Those live pics are old and of prototypes. The finished products likely have different keyboards, and other changes.

Uhg, my laptop just died like a half hour ago.

Anyone got any recommendations? I was looking at a Sager, but my friend has one and it's super loud. Is an i5 better than an i7?

1. Budget?
2. Has your friend ever cleaned his Sager's fans/heatsinks? Which does he have? None of the new ones are loud.
3. Mobile i5s are dual cores, i7s are quad cores. 4 > 2

My "gaming" laptop can manage 480p (sometimes 600p) in Bf3, all low settings. Just too bad the screen is 1600 x 900. The thing was $1000 when I bought it two years ago; the same price as a higher-end PC :/

Two years ago for $1k sounds like 6770M territory....

1. Fairly large. $1200-1500 easily.
2. It's actually been loud since the day he got it. It's not SUPER loud, but louder than I am used to with a laptop. He got it about a year ago and paid $2k, so it was top of the line when he got it.
3. I figured as much, but I remember last time I was shopping people were saying i5 was better for the higher clock speeds.

I was looking at the first page and it seems like there's not much in my sweet spot in pricing. It's either spend $300 more for around $1800 and get top of the line, or pay $1200 for something lower. I was looking at the stuff on the first page and around xoticpc last night. I think I'm going to have to settle for a 17" screen even though I think they are a little bulky and annoying.

Are the xoticpc branded/msi machines any good?

I'm thinking about purchasing an MSI laptop in the next several months after Haswell releases. In general, how is the build quality for their laptops?

I just sold my Clevo P150EM. In the end it was too bulky for me, and I didn't really like the mouse and keyboard. I'm hoping there's some decent 14" laptops with Haswell because my wife's Dell XPS 14 is just about perfect in terms of size, keyboard and mouse.

I guess it's pretty dumb not to wait for Haswell to come out before buying something at this point. It's just annoying having to wait after my laptop died :\

Yep, I've not got one and it is getting quite annoying, I was hoping to buy at the start of June but I don't know how viable that it is going to be.

Sorry I've been away for a couple days. I have to agree that with 7 days left until the Haswell launch, now's a poor time to invest in soon to be last-gen technology, especially if your budget is above $1k. The new gear from Intel and Nvidia is worth the wait.

We're in the midst of a painful transition.

Do you guys also use lil ventilator stands underneath ur laptops? Or do you just leave the laptop on the table?

I put some props under the laptop so it can have some room to breath underneath, i think if you don't do hardcore OC you shouldn't require extra fans for cooling.

has anyone adjusted the voltage to their 555m? I was reading about some folks who have done this to overclock it even harder but I fear that it'll just cause the 555m to overheat faster and the effort will be for nothing...

I prop the rear of my Clevo up a couple of cm, and it has a noticeable effect on temps. I don't buy into cooling pads or fans - just make sure it's clean internally and give it space to breathe.

Haven't bought a laptop in awhile in between building a new or buying a new dell laptop, any suggestions on which would like to stay under 1000. Any suggestions don't really game, only develop apps in my spare time. Why dell, have a dfs account can't afford it directly right now, also posted in the pc thread because figured I'd check my options.

Wait until next week.

Well its only competition is the 13.3" Clevo W230ST. Both pack the GTX 765M, but the Clevo has a 1080p screen vs the Razer's 900p. And I have a suspicion that the Razer will be stuck with dual core CPUs, while the Clevo is confirmed to have quad cores on deck.

Razer wins the form factor battle though. I don't have dimensions on the W230ST, but it ain't as thin as that. I have some old pictures but it's been updated at the last minute with a backlit keyboard, so they're not accurate anymore.

I need a cheap decent gaming laptop. Not looking to spend over $700.

I love Dell laptop keyboards and their screens but they're pretty pricey. I don't want anything over the top either. I don't care too much about Haswell at this point.

Why doesn't Clevo use this keyboard and chassis for the 15" laptops and above? I don't get it

do we know what is planned for haswell for mobile CPUs? eg will i5 still be dual core or will there be some quad core coming along? Do you need particular models to get decent integrated graphics?

Might be looking for another family laptop later in the year and I'd like something that would be ok for games at lower settings (older steam stuff, minecraft etc). I find HD4000 borderline for that at the moment.

How much better is the 765m from 660m? Looking to upgrade and saw the Asus g750...anything better coming out soonish? Dont by want to more than $1500
Quite a bit, the 765M seems to be on par with the 670MX.

People with Lenovo Y500: How's the build quality? I'm seriously considering dropping some money on one, but I've never had any experience with Lenovo products. How do they compare to Asus laptops?

Speaking of this has a refresh with Haswell and 700 series been announced yet.? Also any laptop with 770m under $1500 out there?

I've been thinking about it. With me having a dedicated gaming desktop, I feel like it might be redundant to buy a gaming laptop. That said, I'd still like something with a bit of power, without breaking the bank. I see that the Lenovo outlet store has the Y400 with 650m at ~$600 dollars. I kind of wanted 1080p screen, but at the same time it's not my major concern right now, I've had 1366x768 for a while on my M11X and it doesn't bother me at all. The main thing still kind of holding me back is the battery. Though at that price, I can definitely forgive it.

I read that there's a good amount of improvement from the HD4000 mobile line in the new Haswell series. However, could I get something with similar performance and better battery life at that outlet Y400 price range or are the new HD#### series going to be for computers in the ~1000 range?

I don't really plan to do MAJOR gaming on it, but I would like to maybe play some Sim City without having to move to my desktop, or just getting on SWTOR to do some crafting or some quick pvp matches. I mean right now, I'm just waiting and seeing, since it doesn't look like the Lenovo outlet store is going to run out of stock anytime soon. But if anyone has any input, I'd love to hear your thoughts.

Yeah, it's pretty nice, right? I don't understand their thinking either.

765M has double the shaders (768 vs 384) and higher clocks. It should a lot faster than the 660M, at least 20-25%.

Somewhat off topic but it has been a while since win8 release...any good tablets around for gaming like lol, dota2, wow etc.?

I know nothing about tablets.

I'm very confident when I say that, even after next week's reveals, you won't find anything in the range of $600 that is faster than the Y400's 650M GDDR5. The faster IGP Intel is putting out, the HD 5200, certainly won't match it.

Country where it will be purchased. Australia
Maximum budget. $2000 AUD
Max size (can be in screen inches, dimensions, weight). 15' or 17' inch would be ideal!

Planned usage:
I'd like to play new games like Tomb Raider and Bioshock Infinite on nearly all the highest settings. Don't mind turning off Vertical Sync or something similar to achieve those higher settings.
Battery life isn't hugely important, as I'll probably be carrying around my charger if I'm moving around. I'd like 1920x1080. Blur ray player isn't necessary, but would be a nice added feature. Preferably at least 750GB Hard drive. Ideally 1TB. No DELL laptops thanks (customer service was atrocious last time). Unless someone can convince me otherwise, I'm okay with either a Nvidia or AMD graphics card.

If anyone could help that would be awesome!

Close actually: 6570M + i7 2630QM @ 2.00 GHz. Kinda a bummer that that $1000 today would have got me a laptop with a much better GPU + CPU or a mid-high end desktop.

+1 for Logical Blue One. :) Got my P150HMA through them two years ago, and the service is tops. I found a single stuck pixel (red) soon after purchase, and they replaced the LCD without hesitation.

I'm going to upgrade my GPU this year. Jack @ LBO is happy to do the work for me - it'll cost me a bit more than the DIY route, but it's a job I'd like done by someone I trust.

Don't know if you visit Whirlpool at all, but Jack posts there:

Jeff from AL posts there too.

Another question. Why did they go with calling it the g750 rather than g76? Is it not the g75 successor? Any chance of seeing a refresh of the g55 /46 next week? G750 looks amazing but it is huge to carry around lol.

Engadget have got a review up of the new MSI GT70 Dragon Edtion with Haswell CPU and 7-series nVidia GPU. Sounds good except for the bit about the trackpad not working when you use the keyboard. Not that I use the trackpad, but I'd want the thing to work in case I had to use it for some reason.

So the MSI looks like shit, seems like I'll be deciding between G750 and the Clevo SLI 780M model then. Would prefer to go with the Asus but judging from the current benchmarks a single 780M still won't quite be enough for solid 30fps at max details, 1080P with certain titles.

I can't believe that, not when the 780M can literally be overclocked into the GTX 680. That's an over 30% increase in added performance.

I haven't bought a gaming laptop before so I don't know anything about the feasibility of overclocking, whether this differs from laptop model to model etc...but I'll keep my eyes peeled. Guess next week will bring more answers.

So I'm ready to pull the trigger on an Enigma IV from PC Specialist with the i7 Quad-Core (2.40 GHz), are these new Haswell chips going to make it worth me waiting or are they aimed at a little pricier of a market? I'm not really planning on spending any more than £650.
