The Amazing Spider-Man |OT| This is How you Shot Web

Man, I used to have some simply excellent runs in that game. Going through the city at top speed. I was so good that I could swing through narrow crevices, spin on a street light, launch up to a building, wall run between the ladders in the fire escapes, launch up into the air, do some air tricks, and land, with pinpoint accuracy, on Peter's balcony to his apartment. I had web swinging down to a science after, literally, sinking hundreds of hours into it.

I've probably played SM2 for about a hundred hours since 2004, but those goddamn fire escapes are still the death of me. I don't think I ever saw a fire escape that I didn't manage to swing into :p

Lol. I know the feel.

But man, I used to actually pull off running between them. Right through the ladder and the wall. It was awesome, especially vaulting off of the wall after running between the fire escapes, then launching into a Web Zip to Swing combo.

I fired it up again last night after reading this thread, and, uh, let's just say I'm not as good as I used to be. Lol. I felt it coming back after a while though. The game is hideously ugly, and the camera is janky, but the swinging is still really fun.

I just really, really like the feel of weight the game gives to Spidey. I also thought that having to "point" the analog stick where you wanted to fire the web was great. I felt more in control.

And that "stop your heart" sensation when you swing too far out from buildings, and you try to fire a web, and nothing happens, so you go plummeting down to the ground, frantically pressing the web button, and just before you hit the ground...web zip to full swing, no Spidey-pancake!

Shit game. But man, swinging was really a rush when you got good at it.

I'm too hyped for the actual movie to not at least rent this game. I haven't played many superhero games lately.

Also: Goddamn the SM2 nostalgia is killing me. I've already got it in my GameFly queue thanks to all the previous discussion. I would throw down some serious cash for a simple Spidey swinging simulator or something. A developer wouldn't even have to make missions or anything; just let me web swing in HD.

I just finished SM2 again a couple of days ago, inspired to pull it out again with all this talk for the new game, and the swinging is even better than I remembered. And the rest of it is worse :p. I still remembered the infinite air combo, though. I know what you mean about suddenly finding yourself out in open air with nothing to swing from; about half my time is spent desperately thwacking R2 to try and web zip onto anything.

One of the craziest things I noticed was that if you want to reach the top of a building without just wallrun -> jump -> wallrunning straight there, you can actually aim a web at the corner nearest you so that when you swing past it your web will wrap around the building and get much shorter, which gives you a huge boost in speed. It's amazing they programmed that kind of stuff in.

All this thread is doing is make me want to play Spider-Man 2 again.

I had highish hopes for ASM, too; improvements to the combat system, decent graphics and a city that doesn't just feel like a bunch of grey boxes but they seem to have fucked up the most important part of a Spider-Man game up so... I'm out.

Yeah. The rest of the game is complete shit, but man did they nail the web swinging physics.

For example, last night, I was swinging low to the street, chasing a car. Unfortunately, a streetlight was in my way, and I forgot that, unlike this new Amazing Spider-Man game, I wouldn't just clip through the light. Instead, my webbing got hung up on the light, and I did a loop dee loop on the horizontal bar of the street light. Lol.

I had completely forgotten that, because the web actually has physical weight in the world, that it gets caught up on that stuff, which can be used to your advantage if you get the timing/angle just right (such as scaling a building like you mentioned above).

It's a shame that such an awesome mechanic is in such a shit Spidey game.

So, SM2's web swinging mechanic, Web of Shadow's combat (the combat really was fun), maybe Shattered Dimension's ASM art style (or even Ultimate Spider-Man's art style), and the tight control, or mission variety of Batman: Arkham City, with inFAMOUS 2's UGC creator as a bonus?

If we're dreaming then let's toss in competitive online web swinging races.

He could be.

He gets no credit for his range as a voice actor.

Listen to his demo reel, or listen to the podcast he did with Rob Paulsen on Paulsen's site.

North has incredible range and skill as a voice actor. It's not his fault game developers are uninspired and just want him to "do the Drake."

His Deadpool is awesome (see Hulk vs Wolverine, as opposed to UMvC3).

He could pull of a rather good Peter Parker if given the chance.

Well he probably could, there's just no reason for it. I don't know how Sam Riegel is handling Spidey in this game but with both Josh Keaton and Christopher Daniel Barnes still wanting to do Spider-Man there is little reason for North to do it.

Wish they would do an iron spider costume.

For all the shit Edge of Time gets, there really was no shortage of costumes in it. If you combines the game with your Shattered Dimensions save there must've been around 20 costumes or so in it.

It would be cost effective, to be sure.

North does a shit ton of characters. He could pull double or triple duty as Spidey/Peter, some villains, even some NPCs.

If you're trying to shave costs when producing your video game, a voice actor that can play multiple characters is one way to go.

I think Josh and Chris have done a fantastic job as Spidey. I was responding to those that don't think North would work as Spidey.

I think North is already in this game. One of the commanding soldiers in one of the stealth sections sounds just like him.

Just finished it, decent plot. Completely flat final scene. For those looking for Spider-Man's Arkham Asylum, you'll have to continue waiting. I'll post an actual review at some point tonight or tomorrow.

Edit: Post credits was a nice touch.

For those curious yes, the game does continue after the story mode completes. Strangely though you need to select the time of day from the apartment hub, the game does not have a true cycle.

1 costume unlocks after completion. Highlight to find out what it is.
Cross-Species Spider-Man - Kinda looks like half manspider design they've played with on the show and comics, it's neat and gross.
.

Does the webswinging get any better? You said it wasn't quite there early on, but I'm hoping upgrades enhance the experience. I want to believe!

How is the Wii version? Worse than PS360? I'll probably end up buying it for the 360 if I do buy it, but Im curious to hear how each version is.

How's that? There's been about 4 open world Spider-Man games. There's been far more linear Spider-Man games than open world.

I merely meant most recent current console Spider-Man games have been open world, so I figured that they would continue to go in that direction, the last linear Spider-Man game I remember is Spider-Man 1 that was based on the movie. Were there any after that? I admit the last Spider-Man game I played was probably Ultimate Spider-Man on the Gamecube, so I may be out of touch.

The last 2 games that this specific developer made for Spider-Man were both linear. You should play Shattered Dimensions, it's pretty fun. It's pretty obvious that the Wii isn't open world because the Wii isn't as popular as it used to be, and aside from the Legos/Just Dances/etc, it just doesn't make sense for them to put that much effort into the Wii version of the game in 2012.

I bought the game yesterday (TY early releases!) and so far I am really enjoying it. I just can not seem to find those hidden Spiderman logo's to unlock costumes though.

Do we have any information on the 3DS game? Is it a port of the console games? Does it have a fully opened world? I'd actually really like to play this on there for some reason.

At the risk of derailing the thread, all of the images on GAF are suddenly displaying share buttons when I hover over them... anyone else see this?

No open world, port of the Wii version, demo live at the eShop.

I find it extremely unlikely that Beenox are not aware of the desire to see the web swing mechanics of SM2 make a return, given that it is a complaint common to all of their releases, so I wonder why they elected to ignore it once again...

Ugh, was hoping to grab this from Redbox but they only added the Wii and Xbox version. When do reviews start going up?

My main concerns with this is simply how dumbed down they made it. How is the difficulty in this (and is it the good type of difficulty or the bad?). I just want a fun game to explore and learn, but this one looks like it holds your hand tight and never lets go.

oh shit i forgot about red box.. i may not have to spend $65 on it.

My only problem with the game from what i have seen is the zoomed in camera when swinging, i fucking hate it and it makes me feel like vomiting. I am fine with webs sticking into space, it's a game.. that doesn't bother me but camera is super important to me and it seems like it's something that will give me headaches.

I guess they just can't do it. Fair enough. Or maybe they really think what they're doing is better. lol

The game is a really good attempt. It's clearly Beenox best Spider-Man game.

I just don't like how they're trying to emulate Batman: Arkhams combat. It doesn't feel as good. Though, some open world / city battles are pretty cool. And i love how the camera is really well done.

The Web swinging mechanics are OKAY. They're not as good as SM2. It's feels more on the rails than actually web swinging with actual physics.

The story is bland and the dialogue is predictable. I don't like how they've just stick to a single shot during cut-scene or story progression.

Best Spider-Man game this gen, IMO.

Better then web of shadows? one of the most underrated comic games IMO.

So is my concern about the camera going to be squashed? i haven't played so i can only speak on maybe 3-4 videos i have seen but it just seems like it gets disorienting.

It kinda looks from the promotional vids that they're banking heavily on the Web Rush mechanic which seems so wacky to me since it's basically a glorified web zip.

I was so tempted to cancel this preorder after learning of the cloud swinging but Im going to give it a shot instead. I hope the rest of it is fun enough.

?Donde esta los reviews?

Activision doesn't give a fuck about reviews. They NEVER sent stuff early when I was in charge of reviews - shit just showed up whenever, or not at all.

Either something's up with my Xbox, or this game won't install correctly. For some reason, even though I've installed it, the drive spins.. HARD.. throughout play. Not just the normal couple of minutes like most games that are installed.

Anyone else notice this?

Impressions from the first hour or so:

- Cloud-swinging is annoying, but I try to only pull it when I'm near a building, pretending that it works as it should.

- Combat is very fun, and as someone in this thread has pointed out before, Spider-Man 3's combat was pretty darn "Arkham"-ish before Batman did it, as far as the warnings for blocking/dodging, multiple enemies at once, etc. In fact, I alway thought it was funny that for some reason the bad guys in the Batman games had "Spider-Sense" wavy lines coming off their heads before they attacked.

- Anyone used to the other games will probably miss the web zip, but I'm starting to just replace that mentally with the web rush to make quick jumps from one place to another.

- Indoor levels emulate their previous game design, with linear levels and simple puzzles to solve.

- Free-roam is interesting, but I hope to high heaven I'm just not far enough in for them to start a day/night cycle. Right now, just swinging around the city, it's been 9am-ish for a VERY long time.

- Unlocked my very first costume, and I don't know how. It's the
Tobey
suit. I never found a Spidey logo anywhere, so it might just be something in his closet by default.

I'm DEFINITELY annoyed by the cloud-swinging, but I still think I'll have a lot of fun with this game, based on my early time with it.

Am i the only one that doesn't get annoyed by cloud-swinging? i keep hearing everyone complain about it but does it REALLY matter? would it make the game leaps and bounds better with it? its just swinging :-/

No it's not just swinging. It's just the best part of playing as Spiderman.

But it is just swinging, why does it matter if it sticks to a building or the cloud? what possible advantage do you get from it sticking on a building? how does it make it better? and don't say because it's realistic because nothing about spider-man is realistic.

I liked Wed of Shadows but it got really repetitive. I'm almost done with it (i think) and it really hasn't worn out on me, despite it's flaws.

And the web swinging doesn't get disorienting. A good chunk of the game is indoors. I'll even go as far as saying the majority of it is.

I'm a HUGE Spider-Man fan and I will say I'm satisfied. It's not on the level of Batman: Arkham, but it's a good attempt.

It doesn't respect the limitations of the character and it doesn't make for an engaging, believable relationship with the environment (momentum and physics don't matter). Really if this is about the fantasy of being spiderman the experience of swinging through the city should be absolutely the primary thing to get right before anything else. And if it's not about that then it's just a generic cash-in action game.
