Fools are always so certain of themselves, but wiser men so full of doubts.
Think I asked this before but what do you guys recommend to clean dust/spots off of a glossy LCD screen?

Maximum budget.
$650

Max size (can be in screen inches, dimensions, weight).
Doesn't matter to me.

Planned usage (what kind of games or specific games it must run, if heavily gaming at all).
Would like to play Bioshock Infinite

I also had a question. I was looking at this deal and was wondering what it meant by "Intel HD Graphics 4000 in processor, and NVIDIA GeForce® GTX 660M LE Graphics" in the Graphics section. Also is that a good deal? :p

For $650 that's probably the best deal you'll find. And it has two graphics cards; an integrated one (Intel) for low-level stuff like OS/desktop display, web browsing, etc. and a dedicated one (Nvidia) for demanding stuff like gaming.

As far as the 660m goes, it can easily play Infinite with high settings. Just don't expect it to do something like Crysis 3 (on high settings) or any next-gen games, but you'll be able to play pretty much everything from this gen on mostly max settings, with demanding games (like Crysis 3) on medium/high.

I bought a gaming laptop 2 years ago, with an Intel i5 and a GTX 560m. I have not been using it to other things than work. How is the GTX 560m keeping up with gaming nowadays, still a decent card, or should I sell my laptop & buy a new one?

Define decent? It'll still game at High settings, depending on the game and what resolution you use.

Hi laptop-gaf, I need some help :)

I'm looking for a laptop for gaming and dx11 graphics coding (good drivers extremely important), something that I can take to work a lot (so size and weight are very important).

Country where it will be purchased: UK
Maximum budget: around 1500 pounds
Max size: around 15 inch
Planned usage: Doing some gaming on it until I buy a new desktop, a lot of dx11 shader coding

I love good build quality (my current laptop is an old macbook pro), and hate the "gamer" look with coloured lights everywhere, etc.

Currently I'm wondering if my best choice is just to wait until they upgrade the macbook pro line in a couple of days and go with that, but as I'll be installing windows anyway I thought I should take a look at the cheaper alternatives.

You could have this configured with a GTX 780M, on that kind of budget.

Think I asked this before but what do you guys recommend to clean dust/spots off of a glossy LCD screen?

One of those eye glass cleaning towels.

Would this laptop be good?
Not better than this.

The Intel runs while you're not doing anything strenuous, the Nvidia while you game. And yes, very good deal. Take it.

Preferably 11 to 13 inches. Ultrabook but can be thicker.

Dota 2. Steam backlog, won't be top of the end games really.

Ideally you'll point out what resolution and settings are your standard, based off of what I've laid out in the OP.
I would prefer at the very least 1400 x 900 but 1080p would be great.

Whatever else you find relevant, misc. things such as desired battery life, screen resolution, fan noise, etc.

Good battery life, something that looks good.

I am pretty tempted by the new macbook airs, I know that they don't offer very good gaming capabilities but they look fantastic and the battery life is pretty good. I can get education pricing too so they seem like a decent price.

If I were you and going for a mac I would get the 13" pro, the air's get REALLY warm when gaming due to how tight it is in there. Also any Mac is over your budget, the entry level Air has an ipad size SSD...

You might want to look at the Lenovo's, the Ideapad and Yoga ranges are both great and they are well built. Yoga 13 looks great too, even if you don't use the touchscreen.

The Pro's have not been updated to Haswell have they?

£816 seems alright for the 13 inch.

I have looked at the Yoga but are new models not about to come out soon? The 11s and 13 are Ivy Bridge, and the 13 is more expensive with worse graphics compared to the Air.

EUROCOM has recently listed two new gaming laptops in their products list:

They appear to be pretty sweet deals... For instance, both support GTX780M graphics cards and higher end CPUs for a higher price. It looks like my preferred configuration of a GTX780M + Intel I7-4800MQ would come up to 2449.00$ (no OS) for the 17" model, which sounds decent enough.

What I'm wondering is, with the announcements of ASUS G750 and the MSI GT with GTX780M, are the EUROCOM laptops good options to consider for their value/price? I am really hyped for the G750's aesthetics but I'm wondering if its really worth it. The only G750 model with the GTX780M is rumoured to only support the i7-4700MQ and is priced at 2499.00$ on various online shops.

So, what am I missing? Is there some detail about dedicated gaming laptops I'm not seeing that would render these CLEVO options less interesting? Please understand my skepticism since I've always been a Desktop gamer and I don't want to mess up my first Notebook purchase.

P.s. I say Eurocom is CLEVO but I can't find any documentation on what model is the X3 and X5...
P.s.2. I also found some unavailable EUROCOM X7 model that is missing many details. I guess it will be available soon on their website. Could be another interesting option.

Thanks!

Most Eurocoms products are just overpriced clevos'. Just stick with sager I say. So far, I haven't seen anything a Eurocom can do that a normal sager cant already do except being incredibly more expensive.

I would like to be able to run most if not all at high settings at the max resolution.

1920 x 1080 or 1600 x 900 preferred, but Im ok with lower.

I know more than a few people on here bought Y400's and Y500's, so just a word of warning.

DO NOT USE THE BATTERY GAUGE RESET IN THE POWER OPTIONS.

My Y500 is about to go in for repair because of this, and after some googling, I found out I'm definitely not the only one. What happens is the gauge reset charges and then depletes your battery, but once the battery was depleted, the laptop just wouldn't turn on. Period. To get it to turn on, I had to plug the cord into the laptop, and THEN into an outlet. The laptop also no longer recognizes when it's supposed to be charging the battery (it just doesn't charge).

Hopefully my posting this can save someone else the headache of sending your laptop in for repair.

My budget is from ~1100 to ~1700.

My friend just bought one of the custom Barebones from Xoticpc, 17 inch w/680m. He loves it. Im not sure if its too bulky for me or not.

My dilemma: I'm not sure if I should blow 1700+ on a laptop, if everyone says they basically are 'meh' after 2 years or so. From experience, do you guys recommend staying in the 1k to 1200 range? The Lenovo y510p looks like a good deal with the 750m sli, and says its about the same as a 770m.

Im just being really indecisive right now, as the 'gamer' in me wants the 780m, but it would be like I said, 1700. I sold my 15" mbpretina, made money off of it, and now want to get 2 computers, an Air for my wife and for light stuff, and a good gaming machine.

TL:DR - i have a budget of 1100 - 1800. Is top end worth it? or should I go for something more budget friendly, lenovo y150p

Country: USA

Budget: $1000~$1500

Size: Prefer a 15.6" screen. Any bigger is cumbersome for travel.

Use: mostly gaming, prefer something that will at least let me stay current for a couple years. High to ultra now, standard a year from now is fine. Though I know it's hard to predict.

Other stuff: prefer to buy it on Amazon so I can get fast shipping with Prime, but if the power:price ratios on amazon are vastly inferior to elsewhere then it's not set in stone.

So for top-end Haswell/7-series nVidia gaming laptops (in the UK at least) it looks like all there is at the moment is overpriced Alienwares, even-more-overpriced MSIs, and various rebadged Clevo units. Am I missing something? What happened to the Asus G750 for example?

So it has to be under 5 pounds?

I just wanted to know how does gaming on a 1920 X 1080 laptop looks like with a 1366 X 768 resolution?

edit: I know everyone is busy with e3 stuff but can somebody tell me if this is good for gaming? I did a bit of research and it seemed pretty good for the price
http://shop.lenovo.com/SEUILibrary/...ow:Enter?redir=y&mtm-item=:000001CA:000033A3:

Depends on what level of gaming you're looking to do. It's good for medium/high settings.

About resolution, gaming at 768p on a 1080p will look a lot softer, but it's not completely intolerable.

Yeah ideally. I'm honestly leaning toward an ultrabook but if there's something light that can play games on like medium settings then I'd rather go that route.
Your main issue is going to be that price goes up as weight comes down. I wish your budget was more like $1,200.

We'll have to keep an eye out for the Gigabyte ultrabooks. The P34G (3.7lbs.) is 1080p w/ GTX 760M, and the P35 has a 1080p IPS w/ the GTX 765M. The P34G should have a $999 SKU.

fake edit: We also don't yet have a starting price on the 13" Clevo.

What bothers me about the rebadged Clevo stuff is that the top-end models look so ugly. The Optimus V for example looks great, but you can't configure it with a better GPU. The Vortex IV LE looks okay but only has a 15.6" screen (I want 17").
Ugly is the Clevo motto, unfortunately.

Is this in the ugly bin too?

What are my options at $1200? I'm willing to go a few 100 higher if it opens up some more ideal machines. Just definitely nothing above $1500

Country where it will be purchased. Australia
Maximum budget. $2000 AUD
Max size (can be in screen inches, dimensions, weight). 15' or 17' inch would be ideal!

Planned usage:
I'd like to play new games like Tomb Raider and Bioshock Infinite on nearly all the highest settings. Don't mind turning off Vertical Sync or something similar to achieve those higher settings.
Battery life isn't hugely important, as I'll probably be carrying around my charger if I'm moving around. I'd like 1920x1080. Blur ray player isn't necessary, but would be a nice added feature. Preferably at least 750GB Hard drive. Ideally 1TB. No DELL laptops thanks (customer service was atrocious last time). Unless someone can convince me otherwise, I'm okay with either a Nvidia or AMD graphics card.

If anyone could help that would be awesome!

Can it wait a few weeks? New CPUs and GPUs are coming out next week and the new laptops containing them won't be too far behind.

These guys have pretty good customer service: http://www.logicalblueone.com.au/

These guys have a good rep too: http://www.affordablelaptops.com.au/

Have they come out yet?

I'm having a look at the sites and I'm a little overwhelmed by the choices.

Sister is in the market for a gaming/let's play laptop.

Country: USA
Budget: $850ish
Needs: i7 quad core for video editing
Wants: remaining price power in the GPU for gaming (capable but not enthusiast), at least 15.4", though 17" if possible
Expendable: high resolution, as long as it's at least 768p resolution can be sacrificed for the benefit of other specs, also no need for an optical drive

Saw some good deals on a few lenovo's but wanted to get some input from laptop GAF first.

What about that Lenovo y510p?

Calibrated Chaos is explicit in desiring something which weighs less than 5lbs.

Anything better than this for the same budget?

As mentioned before I'm from Puerto Rico so USD and I'm willing to go max to $2800 (including warranty)

That Dragon Edition has tons of wasted money sunk into it. Who the hell wants triple-RAID 128GB SSDs? You're better off configuring this stripped down version however you want it. You basically have $1,100 to play with, versus the $2,699 bling version.

Is there any significant difference between Nvidia's 735m and 740m for playing (primarily) MOBAs such as LoL and some older games? Really not looking to be able to play current games at high settings or anything as the laptop (I'm thinking the new Vaios) is mainly for films/entertainment.

Would love to grab something from PCspecialist for a similar price but I'm just not a fan of their looks at all, so bulky.

I posted a month ago asking for a $500 laptop recommendation for school and occasional gaming. The suggested laptop was this (thanks for that rec, btw).

I'm just posting again because I had some unanticipated financial obligations that have kept me from buying, but the plan is to buy this Thursday now. I'm just following up to make sure there isn't a better option now, since it's so much later than when I posted before.

The 735M is 64-bit, so there will be a significant performance hit vs the other 128-bit 700M cards.

Can I get a link to these new VAIOs?

It is at $549.99, but I feel obligated to say that the Acer Aspire V3-571G-6622, with its much more powerful Core i5 and Nvidia GT 730M, would be a great pick up if you can manage the $629.99 ask.

Question about Windows 8 vs. 7: Alienware allows a choice between the two when configuring their new models.

Are there any major downsides to 8, specifically game compatibility issues? Or will it run anything that runs in Win7?

Sure, see here . I really like the look of them (they've replaced the old S series which came with a 740m and I almost pulled the trigger on a few weeks back - I wish I had - hence my question) and from a quick search around it seemed as though the 735m wasn't up to much.

Any other suggestions? Lenovo's Y500 looks nice but there doesn't seem to be any stock on their website and the 1920x1080 with Blu-ray version seems hard to find here in the UK. Have about 1000GBP to play with and looking for 15.6 inch with HD, Blu-ray and ideally not too bulky.

Eyeing a P370SM now as soon as resellers in Europe have it available. Just wondering if the extra money for the 4900MQ is worth it? Since I'll end up somewhere in the 3.5k EUR range I feel like 200 bucks more won't matter anyway and might make the thing just a bit more future proof.

Still open to advice though.

Precisely the one I was looking at earlier. Thanks! I'll be on the lookout for a good deal before pulling the trigger. I check slickdeals fairly regularly, but do you have any other place you check for sale aggregates?
I just Google for coupons.

There's this. It weighs less than the Y500, and has a significantly faster graphics card.

Could you guys give me an appraisal on this Sager laptop please? I'm going to sell it on ebay but I have no idea what to price it at. It's in good shape and works fine.
$800
I just had a mailshot from Medion about some new Haswell laptops they have, including this one:

It doesn't look like a Clevo, what is it? It looks like it might be a rebadged MSI GT70?
Barebones MSI 1762

Not at all. Take the 4800MQ, and you can overclock it with Intel XTU.

Barebones MSI 1762

Except looking on Google, it seems the 1762 is the Ivy Bridge/6-series nVidia version? This has Haswell and 7-series nVidia. The price is far more sane than what Overclockers UK are charging for the new GT70s though.

MSI has already updated the barebone model with Haswell and the new GPU. My mistake, as it's actually called the 1763.

Does anyone know of any laptops with Haswell chips that are ~$600-$700?
