Just a reminder, Cubs/Pirates game is an early one today. It's on ESPN and starts in a little over 2 hours.

BTW Zambrano has the best damn ERA in major league baseball for a starter with 25+ starts. His record is only 15 wins because the Cubs bats die at times and the bullpen has been total ass until the last two weeks of this year. He should have 20 wins and should be a leading candidate for NL Cy Young award....

Also, anyone know when Ben Sheets becomes a free agent? I want him on the Cubs staff.....!

That's what I said when the Cubs faced Weathers. :(

BUT, I think the Cubs offense will be motivated to go out and get Madduxs 15th win today instead of trying to get it on his last start of the year. Cubs have won seven straight versus the Bucs. Lets end the year with 8!

Also, ICHIRO goes 4 for 6 last night, 247 total hits! Guy is getting on fire once more!

It's all coming together. Everything is falling into place.

I'm getting a good chuckle in reading various MLB message boards about how the Cubs have such a cake schedule the last 13 games. Well duh, we already got done playing our tough games. We had a stretch in June and July where we played over 50 straight games with teams that had a .500 record or better. No other team has had as tough of a schedule as the Cubs have had this year. Besides, this team is under a ton of pressure to beat these weakling teams. If they don't then all those 'glorious', 'wonderful' cubs choke pictures will resurface.

Just get in the playoffs, and we'll see where we go from there.

BTW, Cubs magic number is now 8. Cubs go 8-2 the rest of the way they are guaranteed the wild card. I'm rooting for the Stros tonight! Don't let me down!

BOOOOO! Kamakazi Kaz to start the Dodger game tonight against David Wells. LOL

DePodesta:

"There isn't a team in the race that hasn't had a tough break," said general manager Paul DePodesta, who traded for Penny July 30. "We've got to suck it up. We have to play with the mindset of going with what we have right now. We're still 9-11 in September. It's not as though it's a disaster. We're in first place. It's not a bad spot to be in."
YOURE FIRED!!!

Why do you Dodger fans hate Depodesta so much, isn't he 100x more competent than the guy that signed Darren Driefort to that ridiculous contract?

Meh, gotta point the finger at someone. HeHe, I dont know if he is as bad as Kevin Malone yet. Well see what he does this off-season and then it will be more clear. But for now, It's all DePodesta's fault!!! :D

Someone does have to take the blame when a team in first for most of the year begins tanking right before the end of the season. What do LA fans want Depodesta to do about signing Beltre? You know Boras is his agent and it's going to cost whoever gets him a fortune.

Well, he did get Penny with the intention of landing Johnson. He was competing with the Yankees for Penny, though I have no clue who the Yanks would have sent to Florida. Johnson and Arizona really screwed the Dodgers.

Have to figure they'll resign Beltre and go after some pitchers next year.

Do any other Yankee fans cringe when this happens?

Pitcher Change: Paul Quantrill replaces Tom Gordon.

I hope they do sign him but not if they have to pay him an absurd amount over what he is worth. DePodesta also tried to get Vladimir Guerrero right before the season started but couldnt get a deal in place because the sale of the team wasnt finalized yet.

Because the guy traded key parts of a core unit that got the Dodgers to an 8 game lead in the division, when no one expected them to do more than 3rd, for a guy with known arm problems. Hee Sop Choi wasn't going to be playing this year, and the minor league pitcher they got was tradebait for Finley. Basically all we got for LoDuca (.300 hitting cathcer & leader), Mota (nails setup man to Gagne), and Encarnacion (solid platoon outfielder, great defensively, got some clutch hits), was Brad Penny. You're going to mess with your cheminstry, bullpen and lineup that late in the season for a guy that's going to see action once every 5 days? That's if his arm troubles don't pop up. Depodesta touted the trade as what was going to get them not only into the playoffs, but deep into the playoffs this year.

So what happened? Dreifort was put into a positioin he was clearly not ready for, got hurt and now the bullpen is a mess, resulting in starting pitching to have to go more innings, and thier current starting pitching woes are a consequence. Not only that, but you take 2 bats out of your lineup and replace them with a streaky Finely, who when he's hot he's rediculous, but right now he's not at all on, and non-factors Maine and Ross, you get an inept offense reliant on longball to overcome 3-5 run leads caused by the starting pitching faultering, and you can see where this becomes a circle and where it leads.

All would have been forgiven if Depodesta could have convinced Randy Johnson to come to LA, but he rolled the dice and came up duece. So we have to settle for Penny. Defenders of the trade will bring up Finley, which was a great deal, but I maintain that we could have gotten Finely and kept LoDuca and Mota, after all, Arizona traded him for 2 minor leaguers.

But all that's history now, we have to deal with it. I think the bitterness though comes from the feeling that Depodesta traded away a fan favorite, revisiting the Piazza debacle and messing with an amazing chemistry that got them to where no one in their right mind would have thought possible. And if you think chemistry doesn't matter, watch the NBA Finals of last year ;) Sorry about the rant, I didn't have internet access around the time the trade went down, so I had this all suppresed, glad I got it out :p That's basically my take on why Depodesta is not looked at with high esteem right now.

Not resigning Beltre would only expand on all the lousy trades and be a PR nightmare. From there, Depodesta gets lynched.

Yay Quantril protects the 4 run lead. Now for another weekend of "If Bill Buckner would have caught the ball, we wouldn't fuckin care so much" nonsense.

Encarnacion isn't all that hot. Penny was clutch for the Marlins for the run last year, but he was still only the #2. Don't know what anyone was expecting with Hee Sop Choi. He sucks. Reminds me a lot of my high school career. 1 bomb of a home run per every 10 K's.

wow, texas wins again. A's falling apart. I can't see a team not performing in September doing much in October. This goes for the A's and the Angels. I'd love to see Texas get in

That's another thing, Depodesta didn't want to have to pay Bletre, Gagne and LoDuca, he knew that Dodger fans would be calling for his head if he doesn't sign Beltre and Gagne, so he got rid of LoDuca as a preemptive strike financially and PR wise.

Johnson is he one that really screwed the Dodgers, Arizona wanted him out, but wasn't going to give him up for peanuts to the team he wanted to go to, the Yankees we have nothing in thier farm system, so Randy gave a big FUCK YOU to managment and vetoed every other deal.

I don't know what Encarnacion was like as a Marlin, but as a Dodger tha guy was a nice hitter and got some clutch hits. He was fast in the outfield and on the bases, and good with the glove and had a pretty good arm. I saw him make some pretty amazing catches. I agree with you on Choi.

Lee Mazzili is destined to kill himself. Christ does the Orioles pitching staff suck. Orioles go up by 2, they give up 2. Orioles go up by 3, they give up 3. This series has been torture, they could have swept.

Choi does suck. I was pissed when the Cubs didn't get Thome because Choi was the "future". Thankfully, Lee has made up for that stupid mistake.

Heh. Well, I wouldn't mind if the Giants win, but I'd like to see the Cubs ahead of them finally after following the Giants for like 11 straight days. :p

Holy Hell sweet play by Finley to save Ishii!!! Bradley & Cora have become complete wastes of space at the plate, Beltre doubles atleast.

Fucking Tracy with the soft heart not bringing in the hook after the second walk!!! Finley almost saved us with another circus catch. What a bonehead play, out at the plate. :D

Fucking blind umpire, the tag missed all the way.

Sweet, Cubs bout to take a wild card lead. Too bad LA's winning. Oh, and right now the Rangers look amazing. Where as the A's supposedly have that starting pitching, the Rangers are playing great great baseball all around. Im a real big fan of Michael Young and Hank Blaylock too. Those guys can play.

LOL @ the little kid in the Boston/Baltimore sportscenter recap. This on David Ortiz's drive that fell just short to end the game. They say "take a look at this kid and the pain on his face" and I swear he says "fuck!" and then we see him cringe. That was awesome

Great win for the Stros tonight...

I hope that lights a fire under their ass and the bats heat up for the rest of the season. We have to score runs to win games. I gotta hand it to the bullpen tonight too, they did a great job.

damn, Barry is the only player today in baseball that in like a Michael Jordan-esque way, exacts his revenge on pitchers and opponents. Even though he lost the highlights of him hitting the triple after the wild pitch controversy was sick

Oh man. Here comes Houstons series with Milwaukee! Milwaukee just can't score any damn runs either. :( We better sweep the Mets!

Maybe I'll head to Miller Park this weekend and try to help will the Brewers to victory over the Disastros! JUST WIN ONE MILWAUKEE.

Yeah, pretty much. We have a three game lead on the Disastros in the wild card (FOR THE LOSS COLUMN). With 10 games left (9 for them) if we blow that three game lead we deserve to lose the Wild Card.

That Rangers/As game yesterday was one of the most exciting finishes to a baseball game I have ever seen.

I seriously believe that the Rangers could wreck some havoc if they made it to the playoffs. There is nothing more dangerous than a young team, on a hot streak, with a lot of confidence.
