Is a USB 3.0 Controller able to be fixed if it is broken on a laptop? Some guy told me it's unfixable and I'm illiterate when it comes to these things. I sold a laptop on ebay and I don't think he wants a refund or anything but that doesn't make any sense to me how they couldn't just be switched out.

he got a laptop with these specs for $680

SpecsSystem Manufacturer: CLEVO
System Model: Sager NP8150 (CLEVO P150HM equivalent)
Processor: Intel Core i7-2630QM @ 2.0GHz
Memory: 8192MB RAM
AMD Graphics Card: Radeon HD 6900M Series
AMD Radeon Chip Type: (0x6720)
AMD Card memory: 1763mb
15.6 1920 x 1080 Glossy screen display
Hard Drive: 500gb

did he get a good deal? he is saying he should of paid $600 instead of $680...

That fix would require some soldering, so no it's not easy.

But your price was fair. The 6990M is about even with the GTX 765M, which is obviously power that can't be had for $680.

Anyone overclock the GPU in their laptop? Wondering how safe it is. I have ASUS g750jw with 765m and used the ASUS GPU tweak application and now getting like 15-20 more FPS. GPU temps around 66c while playing. It's quite nice playing BF3 at 70+ FPS lol

Warning if buying from Lenovo

Lenovo has been highly recommended in this thread, so I bought myself one on the 23rd last month from their website

At the time the website said "shipping in 2-3 days"

My order was processed, and it said it would ship on the 26th (Thursday) and arrive by the 30th (Monday).

Monday came and I had received no shipping notice. I spoke to a rep and was told it would ship on the 1st (website had updated to say shipping on 30th).

Tuesday came and no shipment

Today my order was updated.

Now it says it will not ship until 2013/10/10

I did a search, and theres a 75+ page thread on their forum of people complaining that every shipping date they received was a lie, and the reps also constantly lie.

Hopefully the build quality of their machine is better than their customer service.

It's completely safe, as long as the temperatures are in a safe range, like below 90C. You're at 66C so that's absolutely nothing to worry about, you're good.

That's why I usually steer people toward the Newegg SKUs, unless something is objectively better on the official site.

It suck that you're going through that.

Also, RE: warning about Lenovo

Make sure you buy a model you'll be happy with down the road. Don't plan on being able to buy another video card or optical drive later on, despite the fact Lenovo advertises the ultrabay prominently and implies availability of ultrabay accessories. They STILL aren't available for purchase. So if you think you'll want SLI down the road, just get SLI now.

Dumb question my laptop has 1600Mhz ram installed and I bought some 1333Mhz ram. Will this cause any potential issuues? Should I return it and get 1600Mhz stuff?

I'd stick with 1600Mhz, the faster the RAM the better off you are is a general good rule of thumb

The faster RAM will run at the slower RAM's speed, if you install what you bought. I suggest the return.

So has everyone seen the Watch_Dogs System Requirements?

To put things into a current mobile perspective:

As far as CPU goes, the i7-4700MQ should cover things adequately.

Now about the GPUs....

Minimum - Desktop: GTX 460 = Mobile: GTX 765M; GTX 770M more comfortably

Recommended - Desktop : 7850 = Mobile: 7970M

Ultra - Desktop: GTX 670 = Mobile: GTX 780M

Expect this generation to follow Watch_Dogs' lead, at least for the first couple years. This shows why I've been stressing the importance of getting as much GPU as your budget allows.

Any thoughts on this Toshiba? I'm not familiar with Toshiba's build quality but I haven't seen anything around that price with a 740M. All I'm really looking to do is play a mix of Dota 2, Civ 3-5, some indie games, and Age of Wonders 3 when it comes out next year. Would this be capable of running those games on medium settings? Not looking for a laptop that can play next gen games.

Edit: Then again, the 740M might be garbage for all I know.

The 740M can handle what you've listed. You'd be better off spending $50 more on this Toshiba, because of it's much stronger CPU.

Isn't 765m a 560 equivalent?

I'm looking for a laptop for my sister. She doesn't really game much beyond, at most, The Sims 3, so I would not say that she's looking for a "gaming laptop" by any means, just a decent laptop. Here's some basic info:

We're located in the US.
Max budget is $800
Max size is 17", but she is hoping for something on the mid-to-light size, so I think a 15" is more reasonable.
No gaming requirement really, but medium settings at 720p for Sims 3 would be more than enough for what little she uses it for gaming.
No other general requests from her; she's a student and just needs it for writing papers, web browsing, Netflix, etc.

So, I know we could get any old shit at Best Buy and she'd be fine, but I haven't purchased a laptop in 6 years and don't know where to start. Are there brands to avoid? I know AMD's mobile processors are somewhat shit, but has that improved at all lately? I get the impression that Ultrabooks are overpriced for meager performance, is that true?

Any rough suggestions for a general-usage laptop would be really, really appreciated.

I'm worried about my laptop now, my specs are

CPU: Intel Core i7-3635QM
GPU: AMD Radeon HD 8870M
Ram: 8 GB

Don't think this fulfills the minimum requirements. I wasn't planning on using my laptop as my main gaming PC, as I plan to build a rig next year, but it's kinda disappointing that it won't run most of the upcoming demanding games so I can play on the go.

Honestly, I have bought games where my laptop nowhere meets minimum requirements and it still works at 720p on low-medium settings. Sleeping Dogs for example.

See them as a guideline, not a necessity.

Y410P came in. 900p panel.

First thoughts:
It looks nice
Keyboard is nice
Touchpad is not shit
Big ass heatsink is welcome
Good volume on speakers
Little bit of give in places, but overall feels pretty good.

Downloading games onto it, will test tomorrow hopefully.

Bummer. My online order was the same time and it always said shipping on 10/10 IIRC.
Got it today.

Any problems with the wireless? I've been eyeing the y410p but I've seen numerous reviews complaining about issues with the wireless card so that has put me off from purchasing it.

The Lenovo y500 with the dual GT650m's would be a good buy. They go for around $800 depending on the vendor.

I'm in college, and I essentially need a laptop to get by. And I figured that while I'm buying one for school, I'd might as well get one that plays games, too. So I've been looking at the Alienware 17 http://www.dell.com/us/p/alienware-1...?&ST=alienware 17&dgc=ST&cid=246125&lid=4243667&acd=123098073120560&ref=2578xb

The base model costs $1,499, and that's basically my limit in how much I'll pay. However, I'm afraid that the base model might not actually be powerful enough for the price. I have no idea how to read technical stuff, so I need help figuring out if its worth it.

Alienware is often overpriced for what you get, not much bang for buck, plus they look ugly IMO. Also, if you're buying something for college I'd be against buying something that's too large or thick, trust me on this.
If it were me I'd go with the Sager NP8255-S, that thing packs a lot of power and is in your price range. Another option is the MSI GT60. If you really, really want a large laptop then go for the MSI GT70, though I'm personally against it.

So I put in a 256gb MSATA SSD into my Alienware 14 and for some weird reason I could not make it the bootable HDD (You could make it a back up, but not the OS HDD). So I took it to a friends PC shop and let their techs try and they couldn't either. The guy said they tried everything(using recovery USB and Win 8 cds) looked through various sites and forums too. This was using Windows 8. So I asked them to try with Win 7 and it worked perfect.

How weird is that they couldn't fresh install Win 8 on my MSATA, but had no problem with Win 7. The guy said the Bios would not let them with WIN 8, but 7 was perfect.

The 8870M is not a weak GPU. It will play next-gen games, at some mixture of settings/resolution.

For someone who only wants to go to school and play Sims 3? Seems like way overkill.

You'd be much better off with the GTX 770M equipped MSI GT70. You could spend the difference on an SSD, then move the HHD to the 2nd drive slot.

Yeah, it's about a 560 ti equivalent. Perhaps slightly less bottlenecked because of the extra 1GB of vram, but every comparison puts the 765m more or less equal to it.

The 560 Ti has over double the memory bandwidth, 134.4 GB/s vs 64.1 GB/s, due in large part to the Ti's 256-bit memory bus, versus the 765M's 128-bit bus. And I found, on Notebookcheck, that the GTX 580M manages to best the 765M in Battlefield 3 (1080p Ultra), despite the fact that it is a 560 Ti, and with a 30% downclock on the core frequency at that.

So no, we should not fully commit to the 765M equaling the 560 Ti, not in the most demanding games, not at 1080p. Now if the 560 Ti hits its VRAM limit, all bets are off. In the 580M's favor is that Nvidia shipped it with 2GB VRAM.

Crysis 3 also recommended a gtx 460 but my previous 660m was able to play it smoothly at medium settings. Like someone said above me Ubi just uses these things as guidelines for what you might theoretically need to play it. Most of the time though these tech requirements are a little overshot.

So yeah I was looking(keyword looking) at laptops on Newegg and was at Asus g750jx then my gf is like can I see the phone so OK give it to her to use. Man you really should be getting an MSI GT70-2OD w/ GTX 780M for that price. The GPU is 50% faster than the 770M. In desktop terms, we're talking a GTX 660 vs a GTX 680.

The next-gen consoles demand that kind of power.

Yeah. I was looking at the gt70 with 780 too. Tbh i was reading that it has a heat issue which had me worried. I am not too bothered by getting the 770 I suppose it does also come with the 256gb which I'd want to get anyway. Also, amazon taxes the hell out of me lol. Newegg no tax and they don't have that exact model there. The model with 780m there is $200 more. I mostly play not very demanding games anyway. Also have a ps4 preordered so if I have any issues I can get the game there. Also, article regarding the issue:

Yeah that review scared a lot of people. Turns out that Anandtech got a bad machine. In the real world, the GT70 has no colling issues whatsoever. A few of us (including myself) here have them, and can attest to that.

In the end, you should buy what makes you happy. It's just that, objectively and in purely gaming laptop terms, the 770M isn't a good return on investment for nearly $2k USD. MSI, Clevo, and even Alienware give you a GTX 780M for that amount of money. There's also the fact that the G7500JX only comes with one year of warranty, versus the two years which come standard with MSI. That's a large investment to only be covered for a single year, though you can buy a warranty extension through Asus within a certain number of days. That, of course, would raise the price.

I'm not trying to make you feel like shit, just being honest since $1,900 is a shit load of money.

If you're willing to go $100 over over your budget you can get the MSI GT60 which includes Wiindows 7, if not then you can get the Sager NP8235, it's exactly $1300. It comes with W8 though, but if you're willing to spend extra you can include W7 instead.

1. Get either the MSI GT60 2OC or GT70 2OC.

2. Spend $5 for Start8 so Windows 8 is exactly like a much better Windows 7.

3. Be happy.

I didn't see any alienware for around that price? Are you referring to a custom build from dell? I've seen them for well above $1900 even the alienware 14 with 765m on amazon after tax was nearly $1700 for me. The MSI model with 780 you linked me was $2100 for me after tax and I'd still have to purchase an ssd :/ But good to know that MSI model on that review was bad. Would suck if people spent all that money and the thing burned out.

Was looking at the samsung ativ book 8?? Will it be refreshed this year with better GPU?

Looking it up it has the exact same parts and specs as my samsung laptop, the series 7, except that it has a touch screen and so is more expensive. I got my laptop very close to its release day release, 4/5 months ago and the GPU was brand new, so I don't think it will be replaced for at least a few months.
Still, you might want to look for something else, maybe one with a Nividia GTX 765M.

thanks. im also looking at the gigabyte p35k, and clevo w230st.
However samsung will have better build quality and battery life.

PS chronos series 7 is just the older name for the ativ book 8.

Samsung is not upgrading the GPU on the Bok 8 this year. The GTX 765M is a solid 40% faster than the 8870M, so I must suggest you choose one of the laptops which sports the Nvidia GPU.

I'm not sure where you got that Samsung has better build quality and battery life, but that isn't necessarily true.

So just received the g750jx with a nice stuck pixel on the screen!! Tried all the tricks to get rid of it but nothing worked. Newegg were cool though and let me return it for a full refund...even paid the shipping. Maybe I will go that gt70 with 780m that kjack recommended when i get the refund.
