTX 765M discrete video card which has 768 CUDA cores and a clock speed of 850MHz.

Whats the word on when this specifically comes out? I was about to post in here because I'm about to buy a laptop.

I had a Macbook Pro Retina 15" that I just sold, Loved the thing and it played anything I wanted, but Im wanting to future proof, for a good 3 years or so. So i was aiming at 780m, my friend just got one of those monster 17" msi's, and not sure how I feel about it.

So just now seeing this.. has a slimmer form factor, which I would like. Any other recommendations from anyone that I might be missing? I think I know the answer to the question... that the slimmer factors dont exist for 780m models, but I would go 15" or 17". Just not sure how I feel about the MSI huge case like in those Force models on Xoticpc.com

Budget for me is ~1700 to 1800. Dont need an OS, which is why I've been shopping xoticpc.com

Which CPU do you have? I ask because I just found a listing for a G750 with a 4700HQ, but I didn't think the H-series parts were out yet.

Yep that is what I have. I don't have the model with 770m however. I have the 765m which just came out this week. I think that model you are looking at doesn't release till the end of the month

Lenovo Y500

8GB DDR3 RAM
GeForce GT 750M 2GB DDR5
i7 @ 2.4GHz
Windows 8

I'm considering the y410p with the 750M. Would you mind letting me know which games you play, what kind of settings you play on, and how the games run?

The most demanding game I've tested it on (that I've tried thus far) is Guild Wars 2, which I can run at max settings with 60-70 FPS. Though the game isn't TOO demanding, so take that with a grain of salt.

I haven't tried much recent stuff yet, but my guess for the more recent things is you could probably run them at Medium to High settings, but doubtful at Max.

fuck guys, i have a problem

I bought the MSI GE60 with a Geforce GTX 765M and the first thing I did was uninstall windows 8 and installed windows 7. Problem is, however, that there are no drivers for the GTX 765M that are compatible with windows 7!!! Is there anything I can do? I bought this laptop for a flight tomorrow ;(((

The stock driver it shipped with should run on Windows 8 and 7. It doesn't? Do you have a driver disc?

I remember hearing a while ago about new laptop technologies. Something about amazing graphics and much longer battery life. Does this apply to gaming laptops and if so, what are these technologies called and are they released yet?

Anyone from the U.K here recommend a nice soft cloth for putting over the keyboard? Got the problem of greasy marks etc getting on to the screen when the laptop is closed from it very lightly touching the keyboard. Having trouble finding a nice quality soft cloth that fits 17inch. Thanks.

I bought a gaming laptop 2 years ago, with an Intel i5 and a GTX 560m. I have not been using it to other things than work. How is the GTX 560m keeping up with gaming nowadays, still a decent card, or should I sell my laptop & buy a new one?

Hi laptop-gaf, I need some help :)

I'm looking for a laptop for gaming and dx11 graphics coding (good drivers extremely important), something that I can take to work a lot (so size and weight are very important).

Country where it will be purchased: UK
Maximum budget: around 1500 pounds
Max size: around 15 inch
Planned usage: Doing some gaming on it until I buy a new desktop, a lot of dx11 shader coding

I love good build quality (my current laptop is an old macbook pro), and hate the "gamer" look with coloured lights everywhere, etc.

Currently I'm wondering if my best choice is just to wait until they upgrade the macbook pro line in a couple of days and go with that, but as I'll be installing windows anyway I thought I should take a look at the cheaper alternatives.

There are no Windows 8 drivers either. At least on the nvidia site. There seems to be some sort of issue with BF3 and this card for me. It's like a stutter and it's really annoying. Every other game works fine that I've played so far.

I imagine you should still be able to run any game although not at max in some cases. Really depends on what you games you want to play.

May as well just wait the 2 days and see. BUT I'm not sure how much this is in the UK but it sure is sexy and looks to be good for travel

You mean the Intel Haswell CPUs? Your question is so fucking broad lol

Amazing graphics, not so much. Still lacking compared to a dedicated solutions but fine if you dont game so much.

Better battery life with Haswell CPUs is confirmed. Check the names. On Intels site orwhatever

Liking the g750. The brushed aluminum like outside is great compared to the plastic style of the older models.
Question, I've heard that asus machines have amazing cooling that keeps noise and heat down, how noisy do the fans on yours get and what is the average temp when gaming?

I'm not sure. I just remember hearing something about how now is a bad time to buy a laptop because some new technology is coming out that will increase battery life substantially (I think I remember hearing something about 24 hours, but that might have been for ultrabooks) and how graphic performance would be much better as well. I'm not sure if that is just the integrated Intel graphics or if it meant something else. This may affect gaming laptops though, if they use switching.

Pretty much, I'd like to get a new gaming laptop, but if it'd be better to wait a while, I'd rather wait.

This laptop has Haswell, but only states about 5 hours of battery life. I'm not sure if it would be a good buy. Although, I probably wouldn't anyway, because I don't like the red backlighting.

Damn you nvidia...

GeForce GTX 765M
This product has been detected as your primary device

A driver cannot be found for this device

I hope they release a driver soon that fixes this stutter in BF3. Really annoying. Well whatever at least it can run the game at ultra
